Altra intervista ai produttori da Wired:

Why the next Guardians of the Galaxy adventure is animated

After bucking expectations and storming the global box office, 2014's Guardians of the Galaxy firmly established Marvel's cosmic band of scoundrels as the sci-fi heroes of a new generation. While the comic book adventures of the team are currently going in a very different direction -- with the X-Men's Kitty Pryde taking Peter Quill's place as Star-Lord and The Thing from the Fantastic Four joining the line-up -- the new animated series focuses on the team movie-goers came to love.

With the series about to premiere in the UK, WIRED speaks with the series' executive producers Stephen Wacker and Cort Lane on transitioning the characters to animation, balancing the movie and comic interpretations of the team, and how the series -- very technically -- features Batman.

WIRED: Stephen, you were an editor at Marvel Comics before moving over to animation, where Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning's revamp of the Guardians became a rapid inspiration for the movies and now animated series. What's it like seeing that explosion of popularity from both sides?
Stephen Wacker: It was really cool. I didn't work on those particular books but I did work with Dan and Andy at another company on another title called Legion of Super Heroes, another cosmic title. So I'm very familiar with their work. Then I edited the relaunch with Brian Bendis. But the team that Dan and Andy and their editor put together, they knew they had something special. It didn't hit with the audience right away; it took a little time and the movie announcement. They've always been terrific to work with. Wild imaginations, both of them. One of the last projects I took part in before leaving the publishing side was Guardians 3000, a kind of "Guardians of the future" that Dan wrote.

The movie is obviously the core inspiration for the series, but are you taking anything from the comics that the movie wasn't able or willing to delve in to?
Cort Lane: With the animated series, over the course of a season that's almost thirteen hours of living with these characters. So that's a chance to tell stories that dig into the characters a little more. We really get where these characters came from, what drives them, the sense of loss. I think that's something we have more time to do. We can pull in a lot of comics lore from that. Marty [Isenberg; supervising producer and series writer] keeps up pretty steadily with the comics.

SW: Yeah, and I think we have the opportunity here, over twenty episodes, to introduce a lot of Marvel Universe characters and places that the film just didn't have time for.

CL: We have a lot of fun. Cosmo [a telepathic Russian dog] is one of the characters that do a lot with. There's a villain called Titus from the Nova comics and he's really interesting -- he was a Nova Corps officer and, we get to see how he becomes a villain.

The pilot episode makes it clear that you've already got some comic book material that the movie ignored, like Star-Lord's Element Gun. What made you want to bring those elements in?
SW: We're calling it the Element Blaster now, and we wanted to make that a pull because it's been a part of the character for so many years. It's an important item through the series. We also hint at Quill having another object that holds one of the secrets of the universe and that is pulled from deep within the comics -- I don't want to say too much about it because I don't want to give anything away. But our story editors are always looking for stuff from those old '70s and '80s cosmic Marvel worlds that they can bring in.

Spoiler warning for readers, but the animated series almost immediately resurrects Ronan. Given that his defeat was the climax of the movie, did you worry you were invaliding that?

SW: Well, no. I think if we had ignored it, that would have invalidated it. But his whole death and his resurrection is a driving thread throughout the entire series, what that does to Nebula and particularly Gamora.

CL: This object Steve mentioned has the power to restore life and it's a very dangerous power. We demonstrate how dangerous it is, and how powerful it is, by having one of our other villains restore Ronan. And again this object is linked to Peter's origins, so it's a very important item. Ronan's revival is not something we did lightly. It's a very important step along the path of this cosmic story.

Marvel has other animated series running at present, such as Ultimate Spider-Man and Avengers Assemble. Are the Guardians that we're seeing in this show sharing that continuity?

SW: You can take this show on its own. The best of Marvel continuity is put together by fans at a later date. We just focus on this show on its own. There are some fans who could look at the Guardians showing up in Ultimate Spider-Man and say that maybe that's a version of the team two weeks from now. What's important for us is the team now and that now is spinning off from the movie. That doesn't mean we couldn't explore some shared continuity later on in the show now that this one is established.

How did you go about casting the voice roles for the show?

SW: I don't think there was ever any real chance of getting the movie cast. Our production schedule is for twenty-six episodes and that takes up a lot of time, and you really want to get professional voice actors.

CL: The cast have that animation versatility and they can play other characters, but mostly we wanted a cast who could come together and record as a group and develop that chemistry. And that required a lot of scheduling, so we really wanted voice actors to establish that ensemble.

And you have Will Friedle leading the cast -- comic fans will probably appreciate the irony of a former Batman now voicing Star-Lord.

