David Callaham’s Marvel Studios Project Revealed to Be ‘SHANG-CHI’

Just over a month ago, we broke the news that Marvel Studios had hired Wonder Woman 1984 scribe David Callaham to begin developing a screenplay for an unknown project. Today the identity of the project was revealed by the trades and we are thrilled to report that Callaham will be penning the script for a solo Shang-Chi film, bringing the Master of Kung Fu to the MCU. According to the report, the Chinese-American Callaham will work on the story while the studio searches for Asian and Asian-American directors to helm the project and bring the first Asian superhero to the MCU. When we first reported Callaham’s involvement we noted that he had been brought on in early October so it’s unclear how far along the script is and the new report did not indicate that Marvel Studios was near hiring a director, so it’s unlikely that this film will go into production any time soon.

Shang-Chi, born out of the Bruce Lee inspired martial arts madness of the early-70s, first appeared in December 1973’s Special Marvel Edition #15 as the Master of Kung Fu. While his story, like so many others, has been retconned extensively, Shang-Chi is the son of Chinese crime boss (or evil sorcerer) and was raised to be a weapon. Upon learning of his father’s wickedness, Shang-Chi joined MI-6, the British Intelligence agency that had long been working against his father. Shang-Chi headlined his own series, Master of Kung Fu, from 1974-1983, where writer Doug Moench built a much deeper world around the character and created one of Marvel’s most popular and entertaining books of the 70s. Since then, Shang-Chi has worked with the street-level Heroes for Hire like Iron Fist and Luke Cage, been an Avenger and popped in and out of other series. He is considered possibly the best martial artist in the Marvel Universe, having fought Danny Rand to a draw.

It’s almost certain that Marvel Studios views Shang-Chi as a tentpole franchise and not a one-off solo series. In addition to keeping with their promise to improve representation for all cultures going forward, Marvel Studios is also very aware of the huge impact the Chinese box office has made on their films and have been eyeing ways to to continue inroads there for some time. Shang-Chi could easily fill a James Bond role for the studio and the supporting cast offers ample opportunity to assemble a nearly entirely Asian or Asian-American cast.

We’d love to hear your reactions to the news that Shang-Chi, the Master of Kung Fu, is headed to the big screen.

Destin Daniel Cretton To Direct Marvel’s SHANG-CHI

Shang-Chi, Marvel’s first Asian superhero in a lead role, is about to get a Captain Marvel connection. Destin Daniel Cretton, who previously directed Brie Larson in Short Term 12, will helm the upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe film.

The project was announced in December. It will not only be the first to feature an Asian actor in the title role, it will also be the first to consist of a primarily Asian cast. It was also a top priority for the studio to hire an Asian director according to IndieWire. Kevin Feige himself said that diversity has been an important directive for them. It’s a good thing that Marvel was able to follow through. Shang-Chi‘s screenwriter is Asian-American, as well. Dave Callaham’s credits include The Expendables and Wonder Woman 1984. We can safely assume he’s a fan of both action and heroes.

This isn’t the first time that Marvel has picked up an indie (or smaller-scale) director, as Ryan Coogler made the leap from films like Fruitvale Station and Creed to Black Panther and the Captain Marvel team of Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck were busy with television episodes of Billions and The Affair before they took on Carol Danvers. Similarly, Cretton came from directing Short Term 12 and The Glass Castle – both starring Larson. Betting on smaller budget directors for their most recent origin stories seems to have paid off for the studio, and there’s no reason to think this latest endeavor will be any different.

Marvel Brings Shang-Chi to Life

Marvel Comics first created the character of Shang-Chi in 1971, and introduced him s the Master of Kung Fu. Hopefully the film will wash away the bad taste left by both the first season of Iron Fist on Netflix and its recent cancellation. Shang-Chi will have Asian players behind the scenes as well as in front. We don’t yet know whether the movie version will contain the duplication powers that Shang-Chi possesses in certain comics. Notwithstanding, he will certainly have the incredible martial arts skills that he’s best known for.

