EXCLUSIVE: I didn’t see this one coming. After directing one of the most talked-about films at Sundance Ain’t Them Bodies Saints, David Lowery has hired on with writing partner Toby Halbrooks to script Pete’s Dragon for Disney and producer Jim Whitaker. I’m told they will reinvent the core story of a venerable Disney family film. It will not be a musical and at this point Lowery is just engaged as writer. The original 1977 Pete’s Dragon mixed an animated fire-breather with a live-action cast of actors that included Mickey Rooney, Red Buttons, Shelley Winters, Helen Reddy and Jim Dale, with Sean Marshall playing the orphan boy who comes to a town with his magical dragon, his abusive adoptive parents in hot pursuit.

It is certainly a departure for Lowery, who made the jump from editor to director on Saints, a gritty drama he wrote and directed that stars Rooney Mara, Rami Malek, Casey Affleck and Ben Foster. It’s the tale of an outlaw who escapes prison and sets across the Texas hills to reunite with his wife and the daughter he has never met. The film was acquired by IFC, which will release the pic August 16. He made a small feature called St. Nick, about runaway children who have to fend for themselves in the wild, so he has explored themes of innocence and magical realism. And he and Halbrooks made the Sundance short Pioneer, which was essentially an epic bedtime story.

È vero non ci avevo pensato, mmmm se è un altro bambino sarebbe allora un sequel più che un remake, però non so, anche se meno di prima rimango un po' scettico.

Elliott, il Drago Invisibile: David Lowery in trattative per dirigere il remake

Un anno fa è stato annunciato che la Walt Disney Pictures era interessata a sviluppare un remake del cult ibrido live action-animazione del 1977 Elliott, il Drago Invisibile. A lavorare alla sceneggiatura erano stati messi David Lowery e Toby Halbrooks: la scelta di Lowery aveva colpito perché si tratta dell'autore di Ain't Them Bodies Saints, opera prima presentata al Sundance dai toni decisamente cupi e violenti.

Oggi arriva un aggiornamento che, curiosamente, prosegue in quella direzione: Lowery è infatti in trattative anche per la regia del film. Toby Halbrooks, suo partner di sceneggiatura, è confermato allo script assieme a lui.

La storia di Elliott, il Drago Invisibile (Pete's Dragon in originale) era incentrata su Pete, un giovane orfanello con un amico invisibile, Elliot, un enorme drago animato. Il film del 1977 era un musical, mentre il nuovo film non lo sarà, e a quanto pare prenderà le distanze nella trama reinventando l'originale. E' praticamente certo che Elliott verrà realizzato in CGI.

Eliott, il drago invisibile: Oakes Fegley e Oona Laurence sono nel cast

Uno dei remake di prossima uscita di cui non abbiamo sentito parlare nei mesi passati è sicuramente quello di Eliott, il drago invisibile, film del 1977 distribuito dalla Walt Disney Pictures.
Ora Variety informa che il giovane Oakes Fegley è entrato nel cast nel ruolo di Pete; il giovane attore è nel cast della serie Boardwalk Empire. Nel cast troverà spazio anche Oona Laurence nei panni di Natalie, amica di Pete. Rispetto all'originale, questa nuova pellicola non sarà un musical ed unirà live action con animazione CGI, quest'ultima per realizzare Elliott.

Saremmo stati meglio continuando a non sentirne parlare.

Infatti...

Impossibile replicare la magia dell'animazione di Ken Anderson e poi senza Helen, senza Betty (in Italiano) e senza "Candle on the water", che Elliott è ?

Ma perché ora fanno fiabe dal vivo e pure il remake di Elliott!?! Non possono fare qualche altro film avventuroso come la saga dei pirati dei Caraibi e National treasure!?!

Forse perchè soffrono di crisi d'idee e il pubblico stesso neanche li supporta quando realizzano film come "Jhon Carter" (che è stato un floppone). Che poi questo film lo avrei potuto (relativamente) giustificare se fosse stato un seguito, ma qui si tratta di un remake di un film degli anni 70' che viene aggiornato per i nostri tempi con elementi come Elliot in CGI che in certo senso è più banale (ci sono un sacco di personaggi creati così oggi) rispetto a quello 2D.

