‘Snow White’ Remake Reveals First Look at Rachel Zegler as the Disney Princess at D23

“Magic mirror on the wall, who is the fairest one of all?”

Fans were treated to the first look at Disney’s live-action “Snow White” remake at the D23 Expo on Friday, revealing Rachel Zegler in the role of the first-ever Disney princess.

The 30-second teaser opened with the Evil Queen’s iconic question to her magic mirror. Snow White dons her signature costume in the footage, which ends with her dropping the poisoned apple.

Stars Zegler and Gal Gadot were on hand to tease the film.

“I didn’t even see it! I didn’t see what you guys saw!” Zegler said in tears.

“There’s such an emphasis on what it meant to be the fairest of them all,” she later said, referring to the movie’s opening line.

“It was very different from anything I’ve ever done before. I’m used to playing the other end of where the heart should be,” Gadot added.

Snow White Footage Description: It's Gal Gadot Versus Rachel Zegler [D23]

Disney is currently hard at work remaking pretty much every single successful animated feature into a live-action version, and they've finally returned to the film where it all began: "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs." The upcoming film from "The Amazing Spider-Man" director Mark Webb will expand on the 1937 animated classic and will star Rachel Zegler ("West Side Story") as the title character. Starring opposite Zegler is Wonder Woman herself, Gal Gadot, as the Evil Queen. As a part of Disney's D23 celebrations, Gadot and Zegler stepped out on the stage in Anaheim, California to share a brief clip from the film and their excitement about bringing this magical movie to life. 

Zegler exploded onto the scene in Spielberg's "West Side Story," earning the role of Maria when she was only 16 years old by sending in a video of herself belting out two of the musical's main songs. It's a good thing that we know she can really sing, because this version of "Snow White" seems to be leaning into the musicality of early Disney animated features. Benj Pasek and Justin Paul, the musical duo behind "The Greatest Showman" and "La La Land," have joined the team behind "Snow White" and are writing new songs to join some of the classic favorites from the original. The soundtrack to this could end up being pretty great, and the movie doesn't sound too terrible either. 

Gadot plays bad and the footage looks good

/Film's Ethan Anderton attended the upcoming Disney and Pixar films panel at D23 and described the brief footage shown. There were quick flashes of several major settings, including Snow White's cottage in the woods, the intricately designed interior of the queen's castle, and the moss-covered forest that is both friend and foe to Snow White, depending on whether or not she's lost. There were also short glimpses of Gadot as the evil queen, Zegler as Snow White, and Snow White's hand falling with the poisoned apple toppling along with her. 

Zegler shared that she was excited for some of the new technology they've incorporated into the movie, which might have something to do with the CGI effects used to bring the fantasy world to life. Gadot, on the other hand, was concerned with more mundane matters, like how much fun it was to really break bad: 

"It was very different from anything I've ever done before. I'm used to playing the other end of where the heart should be. Stepping into her shoes and getting under her skin was delightful. It's so not me, but it was so great. The fact that I could go cuckoo, and crazy, and dance and stretch."
It sounds like Gadot had a lot of fun playing the villainously vain ruler, and fun villains can make an entire movie worth watching. Between the potentially killer soundtrack and a vampy villain really letting loose, "Snow White" sounds like a lot of fun. "Snow White" is set to release in 2024.

Call it the Elsa Effect. Or maybe it’s just progress.

But both Rachel Zegler and Halle Bailey— respective stars of the upcoming live-action Disney reboots Snow White (2024) and The Little Mermaid (2023) — said their “modern,” diverse versions of the iconic animated princesses will far less tethered to those age-old “true love” storylines.

“In 1937 the cartoon [Snow White and the Seven Dwarves] was so focused on her finding true love, and it’s not even in her mind at all in this film,” Zegler (West Side Story), 21, told us Friday at Disney’s D23 Expo in Anaheim, where she was joined by co-star Gal Gadot (watch above).

“She’s so focused in becoming the leader that her father tells her that she can be. And she’s really trying to find the courage to stand up to the Evil Queen [Gadot] and how to find her own agency and rule a kingdom. And she meets so many incredible people along the way. And maybe she finds love. Maybe she finds friendship. But what’s really important is that she finds her own voice.”

And while Eric (Jonah Hauer-King) will still be a major character in next year’s The Little Mermaid, Bailey says her Ariel also won’t be defined by a romantic attraction.

“We keep a lot of the meat of the film that made us all fall in love with this film,” said Bailey, 22. “It’s really her, and her gumption. And just excitement for the life above [her] world. So it’s amazing, but it’s also updated with the current times.

