'Aladdin' Spinoff Featuring Prince Anders in the Works at Disney+ (Exclusive)

Billy Magnussen played the scene-stealing part and would reprise his role.
In what marks a whole new world for Disney, the studio is developing its first spinoff from one of its live-action remakes.

Disney has hired Jordan Dunn and Michael Kvamme to pen a script for an Aladdin offshoot centered on Prince Anders, the scene-stealing character played by Billy Magnussen in the live-action film released earlier this year, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.

Magnussen would reprise the part in a feature, which is in early development for Disney+, the company’s newly launched streaming service. The project is not a sequel to Aladdin, which is also in the planning stages at the studio.

Dan Lin and Jonathan Eirich, who produced the billion dollar-grossing Aladdin, are back in the producers' seat via Rideback, their banner. Rideback’s Ryan Halprin will executive produce.

Overdressed and on the dim side, Anders was royalty from a fictional kingdom named Skanland and a suitor for the hand of Princess Jasmine. While only in less than a handful of scenes, as played by Magnussen with a mix of goofiness and haughty idiocy, the character, who was an original creation for the live-action remake, made a fun impression on audiences.

Magnussen had a hand in the project’s inception. He came to the producers with an idea for a story and was involved, along with the studio and Rideback, in meeting with potential writers.

Disney has been pursuing a strategy of remaking its animated classics into live-action versions, a strategy that has, for the most part, paid off handsomely, with Aladdin and The Lion King, both released this summer, the most recent hits. While some have generated sequels, Aladdin is the first live-action remake to spark a spinoff.

Dunn and Kvamme are rising writers who have several comedy projects set up around town including Operation Prince of Freedom, centered on an un-PC celebrity, the Taliban and an alien invitation, set up at Fox. They also wrote the esports project set up at Legendary that has Will Ferrell attached to star. The duo is repped by Verve, Mosaic and Hansen Jacobson.

Magnussen, repped by WME and Anonymous Content, has made a habit of stealing scenes from his stars, with turns in movies such as Game Night, The Big Short and Into the Woods. He will next be seen in next year's James Bond movie, No Time to Die.

Rideback currently has Oscar contender The Two Popes, starring Anthony Hopkins and Jonathan Pryce, in theaters.

Dal sito The Hollywood Reporter:

Billy Magnussen on 'Made for Love' and Pitching His 'Aladdin' Spinoff

The actor also looks at the challenge of playing 'Sopranos' character Paulie in 'The Many Saints of Newark."
This fall, actor Billy Magnussen will see two of his anticipated films open after COVID-19 delays, with The Sopranos prequel The Many Saints of Newark hitting Sept. 24 and James Bond movie No Time to Die out Oct. 21. No matter how rewarding those projects were, his HBO Max series Made for Love was perhaps even more personal for the actor, who spent nearly a year to complete the season when factoring in COVID filming delays.

In Made for Love, Billy Magnussen plays Byron, a tech billionaire who invents a chip he says will make couples closer than ever, but which he uses to spy on his wife, Hazel (Cristin Milioti) after she escapes his fantastical compound, known as The Hub. For Magnussen, Byron turned out to be more nuanced the more he dug into him.

"The shell of it, he is the personification of toxic masculinity. He's grown up in a world where, 'What is it to be a man?' you have to be strong. Controlling, dominate. You have to have the luxuries. You have to be all that stuff," says Magnussen. "While playing him and finding him, you realize that behind that little curtain, he's a scared boy. That's the best part about playing this character."

The little boy elements came out subtly, such as a moment in which Byron was confused belligerent when a journalist compared him to Willy Wonka, a character he's never heard of.

"Byron, who was traumatized at a young age, decided to close off from the world and create his own world, The Hub," says Magnussen. "He's just creating his own reality, constantly. When things don't work as he wants, he has a fit. That [Willy Wonka joke] was discovering the great writing of [showrunner] Christina Lee and [author an executive producer] Alissa Nutting."

In December 2019, news broke that a Disney+ Aladdin spinoff was in the works centering on Prince Anders, the character Magnussen played in the $1 billion grossing live-action remake.

Magnussen had learned that in Hollywood, rarely do opportunities fall into one's lap. That's why he approached Aladdin producers Rideback with the idea to develop a spinoff and pitched it hard. Together, they approached Disney, which has never made a spinoff from one of its live-action remakes.

"They had no thought of doing it. I just didn't want this character to die, because I fell in love with it so much and I saw how much it put a smile on people's faces," says Magnussen.

It's been a slow process, but Magnussen has been spending part of lockdown continuing to develop the script with screenwriters Jordan Dunn, Shane Andries and Chris Smith.

"It's an uphill battle, that's for sure, but it all stems from love and respect and it's a passion project. You see it happen all the time," says the actor, citing Ryan Reynolds' years-long push to get Deadpool made. "No one else was going to pitch this movie except me."

Magnussen had two high-profile films in the can before COVID hit. In No Time to Die he plays a member of the CIA, a role that reunites him with filmmaker Cary Joji Fukunaga, whom the actor worked with on Netflix's Maniac.

"Cary is a workhorse," says Magnussen. "He is a guy that won't finish until it's done and the best idea wins."

For The Many Saints of Newark, Magnussen not only dove into the role of Paulie Gualtieri, the silver wing-tip-haired gangster played by Tony Sirico in the original series, he also dove into The Sopranos for the first time as a viewer.

"I could not afford HBO when The Sopranos was there. I did not watch it," says the actor. "[Creator] David Chase is a legend, of course, and there's the whole legacy of it. I revisited everything once I got the job. It's a very interesting challenge to piggyback off of another actor's performance. And we figured that out."

