UPDATE: Production Weekly has posted a retraction to the listing in their production guide which listed Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson as the star of McG's 20 Leagues Under the Sea: Captain Nemo. McG told SCI Fi Wire that he hasn't even spoken to Johnson.

Said McG, "I don't know where that came from. I've never spoken to Dwayne Johnson. You can be the first to report that I have no idea where that came from. I wish him every success, but I never spoke to Dwayne about this."

He added that the movie is still being offered to Will Smith.

Randall Wallace (Braveheart) has been brought aboard to rewrite Captain Nemo: 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, Disney's take on the classic Jules Verne character being directed by McG, says The Hollywood Reporter.

The film aims to tell the origin of Captain Nemo and his submarine warship, the Nautilus. Nemo is a mysterious but noble antagonist in the book, a scientific genius with a thirst for knowledge and a desire for revenge against the forces of imperialism.

The script previously was worked by Bill Marsilii and Justin Marks.

McG Discusses TERMINATOR 5 and 20,000 LEAGUES UNDER THE SEA!!

IESB sat down with McG, who chatted about the status of his various projects - including 20,000 LEAGUES UNDER THE SEA (aka CAPTAIN NEMO) and the next TERMINATOR installment.

His comments seem to reinforce previous suggestions that John Connor's Future War would spill into our time in T5.

Says McG:

McG: Yeah. I'm prepping 20,000 Leagues, every day, but I'm concurrently prepping Terminator 5, another Terminator picture.

IESB: Do you want to take time off between Terminator films?

McG: It's interesting. Obviously, Michael Bay had tremendous success following Transformers, in a very short window. Sometimes people like to take time off, but I'm excited about the next installation of the story, in the Terminator idea.

So, for me, it's terribly exciting to get back out there and show a different face of that idea, and perhaps get out of the apocalyptic world and into a contemporary world. I think the audience is going to be very excited about our way in.

When asked about the dense flak clouds of criticism regularly hurled towards him by the Geek Sector, McG responded:

It's interesting because a lot of people don't like me, but a lot of people just don't like my name. I can't take that too seriously because that's been my name my whole life. It's not something that I prescribed myself. So, I just gotta roll forward and, hopefully, have the films do the talking.

Mr....G?...also touched on what we can expect from his 20,000 LEAGUES UNDER THE SEA project.

McG: It's a bit of a departure from the Richard Fleischer movie, and much more in keeping with the spirit of the novel, as far as what Aronnax is up to and the becoming of Captain Nemo, and how the man became at war with war itself. So, there's a little bit more meat on the bone, in regard to the genesis of the Nemo character, than you're given in the ‘50's movie that Disney made. Also, it's a little more contemporary.

McG indicates that his Nemo film will have "a great deal of action", and offered his perception of LEAGUES author Jules Verne:

I grew up on his body of work, and the imagination to come out of the mid-19th century is extraordinary. I'm active in the Jules Verne society, and I am very passionate about protecting his legacy.

Variety reports that Walt Disney Pictures has halted Captain Nemo: 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea. Production was tentatively scheduled to begin in February, but director McG is no longer on board.

Disney's next big water-based shoot will likely be Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, with filming expected to start in May under the direction of Rob Marshall. Johnny Depp is returning as Captain Jack Sparrow.

McG will concentrate on other projects that include Dead Spy Running, a Warner Bros. drama that Stephen Gaghan is writing.

Disney has put "Captain Nemo: 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea" in dry dock.

The picture, tentatively scheduled to begin production in February, has been halted indefinitely, and McG is no longer steering the ship.

The studio confirmed that it won't proceed with the film for now, and reps for the director confirmed he has withdrawn. While names like Will Smith were rumored as possible stars, no cast was ever set. The project had been on a fast track under the Dick Cook regime. Studio sez event pics like "20,000 Leagues," "John Carter of Mars" and "Tron" are still priority under new chief Rich Ross.

Disney's next big water-based shoot will likely be the fourth installment of “Pirates of the Caribbean.” Pic is expected to set sail in May, with Rob Marshall in talks to direct.

McG will concentrate on other projects that include "Dead Spy Running," a Warner Bros. drama that Stephen Gaghan is writing. McG is also attached to "Terminator 5," though that movie is on hold indefinitely as the Terminator franchise works its way through bankruptcy court. McG also just teamed with "Borat" helmer Larry Charles on a new NBC comedy (Daily Variety, Nov. 16).

Nessuno dei suoi film mi ha mai soddisfatto (forse al massimo il primo Charlie's Angels), ma soprattutto per l'enomre delusione di Terminator Salvation al quale tenevo molto e le cui premesse sembravano ottime, invece ha rovinato tutto.

Io penso che con Terminator abbia fatto un buon lavoro, semmai era la sceneggiatura che andava un pochino rivista ma a livello di effetti, fotografia, regia e recitazione mi è sembrato ottimo. Poi ognuno ha i suoi gusti. Io però non mi sento nè di difenderlo nè di accusarlo, visto che ha fatto praticamente 3 film: Charlie's Angels 1 e 2 e Terminator. Stop. Comunque ormai è fuori dal progetto, quindi siamo off topic .

Ha fatto anche We are Marshall che da noi non credo sia neanche mai arrivato... ma critica e pubblico hanno gradito ben poco.
Tuttavia lui è il produttore di Supernatural, serie che mi piace tantissimo.
In ogni caso ora in scuderia abbiamo SPIELBERG! Non sarebbe fantastico se dirigesse lui il progetto?

Aspè... Intendo che ora Spielberg è in affari con la Disney tramite l'accordo di distribuzione.
Leggevo che obiettivo di Iger con l'accordo era anche ingraziarselo e far dirigere a lui qualche film Disney. E 20000 leghe sotto i mari, secondo me, sarebbe una occasione STREPITOSA!!!

Alla conferenza stampa di presentazione delle prossime produzioni, Rich Ross ha dichiarato di aver sospeso 20.000 Leghe sotto i mari perchè "troppo dark". Non esclude però la possibilità di ripescarlo in futuro.
Mi sembrava di capire che a Hollywood il dark fosse piuttosto apprezzato, forse Ross preferiva un film per famigliole in stile Corsa a Witch Mountain
