MARVEL UNIVERSE To Debut On Disney XD April 1st

Marvel has announced that a new programming block will begin airing on Disney XD this April, which will center on Marvel-themed pieces including the Ultimate Spider-Man animated series and the return of Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes.

Marvel has announced that a new programming block called Marvel Universe will be launched on Disney XD April 1st, later this year. Among the programs that will be aired are Ultimate Spider-Man (which will make its series premiere in April) and Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes (which will be returning for its second season). The Marvel website describes the program as the ultimate place for fans to find exclusive Marvel content, including animated shorts and live action interstitials. Below are the details in full...

Disney XD will launch Marvel Universe, a dedicated Marvel programming block, with the new series "Ultimate Spider-Man" as its centerpiece, on Sunday, April 1, it was announced today by Gary Marsh, President and Chief Creative Officer, Disney Channels Worldwide at the Television Critics Association Press Tour in Pasadena, California. News:

La Marvel sarà presente al Festival SXSW ScreenBurn che si terrà il giorno 11 marzo a Austin in Texas e presenterà i nuovi progetti animati e un rivoluzionario modo di leggere i fumetti.

Da ComicBookResource:

Marvel Heads to SXSW

Marvel makes its South by Southwest debut during the festival's SXSW ScreenBurn, promising previews of upcoming animated projects and a look at the publisher's "revolutionary new ways to read comics."

Official Press Release

This Spring, Marvel Entertainment takes Austin, Texas by storm in its inaugural appearance at the South By Southwest Interactive Festival with the Marvel: Digital House of Ideas panel at SXSW ScreenBurn! In this historic event on Sunday, March 11 at 1pm on the IGN stage at the Palmer Events Center, Axel Alonso (Marvel Comics Editor in Chief), Jeph Loeb (Head of Marvel Television) and Peter Phillips (SVP & GM, Marvel Digital Media Group) unveil Marvel’s bold new multimedia plans that includes the premiere of Marvel's revolutionary new ways to read comics. Not only does this mark the first major appearance by a comic book publisher in SXSW history, but Marvel is coming armed with the big news—and exclusive animation footage—that can’t be missed by any fan in attendance! Best of all, this event is free and open to the public, so everyone can be on hand to see Marvel’s newest innovations.

“Marvel’s always been the industry leader in graphic fiction & digital media and with the announcements we’ve planned, we couldn’t have picked a more appropriate show than SXSW,” said Dan Buckley. Publisher & President of the Print, Animation & Digital Divisions, Marvel Worldwide, Inc. “We’re big believers that both print and digital can work hand-in-hand to bring more readers to comics than ever before—and if you’re at SXSW Interactive you’ll be the first to see just how we’re going to do that.”

Since the launch of Marvel Digital Comics Unlimited in 2007, the first major digital comics program in comics history, Marvel has been on the forefront of digital comics publishing with innovations such as the landmark Marvel Comics app in 2010. Since then, Marvel has expanded its digital comics offerings to numerous platforms, while also becoming the first comics company to offer free digital copies with select print issues and comic shop coupons with the purchase of a digital comic.

"We are very excited to have Marvel on board for the ScreenBurn portion of the 2012 SXSW Interactive Festival,” said Hugh Forrest, Director of SXSW Interactive. “The presence of this industry leader is another indicator of the growth and maturation of the event. Marvel's addition to the SXSW lineup will add even more flavor to the mix of creative energy that fills Austin in March."

After the Marvel: Digital House of Ideas panel concludes, fans in attendance will receive a limited edition lithograph (while supplies last) and a chance to have it signed by Alonso & Loeb in a special Marvel signing session.

“Marvel’s fans are the best in the world—bar none—and I’m excited to meet more of them at SXSW” said Alonso. “We have exciting new plans that you’ll see implemented with the release of Avengers VS X-Men #1 that’ll take the biggest comics event in history and make it even bigger!”

Stay tuned to www.marvel.com and www.sxswscreenburn.com for more details on the Marvel: Digital House of Ideas panel and Marvel’s plans for SXSW.