SW: It is terrific and fun, and Will certainly has a lot of fun reminding us that he was Batman!

Da AskWacker:

Question
Are there any more prominent female characters in Guardians coming up in the next few episodes besides Gamora and Nebula?
Answer
Oh, yeah.

Question
Will the Kree Supreme Intelligence show up in Guardians of the Galaxy?
Answer
Unfortunately, yes.

Question
if you consider GOTG part of a "phase 2", do you have plans plans for a "phase 3"
Answer
Yes.

Da AskWacker:

Question
So will GotG get cancelled after 2 seasons like Agents of SMASH?
Answer
Your premise is incorrect. But i think you know that.

Question
Asgard War Part 1 was easily one of the best episodes of Guardians and stands among some of the best episodes in Marvel animated history (in my humble opinion). Or maybe I was just blown away when I watched it. Either way, I'm very excited for Part 2.
Answer
Me too. It only gets better from here.

Question
After watching Guardians of the Galaxy 'Asgard War', I can't wait to see more original and comic-adapted two-part (or three-part) events! Also, I really want to see Mister Knife in season two. A lot.
Answer
Glad you liked it. Thanks!

Question
I have two questions one will Angela make another appearance this season? The second question is does Tom Hanks die at the end of Saving Captain Rodgers?
Answer
1-Yes.
2-Tom Hanks lives forever!!

Question
I read in an interview that Eric Radomski said season two of Guardians would likely be standalone episodes rather than an overarching plot like season one. If that's the case, I hope a few more stories/characters appear in that season like the already revealed Avengers and High Evolutionary, plus Adam Warlock & Magus, Mister Knife, Annihilus, Kang and more.
Answer
Not sure of the quote you’re referring to, but wait and see!

Question
Mr Wacker. Guardians of the galaxy started okay and then turned into the best marvel animation show in a while. Top 5 animated marvel series of all time. I am just sad that the promotion of the series is very lacking, which is hurting the show ratings pretty bad. I hope you guys will do better promoting the show with interviews, making of's and more.
Answer
We’ve done lots of interviews, but there’s really no evidence that those kinds of things are the best way to reach the show’s intended audience.
Disney XD is pretty happy with the show’s performance (which is measured by more metrics than just the initial airing), so I think we’re doing okay.
More viewers are always welcome though, so tell your friends! Hell, tell your enemies too!

Question
In the first season or the next, will Star-Lord return to Earth along with the Guardians? And possibly meet the Avengers for the first time?
Answer
That would be telling.

Question
It's pretty cool how many recurring villains the Guardians have now including Thanos, Korath, Nebula, the Collector, Ronan, the Black Order, and Titus.
Answer
Thanks. We take our cues from the breathtaking work James Gunn and his crew did on movie, but we’ve also been able to add even more Marvel U. elements along the way. Marty and his writing team have had a blast digging into old cosmic comics…and there are even bigger surprises ahead on season 2.

Question
Will the Asgard War two-parter in Guardians share any similarities to the War of Kings storyline from the comics?
Answer
Not exactly, but if you like one you should like the other.

Question
Will there be future crossover episodes featuring the Web-Warriors, the Avengers and the Guardians, or at least two of which?
Answer
Yes.

Question
If Marvel Animation theoretically we're given the okay by Disney XD to make shorts, would they be 3-5 minute quick character shorts like the Guardians one or 12-16 minute story driven shorts like animated Marvel One-Shots?
Answer
No idea since it’s theoretical.

Question
Whenever Yondu appears in Guardians, he always seems like a menace that comes out of no where to bother the team. The only time he was important to the plot was the Star-Lord shorts and Road to Knowhere (the first episode). Will he ever have any important role in any of the other episodes he appears in?
Answer
Well I disagree with your premise, so “yes”!

Da AskWacker:

Question
Thomas Perkins, the lead character designer for Guardians of the Galaxy, rocks! He's a really cool guy. I was talking to him on Twitter. Hopefully he's designing some interesting characters for season two like Adam Warlock, Phyla-Vell, & Korvac.
Answer
Like 99% of the people a Marvel, Thomas is a cool guy (I remain unconvinced about Quesada).
I was unaware of his Twitter feed though, so thanks for the heads up!

Question
Hello Mr. Wacker. Will Mantis appear again?
Answer
Yes.

Da Newsrama:

Next up is Guardians of the Galaxy Season 2, featuring Captain Marvel and Adam Warlock.
The Guardians will meet the Avengers in this season, as well, Wacker said.
Wacker is about to reveal episode 1 of Guardians...
The episode of Guardians featured Peter Quill's team working with the Avengers to stop the High Evolutionary.
