MGM to Distribute the Animated Bunyan & Babe
Source: MGM
May 7, 2009

Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Pictures and Exodus Film Group announced today that Bunyan & Babe, Exodus' new animated feature film, will be distributed in North America by MGM. The announcement was made by Exodus CEO, John Eraklis and Erik Lomis, President, Worldwide Theatrical Distribution, Home Entertainment & Acquisitions for MGM.

Bunyan & Babe is a modern take on the folk story of legendary lumberjack Paul Bunyan (John Goodman) and his sidekick, Babe the Blue Ox, who work with two adventurous kids to rescue their town from the evil clutches of a demented property developer (Kelsey Grammer).

"What Exodus has with 'Bunyan & Babe' is a new spin on a classic story. It is always a pleasure working with a company that is making this type of accessible family entertainment and we look forward to distributing this film," commented Lomis.

"'Bunyan & Babe' will bring to life this classic American character and introduce him to a whole new generation of movie-goers in a unique and original way," added Eraklis. "MGM demonstrated themselves to be a good partner on our last feature release and we are happy to be working alongside them again on this film."

Bunyan & Babe was written by Michael A. Nickles & Julia A. Wall and co-directed by Tony Bancroft (Mulan) and three-time Academy Award® winner Jim Rygiel ("The Lord of the Rings" trilogy for Best Visual Effects). Eraklis and Exodus Film Group President Max Howard are producing.

The Life and Adventures of Santa Claus (Toonz Entertainment produced, Hyde Park distributed)

Hyde Park to distribute Toonz' Santa Clause animation film
Story By: Businessofcinema.com Team updated on: 12/11/08

Mumbai: Singapore based Toonz Entertainment, which owns the Indian animation studio Toonz Animation India, has entered into an agreement with Gang of 7 Animation USA and Hyde Park Entertainment USA to produce a CGI (computer graphic imagery) animated feature film The Life and Adventures of Santa Claus.

It may be recalled that Businessofcinema.com was the first to report about Toonz Animation beginning production on The Life and Adventures of Santa Claus in February this year.

Based on the classic book by L. Frank Baum, the creator of The Wizard of Oz, the movie chronicles the life of Santa Claus from an infant to an adult. Along the way, Santa embarks on a hero's journey through an enchanted realm and into a confrontation with the heart of evil, ultimately revealing the origin of the world's best-loved Christmas legend.

The film will be directed by Tom Tataranowicz, Rich Arons and Dick Sebast and has a supporting team of artists who have worked on pictures such as Finding Nemo, The Lion King, and Iron Giant.

The project is currently in pre-production, with production set to commence in November at the Toonz Animation Studio in India. The movie is expected to be released in time for Christmas, 2010. Hyde Park will distribute the picture internationally and share North American rights with G7 Animation.

"This is our first CGI theatrical feature and it's a great moment for us. We at Toonz look forward to this challenging opportunity which would test our creative talents, and anticipate an exciting and quality production," said Toonz Group CEO P.Jayakumar.

"I grew up watching The Wizard of Oz. It's wonderful to bring this classic origin story of Santa Claus to the screen, particularly this novel from such an amazing writer," Hyde Park CEO Ashok Amritraj said.

"Amazingly enough, this is the first time an origin story, explaining Santa Claus and all the Christmas traditions, has ever come to the screen. We are very pleased to bring this exciting fantasy to...

The Wizard of Oz (Action Synthese produced)
http://geektyrant.com/2008/11/john-boorman...t-art-and-more/

This is the first time I have heard about a new Wizard of OZ film. It was just announced yesterday that John Boorman is set as its director. But, it looks like he has been helping to develop it for some time now. Action Synthese is the studio that is going to do the CGI work on the film. So far things are looking pretty good. The designs are very friendly and have an interesting style.

The Wonderful ‘Wizard of OZ’ is not a remake of the first film but it sounds like it is going to be a very solid version of the novel by Franck L. Baum. John Boorman seems to have a very strong respect to both the book and the classic movie. Below the pic is a statement he put out on Action Synthese website.

Around the World in 50 Years (nWave's Brussels produced)

StudioCanal and Universal Music Group (UMG) announced today a partnership for the upcoming 3D animated feature, Around the World in 50 Years.

