Da The Disinsider

Exclusive: Disney Developing Live-Action ‘The Snow Queen’ Film

Back in February, we brought you the news that Disney is in early development on a live-action Rapunzel film, which isn’t expected to be a Tangled remake. Well, the studio has its sights on another classic story.

We have learned that Disney is in early development on a live-action adaptation of Hans Christian Andersen’s fairy-tale The Snow Queen.

Story details on the project are being kept under wraps; however, we do know the project is being developed for a theatrical release. Kristin Burr (Cruella, Christopher Robin) is on board producing.

Fans are well aware that this isn’t the first time Disney has tackled The Snow Queen story as Disney Animation Studios’ billion-dollar franchise Frozen is loosely based on the story, and was even titled Snow Queen early in the development of the first film, but before you all start calling this new film a “live-action Frozen remake;” We have been told that The Snow Queen is a brand new film altogether.

The Snow Queen was also featured on the hit Disney-owned ABC series Once Upon A Time, played Elizabeth Mitchell, Ingrid the Snow Queen (also known as Sarah Fisher) is the main antagonist turned anti-hero in the first half of the fourth season and is the maternal aunt of Elsa and Anna.

Published on December 21, 1844, The Snow Queen centers on the struggle between good and evil as experienced by Gerda and her friend, Kai. The story is one of Andersen’s longest and most highly acclaimed stories. It is regularly included in selected tales and collections of his work and is frequently reprinted in illustrated storybook editions for children.

Potrebbero chiamarlo Andersen's Snow Queen / La Reine des neiges d'Andersen

Dal sito We Got This Covered:

Disney Developing Dark, Live-Action Remake Of Frozen, Based On Snow Queen

The world is still in the grip of Frozen fever, with Frozen 2 decimating the competition and ruling the box office ever since its debut. Disney has created one of their biggest franchise hits with the two films and now they’re ready to plumb its depth even further for more, as according to our sources – the same ones who said the Mouse House was doing an Aladdin sequel, which we now know to be true – a live-action remake of Frozen is in the works but the catch is that it’ll be based on and stay very true to The Snow Queen, which was the original inspiration for the film.

Written by Hans Christian Andersen way back in 1844, The Snow Queen is a story about the struggle between good and evil as demonstrated by the battle between the heroes Gerda and Kai, and the antagonist, the icy and forbidding Snow Queen. After Kai gets a fragment of an enchanted mirror in his eye, he becomes cruel and uncaring, falling under the spell of the falling snow and their mistress the Snow Queen, who seduces him away from his home and into her servitude. The rest of the story deals with Kai’s imprisonment under the Snow Queen, and Gerda’s quest to find and save him.

Of course, most of the plot of The Snow Queen was reworked for Frozen, as the evil Queen became the misunderstood Elsa, while Gerda and Kai became Anna and Kristoff, respectively. Now, Disney intends to make a much more direct adaptation of the original story, which will essentially result in a live-action remake of Frozen, only it’ll presumably be titled The Snow Queen and be much, much darker and with more horror elements, including a cackling demon who’s the owner of the magic mirror and scenes where the people of the world, infected by pieces of said mirror, begin to see only the bad and ugly side of things and act accordingly.

Dal sito The Disinsider:

Lastly, Disney has tons of projects that go on grids that don’t see the light of day. Those projects include live-action Rapunzel and Snow Queen films. As well as Disney+ projects such as Tom Sawyer. That doesn’t mean they won’t eventually happen, it simply means they are on the table at the studio.

[...]

Whether or not it is a good idea creatively, a live-action "Moana" has the makings of a hit all over it, and that's why it's happening. It's also why industry scooper Daniel Richtman indicates similar remakes of "Frozen" and "Tangled" are on the way as well, which The Hollywood Reporter's Borys Kit stopped just short of confirming in THR's write-up of the "Moana" news.

[...]

Up until now, it has not remade any title from the 21st century, preferring to keep some distance from animated and classic versions. But the studio’s strategy now seems to be changing, and it may not be long before movies such as Frozen or Tangled are targeted.

[...]