EXCLUSIVE: Donnie Yen, Ludi Lin On Marvel Studios ‘SHANG-CHI’ Short List

It appears that Marvel Studios has begun its search for Shang-Chi. According to our source, Ludi Lin (Power Rangers, Aquaman and Black Mirror) is among the actors with whom the studio is interested in meeting to discuss the role. Though Lin’s name is the first to emerge, there is no indication at this point that he is a favorite to land the role. In fact, our source tells us that we should expect to hear more names emerge over the next couple of weeks.

in’s career trajectory has led him to this opportunity. He lobbied for the role of Shang-Chi last December. Further, his recent turns in Aquaman and, most recently, Black Mirror Season 5, have gained him notoriety. His desire to lead Marvel Studios’ first Asian-centric superhero film, coupled with his extensive martial arts training have put him on Feige’s radar. It seems that he’ll soon have his chance to impress the man with the plan. We have also heard that one time Disney kid, Ross Butler, may have a chance to sit down with Feige as well.

Marvel Studios began developing SHANG-CHI in early October of 2018 when they hired writer David Callaham to pen the script. At that time, the trades reported that the studio had already begun meeting with Asian directors to helm the project. In March, Destin Cretton inked a deal to direct the project. Later, in early April, the New South Wales government revealed they had an agreement with Marvel Studios to film a major motion picture at Fox Studios. Likewise, over the past month, evidence has continued to mount that film would be SHANG-CHI.

Marvel Begins Casting Search

In late May, I revealed on my podcast that casting for the film had begun. GWW later revealed that Marvel Studios was looking for two Asian actors for the film. One would play a wise, old statesman and one of his deadliest warriors. Just last week, the studio brought Sue Chan on board as the film’s production designer. While I have been unable to confirm it, I have been told that the studio is currently targeting an early-November start of production. Given Marvel Studios known slate of films, it’s possible that SHANG-CHI will take the February 12, 2021 date. That would coincide with the Chinese/Lunar New Year.

Could Donnie Yen Be in Shang-Chi?

Additionally, our source indicated to us that Marvel Studios hoped to meet with Donnie Yen for an as yet unidentified role, confirming prior reports. Yen is an icon in Hong Kong. His inclusion in the film would be be chalked up as a huge win for the project. Of course, the role Marvel Studios has in mind for him is being kept under wraps. Nevertheless, Yen certainly fits the description of the “wise, old statesman” mentioned above. (Many fans believe that role to belong to the Mandarin).

Marvel Studios hasn’t officially revealed its post-Infinity Saga MCU slate. Notwithstanding, Kevin Feige has spoken publicly about SHANG-CHI and its importance. It is expected that it we’ll get some kind of official announcement at either SDCC or D23. Stay tuned to That Hashtag Show for more on this story as it develops.

Dal sito HN Entertainment:

Marvel’s ‘Shang-Chi’ Movie May Shoot Scenes In Los Angeles

HN Entertainment has learned that Marvel Studios’ next film to go into production Shang-Chi and The Legend of The Ten Rings is going to be shooting scenes outside of its primary production space in Sydney, Australia at Fox Studios Australia.

Today, we’ve been tipped-off that Shang-Chi will spend some of it’s filming in the United States with signs pointing towards Los Angeles, California.

Thor: Love and Thunder will also film Fox Studios Australia and a secondary location within the United States.

There had been some talk about filming in Hong Kong, but considering the political landmines associated with filming on the island, I doubt Disney/Marvel shoots there.

Thailand has been mentioned as a secondary filming locale as well (much more likely).

Shang-Chi will be directed by Destin Daniel Cretton (Just Mercy) from a script penned by Dave Callaham (Wonder Woman 1984, The Expendables).

The superhero will be the first leading Asian hero in an MCU film making Shang-Chi instantly a potential landmark event for Disney if handled properly. He’s basically an all-around badass action hero from the master of kung fu to playboy spy.

He also eventually developed the ability to duplicate himself, but that remains to be seen if the power-set will be explored in his movies.

Canadian actor Simu Liu will be playing the main hero and was a surprise casting, but a welcomed one after his charismatic appearance at the San Diego Comic-Con and active/entertaining presence on social media.

