Exclusive: McG to Direct Disney+ ’Turner & Hooch’ Series; Production Kicking Off in September

We have learned that director McG (The Babysitter) has been tapped to direct an episode of the Disney+ reboot series, Turner & Hooch, which has Josh Peck (Drake and Josh) set to lead. It is unknown if McG will direct the entire series or just an episode.

We have also learned that production on the ten-episode, hourlong series is set to begin on September 22 in Vancouver, Canada, and is expected to wrap in early April 2021.

Like the movie, the series centers on Scott Turner (Peck), who now is a U.S. marshal, versus the police detective played by Tom Hanks in the movie. When the ambitious, buttoned-up marshal inherits a big unruly dog, he soon realizes the pet he didn’t want may be the partner he needs.

The series is also set to star Vanessa Lengies (Glee) as Erica, who is the chief trainer at the U.S. Marshal K-9 facility, Lyndsy Fonseca (Kick-Ass), who plays Laura, Scott Turner’s sister and the mother of 7-year-old Matthew, and Carra Patterson (Straight Outta Compton), Turner’s partner.

Burn Notice creator Matt Nix is developing the series with 20th Century Fox Television where he has an overall deal. Josh Levy (Bones) will co-produce with Nix.

Released in 1989, the original film was a box office hit grossing $71 million on a $13 million budget. The success all spawned an ABC half-hour pilot, produced by Touchstone TV and starring Thomas F. Wilson as Det. Scott Turner and Beasley the Dog reprising his role did not go to series but aired under the ABC’s Wonderful World of Disney banner in July 1990.

Last year, McG, who also directed hit series including Lethal Weapon and Chuck, revealed to Collider that he was working on a True Lies series for Disney+, “So, True Lies at Disney+, which is exciting. I’m writing that one, which is very exciting, because I’m so passionate about that story where you think you know your partner but you don’t.” So could McG’s involvement with Turner & Hooch lead to the streamer greenlighting his True Lies reboot? We will have to wait and see.
