'Wicked' To Cast Movie Spell For Universal: Creators Meeting With Hollywood Directors

COMMENTS 109EMAIL THIS | PRINT THIS |
EXCLUSIVE: The smash hit stage musical Wicked is taking its first formative steps toward the movie screen. I'm told the musical's producer Marc Platt, book writer Winnie Holzman, and songwriter Stephen Schwartz have begun meeting with filmmakers. Insiders confirm that JJ Abrams, James Mangold, Ryan Murphy, and Rob Marshall are among the directors who've met or otherwise thrown their hat in the ring. More meetings will take place when the musical's authors come to town in the fall. The film will be made at Universal, which produced the stage musical with Platt.

After the billion dollar gross of Alice In Wonderland, studios are combing their fairy tale books for classics. It's crowded on the Oz front --Disney attached Sam Raimi to The Great and Powerful Oz, and Warner Bros has more than one film in development. But the $2 billion in global stage grosses for Wicked put it in league with Mamma Mia!, the long-running stage musical whose movie transfer grossed over $600 million worldwide for Universal.

Wicked, a Wizard of Oz prequel, is based on the Gregory Maguire novel Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West and focuses on the early relationship between Glinda the Good and Elphaba, a green-skinned beauty before she ended up flying on a broomstick. Wicked began as a movie development project with Platt and Universal, before they changed course and took it to the stage first. It was an immediate sensation, quickly recouping its $14 million capitalization in 2004 and becoming one of the biggest grossing tuners of all time, with the Broadway show and eight touring companies. The Broadway musical routinely tops the weekly gross charts--$1.4 million per week is average, but the musical has broken the $2 million mark more than once. The musical shows no signs of winding down, the reason its architects haven't been in a rush to mount a movie -- until now.

As for the directors on the list, Abrams is an intriguing choice despite never having done a musical (he's composed themes for several of his series' creations). Knight and Day director Mangold is also a musical newcomer, though he directed the Johnny Cash biopic Walk the Line. Murphy has put himself on the musical map with Glee, on which he's not only exec producer but executive music producer. Marshall has the lengthiest musical resume having directed and choreographed Annie and the Oscar-winning Chicago. But he is coming off the misfire Nine, a film that had Platt among its producers.

The movie can't come soon enough for Universal, which has several musicals in the works. The studio is trying to mount a Mamma Mia! sequel, is eye-ing a new version of Billy Elliot based on the successful stage musical (Universal is one of its producers). The studio is also working on a movie transfer of Lin-Manuel Miranda's In the Heights, recently hiring Kenny Ortega aboard as director and choreographer. Ortega directed the High School Musical trilogy and the Michael Jackson docu This Is It.

A me è piaciuto tantissimo!

Wicked: l'adattamento cinematografico arriverà a Natale 2019

The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West.

Alleluja!!! Forse finalmente ci siamo.

‘WICKED’ Interested In Lili Reinhart and Dove Cameron For Glinda The Good Witch

Earlier this week we got some exciting news that Wicked director Stephen Daldry was looking at Imelda Staunton for the role of Madame Morrible. There still has been no confirmation that any talks have happened or if an offer has been made. I will add that a recent Production Weekly listing does back up our report that Imelda is a person of interest. Their listing also indicates filming is expected to being in January 2021 in London, New York and Los Angeles. With the current pandemic though all production dates should be taken with a grain of salt. The film was already pushed from its 2021 release date so a 2022 release date would be most likely.

Some more exciting news that we have heard but I cannot verify further so also take this news with a grain of salt is that casting is ramping up. We have been told from a reliable source but again this is just a rumor for now, producers are interested in Dove Cameron and Lili Reinhart for the role of Galinda/Glinda the Good Witch. Lili is currently attached to the hit CW series, Riverdale and Dove is known for her role as Mal in the Descendants film series. Dove has been fancast and rumored for the movie for some time but our source hears that she is a legitimate contender for a role in the movie.

In Wicked Glinda is more snobby and mean unlike in the Wizard of Oz movie where she is portrayed in a more gentle and caring light. Glinda initially hates Elphaba (Wicked Witch) but grows to like her and they become friends. Wicked has been a hit Broadway show and theater production for years and fans have been clamoring for an adapted film version.

Altra battuta d'arresto.

Da The Hollywood Reporter

Stephen Daldry Exits 'Wicked' Movie as Director

The movie musical was set for a Dec. 22, 2021, release but was moved off of the Universal calendar during the pandemic.
The movie musical adaptation of Wicked is looking to take flight, but director Stephen Daldry won't be along for the ride.

A source tells THR that Daldry, who has long been attached to the movie, had to exit the project after the production timeline was adjusted and he was unable to commit to the new schedule. The exit was amicable and a search is underway for a new director.

Based on the Stephen Schwarz musical, the film is an alternative telling of the 1939 film The Wizard of Oz and L. Frank Baum's classic 1900 story of the same name, told from the perspective of the witches. Screenwriter Winnie Holsman and composer Schwarz are adapting the musical for the screen. Marc Platt is producing.

Wicked was set for a Dec. 22, 2021, release but was moved off of the Universal calendar following the COVID-19 theatrical and production shutdown. The movie has yet to receive another release date.

Ce la faranno i nostri eroi??

Da Deadline

‘Wicked’: Jon M. Chu Tapped To Direct Universal’s Film Adaptation

EXCLUSIVE: After adapting Lin Manuel-Miranda’s In the Heights for Warner Bros, Jon M. Chu has his sights set on adapting one of Broadway’s biggest hits. Sources tell Deadline that Chu will direct Universal’s Wicked, the feature-film adaptation of the record-breaking musical phenomenon that is in its 17th smash-hit year on Broadway.

The three-time Tony Award-winning stage musical was adapted from Gregory Maguire’s bestselling novel by book writer Winnie Holzman and composer-lyricist Stephen Schwartz, who are also collaborating on the screenplay adaptation. Marc Platt will produce for his Universal-based Marc Platt Productions. Wicked is produced on Broadway by Universal Stage Productions, Platt, the Araca Group, Jon B. Platt and David Stone.

Timing is everything and in this situation it worked out nicely for both parties. Last fall, Billy Elliot director Stephen Daldry left the project after the studio was looking to move fast on the long-awaited adaptation. Around the same time, Chu had to part ways with Disney+’s new Willow series he was planning to direct due to issues with Covid-19 that kept pushing production. On top of that, Chu is expecting a baby. With Chu’s schedule open and Wicked looking for a director, the timing worked out for both sides.

With a national tour and multiple international productions, the stage musical has been seen by over 60 million people worldwide, making it one of the most successful theatrical ventures of all time. The winner of over 100 international awards including Grammys and three Tony Awards, Wicked has been performed in over 100 cities in 16 countries around the world (U.S., Canada, the UK, Ireland, Japan, Germany, Holland, Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, South Korea, The Philippines, Mexico, Brazil, Switzerland, and China) and has been translated into six languages: Japanese, German, Dutch, Spanish, Korean and Portuguese.

Senior EVP Production Erik Baiers and director of development Lexi Barta will oversee the project on behalf of Universal .

Besides adapting In the Heights, which will premiere in theaters and on HBO Max later this year, Chu directed the box office smash Crazy Rich Asians for Warner Bros. Chu is repped by UTA, Artists First Inc and Goodman, Genow, Schenkman, Smelkinson & Christopher, LLP.
