Dal sito CBR:

How Loki's Finale Could Set Up the MCU's Secret Wars

The debut of a new cosmic threat in the Loki finale could lead to the MCU's version of the multiverse-colliding Secret Wars.

WARNING: The following contains spoilers for the Season 1 finale of Loki, "For All Time. Always.," streaming now on Disney+.

Marvel Cinematic Universe fans caught their first glimpse of Kang the Conqueror -- or at least his variant, He Who Remains -- in Loki's Season 1 finale. Actor Jonathan Majors, previously announced to play the time-traveling villain in Ant-Man & The Wasp: Quantumania, warns Loki and Sylvie that, if he dies, someone more evil will inevitably take his place. Loki discovers that to be true when he's dispatched to the Time Variance Authority, only to find the enormous statue of the Time-Keepers replaced by one of Kang. With the multiverse now in chaos, this seems like the perfect way to set up MCU's version of Secret Wars.

What Is Secret Wars?

There are two completely different versions of this famous comic storyline, one in 1984 and the other in 2015. The 2015 version, written by Jonathan Hickman and illustrated by Esad Ribic, centers around the multiverse, which would dovetail nicely with the MCU's direction.

In Secret Wars 2015, several of the Marvel comics universes and alternate timelines collide into a single realm called Battleworld, which run by Doctor Doom. Two versions of Reed Richards (from the main, or 616, Marvel Universe, and the Ultimate Universe) lead a revolution of heroes from across the multiverse against Doom and ultimately win, resulting in the establishment of new Earth. The crossover event was viewed largely as a soft reboot of Marvel Comics continuity.

As Doctor Doom has yet to be introduced into the MCU, it would make sense for an all-powerful multiverse villain such as Kang to take his place as the ruler of Battleworld. That also fits Kang's motives; He Who Remains tell Loki and Sylvie about the Multiversal War, in which his variants battled for supremacy.

Kang was not involved in 2015's Secret Wars, but after the 1984 storyline, formally titled Marvel Super Heroes Secret Wars, he began to eliminate alternate versions of himself, who had formed into the Council of Kangs. If the multiverse is to be central to the MCU's Phase Four plans -- in Spider-Man: No Way Home, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, for starters -- then Kang's renewed fight against his variants might logically bring him to a similar position as that of Doom in 2015's Secret Wars.

The development of MCU Phase Four has brought a number of unexpected casting choices, from Natalie Portman returning to play Jane Foster's Thor in Thor: Love & Thunder to Alfred Molina and Jamie Foxx being cast once more as Doctor Octopus and Electro in Spider-Man: No Way Home. While little is known about the two films, Loki's finale may have provided an explanation for the castings. The audience has already seen multiple Lokis onscreen, so it would make sense to introduce, for instance, a Jane Foster from a universe in which she is Thor (much like Sylvie is a variant of Loki). The finale also seemingly ties into What If...?, as the trailer shows different iterations of characters from alternate realities interacting with one another.

With the multiverse soon to devolve into madness, the MCU seems to be heading toward a Secret Wars-like event with Kang's introduction, although it will most likely not follow the exact premise of the comics, as was the case of Civil War. Kang the Conqueror is expected to play a major role in the MCU, and his comics counterpart is certainly a Thanos-level threat.

Jim Shooter Says Marvel Is Developing a Live-Action Secret Wars

Secret Wars writer Jim Shooter reveals Marvel Studios approached him to secure the rights to Secret Wars for a live-action adaptation.

Jim Shooter, who was the writer of Marvel's original Secret Wars event, says Marvel Studios is developing a live-action adaptation of the project.

The creator was a recent guest at the Megacon convention, where he was asked about the possibility of Secret Wars heading to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. While discussing how a "money clown" called him to offer $10,000 to write a novelization of Secret Wars, Shooter revealed Marvel Studios attempted to secure the rights to the storyline.

"This one clown called me from Marvel," Shooter said. "He wasn't an editor, but some executive of property management which was a little odd. He asked me if I wanted to write a novelization of Secret Wars." Shooter then claims he was sent a retroactive work-for-hire contract, which he ended up turning down. A follow-up call then came from a David Bogart, who wanted to apologize for the previous phone call.

The new retroactive offer was for $10,000, though Shooter initially declined since he was fully aware his previous contract was a work-for-hire. Shooter then stated Marvel didn't have a piece of paper that said the company owned Beyonder, Titania, Spider-Woman, Spider-Man's black symbiote costume or any other Secret Wars characters. He added that Marvel didn't have to retroactively pay him to use the characters, though Bogart insisted he "take the money dummy," which he ended up doing.

"This means you're making a movie, right?" Shooter asked. "I'm not allowed to tell you that," Bogart reportedly replied. Shooter followed that up with, "Well, I think you just did."

Secret Wars is one of the heavily-rumored future projects to land in the MCU following Avengers: Endgame, the conclusion of the "Infinity Saga" featuring 23 movies and three phases. The "Infinity Saga" centered on the introduction of the Infinity Stones and Thanos' mission to retrieve them. It was also the swan song for Robert Downey, Jr.'s Iron Man and Scarlett Johansson's Black Widow, who both died in Endgame.

The next MCU film due for a release is Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, Secret Wars has been adapted a few different times in the comics by Marvel, most recently in 2015. The epic event featured the multiverse, which factored heavily into the conclusion of Loki on Disney+. Multiversal mayhem is also on deck for Spider-Man: No Way Home and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.