“I think she really just goes for what she wants. She’s not scared. And it’s not all about a boy. It’s all about what she wants for herself, and her life.”

Zegler, who is Latinx, and Bailey, who is Black, are also representative of Disney’s ongoing efforts to embrace diverse, color-blind casting across its properties.

The animated 2013 mega-hit Frozen broke the Disney princess mold in many ways by not giving its lead character Elsa (Idina Menzel) a love story, an element that was maintained in 2019’s Frozen II. We’ve seen a similar trend in superhero movies for both men and women with films like Captain Marvel and Shang-Chi, both of which didn’t include the once-requisite romantic subplot.

Speaking of superheroes, the Marc Webb-directed musical Snow White will feature Gal Gadot as her first Big Bad, something the Wonder Woman star is excited about, among other new things she gets to do.

“It was different than anything I’ve ever done before,” she says. “I went bigger, more theatrical. I acted with my body, with tone of voice, with everything. I sang, I danced, it was great.”

And of course, she went more evil. “Oh, just wait,” Gadot teases.

The Little Mermaid opens May 26, 2023. Snow White releases in 2024 on a date still to be determined.

When Gal Gadot isn't saving the world as Wonder Woman or putting the pedal to the metal in the Fast and Furious franchise, she is exploring a variety of other roles elsewhere in Hollywood. The latest of these will be in 2024's live-action remake of Snow White.

Playing opposite Rachel Zegler's Snow White, Gadot will take on the role of the evil Queen Grimhilde in this retelling of a Disney animated classic. This is a bit of a departure for the Israeli actress, who for much of her career has played the hero of her Hollywood stories.

With Gadot taking on the evil queen, she will also get the opportunity to completely transform into the seminal Old Hag character who fans know offers the infamous apple to Snow White. This transformation was exciting for the DCEU actress as revealed in a new interview at D23.

A Transformation for Gal Gadot

Speaking with Variety at D23, Snow White actress Gal Gadot and her co-star Rachel Zegler revealed that the transformation into the film's Old Hag character took at least four hours.

When asked what it was like seeing herself on-screen as the iconic Disney villain, Gadot joked that she "still [hasn't] seen anything" from the film, but did note that the "transition for the Old Hag" took her "four hours" in a makeup chair:

Gadot: "We did not see the clip, so I still haven't seen anything. But when I was in makeup, just like she [Rachel Zegler], we got to work with such an amazing crew and it was the best it could ever be.I must say for me the transition for the Old Hag was incredible because it was all real prosthetics."

Zegler: "You were in the chair for like four hours."

Gadot: "Four hours. And changing the voice and everything. I feel so lucky that I got to play something that is so far from what I know and what I'm used to. And I super super enjoyed every second of it."

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter at the same Anaheim event, the actress acknowledged that this is so "different than anything that [she has] ever [done] before," calling the experience "delicious:"

"It was amazing. It was an amazing experience. First of all, I am grateful for the opportunity to be able to play the first iconic villain ever. And to tell her story and to get into her shoes, I'm honored to do that. And it was great.

She's so much different than anything that I have ever played before. And it was great to explore all of those differences, and to sing, and to dance. It was just delicious. And I enjoyed every moment with it."

Changing things up for Snow White

When Gadot says a figure like four hours in a makeup chair to essentially transform into this iconic Disney character, some will be shocked. But this is not something that should be all that surprising.

Given the fact that this look is supposedly being done largely by way of prosthetics, it makes total sense for the time to prep an appearance like that to be upwards of 240 minutes. This is something that Disney is no stranger to ,with projects like the upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 breaking the "World Record for 'the most makeup appliances created for a single production."

For talent taking on these sorts of roles, large sums of time in a makeup chair is just something that comes with the territory. However, it is not hard to tell just how much Gadot loves exploring a different type of role than what she usually takes on. Just listening, one can hear the genuine excitement she has for the part, and hopefully, that will come across on-screen.

Snow White is set to hit theaters sometime in 2024.

Già, di questi due pezzi già si sapeva. Purtroppo, considerando le premesse di questo film e La Sirenetta, per i quali viene esplicitato che la storia d'amore non è un traino ed è quasi secondaria, mi sembra abbastanza evidente che "Someday my prince will come" sarà tagliata fuori.

