Dal sito The Hollywood Reporter:

Marvel Developing ‘Wonder Man’ Series With Destin Daniel Cretton, Andrew Guest (Exclusive)

The 'Shang-Chi' filmmaker is teaming with the 'Brooklyn Nine-Nine' and 'Community' scribe, who will serve as head writer.

Wonder Man is the latest Marvel superhero to get the screen treatment.

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings filmmaker Destin Daniel Cretton has teamed up with Andrew Guest, a writer-producer on comedies such as Brooklyn Nine-Nine and Community, to tackle a live-action series featuring the longtime Marvel character.

Guest will serve as head writer of the series, while Cretton will exec produce and possibly direct an episode or more. Cretton is working via his overall deal with Marvel Studios, signed late last year in the glow of Shang-Chi’s success. The two will also act as co-creators for the series.

Development for what is being titled Wonder Man is in the early stages, but if things crackle, cameras could be rolling in 2023.

Wonder Man is one of Marvel’s oldest characters, first introduced in 1964 in the pages of Avengers No 9. He was initially a villain and only appeared sporadically in the early Marvel Age, but was reconceived as a hero (and Avenger) in the late 1970s.

In the 1980s, the character really came into his own. Known as Simon Williams, he was a founding member of the Los Angeles-based West Coast Avengers and, with a look that included a turtleneck, a red jacket and sunglasses, became a celebrity thanks to his day job as an actor and stuntman.

The character also developed strong ties to classic (and now, thanks to Marvel movies and an Emmy-winning series, globally known) characters Vision and Wanda/Scarlet Witch. Stories tied him to the android via ionic energy and brainwaves that implied the two were akin to brothers. Wonder Man even developed feelings for Wanda, after Vision had been dismantled.

Takes on the character for the Disney+ series were not revealed. Marvel could steer the character down a Hollywood lane, so far unexplored in the MCU, or it could set him up in the Wanda-Vision lane, something the company has continued to explore with its latest blockbuster, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. There is even a WandaVision spinoff show in development featuring Agatha Harkness, the villain played by Kathryn Hahn.

Marvel has been steadily prolific with its Disney+ series since launching with WandaVision in early 2021. The recently finished streaming Moon Knight is now in Emmy Award campaign mode, while Ms. Marvel is in the middle of its run and generating some of the best reviews of any Marvel show so far. She-Hulk: Attorney at Law is due to hit in August, while the Samuel L. Jackson-let Secret Invasion and Ironheart are on deck after that.

A half-dozen shows are in development beyond that, including a second season of Loki and a new Daredevil series.

In addition to working on Wonder Man, Cretton is developing a sequel to Shang-Chi and recently wrapped directing and executive producing a series adaptation of Gene Luen Yang’s graphic novel American Born Chinese for Disney+.

Guest cut is his teeth in comedy — his credits include shows such as 30 Rock and Marry Me — but he comes with Marvel experience: He was a consulting producer on Hawkeye, the series toplined by Jeremy Renner and Hailee Steinfeld that was known for its fun and light touch to heroics and sidekicks.

Cretton is repped by WME, Pangea, and Goodman Genow. Guest is repped by UTA, Mosaic and McKuin Frankel.

RUMOR: Marvel’s ‘Wonder Man’ Eyeing A Big Name And A 2023 Start

Two months ago a Wonder Man series was confirmed to be in development by The Hollywood Reporter. During Marvel Studios’ panel at San Diego Comic-Con last month, however, the project was not even acknowledged.

While we’re sure to get an official announcement and additional details at D23 next month, one industry insider claims to have some promising new information about the project.

According to Daniel Richtman, the series is eyeing a 2023 start. Unfortunately he couldn’t clarify whether the series would begin filming sooner or later. Because producer Destin Daniel Cretton will probably spend the latter part of the year preparing to film Avengers; Kang’s Dynasty, it would make the most sense for production to begin in the first half of the year.

That’s not all though. Richtman also says that Marvel is looking for a “big name” to fill the role.

For the last few weeks, there have been additional rumors that Henry Golding (Crazy Rich Asians, Snake Eyes: G.I. Joe Origins) could be in the running to play the character. While he is a pretty good actor, personally I don’t think he’s that big of a star (yet). Marvel might feel differently, but truthfully at this point they can get anyone for anything. So it’ll be really interesting to see who ultimately ends up with the role.

As always, because this info has not necessarily been confirmed by a major trade or Marvel Studios, we urge you to take it with a grain of salt.

Now, this won’t technically be Wonder Man’s first planned appearance in the MCU. Originally James Gunn planned to have Nathan Fillion cameo as the character in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2.

Over the course of the first few episodes of WandaVision, there were also Easter eggs that suggested the character might appear. You might even recall that in one interview with the series’ showrunner Jac Schaeffer a blurred out poster of the character appeared in the back. Those all obviously turned out to be (brilliant) red herrings.