As part of this agreement, UMG will handle all North American theatrical, DVD, television and non-theatrical rights to the movie. Moreover, UMG will also handle the soundtrack album on a global basis.

The film, "a buddy movie with turtles for the 21st century," is directed by Ben Stassen (Fly Me to the Moon) and is being produced at nWave's Brussels studio.

The announcement of the deal follows straight after the film's presentation to an exclusive, invitation-only audience at Cannes, as part of the international sales rollout. The presentation - which included almost 15 minutes of spectacular "immersion" 3D footage - was crafted and presented by former Dreamworks marketing executive, Peter Dunne who has signed on as an animation consultant for Studio Canal.

Olivier Courson, CEO of StudioCanal, said, "I am delighted about this partnership. We first approached our sister company Universal Music Group about the soundtrack which is so critical for an animated film, but Doug Morris (Chairman & CEO) was so enthusiastic that he decided not only to come on board for the music but also to become our partner for US distribution. We never even took the film to the market. This movie is another important step in our international production: 3D animation. We are happy to have partners within the Vivendi group who can bring together such a strong and diverse team of creative and marketing talent which this project deserves."

Doug Morris commented, "When Jolene Cherry (Senior Vice President of A&R, Universal Records) first brought the film to my attention, I realized what a true gem it is. It combines the most innovative technology available today with great story-telling to convey an important environmental message. We are thrilled to be working with Olivier and his team on this important project."

The soundtrack album to the movie will be created by Ms. Cherry and Vincent Herbert.

Rodolphe Buet, EVP International Distribution for StudioCanal, stated, "We are thrilled to have secured such a great home for 'Around the World in 50 Years.' We have long recognized that international success in family entertainment relies on a great US release, and this deal allows us to begin work right away with our partners in putting together a first-class marketing, licensing and promotional campaign for the film."

Harold Van Lier, StudioCanal's EVP, International Sales added, "With such a strong commitment from our US partner, and our own distribution in the major part of Europe, our sales campaign has got off to a really strong start, and I'm confident that we will secure our other distribution partners very quickly."

Around the World in 50 Years will be released in North America and internationally in Q4 2010.

DreamWorks Animation's Slate Through 2012!
Source: Variety
May 28, 2009

Variety reports that DreamWorks Animation CEO Jeffrey Katzenberg will unveil the company's slate through late 2012 for the investment community in New York today, revealing five original projects and a handful of franchise follow-ups. All will be produced in 3-D.

How to Train Your Dragon is written and directed by Chris Sanders and Den DeBlois. It stars Jay Baruchel, Gerard Butler, America Ferrera and Johan Hill. Set in the world of Vikings and dragons, it centers on an awkward teen who befriends an injured dragon. Look for "Dragon" on March 26, 2010.

2010 will also bring a fourth installment in the "Shrek" series (now titled Shrek Forever After). The film, scheduled for a release on May 21, 2010, is directed by Mike Mitchell.

Among the highlights of today's presentation is the new title for "Master Mind"--Oobermind--for which Robert Downey Jr. will voice a supervillain who finds life a little dull after vanquishing good-guy rival Metro Man. The superhero-themed film, based on a spec script from Ben Stiller's Red Hour Films, will open Nov. 5, 2010. Tina Fey also voices a character.

The following year brings two projects. For the first, the company confirmed signing Jack Black and Dustin Hoffman for Kung Fu Panda: The Kaboom of Doom, due out June 3, 2011. Longtime story executive Jennifer Yuh Nelson makes her feature directorial debut.

In its Nov. 4 slot, DreamWorks Animation has The Guardians, turning to a not-yet-published book series from children's literature-to-animation titan William Joyce, whose work has previously inspired Disney's Meet the Robinsons and Rolie Polie Olie. Jeff Lynch is attached to direct the film, which unites characters every child knows — Santa Claus, the Easter Bunny, the Tooth Fairy, Jack Frost and the Sandman — to defend the world from a Bogeyman-like villain.

2012 gets crowded once again, as Puss in Boots imagines events before the popular character's appearance in Shrek 2, while introducing all-new characters. Antonio Banderas returns, and Salma Hayek will lend her voice to love interest Kitty. Shrek the Third helmer Chris Miller is onboard to direct, with the film slated for March 30, 2012.