News:

Si parla dell'Agente Coulsonal cinema, in televisione e nei fumetti.

Da CBM e da Newsrama:

Marvel Execs On Agent Coulson's Place In The Cinematic, Television And Comic Universes

Marvel Studios Creative Manager of Research and Development Will Corona Pilgrim and Head of Television Jeph Loeb discuss Agent Coulson's place in the cinematic and television universes as well as an update from the publisher as to whether he'll debut in the comics.

"Coulson has always been the official/unofficial face of Marvel Cinematic Universe’s S.H.I.E.L.D.," said Marvel Studios Creative Manager of Research and Development Will Corona Pilgrim in a recent interview with Newsarama about Clark Gregg's Agent Coulson. As fans know, S.H.I.E.L.D. has been a major character in the films as they clandestinely monitor the workings of various super powers; and while Nick Fury is the one in charge, Coulson is definitely the one in the trenches. After seeing such a positive reaction to the character in the first Iron Man movie, we never had a problem finding excuses to include Coulson. Like Nick Fury, the characters both expanded into the bigger Avengers picture as each film moved forward."

Having become such a popular part of the cinematic universe, Agent Coulson (voiced by Clark Gregg) was soon announced as a part of the upcoming Ultimate Spider-Man animated series. Jeph Loeb, Head of Television for Marvel revealed: "Nick Fury will play a major role in ultimate Spider-Man having an effect on Peter and Spidey’s life. But we wanted to have someone who could interact with Spidey on more regular basis -- Fury is a pretty busy guy -- so Coulson became our more day-to-day connection with S.H.I.E.L.D."

"Marvel TV properties in general will exist within the Marvel Universe in comics. That’s the continuity we watch," Loeb added, putting to rest any speculation that the series will be connected to The Avengers movie in any way. "There’s nothing in the Marvel Cinematic Universe that goes against the publishing Marvel Universe, so we’d pretty much follow in that way." Disappointingly, the site also reached out to Marvel's comic book division and they "declined to comment" when asked if Coulson will make a proper debut in that particular universe.

Avengers vs X-Men sarà il più grande evento di marketing mai fatto della Marvel che coinvolgerà vari media: fumetti, social network, radio e televisione.

Da CBM:

COMICS: Avengers vs X-Men Is MARVEL's Biggest Marketing Push Ever

MARVEL's next big event is reported to be the biggest marketing investment they have ever made, utilizing various forms of media.

Avengers vs. X-Men has rolled out plenty of images of various heroes engaging in battle, but it appears this is just the tip of the marketing iceberg. Marvel Senior VP, David Gabriel, spoke with ICV2 about what the company's plans are.

This is the biggest marketing investment that we’ve ever put into a series or an event. You’ll see that online, through social media, and there’s going to be a radio and television component as well.

There was no specifics about how Marvel will use television to promote the event, but it was stated that Marvel sister companies ABC and Disney XD were among the channels being tossed around.

The marketing campaign will run the entire length of the twelve issue series.

They’re actually treating every issue as an event, because there’s a different fight going on in every issue, and I’m told that they are pushing every single issue through all twelve issues. The story itself has three acts, and each of those acts has a natural marketing hook to it, so they’re pushing those as well. We’re making a concentrated effort like never before to get whatever we can out there.

News sui fumetti di Avengers - i più potenti eroi della Terra e di Ultimate SpiderMan.

Da Newsrama:

New All-Ages Comic Line Tied to MARVEL Animation (Updated)

Update, 2/18: The ties between Marvel's new all-ages line and their current animated series are now even clearer, with the publisher announcing on Friday the name for the new imprint: "Marvel Universe," the same branding as the Disney XD programming block launching on April 1.

Additionally, Marvel has released the covers for The Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes Adventures #1 and Ultimate Spider-Man Adventures #1 with complete trade dress, displaying a feature called "Fury Files."

"The Marvel Universe line of comics not only clearly lets fans know they’re in for great stories, but also lets parents know where to find great stories to share with their kids," said Marvel editor-in-chief Axel Alonso in the company's press release.

