'Ms. Marvel' Series in the Works for Disney+ (Exclusive)

The show will center on Marvel's first Muslim superhero to star in her own comic book title.

With Captain Marvel flying high on the big screen, Marvel Studios is now focusing on its other marvelous heroine, Ms. Marvel.

Marvel is developing a live-action series for Disney+, its upcoming streaming service, based on its acclaimed comic Ms. Marvel, hiring British writer Bisha K. Ali to write and act as showrunner. Ali is a comedian who is currently a staff writer on Hulu’s remake of Four Weddings and a Funeral.

The show may be announced during Friday’s Disney+ presentation. Marvel had no comment.

Ms. Marvel as a comic and heroine has existed since 1976, with the character Carol Danvers using the name for her crime-fighting escapades. Several other characters have briefly taken up the mantle, and Danvers herself became Captain Marvel in 2012.

The latest incarnation, and the one the show will be focusing on, is a teenager named Kamela Khan. Khan broke ground by becoming Marvel’s first Muslim character to lead her own comics title. Her identity as a Pakistani-American living in a religious family in New Jersey whilst trying to find her own way has been a major focus of the stories. Her powers have been described as polymorphous, meaning she has the ability to stretch and change her shape.

The comic has appeared on numerous year-end top 10 lists and won a Hugo Award for best graphic story in 2015.

No timetable has been set for the show, and it's unclear whether the show will fit into the larger Marvel Cinematic Universe. Marvel is developing several other shows for the streamer that will be tied to the MCU. These include The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, to debut in late 2020; WandaVision, to debut in spring 2021; Loki, also for early 2021; and Hawkeye, for late 2021.

Ali is repped by CAA and Del Shaw.

Disney+’s ‘Ms. Marvel’ Shooting Details Revealed

Yesterday’s Super Bowl offered our first looks at The Falcon and the Winter Solider, Wandavision, and Loki. However, there are still more series’ yet to come. The Illuminerdi has just reported that Ms. Marvel is looking to start production in August of this year, despite previous reports suggesting April.

The series will be apart of the second wave of Marvel shows coming to Disney+. It will appear next to Moon Knight and She-Hulk, which have all started pre-production.

No casting announcements have been made, but they should all be announced by this summer.

Hulu’s Four Weddings and a Funeral writer, Brisha K. Ali has signed on to be the series’ writer and showrunner.

“Ms. Marvel as a comic and heroine has existed since 1976, with the character Carol Danvers using the name for her crime-fighting escapades. Several other characters have briefly taken up the mantle, and Danvers herself became Captain Marvel in 2012.”

The series will focus on the shape-shifting Pakistani-American teenager Kamala Khan from New Jersey; however, there is no report yet of when the series will premiere. Hopefully, this leads to her own standalone film, or possibly appearance in the Captain Marvel sequel.

Dal sito Murphy's Multiverse:

WHAT I HEARD THIS WEEK: MS. MARVEL AUDITIONS

Every now and then I come across some information the veracity of which can be confirmed by a second source. What happens FAR more often is that I come across some information that while believable and from trustworthy sources, cannot be confirmed by other sources for various reasons. Typically, when the second scenario occurs, I move on and forget about the information unless, in rare instances, it turns out to be proven true somewhere down the road. The news about Peyton Reed working on Season 2 of The Mandalorian came from an article just like this, but I’ve also heard some pretty wild stuff of which we have no proof, like Doom showing up in Black Panther II. Over the past week, we’ve seen unions give guidelines for safely returning to work, plans start to come together for projects to resume filming and an increase in the number of actor/actresses who are signing on to new projects as the film industry attempts to get the big wheel spinning once again.

It’s been mostly quiet on the Marvel Studios front, however, as we still don’t have any definite timeline for when they will finish production on The Falcon and The Winter Soldier (though yesterday did bring some good news on that front), Loki or Shang-Chi and The Legend of the Ten Rings. And while we heard that Spider-Man 3 is aiming to start up in late-September or early-October, we still don’t know when other projects which missed their intended start dates, such as Ms. Marvel and Doctor Strange: In the Multiverse of Madness, will get the green light. However, there is another glimmer of hope that was shared with me and that I’m happy to share with you now…

What I heard this week: after shutting the process down due to the pandemic, casting has resumed for the role of Kamala Khan, aka Ms. Marvel! The casting process for this one has been wild and taken a long and winding road but I was told that actresses were recently being called back in to continue the auditioning process. The casting of Kamala Khan is certainly one that is of great interest to many (my Twitter DMs are proof as they are filled with questions about when and who and if) and one that Marvel Studios is clearly taking great care to get right.

