Living Costume Designer Sandy Powell on Finding the Perfect Suit for Bill Nighy, Men’s Fashion These Days & Disney’s New Snow White Film

The idea of remaking a classic like Akira Kurosawa’s 1952 drama Ikiru might not seem like a particularly prudent decision, but that’s exactly what Director Oliver Hermanus has done with Living, transporting the story to ’50s London with Bill Nighy playing Mr. Williams, a lifelong public servant diagnosed with terminal cancer who tries to make the most of his last few months.

While Kurosawa’s film was contemporary at the time of its release, Living is a period piece, and Hermanus wisely called upon one of Hollywood’s top Costume Designers, three-time Oscar winner Sandy Powell, to design the costumes. Powell has worked quite regularly with filmmakers such as Martin Scorsese and Todd Haynes, and she has won a trio of Oscars for her work on Shakespeare in Love, The Aviator, and The Young Victoria, in addition to receiving 12 other Oscar nominations, including dual nominations in both 2016 (Carol and Cinderella) and 2019 (The Favourite and Mary Poppins Returns).

Though Below the Line has spoken to Powell a number of times over the years, this was a particularly special conversation in which we not only talked about her work in Living but also about an amazing bit of philanthropy she organized two years ago for a very good cause.

[...]

BTL: I know you’ve worked with Martin Scorsese and Todd Haynes a lot, as well as designed costumes for Disney movies like Cinderella and Mary Poppins, but otherwise, how do you decide whether to take on a project? Is it about the filmmaker as much as it is about the script?

Powell: I mean, yes, in the films that aren’t Disney, it’s script and director, basically. So either a director I know… obviously, I’m going to do a film with Martin Scorsese or Todd Haynes if they ask me because I know them, and I know it’s gonna be good, whatever it is. On a meeting with a director, either I know the director’s work to begin with, or I meet them, and [if] I really like them and [I’m] inspired by them, then I would want to do the job, but I have to really like the script.

Now, if I don’t like the script, or if the script is something that I wouldn’t be interested in seeing myself once it was made, I wouldn’t want to do it. I’m only interested in doing things that I really think are great, and also, that’s got something for me to do, [and] that I’m going to enjoy doing. I actually don’t think I could produce good work on something I didn’t care about.

[...]

BTL: It must have been harder for you and your department because you can’t really do fittings without getting close to the actors.

Powell: Well, [we’re] just all masked up, so it’s a bit difficult, but it became a way of life. I did a couple films during that whole time, and then even after that, last year, when I was doing Snow White, when there was no pandemic, we still had to… I mean, basically, the rest of the world [wasn’t] wearing masks. We had to wear masks all day long, every day.

BTL: It’s cool that you also did Snow White, as I’ve known Marc Webb for quite some time. Did you have to recreate costumes like Snow White’s iconic outfit from the original animated movie?

Powell: I don’t know how much we can talk about this, but it’s not about recreating something from the original. Obviously, there is a nod to the original, and the character has to be recognizable as Snow White, but it’s a new version. In the same way as I did Cinderella, it’s a nod to the original animation everybody knows, but it’s the new version. But it couldn’t be [a] more polar opposite to Living, with a six-week prep. I mean, that was 10 months of my life, and we made every single costume you see in the film, and there are thousands of extras, and every single costume, every single thing was made for all the principals and so it was fabulous. I mean, it’s a luxurious amount of time to actually get something done, and it’s great to be able to do that. I mean, I love designing and making everything from scratch, and that’s what I was able to do.

Snow White 2024 leak

The film begins with a young Snow White, the rightful heir to the throne of a beautiful kingdom ruled by her mother, the Queen. However, tragedy strikes when the Queen dies, leaving Snow White an orphan. Her father, the King, remarries a woman named Grimhilde, who is beautiful but cruel and power-hungry. Grimhilde, now the stepmother of Snow White, becomes increasingly jealous of Snow White's beauty and popularity among the kingdom's inhabitants.

She feared that Snow White would one day challenge her rule, and so, she ordered her huntsman to kill her which he failed, so she ordered Snow White to be sent to the dark forest where she hoped the young girl would be killed by the dangerous creatures that inhabit the area. However, Snow White survives and comes across a cottage, where a group of seven dwarves were introduced a while after Snow White finding their cottage, the magical creatures who were called “Dwarves” take her in and become her friends and protectors. Meanwhile, Grimhilde's tyranny becomes more oppressive, and the people begin to suffer. When discovering that Snow White found a home, Grimhilde orders her maiden to go and offer Snow White silky laced bodices. The maiden laces her up so tightly that Snow White faints but the dwarfs return just in time to revive Snow White by loosening the laces, Snow White was determined to stop the Evil Queen. A group of thieves, led by a young man named Jonathan, begins to steal from the rich and give to the poor, in an effort to alleviate the suffering of the kingdom's inhabitants. Snow White meets Jonathan and his friends, Heidi and Louis, during her journey in the forest and they become allies and friends too.