As the title suggests The Ten Rings will be making their triumphant return to the MCU as Tony Leung (Infernal Affairs, The Grandmaster) will be playing the real version of the Mandarin in the film and many assume will be a surrogate for Shang-Chi’s father Fu Manchu.

Rising star Awkwafina (Crazy Rich Asians, Jumanji: The Next Level) is also officially on board as the female lead but her character has yet to be confirmed by Marvel.

We previously mentioned that Clive Reston is expected to appear in the film, but I wouldn’t be shocked if many other of Shang-Chi’s cohorts from the solo comics show up as well as a way to build out his budding action franchise.

It’s been a little quite casting-wise since that original San Diego Comic-Con announcement but I expect we’ll start hearing learning who else is part of the cast soon enough.

Shang Chi and The Legend of The Ten Rings is officially set for release on February 12th, 2021.

EXCLUSIVE: Working Title For Marvel’s ‘Shang-Chi’ Confirmed To Be ‘Steamboat’

Yesterday, HN Entertainment was able to confirm that portion of Shang-Chi and The Legend of The Ten Rings would be filming Stateside (most likely Los Angeles, California) as a bulk of the filming will mainly take place at Fox Studios Australia in Sydney, Australia.

We can now exclusively reveal that Shang-Chi’s working title during the production will be Steamboat.

I have to assume that the title is a nod to Asian-American wrestler Ricky “The Dragon” Steamboat.

Working titles are used to confuse locals to what is actually shooting in their area and the title will likely be used during overseas portions of the filming as well (the U.S. and possibly Thailand).

The most recent working title used for Eternals is Sack Lunch, which we also first reported on.

Shang-Chi will be directed by Destin Daniel Cretton (Just Mercy) from a script by Dave Callaham (Wonder Woman 1984, The Expendables).

There have been previous production reports of the film beginning filming next month, however, (in our opinion) it doesn’t seem to be ready on the prep side of things and we still haven’t had a single new casting announcement since San Diego Comic-Con back in July.

The lack of casting news is strange considering the size of the film and normally we get trade reports/leaked casting shortlists before filming begins on a Marvel Studios installment.

Although, lead actor Simu Liu has been posting images from Sydney on his official Instagram account.

Tony Leung (Infernal Affairs, The Grandmaster) is set to play the villainous Mandarian (the real version), who is assumed to be the surrogate stand-in for Shang-Chi’s evil father Fu Manchu.

Awkwafina (Jumanji: The Next Level, Crazy Rich Asians) is playing the film’s female lead but her character has yet to be officially announced by Marvel.

The terrorist group The Ten Rings will be making a comeback after being first introduced in the original Iron Man and has been teased throughout multiple MCU installments.

Once Shangi-Chi finishes filming at Fox Studios, the next Marvel project to move in there will be Taika Waititi’s Thor: Love and Thunder said to start shooting next August.

Despite a lot of the Phase 4 movies shooting outside of the United States (Pinewood Studios UK/Fox Studios Australia) we’ve been able to confirm upcoming movies like Black Panther 2 and Ant-Man 3 are set to shoot there primarily.

Thor: Love and Thunder and Doctor Strange In The Multiverse of Madness are going to shooting scenes/scheduled reshoots in the United States too (as we reported yesterday).

Shang-Chi and The Legend of The Ten Rings is set for release on February 12th, 2021.

Dal sito HN Entertainment:

EXCLUSIVE: ‘Shang-Chi’ Main Production Expected To Take Place January To May

Thanks to some help from a tipster, HN Entertainment has learned that the main production on Marvel’s Shang-Chi and The Legend of The Ten Rings is expected to last from January to May of next year.

Some early filming on the project may have or will occur (this would explain the “November start” production reports), but it remains to be seen if that is for the actual film (Captain Marvel shot scenes early before the main productions started) or possibly a button scene for something like Black Widow.

However, the main shoot is going to kick-off sometime in January and wrap in May according to a character breakdown for the film as Marvel continues to find actors to fill the supporting roles (dates for scheduled reshoots are currently unknown).

