Disney Announces Emily Blunt To Star In 'Mary Poppins' Sequel

Disney has recently hit a new creative stride—reimagining some of its animated classics as live action adventures including this year’s The Jungle Book, which has already grossed $500 million worldwide. So, unsurprisingly, the studio is doubling down with nine new fairytale-skewed movies in the works including a Mary Poppins sequel.

The company announced it has earmarked several new release dates through 2019 on the movie calendar on Monday, though in typical Disney fashion didn’t reveal the titles associated to each date. Instead, it offered up a glimpse at its upcoming production slate full to the brim with childhood favorites.

The most crucial release is confirmation of a Mary Poppins sequel starring Emily Blunt. The idea has been rumored for some months but is now official. Blunt will play Poppins—the iconic role previously filled by Julie Andrews in the 1964 musical. The sequel will be directed by Rob Marshall, who previously oversaw Blunt in Into the Woods. Lin-Manuel Miranda, the rising theater star currently starring in the lead role in Broadway musical Hamilton, will co-star.

Dal sito Forbes.com:

the Mary Poppins sequel will presumably acknowledge the continuity of the 1964 original

Meryl Streep Joins Emily Blunt in ‘Mary Poppins’ Sequel (EXCLUSIVE)

Is Meryl Streep ready for a spoonful of sugar?

Sources tell Variety, the Oscar-winning actress is in talks to join Emily Blunt and Lin Manuel-Miranda in Disney’s “Mary Poppins Returns.”

If a deal closes, the family film would reunite Streep with the “Into the Woods” musical team of Blunt, director Rob Marshall, and producers Marc Platt and John DeLuca. Streep and Blunt also shared the screen in “The Devil Wears Prada.” Marshall and John De Luca are also producing.

Streep is said to play the role of Poppins’ cousin, Topsy, a supporting role that wasn’t in the 1964 classic. Streep would also sing for the part, much like she did in “Into the Woods,” which earned her a record 19th Oscar nomination.

David Magee wrote the screenplay, based on the stories by P.L. Travers, with Marc Shaiman composing an all-new score and writing originals songs with Emmy nominee and Tony-winner Scott Wittman.

Blunt stars as the title character in the film with Manuel-Miranda, star of the Broadway smash “Hamilton,” playing another new character, a street lamplighter named Jack. Drawing from the wealth of material in P.L. Travers’ seven Mary Poppins novels, the story will take place in Depression-era London (when the books were originally written) and follows a now-grown Jane and Michael Banks, who, along with Michael’s three children, are visited by the enigmatic Mary Poppins following a personal loss. Through her unique magical skills, and with the aid of her friend Jack, she helps the family rediscover the joy and wonder missing in their lives.

Streep, who appeared at the Democratic Convention this week, can be seen next in the Paramount pic “Florence Foster Jenkins” which bows on Aug. 12. She is repped by CAA.

Travers, Mary Poppins Comes Back.

Dal sito The Knowledge Online:

Mary Poppins Returns films early 2017 in UK

Disney’s much-anticipated follow-up to Mary Poppins is in early pre-production readying for a UK shoot at the start of 2017.

Mary Poppins Returns will star Emily Blunt as the eponymous nanny and Broadway star Lin-Manuel Miranda as Jack the lamplighter.

Musician Miranda has previous experience of working with the Mouse House as he composed some of the additional music for Star Wars: The Force Awakens and is one of the three main composers on the studio’s upcoming animated feature Moana.

The film is set in Depression-era London, where the original Banks children are now grown-up with a family of their own. But when tragedy strikes, the magical Mary Poppins appears in their lives once again.

David Magee has written the screenplay which will be directed by Rob Marshall; the latter also produces alongside Marc Platt and John DeLuca.

Staremo a vedere.

Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious! Julie Andrews & Dick Van Dyke to Appear in Mary Poppins Sequel?!

The upcoming Mary Poppins sequel just got even better.

We already know that Emily Blunt and Lin-Manuel Miranda are set to star in the Rob Marshall-directed musical movie, but now I'm hearing...plans are also underway for Julie Andrews and Dick Van Dyke to appear in the film.

Yup, the original Mary Poppins and Bert!

Details about their appearance are unknown. A rep for Andrews says there have been "no discussions" about the Hollywood legends popping up in the film.

The original 1964 film won five Oscars, including the best actress in a leading role statuette going to Andrews.

Blunt will star as the title character in the new film with the Tony-winning Hamilton impresario playing a lamplighter named Jack.

When I chatted with Miranda at the Tony Awards in June he said he didn't know if Andrews was going to be a part of the project.

He did say the script wasn't "done yet," but he also gushed, "I've heard the songs and they're amazing."

E! News confirmed last week that Meryl Streep was in talks to join the cast as Mary Poppins' cousin Topsy.

Disney has set Mary Poppins for a Christmas 2018 release.

Dal sito Playbill:

Will Julie Andrews and Dick Van Dyke Join Mary Poppins Returns?

They would join a cast that already includes Emily Blunt and Lin-Manuel Miranda.

Plans are underway to feature original Mary Poppins film stars Julie Andrews and Dick Van Dyke in the upcoming sequel Mary Poppins Returns, according to an unsourced report in E!

Though the article quotes an Andrews spokesperson saying there have been “no discussions” about the appearance, the story speculates that the pair is being sought to appear in the film. There are no details about what roles they would play. Andrews won the Oscar as Best Actress for her performance in the 1964 Disney classic.

Variety recently reported that Academy Award winner Meryl Streep is in final talks to join Disney’s film sequel. Streep, who starred as The Witch in Disney’s film adaptation of the Stephen Sondheim-James Lapine musical Into the Woods, would reunite with director Rob Marshall and co-star Emily Blunt on the project.

Streep would play Topsy, Mary Poppins’ cousin, who was not seen in the original 1964 film. It is also reported that her part would be a singing role.

Blunt, who played the Baker's Wife in Into the Woods and co-starred with Streep in The Devil Wears Prada, will play Mary Poppins, alongside Hamilton creator and star Lin-Manuel Miranda, who will play Jack, a lamplighter. The film is based on other books in P.L. Travers’ series of books on the adventures of the magical nanny.

Hairspray Tony winners Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman will compose the film's original score.

Mary Poppins Returns is set to premiere December 25, 2018. Filming will begin later this year in London.
