Sam Mendes In Early Talks To Direct Disney’s Live-Action ‘Pinocchio’

by Anita Busch
May 22, 2017 4:31pm

EXCLUSIVE: Sam Mendes is in early talks to direct Disney’s live-action Pinocchio; Chris Weitz wrote the current version of the script and will also be producing through his production company, Depth of Field. The move would push forward yet another live-action reboot of the old tried and true animated classic for the studio. Disney’s feature film strategy has been working well as its live-action Beauty And The Beast has made $1.2 billion worldwide and the photorealistic The Jungle Book grossed $966.5M worldwide.

RelatedColin Farrell In Negotiations For...
Jungle Book director Jon Favreau is tuning his Jungle Book VFX for The Lion King and Tim Burton is ready to roll on Dumbo. Others in the mix are The Little Mermaid, a Cruella De Vil movie, Aladdin, and Mulan.

The studio is also rebooting Mary Poppins and got a nice shout-out the other night from Dick Van Dyke at the premiere of HBO and George Shapiro’s If You’re Not In The Obit, Eat Breakfast. Van Dyke said he plays the son of the old banker in the film and also does a dance number in it. Despite being 91, he is still very agile.

Mendes just opened a play in London, directing playwright Jez Butterworth’s The Ferryman which stared Paddy Considine — and by the way, sold out within a day at the Royal Court. It has since closed at the Royal Court and will open at the West End on June 20.

Mendes, who won an Oscar for directing American Beauty and whose credits include the James Bond films Spectre and Skyfall, is repped by CAA, The Agency and law firm Ziffren Brittenham.

SAM MENDES EXITS DISNEY’S LIVE-ACTION “PINOCCHIO” (EXCLUSIVE) NOVEMBER 13, 2017

Oscar-winning filmmaker Sam Mendes has dropped out of directing Disney’s live-action Pinocchio, the Tracking Board has exclusively learned.

Back in May, Mendes was reportedly in “early talks” to direct the project, which was written by Chris Weitz, who is also producing via his Depth of Field banner.

Mendes’ exit represents a setback for Pinocchio, but Disney shouldn’t have a hard time finding a replacement, as the studio’s live-action adaptations of its animated classics have lured big names such as Jon Favreau, Tim Burton and Guy Ritchie. Meanwhile, Bill Condon recently steered Beauty and the Beast to a worldwide gross of $1.2 billion.

Mendes won an Oscar for American Beauty and most recently directed the James Bond films Skyfall and Spectre. The next James Bond movie, which is widely expected to be Daniel Craig’s last, still doesn’t have a director. With Denis Villeneuve busy with Dune, Yann Demange is believed to be the frontrunner for the coveted gig, but now that Mendes has a hole in his schedule, I wonder if he could re-team with Craig one more time so they could ride off into the sunset together.

Right now, sources are saying that Mendes’ exit from Pinocchio isn’t linked to Bond 25, but never say never in this town. Stay tuned…

Dal sito Hollywood Reporter:

Disney's Live-Action 'Pinocchio' Enlists 'Paddington' Director

The film will reimagine the 1940 classic.
Jiminy Cricket! Walt Disney Studios has found a director for its live-action reimagining of Pinocchio.

Paul King, helmer of the whimsical and acclaimed Paddington movies, has been chosen to direct the movie, with the studio hoping to being production in the fall.

Released in 1940, Pinocchio was the second animated film made by Disney, after 1937’s Snow White and the Seven Dwarves. It adapted the Italian story by Carlo Collodi about a wooden boy puppet crafted by an old carver named Geppetto. The puppet is brought to life by a fairy who says he will become a real boy if he shows bravery. The character of Jiminy Cricket becomes his de facto conscience and tries to steer him in the right direction. What follows is a series of adventures that include Pinocchio being kidnapped to be part of a puppet show, getting turned into a donkey and being swallowed by a whale.

Chris Weitz and his Depth of Field partner Andrew Miano are producing. Jack Thorne, who penned the surprise hit Wonder, is rewriting the script.

Sam Mendes was initially slated to direct the project but left last year. Peter Hedges and Weitz previously worked on the script.

There have been several live-action Pinocchio movies made, including one in 1996 from New Line Cinema that starred Martin Landau and Jonathan Taylor Thomas. None of those were made by Disney, however, which is currently in the midst of bringing to life, Blue Fairy-style, its animation library.

