Even before High School Musical 3: Senior Year hits movie theaters on October 24, Disney Channel is starting work on High School Musical 4, says The Hollywood Reporter.

"We are writing 'High School Musical 4,' " Disney Channel Worldwide president Rich Ross confirmed Tuesday. It's likely to be a TV movie unlike "High School Musical 3," though that could change.

The news comes as the stars of the two smash hit TV movies are preparing for production on the third installment of the series, which will begin filming in two weeks in Utah. There's no word on whether the cast and behind-the-scenes talent will gather again for "HSM4," though some characters introduced in the third go-round likely will star in the fourth.

"Are we going to have all the cast back? Probably not," Ross said. "Will we have some of them? I hope so."

Mi diverto troppo a cantarle!

Disney Channel has announced that "High School Musical 4" will premiere in 2010:

East meets West in a classic love triangle set against the cross-town school rivalry between the East High Wildcats and West High Knights, in "High School Musical 4," the fourth story in the celebrated franchise that became a cultural sensation, fueled unprecedented digital music downloads and underscored the strength of Disney Channel and Radio Disney's connection to kids, tweens and families.

"High School Musical 4" brings the franchise back to television in a music and dance-filled Disney Channel Original Movie that will introduce a new cast of characters. It is scheduled to begin production later this year for premiere on Disney Channel in 2010. The announcement was made today by Gary Marsh, president, Entertainment, Disney Channels Worldwide.

Marsh said: "The 'High School Musical' trilogy introduced a new generation to the celebrated genre of movie musicals. In crafting this next iteration, we've challenged the entire creative team to raise the bar again -- and create something truly worthy of this extraordinary global phenomenon."

The screenwriter of "High School Musical 4" is Peter Barsocchini who wrote each of the three movies in the franchise. Bill Borden and Barry Rosenbush return as the executive producers.

Disney's Emmy Award-winning "High School Musical" premiered in January 2006 on Disney Channel in the U.S. It went on to become a smash hit internationally, airing on Disney Channels and free-to-air broadcasters worldwide. To-date it has reached more than 290 million viewers in over 20 languages across 100 countries, including India, China and Russia.

The "High School Musical" soundtrack was the #1 album of 2006 and the DVD was the year's #1 TV movie on DVD. "High School Musical" also delivered licensed amateur and professional touring stage productions, a best-selling junior novel, a popular consumer products franchise, a themed show at Disneyland Parks and Resorts in Anaheim, Orlando and Paris, and a sold-out, 52-date arena concert tour in North America and Latin America.

The movie's critically acclaimed sequel, "High School Musical 2," ranks as the #1 basic cable telecast of all time (18.6 million viewers for its August 2007 premiere) and thus far has been seen by nearly 300 million Total Viewers in 24 languages around the world. The "High School Musical 2" soundtrack is triple Platinum, and its DVD release was the top-selling TV property on DVD for 2007.

Walt Disney Pictures debuted "High School Musical 3: Senior Year" in theatres in October 2008. Its premiere weekend box office sales marked the highest debut ever for a musical and for a live-action G-rated film. Thus far it has grossed $250 million at the box office around the world. "High School Musical: Senior Year, Extended Edition" on DVD released in February.

http://jimhillmedia.com/blogs/jim_hill/arc...ies-finale.aspx

Meanwhile, on a complete separate development track, we have “High School Musical 4.” And even though “High School Musical 3: Senior Year” was a hugely successful theatrical release (During its domestic run, “HSM3” had the highest opening weekend totals ever for a new movie musical. With this Kenny Ortega film then going on to earn over $250 million at the worldwide box office), this franchise will be returning to its cable television roots in 2010.

