Disney and Infinitum Nihil have landed two very different projects that could both potentially star the latter's Johnny Depp. Deadline reports that development has begun on both a feature version of The Night Stalker and a biopic about Paul Revere's historic midnight ride.

The Night Stalker originally aired as a TV movie in 1972 and featured Darren McGavin as a Carl Kolchak, a reporter who, while tracking down a serial killer, finds that he's really going toe-to-toe with a vampire. A sequel, The Night Strangler, aired in 1973 with a television series "Kolchak: The Night Stalker" airing the following year. While the "Night Stalker" of the title referred to the Vampire, the term became associated with protagonist instead. Coincidentally, the same is true of another upcoming Depp project, Rob Marshall's take on The Thin Man.

There are no writers currently attached to The Night Stalker feature, but that is expected to change in the very near future. There is not currently an announced calendar for either project and Depp's involvement in both is only currently assured as a producer

Da Deadline:

Disney Taps Edgar Wright To Helm Johnny Depp In ‘The Night Stalker’ Feature Redo

EXCLUSIVE: Disney is setting Edgar Wright to direct The Night Stalker, the remake of the ABC telepic and series that the studio is developing as a potential star vehicle for Johnny Depp to play intrepid tabloid reporter Carl Kolchak. Depp and his Infinitum Nihil partner Christi Dembrowski will produce.

Wright, best known for directing Shaun of the Dead and Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World, comes aboard before the studio has set a writer, and he will oversee and shape the project with Depp and Dembrowski from the ground floor. As Deadline revealed, the film took root at the studio last summer, borne out of Depp and Dembrowski’s fond memories of the original 70s movie and series that starred Darren McGavin. He covered crime for a tabloid and his cases always led to supernatural perpetrators that included zombies, vampires, werewolves and aliens. Of course, neither his editor nor anyone else would believe him or allow him to run what seemed like outrageous stories. But Kolchak would put himself in grave danger each episode. David Kennedy will be exec producer of the film.

The subject matter will be tailored to fit Disney’s family film mandate and likely a PG-13 rating, but the idea of Wright’s hyper-reality style and Depp’s gift for constructing quirky characters sounds like a good match to me. Wright is also attached to direct Ant-Man for Marvel Studios and Disney.

The Night Stalker was one of two films that Depp and Dembrowski set at the studio. The other was a drama about the Midnight Ride made by Paul Revere to warn Colonial militia of the impending British invasion that made him a seminal figure in the American Revolutionary War. Jon Brown and Infinitum Nihil’s Margaret French-Isaac will be executive producers.

Depp next saddles up for Disney with Armie Hammer in the Gore Verbinski-directed The Lone Ranger. Wright’s repped by CAA, Anonymous Content’s Michael Sugar and UK-based Independent Talent.

Ottima notizia! Scott Pilgrim è un film meraviglioso, speriamo questo possa essere altrettanto bello.

Johnny Depp's 'Night Stalker' Movie Enlists 'High Fidelity' Writer (Exclusive)
Disney is developing the big-screen take of the cult hit ABC show.

Stalker is one of the more high-profile projects in the works at the studio because Johnny Depp is attached to star and Edgar Wright (Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz) is attached to direct.

The project is based on the ABC television series Kolchak: The Night Stalker, created by Jeff Rice and starring Darren McGavin. The show ran for only one season (1974-75) but proved a hit in syndication.

The series centered on Carl Kolchak, a reporter for the Chicago-based Independent News Service Stories, who investigated bizarre crimes committed by supernatural agents.

Depp, currently on screen in Dark Shadows (also based on an old TV show), is producing with Christi Dembrowski.

D.V. DeVincentis is best known for co-writing Grosse Pointe Blank and High Fidelity. He most recently wrote the screenplay for Lay the Favorite, the Stephen Frears-directed dramedy starring Rebecca Hall, Bruce Willis and Catherine Zeta-Jones.

D.V. DeVincentis is repped by UTA, Management 360 and Morris Yorn.
