Angela Lansbury Back At Disney For ‘Mary Poppins Returns’

Angela Lansbury, who has starred in a number of Disney films over her long career, has just joined the cast of Rob Marshall’s sequel Mary Poppins Returns, which is filming at Shepperton Studios. She will portray the Balloon Lady. The film is scheduled for release Christmas Day 2018.

Directed and produced by Marshall, who directed Chicago to six Oscars including Best Picture, Mary Poppins Returns stars Emily Blunt, Lin-Manuel Miranda, Ben Whishaw, Emily Mortimer and Julie Walters with Colin Firth and Meryl Streep also in the film as well as … original Disney favorite Dick Van Dyke.

The new film, a sequel to Disney’s 1964 classic Mary Poppins, also is being produced by John DeLuca (Chicago) and Marc Platt (La La Land) from a screenplay by Life of Pi‘s David Magee. It is, of course, based on The Mary Poppins Stories by PL Travers. The Hairspray Live! team of Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman are composing new songs with Shaiman composing an original score.

Mary Poppins Returns introduces three new Banks children and is set in Depression-era 1930s London (the time period of the original novels) and follows Michael (Whishaw) and Jane (Mortimer) now all grown up, with Michael, his three children and their housekeeper, Ellen (Walters), living on Cherry Tree Lane. After Michael suffers a personal loss, the nanny Mary Poppins (Blunt) re-enters the lives of the Banks family, and, along with the optimistic street lamplighter Jack (Miranda), uses her magical skills to help the family rediscover the joy and wonder missing in their lives. Mary Poppins also introduces the children to a new assortment of colorful and whimsical characters, including her eccentric cousin, Topsy (Streep).

Lansbury, who voiced Mrs. Potts in Disney’s animated blockbuster Beauty and the Beast, is a five-time Tony winner actress who also appeared such classic Disney films as Bedknobs and Broomsticks.

She is repped by Zero Gravity Management and attorney Bob Myman.

Come vi abbiamo recentemente riportato, è iniziata la produzione di Mary Poppins Returns, il sequel del leggendario film del 1964 con Julie Andrews. Le riprese hanno luogo presso gli Shepperton Studios, in Gran Bretagna. Nel cast, come saprete, c’è Emily Blunt (Il Diavolo Veste Prada) nel ruolo dell’iconica tata dalle mille risorse.

Come molti di voi già sapranno, in Mary Poppins del ’64 Dick Van Dyke non ha interpretato solamente lo spazzacamino tuttofare Bert, ma anche l’anziano Mr. Dawes, direttore della banca presso la quale lavora il signor Banks. Nel film di Robert Stevenson, Dawes tentava di convincere il giovane Michael Banks che investire “due grami, miseri, semplici penny” nella sua banca lo avrebbe reso parte attiva della grandezza dell’Impero Britannico nel mondo.

In Mary Poppins Returns, Van Dyke, 91 anni, interpreterà il figlio del signor Dawes, chiamato semplicemente Mr. Dawes Jr., a capo della Grande Banca Dawes di credito, risparmio e sicurtà.

Nel ’64, quando Van Dyke lesse la parte e ascoltò la canzone “Fidelity Fiduciary Bank”, pensò subito di volere l’occasione di portare in scena anche il personaggio dell’anziano banchiere. Chiese dunque a Walt Disney di essere messo alla prova, sottoponendosi a una lunga seduta di trucco, e si offrì di interpretare Dawes a titolo gratuito (quando invece ricevette un compenso anche per il secondo ruolo, scelse di donare il denaro al California Institute of the Arts).

Va bene, mi rimangio quello che dissi nel 2015. Ora che so che ci saranno due grandi come Angela Lansbury e Dick Van Dyke nel film, penso proprio che lo andrò a vedere. E secondo me alla fin fine sarà molto bello (prima ero convinto uscisse fuori una schifezza)...

Va bene, mi rimangio quello che dissi nel 2015. Ora che so che ci saranno due grandi come Angela Lansbury e Dick Van Dyke nel film, penso proprio che lo andrò a vedere. E secondo me alla fin fine sarà molto bello (prima ero convinto uscisse fuori una schifezza)...

Occhio alle aspettative, come minimo si tratta di poco più che due camei, niente di rilevante io temo.

It’s no secret that all nannies are compared to one single, supernaturally-inclined doyenne of discipline who flew in on the eastern wind in 1964. The iconic character has stayed in the hearts of moviegoers in the decades since she first burst onto the screen — and now, she’s back.

Disney’s Mary Poppins Returns (in theaters Christmas 2018) might be one of the highest-profile sequels ever attempted, more than half a century after Walt Disney’s cinematic classic immortalized the careers of Julie Andrews and Dick Van Dyke, smashed records, got a word in the dictionary (guess which one) and become one of the most cherished films of all time. Set in 1910, the original film, loosely based on the first two volumes of P.L. Travers’ eight-book series, told the story of how Mary Poppins united an absent father and his two playful children through her singular, enigmatic magic. But there were six more Travers books, bursting with more characters and stories, waiting to be adapted on screen one day.