Original story: Supporters of all-ages comic books were concerned when Marvel's March 2012 solicitations arrived this past December, and with them brought news that Super Heroes #24 and Spider-Man #24 were the last issues of both series, and with that, the end of the kid-friendly "Marvel Adventures" line.

Those concerned didn't need to be for too long, as April brings the first issues of two new all-ages series from Marvel: The Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes Adventures and Ultimate Spider-Man Adventures. Both are new stories set in the world of Marvel TV's Disney XD animated series (Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes and Ultimate Spider-Man, as you've probably already surmised), and feature involvement from folks directly involved with the shows, including head Earth's Mightiest Heroes writer Chris Yost and the Man of Action team (Joe Casey, Joe Kelly, Steven Seagle and Duncan Rouleau) on Ultimate Spider-Man Adventures.

Amazing Spider-Man writer Dan Slott and all-ages comic veteran Ty Templeton (Batman Adventures) are also contributing to the first issue of Ultimate Spider-Man Adventures, with art from Nuno Plati. Adam Dekraker is illustrating The Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes Adventures.

Newsarama talked via email with two Marvel editors working on the new books, Stephen Wacker and Tom Brennan, about the importance of "all-ages" titles in Marvel's publishing line, how closely the comics will resemble the shows, and using digital comics to reach new readers.

Newsarama: It could reasonably be argued that Marvel puts out a good deal of titles that are, at the least, acceptable for say, a 12 year old. (I'm not a parent, so my judgment might be skewed). So given that, why is it important for Marvel to have comic books that are explicitly labeled as "all ages"?

Stephen Wacker: I think what’s important is having as many venues as possible for our characters and stories to reach an audience that has more options than ever on how to spend their time. It’s the same thinking behind every sub-line we have from MAX to the Marvel literary adaptations we do.

To me, The "all-ages" aspect of the line isn’t the most intriguing part since most of the books I work on I would have enjoyed at any age (except Moon Knight which my mother says I can only read when I turn 40.). I am much more excited about being a bridge for anyone who walks away from the new Spidey and Avengers shows anxious for more.

As I see it, the “all-ages” tag we use is really a guideline for parents and retailers. While out greater Marvel U has long-spanning stories filled with lots of payoffs for long time readers that draw you in to our greater continuity, these will be more contained stories focused on action.

Tom Brennan: When you look at the last few years of Marvel Publishing, the stories have been heralded – rightly so — for the innovative way they’ve addressed adult themes. So I’d agree with you, Albert, most of the line is appropriate for younger audiences, but the messaging hasn’t always been clear. With this line we have the freedom to say, “This is your jumping on point for the Marvel Universe.”

Nrama: In the past, some all-ages books have struggled in sales, at least in the direct market. Given that, what is this initiative looking to do differently?

Wacker: We’ll be tying into the animated series (Ultimate Spider-Man and The Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes) for one, which will serve a different set of readers entirely.

Honestly though the expectations for this line are very different from our main Marvel U books.

Over the past few years, the many talented people associated with the all-ages books have brought hundreds of thousands of new readers to Marvel through channels our direct market customers don’t see: From school and public libraries, to international magazines, to all sorts of custom publishing initiatives.

With our main line of comics having grown so interconnected — since that’s the fanbase’s expectation and what readers seem to want — it’s important that we’re able to create stories that can stand completely on their own.

Nrama: One thing that stands out from the initial announcement is the high-profile creators involved. Was it important to get people like Chris Yost and the Man of Action crew — who are not only big names in comics, but involved in the respective TV shows — to prove that the comics aren't simply rote tie-ins? (Also, given how busy Dan Slott has been with Amazing Spider-Man twice a month, how has he found time to contribute to Ultimate Spider-Man Adventures?)

Wacker: Dan was easy because he’s grown used to doing what I tell him. Though I did have to promise that his Spider-Man/Human Torch cohort Ty Templeton could draw the story... (Gee, twist my arm why don’t ya!)