King has won over jaded execs and skeptical adults with his inventive storytelling in bringing to life the Paddington tales, becoming an in-demand filmmaker in the process. He just signed on to direct Warner Bros.’ Willy Wonka, a reimagining of Roald Dahl's classic children's book Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.

Disney’s Live-Action ‘Pinocchio’ Looking To Start Filming This Fall In The UK

It was recently reported that Paddington director Paul King will helm Disney’s live-action Pinocchio movie. Jack Throne (National Treasure) is currently doing rewrites on a script from Chris Weitz (Cinderella, Rogue One, About a Boy).

Omega Underground has learned that Disney aims to get filming going by this fall (depending on a finished script) and there is a solid sign that filming will be taking place in the United Kingdom.

The Paddington films have been very well received so there is an expectation King could make something very special here. King was also in talks to direct the Willy Wonka prequel for Warner Bros.

Considering the Italian roots to the story we’d hope they film in Italy as well, but we’re not holding our breath. These projects have been primarily shooting in England. Examples include Beauty and The Beast, Dumbo, Aladdin, and it’s expected that The Little Mermaid and Sword In The Stone will as well.

Disney slated a massive lineup of release dates but it remains to be seen where Pinocchio places on that list.

Disney’s Live-Action Pinocchio Writer Chris Weitz Says They’re Still Developing The Script (Exclusive)

Given that we’ve probably had updates of around five or so Disney live-action adaptations in the past two weeks alone, you’d be forgiven for forgetting a handful of them making their way to the big screen over the course of the next several years. Joining the likes of Lady and the Tramp, Mulan, Aladdin, and The Lion King is Pinocchio, the story about a walking, talking marionette who wishes he was a real boy.

This past February, it was reported that Paul King, the director of such films as Paddington and Paddington 2, would be helming the project, and set to write the script is none other than Chris Weitz, who recently penned Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.

Speaking with our own Gig Patta while promoting his upcoming directorial effort, Operation Finale, he gave us an update on the progress Pinocchio is making:

“It’s going to shoot in England and Italy starting next year. We’re still in the early stages of, you know, development and developing the script, so there’s no casting to talk about, but I’m very excited about it.”

This is pretty interesting since it seems to contradict earlier reports that the film was being rewritten by Jack Thorne, who recently wrote Wonder. If they were still in the process of developing the script, how could it be rewritten?

Regardless, Disney has had a solid working relationship with Weitz between his work as a writer on Rogue One, Cinderella, and now Pinocchio, so it seems the project is in good hands.

Are you looking forward to seeing what Weitz and King will bring to Pinocchio?

Dal sito The GWW:

DISNEY’S ‘PINOCCHIO’ LIVE-ACTION MOVIE LANDS ‘AVENGERS/GODZILLA’ CINEMATOGRAPHER SEAMUS MCGARVEY

Paddington’s Paul King was hired to direct Disney’s live-action Pinocchio movie with a script from screenwriter Chris Weitz (Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, Cinderella, About A Boy). We have a lovely crew update to share.

Omega Underground has learned that they’ve now landed cinematographer Seamus McGarvey. His credits include The Avengers, Godzilla, Atonement, Bad Times At The El Royale, Life, The Accountant, The Greatest Showman, and Pan.

Writer-producer Chris Weitz recently revealed to LRM they plan on filming to begin next year in Italy and the United Kingdom.

“It’s going to shoot in England and Italy starting next year. We’re still in the early stages of, you know, development and developing the script, so there’s no casting to talk about, but I’m very excited about it.”

We will certainly update when we have new production dates for the Disney movie.

Disney has yet to give Pinocchio a release date.

Tom Hanks in Early Talks to Play Geppetto in Disney's Live-Action 'Pinocchio'

'Paddington' filmmaker Paul King is attached to direct.
Pinocchio may have a new puppeteer.

Tom Hanks is in early talks to play Geppetto in Disney's live-action adaptation of its classic animation that Paul King, the filmmaker behind the excellent Paddington movies, is attached to direct.

The project is the next remake to go before cameras as part of the studio's successful strategy updating its beloved movies, which shows no signs of lagging interest. Last week The Lion King trailer became the second most-viewed trailer in history.

Weitz previously worked on the script.

Currently, there is a competing Pinocchio project in the works at Netflix, with Oscar winner Guillermo del Toro set to write and direct a stop-motion musical based on the Italian story by Carlo Collodi for the streamer.

