Anna Kendrick to Star in DreamWorks Animation’s Musical ‘Trolls’

Anna Kendrick will star as the relentlessly upbeat princess Poppy in DreamWorks Animation’s musical “Trolls.”

The comedy stars the colorful big haired dolls that became a popular toy among collectors during the 1960s and later again in the 1990s.

Kendrick’s upcoming films include Disney’s musical “Into the Woods” and Universal’s “Pitch Perfect 2.”

Mike Mitchell (“Shrek Forever After”) will direct “Trolls” that 20th Century Fox will release Nov. 4, 2016.

“Anna has proven herself to be a brilliant actress with an amazing singing voice,” Mitchell said. “She’ll inject Poppy with the exact mix of spirit, sass and song that will no doubt give a whole new life to the iconic Troll dolls.”

DreamWorks Animation paired up with Trolls rights holder Dam Things in 2013 to adapt the dolls into films and TV shows. As part of the deal, DWA handles worldwide rights to the characters with the exception of Scandinavia.

The Troll dolls were first created in 1959 by Danish fisherman and woodcutter Thomas Dam as a present for his daughter.

DWA’s most recent toon “How to Train Your Dragon 2″ is out in theaters now.

Everything we know so far about Dreamworks Animation’s Trolls

This weekend’s release of How To Train Your Dragon 2 gave Dreamworks Animation their biggest opening at the American box office for a number of years. The studio might count themselves lucky that they’ve already got a third instalment in the works, alongside other sequels for Madagascar, Puss in Boots and The Croods.

But there are also some originals in the pipeline, and somewhere in the middle, films based on licensed books and toys. One of these is Trolls, a musical adventure set in the world of the little Danish dolls with the colourful quiffs.

I’ve been following development of the film for some time, from the shadows. There’s a lot that’s been kept secret, but I’ve picked up on a number of interesting bits and pieces. Here’s everything I’ve learned so far.

Some years back, Dreamworks were developing an adaptation of Terry Pratchett‘s Truckers, the story of small Nomes that live near a motorway. Anand Tucker was developing the film with John Orloff and Simon Beaufoy.

Slowly, the film started to drift away from the original novel. There was a time when it seemed to be both a version of Pratchett’s story and a licensed work based on the Trolls toys. It was during this window that Jason Schwartzman was offered the lead role of Masklin, the name Pratchett gave to Truckers‘ lead character.

By this time, Chloe Moretz had already been cast, but as development continued and the story moved further and further away from Pratchett, the character changed sufficiently that Moretz was no longer appropriate casting. Moretz soon left the project and then, somewhere along the way, Masklin was reinvented too.

At the moment, Mike Mitchellis developing the film as something closer to one of Aesop’s Fables, telling us the story of how the Trolls got their colourful hair.

Dreamworks have just announced the casting of Anna Kendrick as a character called Poppy, the Trolls’ Princess. She’s the new protagonist, though as far as I can tell, she was originally created during the process of transition from Pratchett to something new. It’s good casting, and Kendrick will put her effervescence and spirited delivery to good use, not to mention her singing voice.

As the story stands, the film becomes a quest with Poppy out to rescue the kidnapped elder Miss Guffin, the previous leader of the Forest Trolls. The new villain is a Town Troll called Chef, and that should give you some clues about where Poppy’s mission is going to take her.

A lot has changed for Trolls over the last few years, and while I’m not sure that Truckers has been washed out of the story entirely, I think anything that remains is very subtle, and very possibly accidental. Fairy tales almost inevitably share some archetypes and tropes.

At the moment, Trolls is set for release on November 4th 2016 so there’s still time for yet more to change. No matter how extreme the makeover gets, however, the one thing I wouldn’t expect is for the little creatures to sort out their hair dos.
