Walt Disney Pictures has signed Andy Fickman ("The Game Plan") to direct the remake of "Escape To Witch Mountain", the re-imagined interpretation of the classic 1975 adventure movie. Andrew Gunn will produce through his Gunn Films banner which is shingled at the Disney lot. The movie is being put on the fast track for a 2008 release.

The original film was based on a science fiction novel by Alexander Key following a brother and sister with paranormal powers. The siblings go on the run after a sinister group discovers their abilities and attempts to capture them. I loved the film as a child. Although it's a little dated, the story is still very fun to watch and could be a great movie if handled properly.

Insieme a First Ascent farà una bella coppia!!!

AnnaSophia Robb Joins Witch Mountain
Source: MTV September 25, 2007

MTV reports that AnnaSophia Robb (Bridge to Terabithia, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory) will star opposite Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson in director Andy Fickman's Witch Mountain redo at Disney. Here's a clip from their interview with Fickman:

According to Fickman, the biggest difference may be one of tone. "The original book is a very cool dark thriller. We're pulling elements from that," he revealed. "It's a much darker movie than in the 70s when they did 'Escape to Witch Mountain.'"

Visit the link above for more quotes from the director on the film.

Lo riportiamo:

Aztec to be part of upcoming Disney movie
By Lindsay Whitehurst The Daily Times
Article Launched: 02/24/2008 12:00:00 AM MST

AZTEC — If Hollywood is like another planet, the Aztec UFO Symposium should fit in perfectly.

The two solar systems will collide when art and logos from the symposium appear on sets of the upcoming Disney remake "Witch Mountain."

"(Aztec) will have a big footprint," Los Angeles-based set decorator Kara Lindstrom said. Slated for a 2009 release, the movie features an alien brother and sister searching Earth for something that will save their planet while avoiding men who would exploit their powers.

In one scene, the pair, who look human, go to a UFO convention in Las Vegas, Nev., and end up on the run. One of the convention booths will be from the Aztec UFO Symposium.

Though it will be one of about 45 booths from UFO powerhouse cities like Roswell and Laughlin, Nev., Lindstrom said Aztec's booth will be two or three times as large as the others.

"They have a lot of art work and a lot of really good stuff," Lindstrom said. "Most conventions are not that visually interesting."

Shooting is slated to start
Advertisement
in California in March, and the UFO convention scene shoot is in April. Though only extraterrestrial powers could discern the amount of screen time Aztec will get, its chances look good.

"It's background to an extremely big scene," Lindstrom said. "We'll take a week to shoot this thing."

The contact started when Lindstrom found the symposium online.

"We sent them T-shirts, cups, mugs, bags, big banners," and entries from the annual art contest, Aztec Librarian Leanne Hathcock said. "Ten years worth of stuff."

The positive, prompt response from the Aztec Library made it one of Lindstrom's favorites.

"I found a lot of people were kind of flaky," she said.

This set will be different from the others she's helped create on movies such as "French Kiss" and "Strange Days" because many, though not all, of the sets are from real groups or events.

"It always looks better. You know if something is real or kind of fake," she said. "Real works."

This week, the Aztec City Commission approved contracts giving Flying Winnebago Productions Inc., a company created by Disney for the movie, the right to use photos, images and artwork from the symposium for $2,000.

"Some people pay to have their stuff appear on sets," Hathcock said. Though documentary crews have visited the symposium before, this is the largest amount the library has been paid, Hathcock said.

The movie is a remake of the 1975 film "Escape to Witch Mountain" about two orphan children with mysterious powers. It was followed by a sequel, "Return from Witch Mountain" three years later.

The new version stars Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson as a cab driver who advises and protects the children. AnnaSophia Robb, who was in "Bridge to Terabithia," will play the sister.

"It's about aliens, but it's a family movie, really quite sweet," Lindstrom said.

The 10-year-old Aztec UFO Symposium is based on a possible 1948 spacecraft crash in Hart Canyon. Dozens of speakers and a few hundred people come each year to hear speakers on all things extraterrestrial and otherworldly.

The library is now accepting entries for the art contest. For more information, call (505) 334-7657.

Ciaran Hinds ("Rome") and Alexander Ludwig (The Seeker) have joined the cast of Race to Witch Mountain, Disney's reimagining of its 1975 adventure movie Escape to Witch Mountain.

Andy Fickman will direct what is described as an action thriller, starring Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson and AnnaSophia Robb.

