‘Aladdin 3’ Reportedly In Early Development At Disney

It appears Walt Disney Pictures is looking to expand its live-action Aladdin franchise. According to insider Daniel Richtman, Aladdin 3 is already in development as well as a Genie spinoff.

In February, it was announced that the studio had begun work on Aladdin 2, given the success of the first film. The project was fast-tracked with John Gatnis (Flight) and Andrea Berloff (Straight Outta Compton) set to pen the screenplay. Additionally, producers Dan Lin and Jonathan Eirich are also returning to produce.

It seems rather early for Disney to be considering a third film in the franchise however, given Aladdin grossed over $1 billion, this could be reason enough. Currently, there is no word on the film’s creative team, but depending on the success of Aladdin 2, the studio will likely try to convince Guy Ritchie to return.

In addition to Aladdin 3, Disney is reportedly developing a Genie spinoff. There is no word on what this film would look like, but perhaps it could serve as an origin story for Will Smith’s Genie.

This is yet another sign of Disney’s faith in their slate of live-action adaptations. Not only are they developing a sequel to Aladdin, but it was recently revealed Mulan 2 is in the works. The studio has also begun development on films such as Hercules, Tarzan, and Atlantis: The Lost Empire.
