‘Doogie Howser’ Female-Led Reboot ‘Doogie Kealoha, M.D.’ In Works At Disney+ From Kourtney Kang

Doogie Howser, M.D., ABC’s classic 1989 half-hour medical dramedy series, is making a comeback and getting a makeover. I have learned that Disney+ is developing Doogie Kealoha, M.D. (working title), a reboot of the Neil Patrick Harris-starring show with a female lead, which comes from How I Met Your Mother and Fresh Off the Boat alumna Kourtney Kang and 20th Century Fox TV.

Set in Hawaii, Doogie Kealoha, M.D. centers on a 16-year-old half Asian, half white girl who works as a doctor. The lead character’s ethnicity reflects Hawaii-born Kang’s own background — she previously tapped into her experiences growing up in a mixed-race family in a comedy pilot for NBC.

The original series, which starred Harris as a teenage physician balancing the challenge of practicing medicine with the everyday problems of teenage life, was created by two of TV’s top showrunners of the past three decades, the late Steven Bochco and David E. Kelley, and produced by Steven Bochco Prods. and 20th Century Fox TV.

Bochco’s widow, Dayna Bochco, and son, Jesse Bochco, executive produce the reboot alongside Kang as well as Jake Kasdan and Melvin Mar. 20th Century Fox TV, where Kang, Kasdan and his producing partner Mar are overall deals, is the studio.

Kang served as co-executive producer on ABC/20th TV’s Fresh Off the Boat, which Kasdan and Mar executive produced. Prior to that Kang was one of the key writer-producers on CBS/20th TV’ How I Met Your Mother, which also starred harris. She was on the popular ensemble comedy for its entire nine-season run, rising from a staff writer to executive producer.

Doogie Howser, M.D., which ran for four seasons, has become a pop culture staple, with the title character’s name becoming a moniker used for any teen savants in medicine, politics and other areas.

This is the latest series reboot of a family-friendly movie or TV title at Disney+, joining Turner & Hooch, also from 20th TV, part of Disney TV Studios, The Mighty Ducks, High School Musical: The Musical: The Series and a Beauty and the Beast spinoff in development.

‘Doogie Howser’ Female-Led Reboot ‘Doogie Kameāloha, M.D.’ Picked Up To Series By Disney+

EXCLUSIVE: Disney+ has given a 10-episode straight-to-series order to comedy Doogie Kameāloha, M.D. (working title), a re-imagining of the popular 1989 ABC series Doogie Howser, M.D.. The project (fka Doogie Kealoha, M.D.), which reboots the Neil Patrick Harris-starring half-hour medical dramedy with a female lead, comes from How I Met Your Mother and Fresh Off the Boat alumna Kourtney Kang and 20th Television, a part of Disney Television Studios.

Written by Kang and set in modern-day Hawaii, Doogie Kameāloha, M.D. follows Lahela “Doogie” Kameāloha, a mixed race 16-year-old girl, juggling a budding medical career and life as a teenager. Guiding Lahela (and also complicating things) is her family, including her spit-fire Irish mother who’s also her supervisor at the hospital, and her Hawaiian “Local Boy” father struggling to accept that his daughter is no longer his little girl.

The lead character’s ethnicity reflects Hawaii-born Kang’s own background — she previously tapped into her experiences growing up in a mixed-race family in a comedy pilot for NBC. Doogie Kameāloha, M.D., which had been in development for Disney+ since early 2020, is slated to go into production later this year for a 2021 premiere on the streamer. I hear casting is underway for the lead and the other major roles, with an intention to shoot the show in Hawaii.

“Thirty years ago, a young medical prodigy took the world by storm and left a lasting impact on pop culture,” said Ricky Strauss, president, Content and Marketing, Disney+. “Kourtney and the team at 20th Television have created a very modern take on this beloved property which will resonate with our global Disney+ audience. We can’t wait to introduce the world to the new Doogie!”

The original series, which starred Harris as a teenage physician balancing the challenge of practicing medicine with the everyday problems of teenage life, was created by two of TV’s top showrunners of the past three decades, the late Steven Bochco and David E. Kelley, and produced by Steven Bochco Prods. and 20th Television predecessor 20th Century Fox TV.

Bochco’s widow, Dayna Bochco, and son, Jesse Bochco, serve as producers the reboot, executive produced by Kang, Jake Kasdan and Melvin Mar. 20th Television, where Kang, Kasdan and his producing partner Mar are overall deals, is the studio.