For those unfamiliar with the character, his real name is Simon Williams. While he was originally conceived as a villain in the 1960s, he was later reimagined as a hero and went on to be a founding member and key leader of the West Coast Avengers.

Unlike most of the characters in the MCU, Williams does not have any superpowers. Rather, he relies on his swift intellect and combat skills to fight crime. His experience as a former actor and stuntman also help whenever he needs to go undercover for a mission.

Who would you like to see play the character? Sound off below!

Bob Odenkirk’s MCU Debut Reportedly Set For Wonder Man Series

Marvel may have recently found its Wonder Man in Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, but according to a recent report from The Illuminerdi, the studio has its eyes set on another big-named actor for the upcoming series.

According to their recent report, Marvel Studios is eyeing Bob Odenkirk (Breaking Bad, Better Call Saul) for a “special role” in the Wonder Man show. It’s unclear exactly what that role might be, but the report speculates that Odenkirk could be a good fit for Neal Saroyan, who acts as Simon Williams’ agent and manager in the comics. It’s also unclear if Marvel Studios will keep the history of Simon Williams (Wonder Man) as a hero that occasionally acts as a stuntman.

Should Odenkirk be cast as an MCU version of Neal Saroyan, it’s possible that he could be kept around for future projects. In later runs of the Wonder Man comics, Saroyan has also been revealed to be a criminal mastermind in his own right, with psychic powers being put on the character in later stories. It remains to be seen what Marvel Studios plans to do, so fans will have to wait for further confirmation before getting too excited.

Marvel has yet to spill more details on the series, but Ben Kingsley is reprising his role as the washed-up actor Trevor Slattery, who made his debut in Iron Man 3 as a fake version of The Mandarin. He then made a surprise return for Shang-Chi.

Wonder Man is one of the oldest characters in Marvel’s long history and was first introduced in 1964 in an early issue of Avengers. The character – named Simon Williams — was created by Stan Lee, Don Heck, and Jack Kirby and was initially introduced as a supervillain who fought the Avengers.

In the late 1970s, Wonder Man was turned into a hero and eventually ended up joining the Avengers throughout various iterations of the team. Imbued with “ionic” energy by Baron Zemo, Wonder Man has powers similar to other superheroes, including enhanced strength, speed, stamina, durability, reflexes, and agility.

Throughout his appearances in Marvel comics, he’s also had various ties with characters involved heavily in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, including Vision and Wanda Maximoff.

Stella Meghie To Direct Episodes Of ‘Wonder Man’ Starring Yahya Abdul-Mateen II For Disney+

EXCLUSIVE: The Photograph director Stella Meghie has been set to helm episodes of the Marvel Studios/Disney+ series Wonder Man starring Yahya Abdul-Mateen II.

It is believed Meghie will helm multiple episodes for the series along with Daniel Destin Cretton, who also will direct multiple episodes. Andrew Guest is head writer. Cretton also exec produces along with Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige.

Marvel had no comment.

Created by writer Stan Lee and artists Don Heck and Jack Kirby, Wonder Man was introduced to Marvel Comics in 1964 via The Avengers #9. The character otherwise known as Simon Williams is the son of the industrialist Sanford Williams and assumes control of his munitions outfit following his passing, seeing its successes limited when it comes into competition with Tony Stark’s Stark Industries. The younger Williams gains ion-based superpowers, including super strength, while working under the villainous Baron Zemo and establishing himself as an antagonist to The Avengers, though he later decides to become part of that superhero team.

Meghie already had strong ties with Disney as she is exec producing Tiana, a new animated series for Disney+ revolving around the character from the Disney animated pic The Princess and the Frog.

Meghie got her big break following the 2018 Toronto Film Festival premiere of her acclaimed pic The Weekend. The film helped put her on the map of up-and-coming filmmakers and ultimately led to her landing the 2020 Universal pic The Photograph, which she wrote, directed and exec produced. Her debut film was the critical darling Jean of the Joneses, which premiered at SXSW in 2016.

She is repped by CAA, Lighthouse Management and Media and attorney Gordon Bobb.

Marvel Pushes Pause On ‘Thunderbolts’ Production Due To Writers Strike

EXCLUSIVE: Marvel Studios is delaying filming on another upcoming production as Deadline has learned that the studios’ Thunderbolts pic has pushed pause on the upcoming production, which was set to start shooting in three weeks in Atlanta. The crew was notified today and insiders say that the plan is to resume production once the strike has ended.

The move comes after Marvel had also pushed paused on pre-production for its Blade pic, which was expected to shoot in June as well. The studio had also been forced to recently halt production on its TV series Wonder Man, which had been shooting in Los Angeles and had stopped production in recent days. Like Thunderbolts, the plan is to resume production on Wonder Man once strike is over.

While TV has seen more shutdowns since the strike started earlier this month, the film side has seen less productions halts and postponements but longer it goes on, we shall see if more studios choose to hold off on shooting and push productions until the strike has been settled. Last week, the Lionsgate pic Good Fortune decided to stop filming indefinitely because of the strike.