Disney-based Andrew Gunn, whose College Road Trip opens Friday, is producing via his Gunn Films.

The adaptation revolves around a pair of paranormal-powered siblings (Ludwig, Robb) who, with the help of a Las Vegas cab driver (Johnson), go on the run from a diabolical group of men who wish to exploit their abilities. Hinds will play the nefarious leader of the pack.

Matt Lopez wrote the current "Witch" draft. The studio is eyeing a late March start in Los Angeles.

Carla Gugino will play the lead opposite Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson in Race to Witch Mountain, Disney's reimagining of its 1975 tween thriller Escape to Witch Mountain.

The Hollywood Reporter says actor/director Garry Marshall also will star.

In Andy Fickman's feature, Gugino will play a discredited astrophysicist and UFO expert who meets up with a Las Vegas cab driver (Johnson). He asks for her extraterrestrial expertise to help a pair of psychic siblings escape the clutches of evil men and save the human race from impending doom.

Marshall plays a government and UFO conspiracy theorist/fringe scientist who helps them in their quest. Alexander Ludwig and AnnaSophia Robb play the siblings.

Gunn Films' Andrew Gunn is producing, and his company's Ann Marie Sanderlin is executive producing from Mark Bomback's recent script. The film is set to begin shooting this month in Los Angeles

Originals Return To Reimagined Remake...

News for the 70's Disney Geeks/Fans...

The original Hannah Montana, Kim Richards and Ike Eisenmann from the classic "Escape to Witch Mountain" will have cameos in the new "Race to Witch Mountain" starring Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson and Carla Gugino currently lensing...

Eisenmann will play a sheriff, while Richards will portray a waitress at a roadhouse called "Ray's" in a small town named Stony Creek. They wind up helping Las Vegas cabbie(Johnson) and his two tween powered aliens to escape an evil group out to capture them and exploit their powers.

Interested in seeing what they do with this. I hope it captures the magic of the original and expands on it rather than creating something that waste such a good idea.

Developing...

Disney takes another pass at Vegas with filming of ‘Witch Mountain’

By Joe Schoenmann

Mon, May 12, 2008 (2 a.m.)

The Disney-fication of Las Vegas was a short-lived ’90s phenomenon meant to ensnare Baby Boomer parents by giving their children things to do at video arcades, theme parks and rides.

The trend ended, but that doesn’t mean the real Disney and Vegas are necessarily a bad mix.

In late May and early June, Disney moviemakers plan to use the 62-year-old Ferguson Motel, 1028 East Fremont Street, as the setting for part of “Race To Witch Mountain.”

The new version of 1975’s “Escape To Witch Mountain” will star former professional wrestler “The Rock,” aka Dwayne Johnson, as well as Cheech Marin, who famously feigned smoking marijuana for top-selling comic albums in the 1970s with partner Tommy Chong.

Perhaps because of the innocent special effects — imagine an RV flying through the sky toward Witch Mountain — the original movie touched a nerve with pre-teens in the ’70s and spawned 1978’s “Return From Witch Mountain.”

But will today’s super-hipster kids buy into a flick about two kids with magical powers pursued by an evildoer who wants to use those powers for ill deeds? Maybe the question should be, will their nostalgia-craving parents buy in?

•••

Refusing to back down from a progressive initiative in the face of an economic downturn, the Las Vegas City Council last week ratified a resolution to establish a Green Building Special Revenue Fund.

Under the measure, the city will collect a percentage of franchise fees levied on providers of gas, electricity and solid waste collection. Specifically, 25 percent of any incremental increase in the aggregate amount of franchise fees — over the amount collected in 2007 — will be deposited in the fund.

The fund, never to exceed $2.5 million annually, will go toward the increased cost of new LEED-certified public buildings, renovation/maintenance of public green buildings and education programs, as well as future green-building incentives.

•••

The monstrous T-Rex, the elevator down to Africa, even the live sharks, rays and horseshoe crabs swimming in an open-air tank are enough for most kids.

But some kids need more.

And more is coming to the Las Vegas Natural History Museum, 900 North Las Vegas Boulevard,

The City Council ratified a new lease agreement with the museum — the current lease is $1 per year until 2045 and can be renewed before then — that allows the museum to build an addition.

That addition will be on a patio in the museum’s northern portion and will house a permanent Egyptian exhibit, said Marilyn Gillespie, museum director.

“We think it’s going to be a great draw and very exciting for school kids,” Gillespie said.

Saluto.gif