This could also explain why director Destin Daniel Cretton told Collider recently during an interview that Shang-Chi wouldn’t begin filming until early next year.

Cretton noted that they plan to start filming early next year.

In that same interview, Cretton confirmed that they’ve indeed hired cinematographer Bill Pope (The Matrix).

The film’s script was penned by screenwriter Dave Callaham, who has worked on films such as The Expendables, Wonder Woman 1984, Godzilla, and Zombieland: Double Tap.

Production locations are said to include Fox Studios Australia in Sydney, New South Wales Australia (primary studio stage space) along with secondary locales such as Los Angeles, California and possibly Thailand/Vietnam as well.

Filming will be done under the working title of Steamboat (as confirmed by HN), a possible nod to professional wrestler Ricky “The Dragon” Steamboat.

MCUCosmic recently reported that the film’s secondary villains will include Ghostmaker, Moving Shadow, Razor-Fist, and Steel-Claw (Tiger-Claw?).

FullCircleCinema revealed an audition tape with Kiwi actor Te Kohe Tuhaka (The Dead Lands, 6 Days, Monster Problems) reading for the part of Steel-Claw.

The main cast so far includes Simu Liu as Shang-Chi, Tony Leung as The Mandarin, and Awkwafina as the undisclosed female lead.

We’ll likely start hearing the names of the rest of the cast before the end of the year.

Once Shang-Chi completes filming Taika Waititi’s Thor: Love and Thunder will be moving into Fox Studios Australia with cameras set to begin rolling sometime in August.

Michelle Yeoh Rumored For Marvel Studios’ ‘Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings’

UPDATE 1/21/2020 11:45AM
ComicBook.com is now reporting that Yeoh is indeed in talks for the project and that the role will not be for Starhawk, but a new role altogether. A similar situation that saw Captain Marvel actress Gemma Chan take on a new role in this year’s Eternals.

Marvel Studios’ Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings is about to kick off production, and there is still a lot of mystery surrounding the film, but one thing is for sure the cast is continuing to grow.

Now according to The Weekly Planet Podcast, Crazy Rich Asians star Michelle Yeoh has joined the film in a yet to be determined role.

Yeoh is no stranger to the Marvel Cinematic Universe as she appeared in James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 as Aleta Ogord, also known as Starhawk. The podcast went on to say that Yeoh will return as Starhawk in Guardians 3, so it is safe to assume she would play the character in Shang-Chi.

Directed by Destin Daniel Cretton (Just Mercy), the film is set to star newcomer Simu Liu as the titular hero, popular Chinese actor Tony Leung (Infernal Affairs), and Awkwafina (Jumanji: The Next Level, Crazy Rich Asians) in an unknown role.

Shang-Chi and the Legend of Ten Rings will be in theaters on February 12, 2021.

Michelle Yeoh In Talks For Marvel's Shang-Chi

Michelle Yeoh looks to be circling a new role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe next February, in Shang Chi and the Legend of The Ten Rings. Following reports over the weekend, ComicBook.com has also learned that Yeoh is indeed in talks to join the film and this role looks to be separate from her Guardians of the Galaxy character. The actress previously portrayed Aleta Ogord during a brief cameo in Gaurdians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 which will be unlikely to carry over to Shang-Chi and The Legend of the Ten Rings. Other actors who have played different Marvel characters include Alfre Woodard (Luke Cage, Captain America: Civil War), Gemma Chan (Captain Marvel, Eternals), and Mahershala Ali (Luke Cage, Blade).

Yeoh's accomplished career boasts titles such as Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, Tomorrow Never Dies, and Crazy Rich Asians. She recently played a role in CBS All Access series Star Trek: Discovery and is expected to shoot a spinoff pilot centered around her Captain Phillippa Georgiou over the summer titled Star Trek: Section 31.

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings is slated to begin production in Australia this year, directed by Destin Daniel Crettin, and starring Simu Liu, Awkwafina, and Ton Chiu-Wai Leung. Crettin is best known for his work on Short Term 12, The Glass Castle, and Just Mercy. Liu has appeared in Kim's Convenience, the Taken TV series, and Blood and Water. Awkwafina was recently a fan-favorite in Jumanji: The Next Level and won a Golden Globe award for her performance as Billi in The Farewell. She also appeared in Ocean's Eight and Crazy Rich Asians.