Mary Poppins Returns, directed by Rob Marshall (Into the Woods), picks up 25 years after the events of the first film, fast-forwarding to London’s mid-1930s economic slump, the actual time period of Travers’ books. Number 17 Cherry Tree Lane has become the warm, loving home that banker and artist Michael Banks (Ben Whishaw) shares with his wife and three children. But after the sudden death of Michael’s wife, the Banks family is shattered — even enthusiastic aunt Jane (Emily Mortimer), now a fervent union organizer, and long-time housemaid Ellen (Julie Walters) can’t help lift spirits — and so in time, the once-blossoming home is on the verge of foreclosure.

Cue the arrival of prim and peculiar Mary Poppins (Emily Blunt), who leads Michael’s wayward children (and Jane and Michael themselves) on a series of unbelievable adventures — to the top of Big Ben, the bottom of the ocean, into magical encounters with animated dancing penguins and upside-down cousins (hey, Meryl Streep!). If anyone can help this family find the light they’ve lost, it’s Mary Poppins.

Contending with five decades of a practically-perfect legacy, the sequel’s filmmakers have dedicated themselves to being as faithful and respectful to the iconic original as possible while still crafting a fresh new family musical. “The bar is so high for this,” says Marshall, who also directed the Oscar-winning Chicago. “But to be able to walk in the footsteps of this beautiful story about a woman who brings magic to this family that’s looking for wonder and hope and joy in their lives… I feel a great responsibility and reverence every day. We all feel it. We’re just lifting it up to get there with the right intentions behind it.”

It’s a sentiment echoed by the cast, full of lifelong lovers of Mary Poppins like Blunt (who earned Julie Andrews’ blessing as the character long before the first camera rolled) and Lin-Manuel Miranda (who plays Mary’s pal Jack, a winsome lamplighter and former apprentice of Dick Van Dyke’s famed chimney sweep, Bert). Even the creative departments abound with folks who know the stakes and want to get this right: Tony-winning composers Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman (Hairspray) penned a new score that sounds downright Poppins-esque, while costume designer Sandy Powell and her team worked to bring the iconic looks of Mary and the Banks family into the stylish 1930s.

EW was on the film’s London set earlier this year and returned with a boundless carpet bag of goodies about the buzzy sequel. From the stunning recreation of Cherry Tree Lane at Shepperton Studios to the real streets of old London where Jack trips the light fantastic, the set of Mary Poppins Returns is a veritable playground, and Mary’s spirit is unmistakably present. So was Dick Van Dyke, filming a top-secret cameo — no, not as Bert — just a day prior to EW’s visit. “Dick Van Dyke said that the thing he remembers the most about doing the original film was the spirit, and he said, ‘It’s exactly the same spirit here,’ Marshall says, standing on the sunny cobblestones in front of No. 17. “He was right here on Cherry Tree Lane and he said, ‘I feel like I’m home.’”

Se Mary Poppins del 1964 ha pescato principalmente dai primi due libri di P.L. Travers, i volumi rimanenti contengono molti spunti che potranno trovare un eventuale approfondimento in Mary Poppins Returns.

Come riportato da Entertainment Weekly, il film di Rob Marshall (che, lo ricordiamo, sarà un sequel, non un remake o un reboot), sarà ambientato 25 anni dopo il primo capitolo. Vedremo nuovamente la casa dei Banks al numero 17 di Viale dei Ciliegi e torneranno Jane e Michael che, per quanto divenuti adulti, non hanno mai dimenticato la celebre tata che ha cambiato per sempre le loro vite.

La vicenda, come è già stato reso noto, si svolgerà dopo un lutto familiare che colpisce la famiglia Banks. Mary Poppins tornerà in azione per trasportare tutti, compresi i piccoli figli di Michael, in una nuova avventura.

In una delle sue ultime interviste, Rob Marshall ha dichiarato di sentire l’enorme responsabilità circa il sequel di un film leggendario, entrato nell’immaginario collettivo e divenuto parte integrante dell’epica del grande schermo. Come dichiarato da Marshall:

"Le aspettative sono altissime. Sento una enorme responsabilità riguardo al compito di ripercorrere i passi di questa magnifica storia su una donna che riporta la magia in una famiglia che vuole nuovamente meravigliarsi e sperare. […] Dick Van Dyke ci ha rivelato di ricordate pressoché tutto della lavorazione del primo film, e ci ha detto che qui si respira lo stesso spirito di allora. Rivedendo il numero 17 di viale dei Ciliegi ha esclamato “Mi sento come se fossi a casa!”."

Mary Poppins Returns: ecco perché Julie Andrews non ci sarà

Sin da quando è stato annunciato il sequel di Mary Poppins si è parlato della possibilità di un cammeo di Julie Andrews, straordinaria interprete del film originale e vera e propria icona del cinema.