Yost and The Man of Action Crew are contributing to these books because, well, they want to. We’re very fortunate to have Chris and M.O.A. team working with us given their roles as writers for EMH and USM respectively. Getting them on board for the launch was crucial to setting the tone and making sure our books reflect the TV shows right out of the gate. So it made my life easier... which is every editor’s goal.

Brennan: Getting a little more into your question, we’re constantly hearing from high-profile creators that they’d love to do more all-ages work — it’s just been a matter of scheduling. As these books continue, you’ll be seeing a mix of familiar faces and new voices sharing the writing duties.

Nrama: How close will the books be "on model" to the shows?

Wacker: As close as we can get while still giving out artists a chance to show off their stuff. But these comics are meant to fit in with the style of the show.

Nrama: Is there a chance that we might see things in the comics before the shows? Say, could the Serpent Squad show up in The Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes series even though they haven't been in the cartoon yet?

Wacker: There is a chance. Yost in particular is looking to hint at some upcoming events on Earth’s Mightiest Heroes.

Nrama: The press release mentions Agent Coulson in the Earth's Mightiest Heroes series, and it's already been revealed that Coulson plays a major role in the Ultimate Spider-Man TV show. This is a bit of a leap, but is there a loose degree of interconnectivity between the two comics?

Wacker: Not really. The shows stand alone, though they do share characters.

Brennan: It’s crucial that both of these books be jumping-on points for any audience, so we have no plans to connect these two books. Coulson’s become a fan favorite, and in his story in EMH #1, we needed a character to introduce this world of Avengers to the readers. Coulson seemed like the perfect fit.

Nrama: Since reaching an all-ages audience obviously involves reaching out to new readers, what's the plan for making these books stand out on shelves? Will there be a heavy newsstand presence for the titles? On the same note, given that there are surely kids out there much more likely to read on an iPad than a paper comic, can we expect to see a digital push for these new series?

Wacker: Speaking generally, I simply don’t believe newsstands are where you reach the most kids anymore. We do have a lot of exciting digital stuff planned though... particularly with the Marvel app and at marvelkids.com. That’s our new newsstand... that’s where you grab new people, particularly now that the app is on Android and iOS.

Nrama: To wrap up, there is bit of a public debate between "all-ages comics" and "kids' comics," with the former being something desirable and pan-generational and the latter being something to avoid, seen as talking down to the audience. How do you view the distinction between the two? In your minds, what's the target audience for these new books?

Brennan: I couldn’t speak much to that debate as I’ve never really been a part of it, but I do know that a good story well told is, on some level, universally understood.

Good writers are good writers, be they writing a murder mystery or a children’s book. If you write a good story, ideally any audience will enjoy it. The target audience for these books is all ages. It’s got sophisticated and accessible action, adventure and excitement that every audience will love.

Wacker: See why I like Tom so much?

I don’t have a ton of faith in adults debating what kids really want because it usually just becomes what the adults want... just couched in intellectual terms. It reminds of the scene in Big when the executives are all sitting around talking about what kids want out of toys... until 13-year-old-brained Tom Hanks shows them all up. My target audience is people who like Spider-Man and the Avengers and viewers who love the new shows.

To your point, I believe readers of our superhero comics of any age want exciting, heart-stopping, emotional stories about people using their gifts to do the right thing. That’s what new need to deliver each month.

Oh, and also Hulk fighting the Thing.

When the Marvel Universe block on Disney XD kicks off on April 1, Spidey will have some help battling those bad guys in the form of a teenage Danny Rand, better known to comic fans as Iron Fist.

Says the show's producer Duncan Rouleau..

"The 'Ultimate Spider-Man' version Iron Fist is definitely a Danny, and not a Daniel, Rand. Unlike some other super heroes on his team, he isn't given to big mouthy boasts or wild displays of teenage angst. Danny embraces a go-with-the-flow attitude. Stepping out from the confines of K'un L'un into the madhouse of New York, Danny tends to look at everything with a wide-eyed sense of the new that offers a unique perspective vs. his more jaded fellow trainees. But don't be fooled, beneath that kick-back demeanor is the most deadly kick in the world...and, of course, an iron fist."

