WDAS takes a year break before starting back again on 2016 with Byron Howard's (sans Greno who was attached before his own project) "Zootopia" staring a very foxy Jason Bateman.

Fresh Details Of New Disney Toons – Zootopia, Giants, Moara And More

Just last week I was speaking to Peter Del Vecho, producer of Disney’s upcoming Frozen, and I tried to test out some rumours on him. Like word association, I thought. I’d say the word and…

…well, he’d just say “no comment” or something like that.

One of the words I tested was Zootopia. That’s the title of an upcoming Disney movie from Tangled co-director Byron Howard and featuring Jason Bateman as, it would seem, the voice of the lead character, apparently a Fox.

Del Vecho was giving me nothing. He’d obviously heard this word before and knew very well what it meant, but there was no verbal acknowledgment to be had.

Today, that same word popped up in a report at Blue Sky Disney. Zootopia. Just one new title in a report that spells out what we can expect from the next few years of Walt Disney Feature Animation.

On a film-by-film basis, here’s what they revealed:
◾Zootopia in 2016. Was originally being directed by Howard and his Tangled collaborator Nathan Greno until…
◾Giants, also in 2016. A fairy tale story from Greno that will “show you how much his influence on Tangled truly was.”
◾Moara, possibly in 2018. Likely to be the first Disney feature to use a hybrid CG-hand drawn style, and currently being developed by Ron Clements and John Musker.
◾Then an as-yet unconfirmed, still in flux film about a “teenage space race,” from Tick Tock Tale director Dean Wellins.

We’ve spoken about Moara before, just not by name. Last time I called it:

something “fresh and original, not a fairytale movie,” apparently has a setting somewhere in the south pacific and a Tiki carving as a character. Will it tie into the Enchanted Tiki Room theme park attraction? Uuuhhh… probably not.

One of the strongest visual influences on the film is the work of Paul Gauguin, which is certainly very promising.

All in all, this seems like a pretty varied bunch of films, being made by a talented roster of filmmakers. Wellins’ film in particular is sounding like a fresh prospect, but there’s nothing here that seems stale.

My interview with Del Vecho will be on site later in the summer. He wasn’t giving up too much about the future, but he certainly had a lot of interesting things to say about Frozen.

Decisamente in senso letterale.

A fast-talking fox is framed for a crime he didn’t commit in Walt Disney Animation Studios’ “Zootopia” (working title)—in theaters in 2016.

Director Byron Howard and writer Jared Bush shared plans for the upcoming comedy adventure Zootopia. In the animal city of Zootopia, a fast-talking fox who’s trying to make it big goes on the run when he’s framed for a crime he didn’t commit. Zootopia’s top cop, a self-righteous rabbit, is hot on his tail, but when both become targets of a conspiracy, they’re forced to team up and discover even natural enemies can become best friends.

Imagine a modern city, lived in and designed by wild animals.

The origins of Zootopia go back to Disney’s 1973 animated Robin Hood, featuring a host of creatures great and small, acting out the roles in that classic story. When Tangled director Byron Howard proposed a new animated film populated entirely by anthropomorphic animals, he said Lasseter “lifted me in the air like a baby Simba,” from The Lion King.

We’ve seen animals in the natural word and animals in the human world, “but we’ve never seen animals in a modern world designed by animals.” The plot is a buddy movie about a smooth fox named Nick Wilde and a rabbit cop named Lt. Judy Hops (no voice talent was announced for the 2016 title).

Howard and writer Jared Bush did share how various wildlife experts helped shape the characters. They showed concept art of a studious-looking wildebeest in a three-piece suit with glasses, but were warned that those animals are “impossibly stupid,” Bush said. So that character changed into a dopey, slack-jawed yokel named Gnu-pid.

They also displayed concept images of Zootopia’s title city. “One of the key concepts is if you squint at any frame of film you might think you’re looking at an animal in a natural environment,” Howard said.

He then showed a frame of a snow-covered Alpine mountain, which faded into an irregularly shaped white pyramid luxury hotel.
Just like New York has Chinatown and Little Italy, Zootopia has distinct regional neighborhoods like Tundratown, Sahara Square, Little Rodenta (the bad part of town, populated by vermin), and Burrowborough, populated by millions of bunnies.

They also showcased one more character: Gazelle, a creature named after her own species, who is an outspoken mega pop star — depicted in various outrageous outfits a la Lady Gaga.

And the major metropolitan newspaper in town? The Wall Street Gerbil. Obviously.

Da BadTaste:

Zootopia
