Vedremo

'Lego Ninjago Movie' Director Tackling Live-Action 'Lady and the Tramp' (Exclusive)

Charlie Bean would helm the live-action/CG hybrid looking to be made for Disney’s digital streaming service that will launch in 2019.

Bean has closed a deal to helm the live-action/CG hybrid remake of Disney’s animated classic, Lady and the Tramp.

Brigham Taylor, who worked on the studio’s remake of The Jungle Book, is producing the project, which is looking to be made for Disney’s digital streaming service that will launch in 2019.

The service will have four to six movies a year among content that will include film and TV offerings from Disney brands Pixar, Marvel and Star Wars.

The fact that a remake of such a marquee and essential Disney title such as Lady and the Tramp will likely head to the service is another example of how serious Disney is taking the service’s content. (The company recently hired Jon Favreau to write and exec produce a live-action Star Wars television series.)

Tramp, released in 1955, told the love story between a pampered Cocker Spaniel named Lady and a streetwise mongrel named Tramp. Lady finds herself out on the street after her owners have a baby and is saved from a pack by Tramp, who tries to show her to live her life footloose and collar-free. More doggone adventures ensue.

The centerpiece of the movie is the candlelit spaghetti dinner in an alley while two human cooks sing and play "Bella Notte," considered one of the most iconic scenes in Disney and movie history.

Andrew Bujalski penned the script for the remake.

Jessica Virtue and Chaz Salembier are overseeing for Disney.

Bean is a longtime animator who has written on Dexter’s Laboratory and Samurai Jack and directed 18 out of the 19 episodes of Disney XD’s Tron: Uprising before making his feature debut with Ninjago. Tramp now trampolines the director into the live-action world while still keeping him tethered to animation.

He is repped by Verve.

Disney’s ‘Lady And The Tramp’ Reboot Sets First Cast With ‘Extras’ & ‘Sherlock Gnomes’ Actress Ashley Jensen
by Andreas Wiseman

EXCLUSIVE: Extras and Sherlock Gnomes actress Ashley Jensen is the first cast aboard for Disney’s Lady And The Tramp reboot, I understand.

Jensen has landed a supporting role in the anticipated pic voicing Scottish Terrier Jackie (in the original movie it was Jock), a loyal supporter to Lady. Disney is currently gathering lead and supporting cast on the movie, which could potentially go into production later this year.

Disney recently tapped The Lego Ninjago Movie director Charlie Bean to helm the live-action/CG hybrid update of the animated classic, which is a priority project for the studio’s as-yet-untitled streaming service slated to launch in late 2019.

The movie will be an exclusive to the service — which will include film and TV content from Disney, Pixar, Marvel and Lucasfilm — and it won’t have a theatrical run.

The 1955 original followed an upper-middle-class American cocker spaniel named Lady who meets a streetsmart, downtown stray mongrel called the Tramp, and the two embark on many romantic adventures including that iconic spaghetti smooch dinner scene.

Andrew Bujalski wrote the script for the new adaption, which Brigham Taylor is producing.

Jensen was nominated for an Emmy for her role in BBC-HBO series Extras and was also a regular on ABC’s Ugly Betty. Small screen credits also include recent Amazon original Catastrophe. Features include The Lobster and Hysteria while she has notched up a string of supporting roles in major family movies including Gnomeo & Juliet,The Pirates! Band Of Misfits and Arthur Christmas.

Disney movie filming in Savannah to impact areas downtown

A Disney movie filming entirely in Savannah is expected to impact some downtown locations later this year. The movie, with the production title "Goodbye Stranger," will be filming in Factors Walk near Wet Willies and Johnson and Wright squares, according to the city. Filming is expected to begin September 10, lasting through December.

On Thursday, the film’s producers attended a City Council Workshop at City Hall. They told council the movie is a love story that’s set in the 1910 era. Executive Producer Diane Sabatini, with Collar Free Productions, said the team selected Savannah because of its historic architecture and beautiful squares. She added that it looks like the city is “sprinkled with magic.”

The film's crew has requested to make some cosmetic changes to their filming locations downtown. They plan to remove some sidewalk signs, bike racks and benches and add gas streetlights flags and other era-appropriate props.

News outlets report a casting call for paid background actors was scheduled for this weekend in Savannah. Filming of the project Walt Disney producers are calling “Goodbye Stranger” is expected to begin in September and continue into November.

The film’s director, Charlie Bean, told city council members at a meeting earlier this month that Savannah’s downtown historic district was the perfect setting for the movie’s “nostalgic romance.”

Disney producers present film plan to City of Savannah

The film office and movie producers made their first presentation to city council members on Thursday. They'll be filming the entirety of the film in Savannah. The crew says the city will be easily recognizable in the final product they release sometime next year.

Filming begins Sept. 10 and will wrap up outside around Nov. 7, weather permitting. Crews will be filming on a stage until December. The estimated local impact is about $20 million. They'll also be hiring local talent and using small businesses for the project. Johnson and Wright squares will be closed at various points to shoot the movie. They'll also use a portion of River Street. You can expect the area to look nearly identical to how it would look in the early 1900s. The film crew says the authenticity of Savannah made it an easy decision to choose to film here.

