Tom McCarthy
The "Win Win" and "The Visitor" filmmaker will work with producers Mark Ciardi and Gordon Gray of Mayhem Pictures and Joe Roth.

Walt Disney Pictures has set indie darling Tom McCarthy to write Million Dollar Arm, based on the inspirational story of how sports agent J.B. Bernstein discovered professional pitchers Rinku Singh and Dinesh Patel through his Indian reality show.

Mark Ciardi and Gordon Gray’s Mayhem Pictures are producing alongside Joe Roth.

Million Dollar Arm underscores a pledge by Disney chair Rich Ross and president of production Sean Bailey to round out their slate with smaller films, similar to past Disney titles Secretariat and The Rookie, also produced by Mayhem.

Last month, Bailey and Ross were on hand for the premiere of McCarthy’s poignant comedy Win Win at the Sundance Film Festival. Win Win, written and directed by McCarthy, also deals with athletics and unlikely stars.

Million Dollar Arm will be McCarthy’s next writing project. There’s no word yet on a director, or whether McCarthy is a possibility for the gig.

Bernstein got the idea for the reality show one night while watching a televised cricket game from India. He realized that the throwing motion employed in cricket wasn’t that different from American pro baseball.

Reality show Million Dollar Arm launched in India in 2008. More than 40,000 contestants auditioned, including Rinku Singh and Dinesh Patel, who emerged as the two finalists.

Bernstein brought Singh and Patel to the U.S., using action films and rap songs to facilitate their English. He also taught them the mechanics of baseball.

The efforts paid off. Patel and Singh became the first athletes from India to sign professional baseball contracts when joining the Pittsburgh Pirates.

In addition to Win Win, McCarthy’s writing/directing credits include The Station Agent and The Visitor. He also has a story credit on Pixar’s Up.

Disney reups Mayhem Pictures deal
Mark Ciardi, Gordon Gray branching out beyond sports
By MARC GRASER

Ciardi

Gray

Disney has reupped its first-look deal with Mayhem Pictures producers Mark Ciardi and Gordon Gray, the duo best known for feel-good sports films like "Secretariat," "Invincible," "Miracle" and "The Rookie."
Mayhem continues to develop sports pics, including an inspirational tale about Greek marathoner Stylianos "Stelios" Kyriakides, who competed in the 1936 Olympics; baseball project "Million Dollar Arm," and "McFarland," about a California high school track and field coach.

But the producers are also branching out into other genres with the Reese Witherspoon comedy "Wish List" and fantasy series "Fallen," based on the young adult book series by Lauren Kate, both for the Mouse House.

They also have the Chuck Russell-helmed actioner "Arabian Nights" in the works at FilmDistrict, and the Dwayne Johnson actioner thriller "Protection" with IM Global.

Mayhem also collaborated with Johnson on the CBS Films thriller "Faster" and comedies "The Tooth Fairy" for Fox and Disney's "The Game Plan."

Mayhem landed its deal at Disney in 2002, shortly after the success of "The Rookie." Their shingle had previously been housed at Revolution Studios, where they produced "The New Guy."

Da Deadline:

‘Mad Men’s Jon Hamm To Play Sports Deal Maker In Disney’s ‘Million Dollar Arm’
By MIKE FLEMING | Wednesday May 9, 2012 @ 8:15pm EDTTags: Dinesh, Disney, Jon Hamm, Million Dollar Arm, Rinku

EXCLUSIVE: Mad Men star Jon Hamm has become attached to play a sports agent in Million Dollar Arm, the drama based on the true story of how sports agent J.B. Bernstein discovered professional pitchers Rinku Singh and Dinesh Patel through a reality show he staged in India with cricket players. Mayhem Pictures’ Mark Ciardi and Gordon Gray are producing with Joe Roth and Palak Patel of Roth Films. Thomas McCarthy wrote the script and the plan is to shoot in the fall.

Bernstein repped top talent, but was burnt out and disillusioned until he watched the cricket game on late night TV and noticed how similar the game’s throwing motion was to that of baseball pitchers. He headed to India and wound up hatching the reality show Million Dollar Arm and auditioning 40,000 hopefuls. He brought back the two 19-year old finalists to the U.S., but it wasn’t as simple as signing with a ball club and heading to the minor leagues. Neither player had ever ventured beyond their rural village and Bernstein had to teach them as much about American culture and speaking English as he did the rules of baseball. All the work paid off when the imports became the first Indian players to sign pro baseball teams when they got contracts with the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Hamm, who’s repped by ICM and Forward Entertainment, most recently starred in and produced the Jennifer Westfeldt-directed Friends With Kids.

Craig Gillespie in Talks to Direct MILLION DOLLAR ARM Starring Jon Hamm
by Dave Trumbore Posted: October 19th, 2012 at 4:47 pm

Director Craig Gillespie (Lars and the Real Girl) is in negotiations to helm Million Dollar Arm, a sports drama for Disney that is based on real life events. Starring Jon Hamm (Mad Men) as sports agent J.B. Bernstein. Million Dollar Arm tells the story of how two Indian cricket players, Dinesh Patel and Rinku Singh became finalists Bernstein’s titular reality show and landed Major League contracts. Bernstein, burnt out from too many high-stress dealings with top-level talent, watched a cricket game on TV late one night and decided that the pitching motion was similar enough to baseball that there might just be a potential for some cross over. Where could a stunt like this possibly work? Why, with the Pittsburgh Pirates, of course! Hit the jump for more.

