Il progetto di revival della serie animata X-Men degli anni '90 prodotta dalla Saban ha ottenuto il via libera ed è stato ufficialmente annunciato.
Si tratta di un sequel della celeberrima serie tv.
E' intitolato X-Men '97.
L'anno '97 fa riferimento al fatto che la nuova serie di cartoni animati sarà il diretto seguito della serie anni '90 terminata nel 1996, quindi gli episodi saranno ambientati nel 1997

Ripercorriamo le notizie sul progetto.

Dal sito The Hollywood Reporter:

Here's a small scoop: the cast of the '90s X-Men: The Animated Series will be reuniting at Los Angeles Comic Con on Oct. 12. It will be the first time actors Cal Dodd (Wolverine), Lenore Zann (Rogue), George Buza (Beast) Chris Potter (Gambit) and Chris Britton (Mr. Sinister) will have appeared together on stage since the end of the fondly-remembered Saturday morning cartoon.

But that's not all: the creative team behind X-Men tells us they are planning on approaching Disney with a pitch for an onscreen continuation of the series, perhaps a season of TV that'd keep the aesthetic of the show. "The one thing we'd like to do more than anything else is to continue where we left off," longtime X-Men artist Larry Houston says.

X-Men: The Animated Series Producer Confirms Revival Talks With Disney

The creative team behind X-Men: The Animated Series has "made conversation" with Disney about reuniting the cast of the beloved '90s animated series for a limited revival that could premiere on Disney+, series producer and director Larry Houston confirms in a new interview. Airing 76 episodes across five seasons between 1992 and 1997, the acclaimed and highly-rated Saturday morning cartoon was embraced by audiences both old and new when it was made available for streaming on the Disney+ platform in November. There have been "rumors galore" about a decades-later X-Men sequel, according to Wolverine actor Cal Dodd, but "nothing is coming to fruition" despite Houston's attempts at a continuation.

"We've had talks, but that's about it," Houston said Friday during a virtual Wizard World panel. "We've made conversation and it's up to them to make the decision, but we've let them know that we're all available for whatever they want to do in the future."

The "semi-retired" Houston describes X-Men as the one series he would come out of retirement for "if we could do a special, a one-off episode, or a five-part episode."

"Whatever they wanted to do if we had all the original team," he continued. "That's what I would come out of retirement for."

Added cast member George Buza, who voiced the bespectacled and blue-furred Beast for the duration of the series, "We would all love to do it." Co-star Chris Britton, the voice behind villain Mr. Sinister, said a dozen new half-hour episodes "would be fabulous."

"And it would cost them absolutely nothing. Kind of like what they pay now," Dodd added. "Lovely series, though. It's nice to be able to get talent like that for that amount of money."

Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter in June 2019, Houston said the attempted revival would "continue where we left off" with the same aesthetic and tone that made X-Men: The Animated Series a pioneer in animated superhero television.

The original series brought together Wolverine, Beast, Cyclops (Norm Spencer), Storm (Iona Morris and Alison Sealy-Smith), Jean Grey (Catherine Disher), Rogue (Lenore Zann), Gambit (Chris Potter and Tony Daniels), and Jubilee (Alyson Court) as a team of mutants assembled by Professor Charles Xavier (Cedric Smith), who led the superheroes in protecting a world that hates and fears them.

EXCLUSIVE: AN X-MEN ANIMATED SERIES BEGINS PRODUCTION IN 2023

If you have been following myself or GWW closely you may already have a inclination of what this news maybe. I hinted at it in our previous article discussing an upcoming Thunderbolts project and also threw out some teases on a recent appearance of our Change My Mind podcast. But sense Disney Plus day is tomorrow and I don’t want to miss out on revealing this info here it is.

Sources close to GWW and within Marvel Studios have informed us Marvel Studios is currently developing an X-Men Animated Series for Disney Plus that is set to begin production in 2023. Now I know during the Change My Mind podcast I indicated I was trying to get more details on this series as it could end up being something new, something old or something borrowed and the fact is, after talking to literally everyone I know, sources and journalists included I couldn’t get any info beyond, an X-Men Animated series is in development and will start production in 2023.