The natural question is, what's the name of the film? Right now, the working title is "Goodbye Stranger." We did some digging and found a crew call website that lists "Goodbye Stranger" as a working title for "Lady and the Tramp."

Exclusive: Tessa Thompson to Star in ‘Lady and the Tramp’ for Disney’s Streaming Service

Hot on the heels of her work in two of the year’s most acclaimed films, Sorry to Bother You and Annihilation, Tessa Thompson is in negotiations to voice the lead role in Disney’s live-action/CG hybrid remake of Lady and the Tramp, Collider has exclusively learned. Additionally, Doctor Strange star Benedict Wong has been set to voice Bull, an English bulldog.

The original 1955 animated classic tells the story of a female American cocker spaniel named Lady who lives with a refined, upper-middle-class family, and a male stray mongrel known as the Tramp. When the two dogs meet, they embark on a romantic adventure (think iconic spaghetti kiss) and eventually fall in love. As we previously reported, Justin Theroux will voice the Tramp, and now it’ll be Thompson chowing down on the other end of that iconic piece of spaghetti.

Kiersey Clemons (Dope) will play the character of Darling, while Emmy-nominated actress Ashley Jensen (Extras) will voice a Scottish Terrier named Jackie, who’s one of Lady’s closest friends. In the original movie, the character was named Jock.

Charlie Bean (The LEGO Ninjago Movie) is directing from a script by Andrew Bujalski, and Brigham Taylor is producing the film, which isn’t expected to receive a theatrical release, as it will be exclusive to Disney’s streaming service once it launches in late 2019.

Thompson has been in high demand ever since she starred opposite Michael B. Jordan in Creed. She was quickly cast as Valkyrie in Thor: Ragnarok, which made Thompson a fan favorite within the MCU, and also landed a key role on HBO’s Westworld, which bolstered her popularity among fans of elevated sci-fi — something that only increased with her turn in Annihilation. Sony clearly liked Thompson’s chemistry with Chris Hemsworth in Ragnarok, as the studio cast them as the leads in its Men in Black spinoff. The actress will soon reprise her role in Creed II, so she should end her year with a bang if all goes as planned at the box office. Look for Thompson to garner Independent Spirit Awards buzz for her turn in Sorry to Bother You, which currently boasts a 94% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes. She’s represented by Greene & Associates Talent Agency, Mosaic and attorney Jeff Bernstein.

Like Thompson, Wong also co-starred in Annihilation and plays a role in the MCU, having recently appeared in Avengers: Infinity War. He recently wrapped Ang Lee‘s Gemini Man with Will Smith, as well as Armando Iannucci‘s The Personal History of David Copperfield, which stars Dev Patel as the title character. He also has the Syfy pilot Deadly Class in the can. Wong is represented by Anonymous Content and attorney Robert S. Wallerstein.

Disney had no comment on either casting.

Lady ends up meeting a mongrel known as the Tramp on the streets. They embark on a romantic journey and eventually fall in love.

Dear was the human owner who decided to get rid of Lady after the birth of their child.

Monáe, who is repped by WME, Wondaland Management and Ziffren Brittenham, will next be seen in Robert Zemeckis' Welcome to Marwen and is set for Focus Features' Harriet Tubman biopic, Harriet.

Exclusive: Disney’s Live-Action ‘Lady and the Tramp’ Will Use Real Dogs

There’s been a bit of debate over Disney’s “live-action” remakes recently concerning whether they actually are, in truth, live-action. The first few undoubtedly were—Cinderella, Pete’s Dragon, and of course Maleficent. But then Jon Favreau’s visually stunning The Jungle Book blurred the lines, with the young actor playing Mowgli serving as the film’s only true live-action element. And with The Lion King on the horizon, which features absolutely no humans and a ton of photoreal visual effects, it’s hard to say it actually is a live-action film.

So you’d be forgiven for assuming that Disney’s upcoming Lady and the Tramp remake might be treading similar territory. As it turns out, not only are there human actors in the film, but the titular pooches are being portrayed by real-life dogs. Collider’s own Christina Radish recently spoke with actor Thomas Mann about his new film Maine, and during the course of their conversation, Mann offered some tantalizing teases about Lady and the Tramp.

In addition to confirming a period setting, Mann said they’re using real live dogs in the movie. Now, it’s unclear if these dogs will be partially replaced in post-production or if visual effects will simply be applied to their mouths so they can speak, but it is heartening to know the film appears to be leaning towards a heavy live-action element during production.

Lady and the Tramp is poised to debut exclusively on Disney’s streaming service Disney+ and is currently in production with director Charlie Bean (The LEGO Ninjago Movie). Tessa Thompson and Justin Theroux provide the voices of the titular leads.