He also say that despite thsi version being a teenager, they have very much been influenced by Ed Brubaker and Matt Fraction's acclaimed run on Immortal Iron Fist. What do you think? Will Rand make a good addition to the show?

L'eroina di Ultimate SpiderMan sarà White Tiger.

Da Marvel.com:

Spider-Man & His Ultimate Friends: White Tiger

The new White Tiger leaps into action in 'Ultimate Spider-Man'!

Fans may not be familiar with the new White Tiger just yet, but that will change once she joins your Friendly Neighborhood Wallcrawler in “Ultimate Spider-Man,” beginning April 1!

The young super heroine will join Spidey, Iron Fist, and two more heroes as part of a special team-in-training that will form Peter Parker’s core supporting cast in his new animated adventure. But who is the White Tiger, and what brings her to this team of S.H.I.E.L.D. trainees?

“As a legacy heroine and the newest in a family of heroes to use the White Tiger name, Ava feels she has a lot to prove to S.H.I.E.L.D., to her teammates, and to herself,” divulges “Ultimate Spider-Man” Creative Consultant Paul Dini. “It's important to her that she excels at everything she does, as she plans on leaving the team someday as a full super heroine in her own right. She was Fury's fair haired girl until Spider-Man showed up, and she wants to show the newbie that despite his rep as a solo hero, he still has a long way to go toward earning her respect.”

“She’s really into S.H.I.E.L.D.,” elaborates Supervising Producer Cort Lane. “She would love to be the next Black Widow. She enjoys the S.H.I.E.L.D. training, and she thinks the Helicarrier’s the coolest thing in the world.”

The White Tiger doesn’t have a large history in the comics, but while she’s never typically been associated with the Webhead that freshness brought a new and interesting dynamic to the series.

“We wanted a young female voice on the team and while she is new, White Tiger proved to be the perfect choice,” explains Dini. “She's tough and smart, and her cat-like reflexes allow her to match Spider-Man leap for leap in agility. Also, Spidey's wisecracking attitude really rubs the more serious Tiger, a.k.a. Ava Ayala, the wrong way, which gives us a lot of character conflict when they are trying to solve a bigger problem. It's fun to make sparks fly when you're writing for two contentious teammates.”

And while Lane finds there’s “less pressure in keeping continuity for her” given her relatively shorter history in the comics, he promises viewers “will find over time that her origin is closely connected to the original White Tiger and is linked to the Marvel Universe in really interesting ways.”

“We were free to experiment with her powers, her history and her look until we came up with a character that fit the unique tone of our show,” echoes Dini. “That said, White Tiger is very much a heroine in the classic Marvel mode, and while she is new, there's something about her that seems very right in Spider-Man's universe. Cool powers, defiant attitude, compelling backstory, it's like she's been there all along.”

While Iron Fist, revealed yesterday as a member of Spider-Man’s super heroic supporting cast, provides a more calming influence on the group, White Tiger brings her own unique temperament to the mix.

“Like her namesake, White Tiger is tough, proud, and when the chips are down, will fight to the very end,” says Dini. “She's in there fighting it out side by side with the boys, or throwing them around if they get in her way. She's as smart as she is strong, and while brainwork comes easily to Peter Parker/Spider-Man, White Tiger is more focused and a much better student. You also get the idea that Ava has to work harder to keep the savage Tiger side of her nature in check. Without discipline, she could be one claw pop away from becoming Wolverine. That's why she is a bit of a control freak and a girl who pushes herself to be better than her teammates.”

Nuovi dettagli su Luke Cage da ultimate SpiderMan.