Dopo Captain America: The Winter Soldier, sembra che l'attore Robert Redford tornerà a collaborare con la Walt Disney ad un progetto piuttosto diverso: il remake di Elliott, il drago invisibile. 
The Hollywood Reporter rivela che l'attore è in trattative con la Disney per interpretare il ruolo di un raccontastorie del posto che sa delle storie piuttosto interessanti sui draghi. Il nuovo film sarà diretto da David Lowery che ha anche co-scritto la sceneggiatura in collaborazione con Toby Halbrooks. Le riprese sono previste per la fine dell'anno.

Sembra che il film proceda davvero. Riprese previste in Australia e nuova entry nel cast.

Bryce Dallas Howard is in early talks to play the female lead in Disney’s “Pete’s Dragon” reboot.

Robert Redford is also in talks to star with Oakes Fegley playing the title character.

David Lowery is set to direct from a script he wrote with Toby Halbrooks.

The story is a reinvention of the 1977 film that revolves around Pete and his best friend Elliot, who happens to be dragon. The first pic was a musical, but sources say this will be a straight narrative. The movie will be live-action with CGI used to bring the dragon to life.

Jim Whitaker is producing.

Howard, who is repped by ICM Partners and Management 360, can be seen next in “Jurassic World.” Other past credits include “The Help,” “Hereafter” and “50/50.”

Robert Redford will star in Disney's 'Pete's Dragon'
The mixed CGI and live action film will be based at Peter Jackson's Stone Street Studios, home of 'The Hobbit' films

The Walt Disney Studios has confirmed that live-action and CGI film Pete’s Dragon will be filmed in New Zealand from January to April 2015.


Production will be based at Peter Jackson’s Stone Street Studios in the nation’s capital of Wellington.

Pete’s Dragon, to star Robert Redford, Boardwalk Empire actor Oakes Fegley and Matilda’s Oona Laurence, is the first studio feature to use Stone Street since production wrapped on The Hobbit films. Filming will also take place in several locations around New Zealand including the Bay of Plenty, Wellington and Canterbury regions. Its unclear if Weta Digital, another of Jackson’s companies, housed in the same suburb as Stone Street, will be doing the CGI on the film.

Bryce Dallas Howard is in talks to join the cast of the film, which is set against the backdrop of loggers cutting down a forest. Pete is a boy whose parents died in car crash, and who has been subsequently raised by Elliot, the titular dragon, who resides in the threatened forest.

“We were searching for a shooting location that captures the wonder and spirit of Pete’s Dragon,” said producer Jim Whitaker. “The New Zealand aesthetic beautifully matches what the screenplay requires, and we’re grateful to receive such tremendous support from the filmmaking community and industry in this country.”

Gisella Carr, CEO of Film New Zealand, the country’s national film office, said the shoot was secured after two years of negotiation. “We’re delighted to welcome back Disney which has such a long history of production in this country,” she said. “It’s great to see the combination of New Zealand’s favourable screen incentives, locations and skill base have enabled such a high-profile production to come here.”

Production on Pete’s Dragon will coincide with another major Disney shoot in the region: Pirates Of the Caribbean 5 is set to go into production in Australia in February.

Elliott, il drago invisibile: anche Wes Bentley è nel cast

The Wrap rivela che l'attore Wes Bentley (American Beauty, Interstellar, Hunger Games, Ghost Rider) è entrato nel cast del remake di Elliott, il drago invisibile. Il suo ruolo, attualmente, non è stato rivelato.

Il casting del remake di Elliott, il drago invisibile della Walt Disney Pictures continua. Ed infatti, Variety rivela che Michael C. Hall (Dexter) si è unito al cast del film, andando ad affiancare Robert Redford, Oakes Fegley, Bryce Dallas Howard, Wes Bentley e Oona Laurence.