Secondo me la metteranno nel film ma sarà in qualche modo diversa.
Ho paura che non ci sarà io spero/non ho che un canto che è la mia canzone e la mia scena preferita.
Sulla mia pagina instagram a tema Biancaneve mi hanno mandato in pvt una foto di gal godot dicendo che sia un leak del trailer mostrato e a me pare molto vera anche se qualcuno poi l’ha smentita.
Io tendo a credere sia vera perche ha la stessa limea guida dell abito di rachel leakkato mesi fa e confermato aia quello definitivo. Una specie di Descendants. Simili al classico ma pop e kitsch purtroppo

Dopo la presentazione, il volto della protagonista ha parlato con Extra TV del perché questo nuovo adattamento sarà moderno:
Il cartone originale è uscito nel 1937, e si vede. Si concentrava sulla sua storia d’amore, con un tizio che è praticamente uno stalker. Faceva molto strano, perciò noi non l’abbiamo fatto. Il nostro è un approccio diverso a quello che molte persone crederanno una storia d’amore, solamente perché abbiamo un ragazzo nel cast, Andrew Burnap… sei fantastico!
Quindi sì, molte persone si faranno certe idee, ma non sarà una storia d’amore, che trovo fantastico. E che trovi l’amore lungo la strada o meno si vedrà nel 2024. Magari tutta le scene con Andrew saranno tagliate, chi lo sa! Parliamo di Hollywood, ragazzi.
Il suo sarà un viaggio alla scoperta di sé per trovare la sua identità e incontrerà alcune persone sul suo cammino che renderanno il viaggio incredibile.

Quindi sì, molte persone si faranno certe idee, ma non sarà una storia d’amore, che trovo fantastico. E che trovi l’amore lungo la strada o meno si vedrà nel 2024. Magari tutta le scene con Andrew saranno tagliate, chi lo sa! Parliamo di Hollywood, ragazzi.

ragazzi ma la Zegler mica può raccontare nelle interviste tutto il film altrimenti non ci sarebbe alcun senso a vederlo... lei dice qualche cosa in generale e infatti aggiunge la frase "se trova o no l'amore sul suo cammino si vedrà nel 2024", proprio come tecnica per non svelare troppo...
poi è ovvio che è Biancaneve e uno sa che storia va a vedere... già con i Nani si sono fatte mille polemiche e poi ci sono, con la Regina e la Strega in CGI pure e poi si è scoperto che sarà realizzata in maniera artigianale, ora dobbiamo pensare che il film a quanto ne sappiamo non divergerà così tanto dal cartone animato, che la Zegler dica che ha qualche aspetto moderno è normale (parla al pubblico di oggi), se dicesse Biancaneve si innamora e viene svegliata dal bacio del vero amore e tutto finisce lì allora sapete che succederebbe? che tutte le femministe griderebbero al fatto che Biancaneve è la solita principessa passiva, che non è un buon modello, che sono migliori le altre e così via... quindi gioca su questo alone di mistero però non vi racconta storie, dice "se [Biancaneve] riuscirà a realizzare i suoi sogni o se troverà l'amore o meno sul suo cammino si vedrà nel 2024" come per lasciarvi un po' di suspense... tra l'altro nel video scherzando dice quando parla di Burnap "questo ragazzo [l'amore di Biancaneve] c'è a meno che non tagliano le sue scene, questa è Hollywood ragazzi"... segno che la ragazza ha ben capito quello che le è stato imposto di dire o non dire...

sai Alessio che questa idea dell'amore del popolo che la sveglia dal sonno mortale non è mica così male... va solo elaborata nella realizzazione ma come idea è pure bella... magari simboleggiata dal "Principe" che si avvicina alla bara di vetro nel bosco (sì la bara dovrebbe esserci, avevamo letto che erano stati chiamati dei lavoratori del vetro per la realizzazione) e la sveglia con il bacio che allora diventa non solo il bacio d'amore del principe ma anche quello di tutto il suo popolo che la ama... come idea non ci dispiace affatto... se ben realizzata e studiata può essere interessante e pure "alternativa" rimanendo nel solco della tradizione

È orribile che questa sciacquetta chiami Stalker il principe di Biancaneve.. che s****zi tutti, fatevi un bagno di umiltà nei confronti di una delle più grandi opere d'animazione della storia... C'è una differenza abissale tra uno stalker e un amore così genuino e delicato raccontato dal primo classico Disney.

Dice di amare il personaggio di Biancaneve, ma cosa ama se non le piace che sia innamorata e che le piace cantare e pulire? Ne ama l'icona, ma non l'essenza.

Sì l'idea che suggerite veu mi sembra un bel compromesso. Ma l'intervista rimane comunque cinica e presuntuosa, nel solco del pensiero americano moderno e Disney soprattutto. Give up!

Per quanto riguarda la questione sull'amore e tutto, la Zegler è stata chiara su ComicBook nel corso di un'intervista in cui ha fatto capire che la parte d'amore ci sarà, sarà giocata in maniera diversa ma ci sarà eccome...
