THEATER
Lea Michele to Star in "The Little Mermaid" at the Hollywood Bowl
Thingamabobs? She's got 20!

March 30, 2019

Lea Michele is quite the songstress. Of course, this is a widely known fact as we all remember her Glee days portraying theatre aficionado-turned-star Rachel Berry. Upon hearing her sing “Defying Gravity” from Wicked in one of the early episodes, we became instant lifelong stans, though Lea’s theatrical career started much earlier than that. After Glee came to an end following season six (moment of silence please), Lea went on to do much more acting, including a hit role in the series Scream Queens. But for those who have been dying to see Lea belt her face off once again, things are about to feel so much better.

Hold onto your thingamabobs because Lea is headed to the Hollywood Bowl to star as Ariel in The Little Mermaid. According to Broadway World, Lea be diving under the sea for two performances only on May 17 and 18, where she will perform some of the iconic mermaid’s most memorable songs.

Shaking? Same! But who will play Ursula, the baddest witch of the waters who steals Ariel’s voice? None other than Broadway icon Harvey Fierstein, known for his portrayal of Edna Turnblad in the original cast of Hairspray. The production will also star Cheech Marin as Chef Louis, Peter Gallagher as King Triton (hello Sandy Cohen!), Leo Gallo as Prince Eric, and Ken Page as Sebastian.

Honestly, we have so many questions: Will Lea dye her hair red? Will she move around on rollerblades like in the Broadway production? Will Harvey's version of Ursula leave our poor unfortunate souls rendered speechless? Either way, we’re so excited for this production and the many YouTube videos of Lea’s performance that we will be binge-watching for the rest of eternity.

HOUSTON MATTERS
Houston Symphony Celebrates The Music Of The Little Mermaid
The orchestra will screen the Disney classic while performing the score live.

MICHAEL HAGERTY | POSTED ON AUGUST 30, 2019, 12:35 PM

Disney’s classic animated film The Little Mermaid was released in 1989.

When Disney released The Little Mermaid in 1989, it revived the studio’s legendary animated film wing.

Among the many things that made the film a new classic — whose popularity still endures today — is its score and many memorable songs, such as Under the Sea, and Part of Your World.

The Houston Symphony will pay homage to that music this weekend when it screens the film with an orchestra performing the score live.

In the audio above, Houston Matters producer Joshua Zinn and his mother, Jennifer Zinn De Waelsche, share a personal story about power of the film’s score. Then, he talks about the score with guest conductor Jason Seber.

The Little Mermaid Film with Live Orchestra:

Saturday, Aug. 31, at 7:30 p.m.
Sunday, Sept. 1, at 2:30 p.m.