Hanks, who is repped by CAA, recently wrapped production of Sony's Mr. Rogers biopic. He last starred in The Post and is also reprising the voice of toy cowboy Woody for next year's Toy Story 4.

One possible complication for any deal is Hank's next gig, the Amblin sci-fi project Bios. Bios is looking to shoot next year starting in February, which could conflict with Pinocchio's wished upon start, late May.

PS: secondo noi metteranno Jennifer Lawrence a fare la Fata dai Capelli Turchini...

Dal sito The Disinsider:

Director Paul King Will No Longer Helm Disney’s Live-Action ‘Pinocchio’

For those excited about Disney’s live-action Pinocchio remake. There is a bit of bad news. As the film has been delayed.

In a recent interview with Discussing Film, the films cinematographer Seamus McGarvey, has revealed that director Paul King (Paddington 2) walked away from the project due to “family reasons.” Disney is currently searching for a new director.

McGarvey also revealed the film is delayed, and will likely shoot sometime in June-July, and with a new director would possibly mean McGarvey would also be off the project, but that could change.

Just last month it was revealed that Tom Hanks (Toy Story franchise) was in talks to star in the project as the fatherly figure Geppetto.

Chris Weitz (Rogue One, Cinderella) wrote the script, and will be produced by his production company, Depth of Field, with Weitz and Andrew Miano producing.

Dal sito The Disinsider:

Disney’s Live-Action ‘Pinocchio’ To Get A Rewrite From ‘Harry Potter And The Cursed Child’ Playwright Jack Thorne, Shooting This Summer

It looks like Disney is going back to the drawing board with their live-action adaptation of their animated classic Pinocchio.

Harry Potter And The Cursed Child Playwright Jack Thorne has been brought on to rewrite the script for the film. Chris Weitz (Rogue One, Cinderella) wrote the first draft.

The studio is aiming to begin production in June in both the UK and Italy and is expected to shoot through September. The film will have a budget of over $150 million, Disney’s live-action remakes of Beauty and the Beast and The Jungle Book had similar budgets, so expect the House of Mouse to put Pinocchio on a grand scale visually.

In an interview with Discussing Film back in January, the film’s cinematographer Seamus McGarvey had revealed that director Paul King (Paddington 2) walked away from the project due to “family reasons.” Disney is currently searching for a new director. Tom Hanks (Toy Story franchise) was in talks to star in the project as the fatherly figure Geppetto, but it appears he may have left the project as well.

Robert Zemeckis in Talks to Direct Live-Action ‘Pinocchio’ for Disney (EXCLUSIVE)

Robert Zemeckis is in early talks to direct Disney’s live-action “Pinocchio.”

Andrew Miano and Chris Weitz will produce through their company Depth of Field with Weitz penning the script. “Paddington” director Paul King had originally been tapped to direct but had to leave the project for unknown reasons at the beginning of the year. David Heyman, who was on board to produce, is also no longer involved with the film.

Though a deal hasn’t closed yet, Zemeckis has been eyeing the project since this summer. He was still, however, working on his current pic “The Witches” for Warner Bros. and didn’t want to commit to a new film until “The Witches” made more progress in production. With that film in post-production now, Zemeckis began turning his sights on his next project, with “Pinocchio” high on his list.

The famous director will now look to gear up the casting process, specifically trying to find his Geppetto. At one point, Tom Hanks was circling the role, but eventually passed. Andrew Miano and Chris Weitz are producing. King, Weitz and Simon Farnaby wrote the most recent draft.

The original animated movie tells the tale about a living puppet who, with the help of a cricket as his conscience, must prove himself worthy to become a real boy.

Disney continues to see its live-action adaptation strategy as a major part of its pipeline, with this year’s “Aladdin” and “The Lion King” both crossing the billion dollar milestone this year.

In recent years, Zemeckis has been more focused on adult-centered dramas like “Flight,” “Allied” and “Welcome to Marwen,” and less interested in the tentpoles that made him famous early in his career. Zemeckis has started to come back around on those family-friendly films like “Back to the Future,” having just finished Warner Bros.’ adaptation of “The Witches” starring Anne Hathaway.

Miano and Weitz also recently produced the critically acclaimed drama “The Farewell.”

Zemeckis is repped by WME.
