Tim Burton Welcomes Addams Family in 3D
Source: Deadline New York
March 18, 2010

Tim Burton is going to keep his love for stop-motion animation and going...

Coming off the success of Alice in Wonderland for Disney, he's aligning himself with Universal's Illumination Entertainment and producer Chris Meledandri to resurrect The Addams Family.

The goal is to create a stop-motion animated film in 3D, similar to what Burton is doing with Frankenweenie right now. A writer for The Addams Family is currently being sought (the rights were recently purchased so the deal is still fresh) and, according to Deadline, it will hold no relation to the television series or the two feature films starring Raul Julia and Anjelica Huston.

Burton will provide the visual palette for the picture which will invoke creator Charles Addams' original drawings. The director is also developing Dark Shadows with Johnny Depp.

EXCLUSIVE: Alice in Wonderland director Tim Burton has found a new 3D project. He will direct a stop-motion animated film based on Charles Addams' original ghoulish cartoon drawings of The Addams Family. Illumination Entertainment, the Universal-based family film unit headed by Chris Meledandri, has acquired the underlying rights of the Addams drawings, once a staple of The New Yorker magazine.

Burton's intention is to go back to the litany of Addams illustrations that displayed a sharper wit than seen on the big or little screen before. Other than being inspired by the same source material, the animated feature is unrelated to previous incarnations of Addams’ work: the 1960s TV series, the two 1990s feature film comedies that Barry Sonnenfeld directed with Raul Julia and Anjelica Huston, or the Broadway musical opening this spring with Nathan Lane and Bebe Neuwirth in the starring roles.6a00d8345157d269e200e54f7038368833-

Meladandri will produce the film. Kevin Miserocchi of the Tee and Charles Addams Foundation will be executive producer. A writer will be hired shortly. Burton, whose visual creations are currently on display at a MOMA exhibit that opened last November, is expected to provide much of the visual look of the film himself.

Burton’s experience in animated film is extensive. He last directed Corpse Bride, and is making a feature version of Frankenweenie, the 1984 30-minute short film Burton made about a boy who reanimates his dead dog. That reportedly got him tossed off the Disney lot for making a film too terrifying for a family audience, but the film has since become a cult favorite. Burton recently produced 9, as well as the delightful stop-motion animated The Nightmare Before Christmas, for which he wrote the story.

tim-burton-the-nightmare-before-christmas-3d-world-premiere-khwujlWhile there are many post-Green Zone articles speculating how Universal will pull itself out of an extended feature slump, Illumination's upcoming animated slate should be a big help in giving Universal a foothold in the 3D CG family entertainment market. Meledandri left the top post at Fox Animation to form Illumination in 2007, and begins contributing to the Universal pipeline when the studio releases the Steve Carell-voiced Despicable Me on July 9. That’s followed by the April 1, 2011 release of I Hop, with Russell Brand voicing the Easter Bunny, with the Ricky Gervais creation Flanimals coming later 2011. Right behind that is Where’s Waldo and Dr.Seuss’ The Lorax.

Slashfilm, in un articolo relativo a Frankenweenie, riporta le seguenti affermazioni:

Last week there was some confusion when a Deadline report suggested that Tim Burton would shortly begin work on a stop-motion animated film based on The Addams Family. That report was quickly denied by Burton’s publicist (in a way that still leaves us wondering if it is a film that will happen)

The Addams Family Moving Forward
Source: Silas Lesnick
June 26, 2010

Producer Christopher Meledandri just spoke with ComingSoon.net at the junket for Despicable Me, confirming that the rumored animated version of The Addams Family is moving forward, with Tim Burton involved, hopefully to direct.

Though he stressed that the project is in the very early stages, he did confirm that the film is planned for stop motion and not for computer animation. He added that the project will be based on the original Charles Addams comics that ran in The New Yorker and not the subsequent television series or the film adaptations thereof.

Additionally, it has not been determined whether or not the film would be released in black and white, though it is certainly something being considered.

"It's all very, very early, but we are developing with [Tim Burton directing] in mind," said Meledandri, "...We're just now at the story phase. Stuff has been written as though we are doing it in black and white, but that's not correct. It's not incorrect, but it's not correct. We haven't gotten to that point."

Just in time for Halloween — the durable Addams Family is heading for another incarnation, this time as an MGM animated movie.

MGM is in final negotiations with BermanBraun’s Gail Berman and Lloyd Braun to produce an animated film based on the comedically macabre clan, based on the cartoons created by Charles Addams.

Pamela Pettler, whose credits include “Corpse Bride” and “Monster House,” has been signed to write the screenplay. The film will be exec produced by Andrew Mittman and Kevin Miserocchi.

The Addams Family originated in 150 single panel cartoons by Addams, about half of which were published in The New Yorker between 1938 and Addams’ death in 1988. The characters became famous through ABC’s sitcom, which ran for two seasons between 1964 and 1966 and led to several other TV series, two Paramount live-action films and most recently a Broadway musical.

Chris Meledandri’s Illumination had been developing a Tim Burton-helmed, stop-motion “The Addams Family” movie, but disclosed earlier this year that it had ditched the project.

MGM and BermanBraun announced in June that they had signed a first-look film deal as part of an overall pact to develop content across broadcast and cable.

BermanBraun’s roster of shows include NBC’s series “Camp,” HGTV’s “Garage Sale Wars” and Showtime’s “Polyamory.” The banner is also developing Ben Stiller’s “Rentaghost” at Fox and an adaptation of “Men Are From Mars, Women Are From Venus.”

BermanBraun also announced last week that it was teaming with AOL to overhaul the Moviefone service as a broader destination for entertainment news and content.

Peccato però che non è più di Tim Burton, o ho capito male?