While Made for Love has not officially been renewed by HBO Max, showrunner Lee has ideas brewing.

"I'm so proud of this," Magnussen says of the show. "This has a bigger presence in my heart than a lot of the projects I've done before."

April 23, 8:05 a.m. Updated to note that writers Shane Andries and Chris Smith are working on the Prince Anders spinoff.

Dal sito The Disinsider:

Upcoming Disney Live-Action Remakes/Adaptations

Cruella is finally in theaters and on Disney+ with Premier Access. The live-action remakes have been a financial goldmine for Disney, so it’s not shocking that studio has many more projects in various stages of production. So let’s look ahead and see what’s to come.

[...]

What else?

Remakes for Bambi, Robin Hood, Sword in the Stone, James and the Giant Peach, and a sequel to 2016’s The Jungle Book are also in various stages of development. Though, I am told these projects are much farther away from beginning than the aforementioned films we’ve listed. The studio is also in development on a Prince Anders film for Disney+, as well as the Gaston and Lefou series, and Mulan spin-offs.

Disney's Aladdin Remake Spinoff Is Coming, Says Billy Magnussen

Exclusive: Billy Magnussen confirms Disney's live-action Aladdin remake spin-off movie is coming as it continues development at the studio.

Billy Magnussen confirms Disney's live-action Aladdin remake spin-off movie is coming as it continues development at the studio. The 2019 film marked the House of Mouse's second adaptation of the tale from One Thousand and One Nights centered on the titular street thief who falls in love with his kingdom's princess, Jasmine, and comes across a magic lamp home to the wish-granting Genie. While trying to impress Jasmine with the powers of the Genie, Aladdin learns of the nefarious plans from the power-hungry sorcerer Jafar and must find a way to save her and their land from Jafar before it's too late.

Mena Massoud led the cast of Aladdin in the titular role alongside Will Smith as the Genie, Naomi Scott as Jasmine, Marwan Kenzari as Jafar, Navid Negahban, Nasim Pedrad, Magnussen and Numan Acar. Helmed by Guy Ritchie on a script he co-wrote with John August, the film received largely mixed reviews from critics, who directed praise towards the cast, production design and music but criticized Ritchie's direction and the CGI. Regardless of the mixed reception, Aladdin became a box office smash upon release, grossing over $1 billion against its $183 million budget, leading to Disney working on multiple follow-ups.

While speaking exclusively with Screen Rant for the home media release of No Time to Die, Billy Magnussen opened up about his live-action Aladdin remake spin-off. The star confirmed that the project is still in development, though kept his lips sealed on what's to come from the film. See what Magnussen said below:

"[Dramatic Laugh] Oh! That's what I got for you. It's coming."

The announcement of the Aladdin remake spin-off centered on Magnussen's Prince Anders has drawn some controversy amongst audiences. Some found the character to be largely forgettable in the live-action remake whilst others found Disney's decision to make a film based on the sole white character to work against the diverse nature of the first film. The latter concern from audiences was a bit minimized when the House of Mouse finally greenlit development on Aladdin 2, though both have largely gone quiet over the past year.

With the ongoing pandemic still affecting blockbuster productions, it's understandable Disney's live-action Aladdin remake spin-off centered on Prince Anders is still taking some time to get off the ground two years after it was first announced to be in the works. However, for those who did fall in love with Magnussen's supporting character, the star's confirmation that development is still underway on the project and that it is coming should be exciting to hear. In the meantime, audiences can catch up with Magnussen's turn in the James Bond franchise with No Time to Die now available on 4K Ultra-HD, Blu-ray and DVD.

Aladdin Star Gives Promising Update On Disney’s Prince Anders Spinoff
Exclusive: Aladdin reboot star Billy Magnussen gives a promising update on the planned Disney+ spinoff featuring his character Prince Anders.
[...]
Exclusive: "It's in development. We are in the stages of rewrites right now, and it's still moving forward. Yeah, it's really exciting ... I loved making that character up, and to have the opportunity to create a world and a story with him in it has really been a treat. I love that. That's what I really love about this industry; to play in such a way like that ... To be the not-Prince-Charming Prince, you know? We always see Prince Charming, so I was like, 'Let's mix it up."

Dal sito The Disinsider:

‘Aladdin’ Spinoff Prince Anders Still in The Works at Disney

The live-action Disney movie everyone has been waiting for, Prince Anders is still in the works.

While speaking with Ash Crossan of Entertainment Tonight, Billy Magnussen revealed that things are still in motion on the 2019 Aladdin spinoff. “We’re still in the works on that, the writers strike and also COVID happening, so a lot of bumbs, but you know working with Rideback Ranch and Disney on Lilo & Stitch is still exciting and fun but yes, Anders is still happening.”

The project, which was announced in 2019, went through rewrites in 2022. Jordan Dunn and Michael Kvamme (Operation Prince of Freedom) wrote the initial script and it is unclear if they are the ones working on the current rewrite. Dan Lin and Jonathan Eirich, who produced the billion dollar-grossing Aladdin, are back in the producers seat via their banner, Rideback. Rideback’s Ryan Halprin will executive produce.

Details are being kept under wraps on the project, but it is said that this is not an Aladdin sequel, which we hear is not in the works but ideas to resurface a spinoff a Genie project is also being discussed, but a spin-off in the same universe. Magnussen had a hand in the project’s inception. He came to the producers with an idea for a story and was involved, along with the studio and Rideback, in meeting with potential writers.

In Disney’s 2019 Aladdin remake, the goofy Prince Anders is a suitor from Skanland and potential husband for Princess Jasmine (Naomi Scott). The character served as a replacement for Prince Achmed from The original movie.