“Doogie, Howser MD is beloved by everyone at our studio, so we knew that if we were going to reinvent it for a new generation, we had to have both the blessing and participation of the Bochcos and a creator with a fresh, new take that made us lean in,” said Carolyn Cassidy, president, 20th Television. “Kourtney’s vision for the character is so inspired, we’ve been dying to collaborate with Melvin and Jake again, and Disney+ is exactly the right home for this idea. We couldn’t be more excited.”

Running for four seasons on ABC from 1989 to 1993, Doogie Howser, M.D. catapulted Harris into television stardom and made the term “Doogie Howser” synonymous with kid geniuses.

Under her overall deal, Kang also has drama The Golden Child in development at ABC.

The green light for Doogie Kameāloha, M.D. comes as Disney TV Studios’ The Mighty Ducks series reboot for Disney+ resumed production, with the studio group’s Turner & Hooch series for the streamer about to start filming.

Kathleen Rose Perkins to Star in Disney+ Series ‘Doogie Kameāloha’

Following the news of Peyton Elizabeth Lee starring as ‘Doogie’ in the upcoming reboot, more casting has been announced. According to Deadline, Kathleen Rose Perkins will be playing her mother, Dr. Clara Hannon in the series.

Perkins is best known for her role in the sitcom Episodes, which aired on Showtime in the US and on BBC in the UK.
The character of Dr. Hannon is described as a “spitfire Irish mother” who also happens to be the Chief of Staff at the hospital at which ‘Doogie’ works.

Yet to be announced is the casting of Doogie’s father, who is said to be a Hawaiian “Local Boy” that is struggling with watching his daughter grow up.
Titled Doogie Kameāloha, the Disney+ original series will follow the titular character during her teenage years as she pursues a medical career. The show is set in modern-day Hawaii.

This reboot is created by Kourtney Kane, of Fresh Off the Boat and How I Met Your Mother. It will be executive produced by Jake Kasdan, director of the recent Jumanji films and son of Star Wars writer Lawrence Kasdan. No official release date has been set.

Il padre della protagonista sarà Jason Scott Lee, scelta ideale e pura Disney direi.

Da Deadline

‘Doogie Kameāloha, M.D.’: Jason Scott Lee To Star In ‘Doogie Howser’ Reboot At Disney+

EXCLUSIVE: Jason Scott Lee (Mulan) is set as a lead opposite Peyton Elizabeth Lee and Kathleen Rose Perkins in Disney+’s upcoming comedy series Doogie Kameāloha, M.D.

Written by Kourtney Kang and set in present-day Hawaii, Doogie Kameāloha, M.D. reimagines the Neil Patrick Harris-starring Doogie Howser M.D. as a half-hour medical dramedy with a female lead. It follows Lahela “Doogie” Kameāloha (Peyton Elizabeth Lee), a 16-year-old mixed-race girl who juggles a budding medical career and life as a teenager. Guiding Lahela — and also complicating things — is her family, including her spitfire Irish mother Dr. Clara Hannon (Perkins), who’s also Chief of Staff at the hospital and Lahela’s supervisor, and her Hawaiian “Local Boy” father (Jason Scott Lee) who struggles to accept that his daughter is no longer his little girl.

Lee’s Benny Kameāloha worked in finance on the mainland, but gave that up to return home and focus on what matters most: family. He now runs a shave ice flower truck, a career change that enables him to be a more present father to his three children.

Doogie Kameāloha, M.D. goes for a double gender swap as part of its female-empowerment theme. In Doogie Howser, created by the late Steven Bochco and David E. Kelley, it is Doogie’s father who is a medical doctor working at the same hospital as his son; Doogie’s mother originally was a housewife and later became a patient advocate at her son’s hospital.

Bochco’s widow, Dayna Bochco, and son, Jesse Bochco, serve as executive producers for the reboot, along with Kang, Jake Kasdan and Melvin Mar. 20th Television, part of Disney TV Studios, is the studio.

Jason Scott Lee has a long history with Disney. He most recently played the lead villain Bori Khan in the studio’s live-action remake of Mulan. He also played Mowgli in Disney’s The Jungle Book live-action adaptation, and voiced David Kawena in both Lilo and Stich films.

Lee also is known for playing the title role in Dragon: The Bruce Lee Story. He recently shot the title role in David L. Cunningham’s period drama The Wind and the Reckoning based on the Jack London short story as well as Western thriller Boon opposite Neal McDonough. Lee is repped by Buchwald, Authentic Talent and Literary Management and attorney Geoff Oblath.