Da CBM:

New Look & Details For Luke Cage In ULTIMATE SPIDER-MAN Show

Marvel has unveiled some new info surrounding the role of Luke Cage in the upcoming Disney XD TV series, including his relationship with Iron Fist and how the teenage version will be different from the more well known incarnation.
PaulRom - 3/1/2012

Lately, Marvel has been revealing some characters that will be heavily featured in Ultimate Spider-Man (a new Disney XD animated series that will focus on Spidey training to be a true superhero), and the latest character that has been revealed is none other than Luke Cage. Cage, like many other heroes joining Spider-Man, is depicted as a teenager in this series. In addition to an official first-look photo, check out some words from writer/producer Brian Michael Bendis and Marvel TV Head Jeph Loeb:

“...but it is fun to write him as a teenager, and I do sort of write him with the knowledge of the man he’s going to become", says writer Brian Michael Bendis. "That’s kind of the way I wrote the Peter Parker in ULTIMATE SPIDER-MAN [the comic series] for many years. You’re writing the teenager who you know will one day become the Peter Parker we know and love. This is the Luke that will eventually become Luke Cage.”

“He’s a little more carefree,” adds Head of Marvel Television Jeph Loeb. “While he’s got street smarts, he doesn’t have the same troubled past as the adult Luke has.”

Despite the changes, Bendis and Loeb ensure that this incarnation is essentially the same character that we've known before. “What we like about the ‘Ultimate Spider-Man’ Luke Cage is that he’s still instilled with his fierce sense of loyalty and family,” comments Loeb. “It’s an important theme to the new series and Luke embodies that well.”

Concerning the companionship between Luke Cage and Iron Fist, “If there’s anything not broken in comics, it’s the dynamic between Iron Fist and Power Man,” elaborates Bendis. “They’re like the Laverne and Shirley of comics. They’re the Odd Couple. They’re fantastic together. And that dynamic only gets more interesting with the connection of the other three teammates. No matter what happens on the team, these two are good.”

“They are best of friends--much like in the comics--but as teenagers we can see the less-than-responsible side of these heroes as well,” promises Loeb.

Ecco come sarà Nova in Ultimate SpiderMan.

Da CBM:

First Look at the new Nova in the Ultimate Spiderman" cartoon

Another ally of Spiderman has been added in the new cartoon. Check out how this character will look like and who he is.

In the new show “Ultimate Spider-Man”, Nova will appear as one of Spiderman's friend.

“Nova is an enormously popular character,” notes Head of Marvel Television Jeph Loeb. “When the decision in publishing was for Rich Rider to sacrifice himself [at the climax of THE THANOS IMPERATIVE] we wanted to respect that. We all know that there are other members of the Nova Corp and this is the story of one such member --Sam Alexander.”

“He’s very much like Peter Parker was at the beginning of Spidey’s career--he’s got a lot to prove,” remarks Loeb. “The difference is that Sam comes with a full blown attitude—which, as we may suspect, might be covering up some insecurities.”

“He’s very funny--often at his own expense,” says Loeb. “Nova sees himself as a natural leader. Unfortunately, he’s the only one who sees himself that way. While he and Spidey are often at odds, we’ll see that friendship grow as the series goes on.”

“He has very different voice than the rest of the cast,” reveals Loeb. “He doesn’t quite know the limitations of his powers, so while there’s an irreverence that’s great fun, he’s also got a lot to learn.”

“We’re huge Nova fans as well, so rest assured Nova will be front and center with the heavy-duty action. There’s no task he’s not willing to get into and that bravery--even at personal risk--will put him in harm’s way more often than not. He loves playing the hero, so look for Nova to be the breakout star of the series!"

"Ultimate Spider-Man" will premiere alongside with "The Avengers: Earths Mightiest Heroes" on April 1st on Disney XD

Intervista a Duncan Rouleau dei Man of Action.

Da Marvel:

Meet the Men of Action: Duncan Rouleau

Marvel.com begins a series of chats with Man of Action Studios, the creators behind 'Ultimate Spider-Man'!

Collectively known as Man of Action Studios, the team of Duncan Rouleau, Steven T. Seagle, Joe Kelly and Joe Casey serving as Supervising Producers on “Ultimate Spider-Man” have worked together in the world of animation for years, creating such shows as “Ben 10” and “Generator Rex.”

But beyond their work in animation, each member of the creative quartet has a long history in the world of comics. With the premiere of “Ultimate Spider-Man” only a few short weeks away on April 1, Marvel.com will chat with each member of the group on their past work, the transition from comics to animation, and what it’s been like chronicling Spidey’s new animated adventures.