Just two months later, Madagascar helmer Eric Darnell offers up a third installment in the zoo-break series, which would relocate the critters from Africa to Europe via a traveling circus.

Katzenberg has staked out a third date that fall, Nov. 12, for an original feature, to be chosen from a trio of projects currently in development.

The first option, caveman comedy The Croods, from directors Chris Sanders and Kirk DeMicco, was once intended to be an Aardman collaboration. Another, Truckers, is derived from Terry Pratchett's "The Bromeliad Trilogy," with Simon Beaufoy adapting a story of miniature creatures stuck living in a department store.

Damaschke also cited a third option, tentatively titled "Super Secret Ghost Project," that asks what ghosts think about humans.

Monster Safari (Jim Henson Co. produced)

Writers go on Safari for Henson

Sunday, June 07, 2009
By: Thomas J. Mclean

The Jim Henson Co. has hired Craig Zobel and Matt Chapman to write the script for Monster Safari, a stop-motion animation film.

A trio of directors — Mark Caballero, Chris Finnegan and Seamus Walsh — also have been signed on for the project, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The story is about monsters who come out of hiding and have to be saved from game hunters by bumbling crypto-zoologists. The project began as a short film from Screen Novelties that attracted the attention of execs at Henson.

Zobel and Chapman similarly earned the gig based on a spec script the pair was shoppiong around. The duo, along with Chapman’s brother Mike, started an animation website called Homestarrunner.com.

Il progetto DreamWorks che prima era noto come "Super Secret Ghost Project" ora ha un nome e si chiama "Boo U."
Ecco un abbozzo di trama.

http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/hr/conten...313aec569f21a55

DreamWorks attending 'Boo U.'
Untitled ghost project aimed at a 2012 release

By Jay A. Fernandez and Borys Kit

June 18, 2009, 11:00 PM ET
DreamWorks Animation must be spooked.

The studio is pushing forward with a new untitled ghost project that is competing for a fourth-quarter 2012 release slot.

The project, referred to internally as "Boo U.," recently picked up writer Jon Vitti ("The Simpsons Movie"), who will pen the screenplay. The story line centers on a ghost who is bad at his job and must return to ghost school.

The project will be directed by Tony Leondis ("Igor") and executive produced by Gil Netter and Courtney Pledger.

Another ghost-centric film, referred to as "Freakers," was being written by Joe Syracuse & Lisa Addario ("Surf's Up") and centers on a ghost story told from the ghosts' point of view, in their world. That project is no longer active.

A third ghost-related story idea is in the pitch stage.

In late May, DWA CEO Jeffrey Katzenberg, whose contract recently was extended to 2013, said a "supersecret ghost project" was on the books for a potential late-2012 slot. "Boo U." is that project.

"Puss in Boots" (March 30) and a third "Madagascar" movie (May) also are slated for release in 2012. The ghost picture would hit theaters Nov. 12, unless the caveman comedy "The Croods" or the Terry Pratchett adaptation "Truckers" makes the cut instead.

Katzenberg has mandated that all future projects will be made in the 3D format. The studio's most recent 3D release, "Monsters vs. Aliens," has grossed $362 million worldwide.

Vitti has been a writer and producer on "Saturday Night Live," "The Larry Sanders Show," "The Simpsons" and "King of the Hill." He also worked as a story consultant and writer on "Ice Age," "Robots," "Ice Age: The Meltdown," "Alvin and the Chipmunks," "Horton Hears a Who!" and "Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel," which hits theaters Christmas Day.

Leondis, repped by WME and Anonymous Content, has worked on the animated films "The Prince of Egypt," "The Road to El Dorado" and "Home on the Range."

Laika unveils development slate
Phil Knight's animation studio readies 'Coraline'
By DAVID S. COHEN, PETER DEBRUGE
Jun. 23, 2008

Laika's first toon, 'Coraline,' centers on a girl who happens upon a dark alternative world.
'Here Be Monsters!' book

Phil Knight, whose Nike empire gives him an estimated worth of $7.9 billion, is bringing his muscle to showbiz, with ambitious plans for his Portland, Ore., animation studio to partner with a Hollywood major in a slate of toons.

Laika, which does both CG and stop-motion features, was created when Knight stepped in to buy the former Will Vinton Studios, famous for the California Raisins, after the company had fallen on hard times.