As Snow White and Jonathan get to know each other better, they begin to fall in love. Snow White shares her story with Jonathan, and he joins her in her quest to reclaim her throne and restore her kingdom. Together, they journey back to the kingdom with the help of the seven dwarfs, who become an essential part of their quest. They face many dangers along the way, but Snow White's fierce determination and bravery help them to overcome all obstacles. A new character was also revealed called Jemila, a dark and mysterious character that is a replacement to the raven in the original film. Before the final battle with Grimhilde, Snow White is tricked into eating a poisoned apple, which puts her into a deep sleep. As Grimhilde sat on her throne in her opulent palace. Her eyes were fixed on the young peasant, Jonathan, as he made his way through the castle gates. She had heard rumors of his friendship with Snow White, and she was determined to use that to her advantage. Jonathan was led through the palace by the Queen's guards, his eyes wide with wonder at the wealth and luxury on display. The Queen greeted him warmly, offering him riches and treasures beyond his wildest dreams. She spoke of a future where he would be her loyal subject, living in splendor at her side. But Jonathan was not fooled. He knew that the Queen was the one responsible for Snow White's curse, and he refused her offers. Enraged, the Queen ordered her guards to trap Jonathan and throw him in the palace dungeons. But Jonathan was not one to give up so easily. He used his wits and strength to escape the dungeons, evading the Queen's guards as they searched for him. He made his way to the cottage where Snow White was sleeping, her body still under the curse of the poisoned apple. With determination in his heart, Jonathan bravely went to the cottage, where he found a way to break the curse and awaken Snow White. Grimhilde believes that Snow White is dead, but she was saved. Together, they go back to the kingdom and start the war to reclaim the kingdom.

The climax of the film is an epic battle between Snow White and her allies and Grimhilde and her forces. Snow White and Grimhilde have a final showdown, which ends with Snow White killing Grimhilde, but not before the evil queen revealed a shocking secret about Snow White's real mother and the curse Grimhilde put on the mirror, the magic mirror has been Snow White’s mother all along, Snow White doesn’t believe Grimhilde’s words as she tries breaking the curse of the mirror and saving the kingdom and her mother's soul, who was trapped in the mirror by Grimhilde, but before Snow White could do anything Grimhilde broke the mirror and shattered it which led to a fight between Snow White and The Evil Queen, Snow White brilliantly kills her using the mirror itself as the spirit “Snow white’s mother” inside the mirror leashes out of anger but things go wrong as Snow White’s actions began to change, Snow White realizes that the real villain is her mother all along and things get explained, but everything ends in peace as the mirror was thrown into the river. The film ends with Snow White and Jonathan getting married in a grand ceremony, attended by the whole kingdom. They rule together, with the seven dwarfs and their friends by their side, as Snow White becomes the powerful and just queen her mother once was. The movie finishes with a breathtaking wedding and the kingdom folk celebrating.

Character descriptions:
Snow White:

Is a young and innocent girl, the rightful heir to the throne of a beautiful kingdom. She is kind-hearted and gentle, loved by all who know her for her beauty and her kind nature. However, her life takes a tragic turn when her mother dies, leaving her an orphan, and her father remarries a woman named Grimhilde, who is beautiful but cruel and power-hungry.

Faced with the loss of her home and her identity, Snow White must adapt and become much more powerful and determined in order to restore her throne and reclaim her kingdom. She becomes willing to do whatever it takes, including facing dangers and obstacles along the way, to achieve her goal. Despite her gentle nature, Snow White proves herself to be a fierce warrior, using her courage and determination to overcome all obstacles and battle the Evil Queen.

At first, Snow White's goal is to find a prince to help her reclaim her throne, but she soon realizes that a prince is not everything she needs. Instead, she turns to her friends, the seven dwarfs, and Jonathan, a thief, who become her allies and supporters in her quest to reclaim her kingdom. She becomes a strong and powerful leader, willing to fight for what is right and stand up against oppression and tyranny.