Check out what Mann had to say about Disney’s live-action Lady and the Tramp remake during his conversation with Collider below, and look for our full interview with the actor on Collider soon.

Collider: You went from doing something so sparse like Maine, to doing something like Lady and the Tramp. What’s it like to be on a set when you are one of the only human characters?

THOMAS MANN: Thank you for asking about that because it is very strange. Obviously, Lady and the Tramp is a little more comedic, for my character, at least. I get to be little more broad because of its period. That was actually something that was very, very different for me, whereas Maine is a character that’s the closest to myself that I’ve ever played.

There is such an interesting trend with these Disney classics, like Beauty and the Beast, Dumbo, The Lion King and now Lady and the Tramp, where we’re getting to see them in a different way. What most excites you about the way that you’re telling the story of Lady and the Tramp?

MANN: I really think it’s an enhanced version of the world that you saw before. Obviously, the human characters are a little more flushed out. They’re not these passing faces that you barely get a glimpse of. You get to know them a little bit better. And also, there are real dogs. Who doesn’t want to see two real dogs kiss over a plate of spaghetti? That is the main draw for me. You get the charisma of real dogs in there. Lady and the Tramp came out in 1955. I understand people who are like, “Don’t mess with the original,” but they aren’t re-animating it. It’s a live-action remake. So, why not?

Did you actually get to act with dogs, or were they not there?

MANN: The dogs were there. We shot with the dogs, every day. They were on set and they weren’t even trained. They found these dogs and started training them about three months before. They just wanted to find the perfect dogs. The main dog’s name was Rose, who played Lady. It was crazy because they didn’t know they were working, so they would run off in the middle of a take, and then come back over. You have to be extra patient because you have to be good every time for when they are good once. It was a lot of fun. It was so cute, every day, to just have a bunch of dogs to play with. It made the job a lot less stressful.

I’m excited about it because I love that story, but I also think it will be really interesting to see what’s done with it because it does feel like there are so many possibilities.

MANN: It’s a little more dramatic, too. I wouldn’t say that it’s a full-on drama or anything, but it’s a little more grown up, in its own way, and a little more sophisticated. It looks beautiful, in the few things that I’ve seen, from the way it was shot. The production design, alone, is pretty immaculate.

That’s so cool! I cried with the Dumbo trailer, so I’m excited to see what Lady and the Tramp looks like, as well.

MANN: Just wait! It will be amazing! These dogs are movie stars.

‘Lady and the Tramp’ Will Reinvent Problematic Siamese Cat Song, Feature New Music From Janelle Monae (EXCLUSIVE)

Grammy winner Janelle Monae will contribute new music to the Disney Plus streaming title “Lady and the Tramp,” in addition to her voice role in the live-action reboot.

Monae will perform two original songs for the film, led by Tessa Thompson and Justin Theroux. Monae’s artist collective Wondaland is also “reinventing” a track from the original 1955 animated movie, individuals close to the project said.

That would be “The Siamese Cat Song,” originally recorded by Peggy Lee for the feline duo Si and Am in the animated version. Those characters and their famous refrain — “We are Siamese if you please / We are Siamese if you don’t please” — have long been considered a cringe-worthy depiction of Asian culture.

Wondaland contributors Nate “Rocket” Wonder and Roman GianArthur are working on a different take for the pair, who in the new film are not Siamese cats, the insiders added. Walt Disney Studios confirmed Monae’s musical involvement, as did a rep for the singer.

“We’re dealing with Wondaland, her team of incredibly creative writers and producers that she works with. So our director has engaged with her in terms of what the storytelling [of] the song needs to be,” Kaylin Frank, a vice president in Creative Music and Soundtracks at Disney, said at the recent MUSEXPO Creative Summit in Burbank, Calif.

Frank reassured the conference that while the film is set in 1910 and has a blues-ragtime vibe, Monae’s personal sound will be represented. There’s also a possibility Wondaland will do a pass on the film’s signature song “He’s A Tramp,” another individual added.

In a 2013 analysis of the cat song at culture blog Flavorwire, one author found the depiction of Si and Am a result of a post WWII anxiety America had about the foreign “other,” saying they came to represent a duplicitous and seductive team with shady motives.

“They have no individuality; their innocent blue eyes bend into a sinister glare as they cave at the slant. They are jaundiced and sly; sick and feral; domesticated, though nevertheless propelled by their mischievous, impish nature to deceive and intimidate,” wrote author Marcus Hunter, who called them a “colonist nightmare.”

A retooling of the cat song would not be the first upgrade Disney has given to an animated classic seeing live-action translation. Who among us will soon forget the noise around the “exclusively gay” moment director Bill Condon added to Emma Watson’s “Beauty and the Beast” — in service of Josh Gad’s character Le Fou, who in that original animation pined for the beefy alpha male Gaston with no clear motivation.

Upcoming live-action takes like “Aladdin” and “Mulan” will also accurately represent the racial makeup of their respective characters.

The OTT service Disney Plus is expected to launch in mid-November, and “Lady” soon after.

Roftl.gif