This fall the company is wrapping production on its first feature, the stop-motion "Coraline," helmed by Laika supervising director Henry Selick ("The Nightmare Before Christmas").

Laika is financing the film, based on the book by Neil Gaiman, with Focus Features to distribute. It is skedded for wide release beginning Feb. 6, 2009.

Lead animator on "Coraline" and head of animation for Laika is Travis Knight, son of the Nike founder. Travis Knight was already working as an animator at Vinton when his father bought the company and rebranded it.

Now, Laika is taking out three pitches, any one of which could be its next project. Ultimately, it may produce all three:

* "Here Be Monsters!" from the books by Alan Snow, is a steampunk-flavored story set in a fantasy version of 1850s London. The hero is a 12-year-old who's grown up in an underground world beneath the city that is full of monsters but must find his way in the world when he moves to the surface to live like a normal boy.

British writer Irena Brignell is penning the script; Antony Stacchi ("Open Season") would direct.

Stacchi calls the project "Dickensian" and "Python-esque." It could be either CG or stop-motion.

* "Jack and Ben," an original for CG animation, revolves around brother bluebirds who get into a dangerous road-rally-style race to Florida along the north-south migration route. Barry Cook ("Mulan") would direct, David Skelly is writing and Ric Sluiter ("Lilo & Stitch") is art director.

"What 'Finding Nemo' did under the water, we want to do in the air," said Fiona Kenshole, VP of development acquisitions for Laika.

Cook said the project features quirky characters inspired by the real-life Gumball Rally road race.

* "Paranorman," an original idea by "Coraline" story chief Chris Butler, concerns a small town under a secret curse. Only a 13-year-old boy can keep the town from being overrun by zombies, but no one will listen to him.

Pic could be stop-motion or CG. Butler is writer and co-director. The project is being developed under Selick's close supervision.

For "Coraline," Laika put up the entire production budget of $50 million-$70 million. For all three pitches, however, the company is seeking 50-50 partnerships.

Kenshole said Laika is looking for a niche that is edgier than that of most of its competish, while still being commercial.

"We're to the left of Pixar and to the right of 'Nightmare Before Christmas,' " Kenshole told Daily Variety.
More than one option

"There's a lot of people moving into animation, and what they do is copycat. The world isn't waiting for another Pixar and another DreamWorks. We want a slate that's uniquely ours, that hits the four quadrants and is commercial, but is really, really strong, based on good storytelling."

Laika is also well into development on three more projects to be pitched in future months:

* "The Wall and the Wing," adapted by "Lost" co-creator Jeffrey Lieber from the novel by Laura Ruby. Story is about a parallel contemporary Manhattan where everyone can fly except one girl -- but she can make herself invisible.

* An untitled comedy-adventure story based on a young-adult trilogy. Dick Clement and Ian La Franais ("The Commitments," "Flushed Away") are penning the script. Courtney Pledger and Sarah Radclyffe are attached as producers.

* An original story about the origins of Halloween by Selick and John Carls. Carls ("Open Season") is producing.

Phil Knight is "in this for the long run," said Nike vet and Laika CEO Dale Wahl. "One thing that points to his commitment is the fact that he went out and bought some land for a Laika campus."

The company expects to break ground later this year on that 30-acre campus in Tualitin, Ore. Designed by the same architects as the Nike campus, it will bring the CG and stop-motion operations together, though the company's commercials division, House, will likely remain closer to downtown Portland.

Laika now employs approximately 550 people, with some 100 in the House division.

High in the Clouds (Unique Features produced, Warner Bros distributed)

Animated feature "High in the Clouds" is an adaptation of a children's book written by McCartney, Geoff Dunbar and Philip Ardagh. The film will be directed by Rob Minkoff and adapted by Caroline Thompson. The book, about a squirrel's quest to find an animal sanctuary, marks McCartney's largest involvement in an animated pic since the Beatles frontman was part of 1968's "Yellow Submarine."

Happy Feet 2 in 3D (28/11/2011) (Animal Logic produced, Warner Bros distributed)

The studio has also nailed a date down for George Miller’s sequel to Happy Feet which we first learned about in August of last year. The movie, tentatively titled Happy Feet 2 in 3D will hit theaters on November 18th 2011. Hopefully they leave the live-action human characters out of the next installment.