Marvel Studios' Kevin Feige Reveals Details on MCU's Next Big Saga Coming Soon

Kevin Feige of Marvel Studios says Phase 4 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe is nearly at an end, but the next saga is just beginning. After concluding the Infinity Saga — the 23 films spanning 2008's Iron Man, culminating in 2019's Avengers: Endgame and Spider-Man: Far From Home — the Multiverse has opened. With the MCU sprawling across both theaters and television screens in such universe-expanding series as Disney+'s Loki, unleashing multiversal mischief in Spider-Man: No Way Home and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, Feige teases the upcoming Phase 5: the rumored Secret Wars Saga.

"As we're nearing the end of Phase 4, I think people will start to see where this next saga is going," Feige told Total Film. "I think there have been many clues already, that are at least apparent to me, of where this whole saga is going."

The teased endgame is Secret Wars, inspired by the 2015 comic book crossover of the same name, where a multiversal war and cosmic events called incursions threaten the destruction of entire universes. Marvel has hinted at the direction of this next phase with the arrival of He Who Remains (Loki's Jonathan Majors, who will return as the timelord Kang the Conqueror in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania), and the looming perils of incursions in Doctor Strange 2.

Feige teased, "We'll be a little more direct about that in the coming months, to set a plan, so audiences who want to see the bigger picture can see a tiny, tiny, tiny bit more of the roadmap."

Marvel Studios will have a presence at San Diego Comic-Con 2022 but is expected to hold off on major announcements until D23 Expo, Disney's bi-annual convention confirmed to showcase new titles from Marvel and Lucasfilm during its Hall D23 presentation on September 10.

Marvel Studios' upcoming slate includes Thor: Love and Thunder (in theaters July 8), She-Hulk: Attorney at Law (streaming August 17 on Disney+), an untitled Marvel Halloween Special (fall 2022 on Disney+), the Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special (winter 2022 on Disney+), and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever (in theaters November 11). New episodes of Ms. Marvel are streaming Wednesdays on Disney+.

‘Avengers: Secret Wars’ Lands ‘Doctor Strange 2’ Screenwriter Michael Waldron

Marvel Studios is one step closer to “Secret Wars.” The company has tapped “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness” screenwriter Michael Waldron to write the script for 2025’s “Avengers: Secret Wars,” the climactic final film in the Multiverse Saga.

Waldron has been instrumental in crafting the multiverse within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He created and served as head writer on the 2021 Disney+ series “Loki,” in which the single, sacred Marvel timeline was ultimately fractured into a multiplicity of alternative realities. In “Doctor Strange 2,” Stephen Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) encounters several new dimensions, and in the film’s mid-credits scene, he meets Clea (Charlize Theron), a sorcerer from the Dark Dimension who tells Strange that his multiverse-hopping adventures have caused an “incursion.”

That word was an immediate dog whistle to fans of the 2015 “Secret Wars” storyline in the Marvel comics. In the series, the main Marvel universe and the Ultimate Marvel universe collide in an incursion, causing both to collapse and form a brand new reality called Battleworld, a dystopian nightmare filled with several alternate versions of many Marvel characters. If the “Secret Wars” comes anywhere close to that storyline, it follows that Marvel would task Waldron with cleaning up the narrative mischief he helped create with “Loki” and “Doctor Strange 2.”

Prior to his work with Marvel, Waldron was a writer on “Rick & Morty” and “Community,” and he created the 2021 Starz pro-wrestling drama “Heels.” He’s also been hired by Lucasfilm to work with Marvel Studios chief Kevin Feige on a possible “Star Wars” movie. In May, Waldron told Variety that he was “writing away” on the script for that film. “I’m enjoying having the freedom on that to do something that’s not necessarily a sequel or anything,” he said. “It just doesn’t have a bunch of TV shows and movies that you’re servicing on top of it, the way I did with ‘Doctor Strange.'”

With “Secret Wars,” the opposite is true: Waldron will be tying together at least 37 titles in film and streaming within the Multiverse Saga.

Deadline first broke the news.

What If...? Season 2 (primi mesi del 2023)
Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania (17 febbraio 2023)
Secret Invasion (primavera 2023)
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 (5 maggio 2023)
Echo (primavera 2023)
The Marvels (28 luglio 2023)
Loki 2 (estate 2023)
X-Men '97 (autunno 2023)
Ironheart (seconda parte del 2023)
Agatha: Coven of Chaos (seconda parte del 2023)
Daredevil: Born Again (2024)
Captain America: New World Order (3 maggio 2024)
Thunderbolts (26 luglio 2024)
Spider-Man: Freshman Year (2024)
Blade (6 settembre 2024)
Marvel Zombies (2024)
Deadpool 3 (8 novembre 2024)
Fantastic Four (14 febbraio 2025)
Avengers: The Kang Dynasty (2 maggio 2025)
Film Marvel senza titolo (25 luglio 2025)
Film Marvel senza titolo (7 novembre 2025)
Film Marvel senza titolo (13 febbraio 2026)
Avengers: Secret Wars (1 maggio 2026)
Film Marvel senza titolo (24 luglio 2026)
Film Marvel senza titolo (6 novembre 2026)