However, as she becomes more and more focused on her goal, Snow White's actions begin to change her into an antagonist, causing her friends and allies to leave her. In the climax of the film, Snow White realizes the error of her ways and regrets her actions, including her role in the death of the Evil Queen. She regrets her decisions and apologizes to her loved ones, and the movie ends with peace and prosperity, as Snow White marries her loyal friend, Jonathan. In the end, Snow White learns that there are more important things than just power, such as true love and friendship.

Grimhilde, The Evil Queen:

Is a formidable and terrifying villain in the live action adaptation of Snow White. She is consumed by her jealousy and hatred of Snow White, and will stop at nothing to eliminate her and cement her own rule. She is highly intelligent, calculating and manipulates others to achieve her goals.

Her magic mirror is a powerful tool in her arsenal, which she uses to seek out information and control those around her. Her backstory of losing a baby before marrying Snow White's father gives her a sense of desperation and longing for power.

Grimhilde's intense desire to achieve her goals causes her to become even more ruthless, cunning and manipulative. Despite Snow White's attempts to be a good stepdaughter, Grimhilde is determined to make her life as miserable as possible and is a force to be reckoned with.

Jonathan:

Is a new character introduced in the live action adaptation of the classic animated film of Snow White. He is a thief in the kingdom, who is a part of a group of thieves who steal from the rich to give to the poor. He is well known to the castle's guards, as he has been caught multiple times but always manages to escape. He has a reputation for being cunning and resourceful. Jonathan meets Snow White in the forest and becomes her ally and friend as soon as he heard about her story. He insists on helping her reclaim her throne, despite the risks and dangers involved. He is brave and determined, and plays a crucial role in Snow White's quest to restore her kingdom.

Jonathan shows his bravery and loyalty when Snow White is put under the curse of the poisoned apple. He risks everything, including his own life, to save her and confront the Evil Queen, Grimhilde. Despite being offered riches and treasures by the queen, he refuses to betray Snow White and chooses to stay with her.

Jonathan's loyalty and love for Snow White is evident throughout the film, even when Snow White is at her darkest. His unwavering support and devotion ultimately plays a crucial role in her redemption and in the final resolution of the story.

The relationship between Snow White and Jonathan is a central part of the story and its a beautiful one, it teaches the audience that a prince is not everything, love is not only about a title but about the person being loyal and supportive. The film ends with a marriage of Snow White and Jonathan and the kingdom finally being at peace, and Snow White’s dream of having a prince had turned out to be something much more special and meaningful.

Plot twist:
it is revealed that the magic mirror is actually Snow White's real mother who has been trapped inside. Her mother was the true source of evil and had been fueling the queen's vanity and jealousy. The magic mirror was given to the queen by an old enemy of hers, Jemila, who had been disguising herself as a dark-skinned girl.

This explains why the queen had been keeping Jemila trapped in a cage in her dungeon. Despite knowing the truth, Snow White still wants to save her mother as she does not believe the queen's words. However, before Snow White can do anything, the queen breaks the mirror, leading to a fight between the two. In the process, Snow White's mother's soul escapes the mirror and enters Snow White's soul, turning her into a much darker version of herself, but things get resolved thanks to the Dwarves.

bellissima fan art Fulvio! Bravo!

Ian Eisendrath is the Executive Music Producer for Disney’s live-action SNOW WHITE (starring Rachel Zegler and Gal Gadot; currently in post, releasing in 2024)

[...]

Working with Gal Gadot, Rachel Zegler on Disney's Snow White - Ian Eisendrath - Click

Ecco cosa dice:

Q: Before I left you go, I have to ask about the hughly anticipated live action version of Disney's Snow White. Are you able to give us maybe a little taste of what we can expect? I know a lot of people are really waiting for that.

Eisendrath: I'm so excited about it but I will say that you know we finished doing some work on it and I can't talk about a lot of details but it was an absolutely thrilling experience to work on it in prep and to shoot it and to do the pre-records and I'm just really blow away by Rachel Zegler and Gal Gadot and Andrew who plays our Prince. It's really really special and one thing I love about it is it's a 1937 classic Disney film but unlike I think I might be wrong any of the othes you know we're not it's not all the original songs, so Benji and Justin have been brought in to write new songs for it so it really feels like something new and yet there's such homage and such a nod to the classic and that you know, it's the Snow White that we all love and I just think it's a beautiful story and that is very very timely and you know it's like a story I want to exist for my daughter so like she has a sense of hope and vision for what it means to be a young woman in today's world and what a young woman can accomplish and sort of just the absolute potential and just sort of unstoppable possibility of what it means to be alive today and yeah it's just something that just fills me with great hope and warmth and it's very very delighful and fun and moving.