The timing of the resumption of the process is also of note. As the state of Georgia begins to open back up and film and TV production gets rolling again in and around Atlanta, where Ms. Marvel is slated to film, it’s possible that an imminent casting could lead to cameras rolling on the Disney Plus streaming series before the end of Summer! This is one to keep an eye on over the next several weeks. Should Marvel Studios land the actress for the role, a casting announcement via the trades would be major news and lift the spirits of fans who have had little good news the past few months.

Dal sito The Direct:

Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah Set to Direct Ms. Marvel Disney+ Show (Exclusive)

Marvel Studios is quickly gaining speed in preparation for its brand new era of storytelling on Disney+, where the team is set to start premiering as many as eight new mini-series for Phase 4. Even though these are TV shows as opposed to full length movies, Kevin Feige and his team are adamant about their small-screen characters getting the same level of love and effort as their big-screen counterparts.

The studio is already well on its way filming and starting pre-production for the earliest of these projects. Being nearly finished on both WandaVision and The Falcon and The Winter Soldier; they are also in the process of looking for the best talent to helm projects that don’t start their work until later down the road. One more of those ranks has just been filled for a brand new character’s mini-series, and we have exclusive information on details pertaining to who will direct it.

NEWS

The Direct can exclusively report that Marvel Studios has hired Bad Boys For Life director duo Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah to direct at least one episode of Ms. Marvel for Disney+. It's currently unknown how many episodes they will helm, though we can confirm that these episodes are being developed for a one-hour format.

Production for Ms. Marvel is set to begin this Fall and run until Spring of next year.

WHAT THIS MEANS

This is an absolutely huge win for Marvel Studios as they work to get Kamala Khan's solo series up and running. The studio has also reportedly been in the final stages of the casting process for the lead character, along with a few important core cast members, for which a final decision may not be so far off now that directors are on-board the series.

El Arbi and Fallah not only have some fantastic films on their short resume already, they have also been linked to the comic book world going back a few months. The two had previously confirmed that they had been in discussions with both Marvel Studios and DC for potential projects to direct, and Ms. Marvel seems like it will be a great fit given the duo's Muslim background

Ms. Marvel is also set to be one of the most important shows in the MCU’s future considering it has a direct connection with the untitled Captain Marvel 2, directed by Nia DaCosta. El Arbi and Fallah should have the chance to fill out an exciting new story alongside Carol Danvers' next solo film, where Kamala will make an appearance around the time her series comes out.

Most fans will be thrilled to know that Marvel Studios is aiming for this series' episodes to be presented in one-hour format in the same way that The Falcon and the Winter Soldier and WandaVision will be released. Typically, shows that are produced in one-hour format have episodes varying in length from 35 minutes to as much as 55 minutes.

There is currently no set timeframe for the release of Ms. Marvel on Disney+, although signs point to sometime in 2022.

Dal sito The Hollywood Reporter:

'Ms. Marvel' Finds Directors in Pakistani Oscar Winner, 'Bad Boys For Life' Filmmakers (Exclusive)

Adil El Arbi, Bilall Fallah, Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy and Meera Menon are helping bring Marvel Studios' first Muslim hero to the screen.

Disney+'s Marvel series Ms. Marvel has assembled its directing team.

Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah, the duo behind this year's Bad Boys for Life, have been tapped to work on episodes of the series. Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, a two-time Oscar winner in the documentary short category, has also joined the helming roster for the series, as has Meera Menon, whose credits include episodes of The Walking Dead, The Punisher, Titans, Dirty John, and Outlander.

Ms. Marvel hails from head writer Bisha K. Ali, and centers on Kamala Khan, a Pakistani-American teen introduced in the comics in 2012. The New Jersey-based hero broke ground as Marvel's first Muslim character to star in her own title, and she will become Marvel Studios' first onscreen Muslim hero. Marvel Studios chief Kevin Feige has said that in addition to appearing on the small screen, Kamala Khan will also be included in future Marvel films. The studio is currently in search of an actor to play the hero, whose comics have explored her identity as a Pakistani-American living in a religious family in New Jersey whilst trying to find her own way.

El Arbi and Fallah successfully revived the 25-year-old Bad Boys franchise with January's third installment. The Will Smith and Martin Lawrence starrer earned $425.6 million globally, the highest gross of 2020 so far amid the coronavirus pandemic that shuttered theaters globally for months. The duo are also attached to Netflix's Beverly Hills Cop 4, to star Eddie Murphy, as well as the Muslim family drama Rebel. The Direct first reported their involvement with Ms. Marvel.