Besides his work as a writer and Supervising Producer on “Ultimate Spider-Man,” Rouleau has worked as an artist on a number of Marvel heroes—and anti-heroes—including runs on Alpha Flight, Venom, X-Factor and more. Now he makes his return to the Marvel Universe helping to bring your Friendly Neighborhood Wallcrawler to animated life.

Marvel.com: While the majority of your work in comics has been as an artist, early on you helped co-plot Alpha Flight with Steven Seagle and have written a number of things on your own since then. How do you think your skill sets as an artist have helped inform your writing, both for comics and animation?

Duncan Rouleau: Having a “visual eye” does not exclusively belong to an artist, but the day-to-day practice of taking a written idea and translating it into a visual representation allows me a no-nonsense approach on how things can be best realized, especially [when] constructing massive super hero tales that require loads of action and fight choreography.

But truly, the greatest advantage being an artist in comics allowed me the opportunity to work with many great writers and see firsthand their storytelling process—some of whom are now members of Man of Action.

Marvel.com: Before “Ultimate Spider-Man,” I don’t believe you had the opportunity to work on the Wallcrawler much—what have you enjoyed most about writing him so far?

Duncan Rouleau: I love working on this show! The entire process from breaking stories in the writer’s room to seeing the finished product has been so much fun. I think the show reflects that.

There are many untapped aspects of Spidey’s character that appear in the comics that have not been seen in the in any of the animated versions --yet. The use of quick cutaways and a rich inner fantasy life have allowed us to explore Spidey’s famous irreverent humor and humanity in a way that hasn’t ever been visualized in a super hero show before. For me, helping establish this new way of telling a Spidey story has been the most entertaining and challenging [aspect].

Marvel.com: What are some of your personal favorite Spidey stories? What about favorite writers or artists who have worked on the webhead?

Duncan Rouleau: No real surprises here. There have been many classic runs and I am a fan of every one of them. I first ran into Spidey somewhere in the mid-70s and have been following his exploits since. I do have a sweet spot for the early [Steve] Ditko/[Stan] Lee books, but if I was cornered I’d have to say AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #121 through #180 are some of my favorites.

Marvel.com: When you set out to write something, do you already have a clear visual of what’s going to happen beforehand?

Duncan Rouleau: A good story always springs out from an idea--a “hook”--that first draws you in. That hook could be an image, a character moment or even a question. Once you have that, and it’s one you are excited by, the story can follow pretty quickly.

From a practical writing method, when constructing a script--especially for animation--it’s always best to have the ending in mind before you start the plot. However, in many cases, I have made discoveries along the way that change the ending I had originally planned for…but those usually come out of the discovery of a new and better hook.

Marvel.com: What are some of the biggest differences in your mind between working in comics and animation?

Duncan Rouleau: That’s a really interesting question. However, I think the answer differs from project to project. The big challenge on doing “Ultimate Spider-Man” was actually taking specific storytelling elements found in comics--the thought balloon, the omniscient narrator, genre splicing, etc.—and embracing them and finding an animated equivalent. This approach has really opened up the floodgates for me.

Without going too deeply into the storytelling techniques, we took a lead from the ULTIMATE SPIDER-MAN comics. And hopefully, by embracing the spirit found in those pages, we’ve managed to imbue that energy into the Ultimate Marvel Comic animated show. I really can’t wait to see what people think of what we did. We’re very proud of it.

Marvel.com: How has your work in comics influenced your work in animation, and vice versa?

Duncan Rouleau: I find animation to have a very precise approach to storytelling. It might be because it is directly influenced by budgets and production schedules, but there is no wasted line of art, no wasted motion--it forces you to vet and analyze every aspect to create the maximum effect. Comics, for me, have provided an exploratory experience. Probably because there is a smaller crew and less technical layers involved, but I find the chance for personal discovery to be open wide working on a book.

In the end, each has their challenges, but both are invaluable. I guess you could say one encourages my craftsmanship while the other my artistry. Together, hopefully, they have made me a better storyteller.