Nel film tornerà Dick Van Dyke, con un piccolo cammeo (non nei panni di Bert), ma la Andrews non ci sarà. Il motivo lo spiega oggi il regista Rob Marshall su Entertainment Weekly:

"[Io e John deLuca] Parlammo del film a Julie qualche anno fa. Sapeva che era in sviluppo, e noi le annunciammo che lo avremmo realizzato noi. “Grazie a Dio!”, esclamò. Poi le dicemmo che stavamo pensando a Emily Blunt, e lei alzò le mani in aria ed esclamò “sì!”. Penso che in molti nutrano lo stesso entusiasmo verso il lavoro di Emily.

Julie è stata incredibilmente carina, abbiamo parlato di un possibile cammeo in maniera molto vaga, ma lei si è espressa subito a riguardo: “Questo è il film di Emily Blunt, e io voglio che sia il suo film. Non voglio che il pubblico esclami ‘ah, ecco Mary Poppins’. Non voglio. Voglio che lei si appropri del ruolo e lo faccia suo, perché sarà fantastica”."

L’attrice insomma sostiene Mary Poppins Returns (così come gli eredi di P.L. Travers e il co-compositore del film originale Richard Sherman), ma ha scelto volontariamente di non farne parte per non creare alcuna confusione e non oscurare Emily Blunt.

Mary Poppins Returns: 5 homages to the original movie

The sequel is all new, but fans will recognize little spoonfuls of surprise

While Disney’s 2018 sequel Mary Poppins Returns abounds with new material — a new story, new characters, new songs, and a whole new timeline that picks up on Mary Poppins and the Banks family 25 years later — there are still a handful of nods to the original 1964 film, because really, how could there not be?

Producer Marc Platt sums up the film’s relationship between past and present fairly well: “What makes this all exciting is that there is a pedigree, there is a history, there is an expectation from an audience, and the challenge and the joy has been, how do you pay proper homage and respect to what is beloved, but infuse it with freshness, with your own personalities, be it in the score, in the design, or in the story? How do you make the cinematic experience of a new Mary Poppins sequel its own thing, and yet still have that bridge to the past, so you get the best of everything?”

Homages in director Rob Marshall’s film should be taken more as tips of the hat, not tantamount cornerstones to the DNA of the sequel. Still, there are more than a few little buried nuggets organically embedded in the story that will trigger your emotions when they go down in the most delightful way.

1. An animated musical number

Long live the penguins! The four dapper dancing birds return for a musical number that finds Mary and Jack leading the Banks children into an animated world inside a Royal Doulton bowl where, surprise, a grand music hall performance is about to take place. Veteran Disney and Pixar artists are already at work animating the well-dressed antelopes, polar bears, gazelles, and conductor orangutans who populate the cartoon Victorian opera house, where Jack and Mary tap onstage alongside the real stars of the show: the four hoofing penguins named after Astaire, Hardy, Grant, and Chaplin.

2. Admiral Boom (and his boat-themed abode)

The cannon-happy naval neighbor of the Banks family is indeed back — technically, he never left — and his ship-shape home on Cherry Tree Lane has received a careful update. “Nothing is an exact reproduction, but it’s our version,” says production designer John Myrhe. “That street’s a good example of something that’s not, say, exactly Boom’s house, but the goal was that when people walked on it, they’d go, ‘Whoa, this feels like Cherry Tree Lane.’ We want people to feel like they’re seeing something they’ve seen before, but really seeing it for the first time.”

3. A tip of the hat to a tip of a hat

Certain fashions of Mary Poppins are never going to go out of style, even with a chic makeover in the 1930s. She’s still got her talking parrot-head umbrella, for one thing, made with animatronic love by Myrhe’s team. But costume designer Sandy Powell has also found a way to incorporate Mary’s propensity for avian nature into her hat game. Like the curious little flower that popped up from the hat of Julie Andrews, “Rob wanted something quirky and memorable for [Emily’s] hat,” says Powell. “I thought of that little robin in the original ‘Spoonful of Sugar’ song…and we came up with a way to make these great little embroidered birds from thread.” (See if you can find it on our cover.)

4. Family ties

If you couldn’t tell already, there are plenty of connections to be made between the characters of Mary Poppins Returns and their predecessors — 25 years will do that to a family. Michael and Jane have chosen career paths that mirror their parents — he’s a banker, and she’s a union activist, which is as close to a Sister Suffragette follow-up as you can get — while Mary’s new costar Jack is a lamplighter who apprenticed as a child to a certain chimney sweep named Bert. (No, he does not share his accent.)

5. The park

You know what doesn’t get a good enough rap in the world of Mary Poppins? The park. Yes, it may not have the treasured tranquility of Cherry Tree Lane or the gritty Oliver pizzazz of the streets of London, but it’s always been a dependable spot of greenery and adventure for Mary Poppins, and in this film, the park plays a significant role in tugging at heartstrings, especially once springtime lands. To craft the public area, Myrhe’s team relied heavily on a map drawn in the ‘30s by Mary Shepard, the original illustrator of P.L. Travers’ books, who had penciled out a full diagram of her vision of the park (bearing the names of book characters like Neleus and Nellie-Rubina). Myrhe then used it as a guide to create the park you’ll see onscreen, which includes an abandoned section that serves as a stomping ground and showplace for a big musical number featuring that noble group of lamplighters, the Leeries.