Munteanu Up For Marvel’s “Shang-Chi”?

A reliable source here in Sydney has reported to Dark Horizons that “Creed II” star and professional heavyweight boxer Florian Munteanu has apparently scored a secondary villain role in the upcoming Marvel Studios feature “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings”.

The project is filming in the first half of the year in Australia’s biggest city at the Fox Studios complex (now owned by Disney) ahead of “Thor: Love and Thunder” taking over the complex in the back half. There has been no other confirmation of this casting report though so treat it as a rumour for now. An e-mail sent to a Disney U.S. rep the other week asking for confirmation or denial was not responded to.

Munteanu, who played Viktor Drago in the “Creed” sequel and scored raves for his work, has his own social media channels which confirms he has been in Australia since late January. Munteanu appears to have arrived around the same time other cast members from the film like Awkwafina and Tony Leung Chiu-wai were also spotted around town with Secrets of Eternals reporting that some shooting took place in Centennial Park behind the Fox Studios complex early last month.

In October last year came a report at MCU Cosmic indicating that while Tony Leung’s Mandarin will be the primary villain of the movie, other baddies from the comics like Tiger-Claw, Moving Shadow, Razor-Fist, and Ghost Maker could appear as the film is said to in part revolve around an underground fight tournament – so Shang-Chi would be facing off against several opponents.

“Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings” is scheduled to hit cinemas February.

SHANG-CHI AND THE LEGEND OF THE TEN RINGS May Have Cast Chinese Actress Fala Chen In Key Role

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings was forced to halt production in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, and now a new report indicates that Chinese actress Fala Chen may be part of the Marvel movie.

In a new report from Murphy's Multiverse, it's suggested that Chinese actress Fala Chen has landed a key role in Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. While it's not confirmed, activity on her social media account points to it being highly likely as she's started following Shang-Chi actor Simi Liu and director Destin Daniel Cretton.

Other photos shared by the actress also line up with the timeline for production on the Marvel Studios movie (before it was forced to shut down as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic).

Earlier this year, we learned that MI6 Agent Leiko Wu is set to be part of Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, so it's entirely possible that's who Chen is set to play here. Why this character? Well, we've yet to hear who else could end up taking on that role in the MCU!

That is just speculation for now, of course, but the report the site shared yesterday about Solo: A Star Wars Story actress Erin Kellyman starring in The Falcon and The Winter Soldier has since been confirmed, so this isn't one that should be dismissed. We'll have to wait and see, as more casting news is likely to be a long way off while we await work on Shang-Chi's origin story to resume.

In the comics, Wu is a frequent ally to this movie's titular hero, and is likely going to help him track down The Mandarin if that is indeed the direction this story is heading in.

As always, we'll keep you guys updated as we learn more!

Dal sito DeadLine:

‘Shang-Chi And The Legend Of The Ten Rings’ Prepping To Restart Production In Australia By End Of July

Deadline has learned from sources on the ground in Sydney, Australia that Disney/Marvel’s Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings is looking to restart filming later this month at Fox Studios.

The Destin Daniel Cretton-directed film is in prep now, and our Sydney source says that Marvel is taking “careful steps.” The movie began filming back in February. The pic is expected to kick off next summer’s box office on May 7, 2021.

Shang-Chi reps the second movie from Walt Disney Studios that is resuming following 20th Century Studios’ Avatar 2 which got back to work last month in New Zealand.

I understand that the cast and crew of Shang-Chi who travel to Australia will be quarantined upon arrival per the country’s guidance. Accommodations for those in quarantine are identified by the government.

Shang-Chi‘s first unit production paused back in March, as Cretton self isolated himself after consulting a doctor and being tested for COVID-19. The director took extra precautions given his newborn baby. Cretton’s test came back negative.

Shang-Chi stars Simu Lu, Awkwafina and Tony Leung. Marvel Studios’ Kevin Feige is producing the film. Marvel’s Louis D’Esposito, Victoria Alonso, and Jonathan Schwartz are EPs.