Variety reports that Gillespie is in talks to helm the pic, scripted by Tom McCarthy (Win, Win). Other directorial credits on Gillespie’s resume include 2007′s Mr. Woodcock, the television series United States of Tara and 2011′s Fright Night remake. Disney’s Million Dollar Arm will ultimately dramatize the rags-to-riches story with Hamm’s Bernstein having to teach the 19-year-old prospects as much about American culture and the English language as he did the rules of baseball. What they’ll probably leave out is that Patel was eventually cut by the Pirates in 2010 and Singh still languishes in the minor leagues.

Golden Globe-winner Hamm, meanwhile, was recently seen on AMC’s fifth season of Mad Men and will star opposite Daniel Radcliffe (Harry Potter series) in A Young Doctor’s Notebook. He’ll also be seen in the Larry David comedy, Clear History.

Finalmente notizie su un film NUOVO! Ea giudicare dal successo della scorsa settimana 42, direi che i film sportivi sono tornati in auge al box office.

Alan Arkin Joins ‘Million Dollar Arm’ (EXCLUSIVE)
Thesp will portray retired baseball scout

Dave McNary

Alan Arkin has come on board Disney’s baseball drama “Million Dollar Arm” opposite Jon Hamm.

Mayhem Pictures and Roth Films are producing. Production begins next month in Mumbai with shooting also taking place in Atlanta.

“Lars and the Real Girl” helmer Craig Gillespie is directing from a script by Tom McCarthy (“Win Win”). Hamm will portray a real-life sports agent who discovered professional pitchers Rinku Singh and Dinesh Patel through a reality show he staged in India with cricket players.

The agent, J.B. Bernstein, noted how similar the game’s throwing motion was to that of baseball pitchers and created the reality show “Million Dollar Arm” to audition 40,000 cricket players.

Arkin will play a retired baseball scout. He’s currently seen in “The Incredible Burt Wonderstone,” recently wrapped boxing comedy “Grudge Match” and was up for an Oscar in “Argo” earlier this year.

Arkin is repped by ICM Partners and manager Estelle Lasher.

Disney's Million Dollar Arm Begins Production
Source: Walt Disney Pictures
May 30, 2013
0 1

Principal photography has begun on Walt Disney Pictures Million Dollar Arm, starring Jon Hamm. Directed by Craig Gillespie (Lars and the Real Girl, Fright Night), the film is produced by Mark Ciardi and Gordon Gray, through their Mayhem Pictures, and Joe Roth, under his Roth Films banner, with Palak Patel and Kevin Halloran serving as executive producers. Tom McCarthy (Win Win, The Visitor) wrote the screenplay. The film also stars Bill Paxton, Lake Bell, Suraj Sharma, Aasif Mandvi, Madhur Mittal, Pitobash and Academy Award–winner Alan Arkin. A.R. Rahman (127 Hours, Slumdog Millionaire) is scoring the film. Million Dollar Arm will shoot on locations in India, Georgia and Los Angeles.

Based on a true story, Disney's Million Dollar Arm follows JB Bernstein, a once-successful sports agent who now finds himself edged out by bigger, slicker competitors. He and his partner Aash (Aasif Mandvi) will have to close their business down for good if JB doesn’t come up with something fast. Late one night, while watching cricket being played in India on TV, JB comes up with an idea so radical it just might work. Why not go to there and find the next baseball pitching sensation? Setting off for Mumbai with nothing but a gifted but cantankerous scout (Alan Arkin) in tow, JB stages a televised, nationwide competition called “Million Dollar Arm” where 40,000 hopefuls compete before two 18-year-old finalists, Rinku and Dinesh (Suraj Sharma, Madhur Mittal), emerge as winners. JB brings them back to the United States to train with legendary pitching coach Tom House (Bill Paxton). The goal: get the boys signed to a major league team.

Not only is the game itself difficult to master, but life in the U.S. with a committed bachelor makes things even more complicated—for all of them. While Rinku and Dinesh learn the finer points of baseball and American culture, they in turn teach JB the true meaning of teamwork and commitment. Ultimately, what began as a purely commercial venture becomes something more and leads JB to find the one thing he was never looking for at all—a family.

The producing team of Mark Ciardi and Gordon Gray, producers of such notable sports movies as Secretariat, Miracle and The Rookie, joins forces with veteran producer Joe Roth (Oz The Great and Powerful, Snow White and the Huntsman, Alice in Wonderland) to bring Disney's Million Dollar Arm to the screen.

Disney Dates Jon Hamm Sports Pic ‘Million Dollar Arm’ For May 2014
By THE DEADLINE TEAM | Monday August 19, 2013 @ 9:22am PDTTags: Disney, Jon Hamm, Million Dollar Arm

Jon Hamm, Bill Paxton, Life Of Pi‘s Suraj Sharma and Asiv Mandvi star in Million Dollar Arm, which is being directed by Craig Gillespie and written by Tom McCarthy. Disney said today it will be released wide May 16, 2014. It is based on the true story of sports agent JB Bernstein (Hamm) and his partner (Mandvi) who are facing shutting down their office until JB gets a brainstorm: Million Dollar Arm, an American Idol-like reality show designed to find the first major league baseball player from cricket-crazy India.