If all goes according to plan, “High School Musical: East Meets West” will go into production in Utah during the latter part of 2009 and then air on the Disney Channel sometime next Fall. And as for this Disney Channel Original’s storyline …

Well, according to what Mouse House insiders have told me about the teleplay that Peter Barsocchini (who wrote the first three installments of the “HSM” series) has written, “High School Musical: East Meets West” will also drift into Capulet-and-Montague territory. With “HSM4” touching on the previously-unmentioned heated cross-town school rivalry between the East High Wildcats and the West High Knights.

To be fair here, Barsocchini and his writing partners aren’t “borrowing” all of “Romeo & Juliet” ‘s key plot points. Instead of star-crossed lovers this time around, “HSM4” will deal with a love triangle.

Now where this gets interesting is – rather than make use Matt Prokop, Justin Martin and Jemma McKenzie-Brown (whose Jimmie Zara, Donny Dion and Tiara Gold characters were deliberately introduced in “High School Musical 3: Senior Year” so that this Disney franchise would then have some recognizable-but-still-affordable performers to built future “HSM” installments around) – is that “High School Musical: East Meets West” is reportedly going to feature an all-new cast.

Mind you, that’s most likely because Ortega is no longer directing the “High School Musical” movies. Kenny’s moved on (Most recently, Ortega was the director / choreographer for the now-canceled Michael Jackson “This is It!” concert that was planned for London’s O2 Arena). In his place, Disney has hired Jeffrey Hornaday. Who is probably best known for the choreographer of “Flashdance” and “Captain EO.”

Okay, I know. I’ve kind of been beating up on the scriptwriters for “Camp Rock 2: Final Jam” and “High School Musical: East Meets West” in today’s article. Accusing them of “borrowing” most of their ideas for these two projects from Shakespeare.

But the upside is … Rich Ross, head of Disney Channel Worldwide, doesn’t much care who first came up with that star-crossed-lovers idea and/or that Montague-Capulet-rivalry thing. In the end, what really matters to Rich is “Is the script solid?” And in the case of “Camp Rock 2: Final Jam,” the advance word is that this soon-to-begin-production Disney Channel Original has a surprisingly entertaining teleplay. And provided that helmer Paul Hoen (who previously directed “Jump In!” for the Disney Channel) can pull all of the pieces together, “Camp Rock 2” should actually be a better TV movie than the first “Camp Rock” was.

As for “High School Musical: East Meets West” … From what I hear, “HSM4” has a good-but-not-great script. And when it comes right down to it, the ultimate success of this Disney Channel Original – as well as the entire “High School Musical” franchise -- depends on who Hornaday casts. Whether Jeff is able to find the next Zack Efron & Vanessa Hudgens.

A nationwide casting search begins today for the project, which will continue the story and introduce new East High Wildcats and their cross-town school rivals, the West High Knights.

“High School Musical is part of Disney Channel’s DNA. It embodies all that we stand for,” said Gary Marsh, President and Chief Creative Officer, Disney Channels Worldwide. “As a way of continuing to embrace that heritage, we’re excited to announce ‘the start of something new’ — as we launch a search for a new class of East High Wildcats to star in a fourth installment of the High School Musical franchise.”

Dan Berendsen (creator/executive producer of Freeform’s Baby Daddy) and Peter Barsocchini (writer of all three High School Musical movies) are the screenwriters of High School Musical 4. Bill Borden and Barry Rosenbush return as the executive producers.

Directed and choreographed by Kenny Ortega, High School Musical premiered January 20, 2006, drawing 7.7 million total viewers in the U.S.– at the time, the highest ratings for any telecast ever on Disney Channel. It became the first-ever TV movie soundtrack to reach #1 on the Billboard Top 200 chart and went on to become the #1 album of 2006. Its sequel, High School Musical 2, ranks as the #1 basic cable telecast of all time (18.6 million viewers for its August 17, 2007 premiere). The third movie, Walt Disney Pictures’ High School Musical 3: Senior Year, was released in October 2008 and grossed over $250 million at the worldwide box office. The franchise launched the careers of its young stars, Zac Efron, Vanessa Hudgens and Ashley Tisdale.