In the Marvel comics, Shang-Chi is the son of a China-based globalist who raised and educated his progeny in his reclusive China compound, closed off to the outside world. The son is trained in the martial arts and develops unsurpassed skills. He is eventually introduced to the outside world to do his father’s bidding, and then has to come to grips with the fact his revered father might not be the humanitarian he has claimed to be.

Dal sito MCU Cosmic:

Exclusive Details on The Mandarin and Fin Fang Foom in Shang-Chi

Things have been a little slow for Marvel news lately, but with productions starting back up after the shutdowns we’re starting to hear some cool things about the 2021 Marvel Cinematic Universe entries from sources close to the productions; beginning with next May’s Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings.

The first bit might have been included in some of those “plot leaks” that appeared on places like 4Chan, but it means at least part of those are true. When the story starts The Mandarin and Shang-Chi are not enemies, and The Mandarin acts as a mentor figure for Shang-Chi. There might have been a plot leak that said that Shang-Chi worked for The Mandarin, and that would fit with him being a mentor to the young Master of Kung Fu when the movie starts.

Even bigger (literally) is the dragon Fin Fang Foom. We’ve known for a while that he’d appear in the movie, but now there are more details as to how he fits into the story and why we haven’t seen the giant dragon in the MCU yet.

Doctor Strange introduced the concept of magic to the MCU and showed us that there were sorcerers all around the world. That movie established that three Sanctums together helped protect the Earth, and it appears that concept of a magical trinity will continue in Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings where there is a trio of wizards who are tasked with keeping Fin Fang Foom dormant. Obviously something is going to happen to them to cause the dragon to awaken in the movie.

Now this part is just my speculation, but what if Mordo carries through with his “too many sorcerers” mantra and unknowingly unleashes Fin Fang Foom by taking out those wizards? There have been some plot leaks that say Mordo shows up in the movie as a cameo, so it’d be a really cool connection back to that post-credits stinger in Doctor Strange to show Mordo robbing these wizards of their magic, only to unleash a giant dragon.

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings has resumed production in Australia and is currently scheduled for release in May of 2021. Hopefully we’ll learn some more details, such as more cast members, as we get closer to that release date.

Da The Disinsider

Awkwafina Speaks On Her Mystery ‘Shang-Chi’ Character For The First Time

In her recent interview with Stylecaster.com, comedian, rapper, and actress Awkwafina not only discussed what drew her to Disney’s upcoming animated film Raya and the Last Dragon. She offered some details about her mystery role in Marvel’s highly anticipated Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings for the very first time.
While she couldn’t exactly reveal the name of her character, or how big her character is, she did go on to say:
“I do feel like I can relate to her. I can’t say much about the role, but I can say that she is thrust into a world where she doesn’t really know what to do. At the same time, she’s discovering things about herself. The Marvel universe is incredible. To work within it is like utopia. Nothing goes wrong. Everyone is so supportive. Everyone is super passionate and into it at every level. I’m really excited for people to see it.”
She also spoke about the importance of Asian American representation, and how the film avoids the average Asian tropes:
“When you think about certain things that have characterized Asians and Asian Americans in American media, you think about things like kung fu and martial arts. While this movie is actually about that, we were able to work with world-class stunt teams of people where this is their livelihood. So the authenticity that the studio and Destin approached those tropes is very, very special. When you want to avoid certain things, you have to be authentic with it. You have to do it the right way. Everything that this movie is about in terms of the culture and also the action movie genre, it’s authentic every way through.”
As she mentions, Shang-Chi is set to be the MCU’s first film with an Asian American lead, and will pave the way for a brand new generation of diverse heroes and stories.
While plot – and obviously character – details have been kept tightly under wrap, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, it’s possible we may get more information this Thursday during Disney’s Investor Day.
The film is directed by Daniel Destin Cretton (Short Term 12, Just Mercy), and will star actor, writer, and stuntman Simu Liu (Kim’s Convenience) as the titular hero. Having finished filming this past October, the film is expected to be released on July 9, 2021.