Obaid-Chinoy is a celebrated documentarian who took home Oscars for 2015's A Girl in the River: The Price of Forgiveness, exploring the aftermath of an attempted honor killing in Pakistan, and 2012's Saving Face, which looked at acid attacks on women in Pakistan and made her the first Pakistan-born filmmaker to win an Academy Award. The Pakistani-Canadian filmmaker also won Emmys for both projects and has collected a total of six in her career, also winning in 2014 for Pakistan's Taliban Generation and in 2010 for work on PBS' Frontline/World.

In addition to TV work on shows such as You and For All Mankind, Menon is known for her 2013 indie road trip comedy Farah Goes Bang, about a young Muslim woman seeking to lose her virginity while campaigning for John Kerry's 2004 presidential bid. She also directed the 2016 Sundance feature Equity.

Ms. Marvel is one of a slew of Marvel Cinematic Universe shows in the works for Disney+. WandaVision, starring Elizabeth Olsen and Paul Bettany, is the first expected to hit the small screen, with Disney confirming this week that it was planned for a 2020 release. The coronavirus-delayed Falcon and the Winter Soldier, which originally was set to bow this year, recently resumed production, while Tom Hiddleston's Loki was partially completed before the coronavirus shut it down.

El Arbi, Fallah and Obaid-Chinoy are repped by CAA. Menon is repped by WME.

Da Comicbook

Ms. Marvel Casting Call Reveals New Characters for Disney+ Series

The Marvel Cinematic Universe's slate is continuing to take shape, with some major casting announcements and other details coming into place for their roster of movies and Disney+ shows. One of the most anticipated projects on the MCU's slate is definitely Ms. Marvel, which will officially bring Kamala Khan/Ms. Marvel into live-action. While a lot of the series remains a mystery - including who will be cast in the titular role - a new report shines light on some of the supporting characters who will be joining the series. Murphy's Multiverse is reporting that a casting call has surfaced for the series, which call for a "young white actress, age 16-20", and a "Black actress, 27-33".

While casting calls traditionally use codenames, many have begun to speculate that the casting calls are for one of Kamala's friends, Zoe Zimmer, and her eventual sister-in-law, Tyesha Hillman. In the comics, Zoe is initially perceived as the popular girl in school, and is the very first person Kamala uses her Ms. Marvel powers to save. As the comics go along, Zoe grows to be a pivotal member of Kamala's crew, and even comes out as a lesbian and revealing her romantic feelings for another classmate and friend, Nakia.

Meanwhile, Tyesha is a young woman who falls in love with Kamala's older brother, Aamir, and Kamala reluctantly agrees to chaperone the two on their dates. They are eventually married, and Tyesha becomes part of the Khan family.

While there's no telling who will ultimately portray either of these roles, they do provide a bit more of a context into the supporting cast of Ms. Marvel. The series will follow the adventures of Kamala, a Muslim teenager who idolizes Captain Marvel and other Marvel heroes, and who uses her shapeshifting powers to fight crime in Jersey City. Her solo show is being showrun by Four Weddings and a Funeral's Bisha K. Ali, with Bad Boys for Life directors Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah, The Punisher director Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy and The Magicians director Meera Menon helming episodes of the series.

Ecco la protagonista!

Da Deadline

Newcomer Iman Vellani To Play Title Role In Marvel’s ‘Ms. Marvel’ Series For Disney Plus

EXCLUSIVE: After a long and hard search, Marvel has found its Ms. Marvel. The studio is tapping newcomer Imon Vellani to star in its Disney+ series based on the comic-book character. Marvel and Disney Plus recently named Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah, Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy and Meera Menon as directors on the project.

Marvel had no comment.

Ms. Marvel hails from writer Bisha K. Ali and centers on Kamala Khan, a Pakistani-American teen based in New Jersey. Ms. Marvel first appeared in 2014 as Marvel’s first Muslim character to star in her own title, and she will become Marvel Studios’ first onscreen Muslim hero. Marvel Studios chief Kevin Feige has said that in addition to appearing on the small screen, Kamala Khan will be included in future Marvel films.

The plan always was to stay true to the character in finding the right actress to play the role, even if it meant offering a person that was not well known to the public.

Marvel and Disney+ have been hard at work setting up their development slate in recent weeks by not only setting Tatiana Maslany to lead its She-Hulk but also giving Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury character his own series. The studio also announced that WandaVision would be the first show to premiere on the streamer later this year.

Though this marks Vellani’s first major Hollywood production, she has already made tries in trying to help diversify the industry. At the 2019 Toronto Film Festival, she was part of the Next Wave Committee which was tasked with adding a special tag to films — already programmed into other categories — which they believed would resonate with their peers.