The reason I wanted to find more hard lined details on the project is because it sounds like it could go in 3 directions. Either this is a brand new series in which Feige and co can begin to planet the X-Men seeds that will spread throughout the MCU, or this is a reboot of the original 90’s X-Men animated show in which some pieces of that puzzle will return and be involved, or its a straight revival of the 90s show and it will continue where they left off.

Personally, I think its something new, Feige appears to be a huge X-Men fan and it seems like he would want to personally usher Marvel’s Mutants into the MCU. The only thing that makes me step back and ask “Could this be a revival/reboot” is in August of 2021, 90’s X-Men The Animated Series, producer Larry Houston, confirmed during a panel at Wizard World that they had pitched an X-Men Animated Series reboot to Marvel Studios in 2019.

Here is what Houston said during an interview in 2019

“The one thing we’d like to do more than anything else is to continue where we left off,”

And again Houston discuss the prospect during a Wizard World Panel in 2020

“We’ve had talks, but that’s about it. We’ve made conversation and it’s up to them to make the decision, but we’ve let them know that we’re all available for whatever they want to do in the future.”

Houston also indicated this is a project he would come out of retirement for.

“Whatever they wanted to do if we had all the original team, whether the project was for a one-off special or a five-part limited series. “That’s what I would come out of retirement for.”

So, Larry’s comments certainly make you think don’t they, it does sound like the original animated X-Men team has had discussions with Marvel about a potential return but unfortunately no confirmation and for now all we do know is an X-Men animated project is indeed on the horizon and will start production in 2023.

EXCLUSIVE: Cast Announcement for 'X-MEN '97' Coming to Disney+

Exclusive interview with Marvel Studios' Brad Winderbaum and Dana Vasquez-Eberhardt on the return of the iconic 'X-Men: The Animated Series'!

The animated series that made the X-Men a household name will continue in Marvel Studios’ X-Men ‘97, coming exclusively to Disney+ in 2023!

A new generation, and fans of the original decade-defining cartoon, will enjoy this all-new animated series that revisits the iconic era and cast of characters from 1992’s X-Men: The Animated Series. In X-Men ’97 viewers can expect a return to this classic period in X-Men history, with many of the same cast members from its original run!

This Week in Marvel, with hosts Lorraine Cink and Ryan Penagos, spoke to Brad Winderbaum, Head of Streaming, Television, and Animation at Marvel Studios, and Dana Vasquez-Eberhardt, VP of Animation at Marvel Studios, on what it took to bring X-Men ‘97 into reality.

“This is the first X-Men title produced by Marvel Studios,” emphasizes Winderbaum. “What an amazing first step to reintroduce audiences to the X-Men with a look at one of the most pinnacle eras of the X-Men comics, which was the ‘90s. That iconic style that has its roots in Chris Claremont, and is celebrated in Jim Lee, and then again in ‘The Animated Series.’”

“Over the years, as we’ve met with so many filmmakers who have come in to pitch on various projects, the touchstone that we hear over and over again is X-Men: The Animated Series,” says Winderbaum.

Following a familiar team with the “DNA of the original show,” an impactful event in X-Men ‘97 will launch the reunited X-Men into an all-new chapter that will resonate with fans of the original series.

Featuring the voice talents of original X-Men: The Animated Series cast members including Cal Dodd, Lenore Zann, George Buza, Alison Sealy-Smith, Chris Potter, Catherine Disher, Adrian Hough, and Christopher Britton, some cast members of X-Men ‘97 will reprise their original roles, with others voicing entirely brand-new parts.

X-Men '97 will also welcome a number of new voices to the cast, including Jennifer Hale, Anniwaa Buachie, Ray Chase, Matthew Waterson, JP Karliak, Holly Chou, Jeff Bennett, and AJ LoCascio.

“As an animated show, the original X-Men was the forerunner to some amazing action series,” says Vasquez-Eberhardt. “Everyone that is making X-Men ’97, top-down, is a fan. On this project, instinctually, we knew exactly what this is. To bring this series forward and pick up that baton, and not just keep running at the same pace, but to really elevate. That’s the responsibility.”

The head writer and executive producer on X-Men ’97 is Beau DeMayo. Supervising director is Jake Castorena and supervising producer is Charley Feldman. Also consulting on the new series are X-Men: The Animated Series producers and showrunners Eric and Julia Lewald, plus original series director Larry Houston.
