David Callaham’s Marvel Studios Project Revealed to Be ‘SHANG-CHI’

Just over a month ago, we broke the news that Marvel Studios had hired Wonder Woman 1984 scribe David Callaham to begin developing a screenplay for an unknown project. Today the identity of the project was revealed by the trades and we are thrilled to report that Callaham will be penning the script for a solo Shang-Chi film, bringing the Master of Kung Fu to the MCU. According to the report, the Chinese-American Callaham will work on the story while the studio searches for Asian and Asian-American directors to helm the project and bring the first Asian superhero to the MCU. When we first reported Callaham’s involvement we noted that he had been brought on in early October so it’s unclear how far along the script is and the new report did not indicate that Marvel Studios was near hiring a director, so it’s unlikely that this film will go into production any time soon.

Shang-Chi, born out of the Bruce Lee inspired martial arts madness of the early-70s, first appeared in December 1973’s Special Marvel Edition #15 as the Master of Kung Fu. While his story, like so many others, has been retconned extensively, Shang-Chi is the son of Chinese crime boss (or evil sorcerer) and was raised to be a weapon. Upon learning of his father’s wickedness, Shang-Chi joined MI-6, the British Intelligence agency that had long been working against his father. Shang-Chi headlined his own series, Master of Kung Fu, from 1974-1983, where writer Doug Moench built a much deeper world around the character and created one of Marvel’s most popular and entertaining books of the 70s. Since then, Shang-Chi has worked with the street-level Heroes for Hire like Iron Fist and Luke Cage, been an Avenger and popped in and out of other series. He is considered possibly the best martial artist in the Marvel Universe, having fought Danny Rand to a draw.

It’s almost certain that Marvel Studios views Shang-Chi as a tentpole franchise and not a one-off solo series. In addition to keeping with their promise to improve representation for all cultures going forward, Marvel Studios is also very aware of the huge impact the Chinese box office has made on their films and have been eyeing ways to to continue inroads there for some time. Shang-Chi could easily fill a James Bond role for the studio and the supporting cast offers ample opportunity to assemble a nearly entirely Asian or Asian-American cast.

We’d love to hear your reactions to the news that Shang-Chi, the Master of Kung Fu, is headed to the big screen.

Destin Daniel Cretton To Direct Marvel’s SHANG-CHI

Shang-Chi, Marvel’s first Asian superhero in a lead role, is about to get a Captain Marvel connection. Destin Daniel Cretton, who previously directed Brie Larson in Short Term 12, will helm the upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe film.

The project was announced in December. It will not only be the first to feature an Asian actor in the title role, it will also be the first to consist of a primarily Asian cast. It was also a top priority for the studio to hire an Asian director according to IndieWire. Kevin Feige himself said that diversity has been an important directive for them. It’s a good thing that Marvel was able to follow through. Shang-Chi‘s screenwriter is Asian-American, as well. Dave Callaham’s credits include The Expendables and Wonder Woman 1984. We can safely assume he’s a fan of both action and heroes.

This isn’t the first time that Marvel has picked up an indie (or smaller-scale) director, as Ryan Coogler made the leap from films like Fruitvale Station and Creed to Black Panther and the Captain Marvel team of Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck were busy with television episodes of Billions and The Affair before they took on Carol Danvers. Similarly, Cretton came from directing Short Term 12 and The Glass Castle – both starring Larson. Betting on smaller budget directors for their most recent origin stories seems to have paid off for the studio, and there’s no reason to think this latest endeavor will be any different.

Marvel Brings Shang-Chi to Life

Marvel Comics first created the character of Shang-Chi in 1971, and introduced him s the Master of Kung Fu. Hopefully the film will wash away the bad taste left by both the first season of Iron Fist on Netflix and its recent cancellation. Shang-Chi will have Asian players behind the scenes as well as in front. We don’t yet know whether the movie version will contain the duplication powers that Shang-Chi possesses in certain comics. Notwithstanding, he will certainly have the incredible martial arts skills that he’s best known for.

EXCLUSIVE: Donnie Yen, Ludi Lin On Marvel Studios ‘SHANG-CHI’ Short List

It appears that Marvel Studios has begun its search for Shang-Chi. According to our source, Ludi Lin (Power Rangers, Aquaman and Black Mirror) is among the actors with whom the studio is interested in meeting to discuss the role. Though Lin’s name is the first to emerge, there is no indication at this point that he is a favorite to land the role. In fact, our source tells us that we should expect to hear more names emerge over the next couple of weeks.

in’s career trajectory has led him to this opportunity. He lobbied for the role of Shang-Chi last December. Further, his recent turns in Aquaman and, most recently, Black Mirror Season 5, have gained him notoriety. His desire to lead Marvel Studios’ first Asian-centric superhero film, coupled with his extensive martial arts training have put him on Feige’s radar. It seems that he’ll soon have his chance to impress the man with the plan. We have also heard that one time Disney kid, Ross Butler, may have a chance to sit down with Feige as well.

Marvel Studios began developing SHANG-CHI in early October of 2018 when they hired writer David Callaham to pen the script. At that time, the trades reported that the studio had already begun meeting with Asian directors to helm the project. In March, Destin Cretton inked a deal to direct the project. Later, in early April, the New South Wales government revealed they had an agreement with Marvel Studios to film a major motion picture at Fox Studios. Likewise, over the past month, evidence has continued to mount that film would be SHANG-CHI.

Marvel Begins Casting Search

In late May, I revealed on my podcast that casting for the film had begun. GWW later revealed that Marvel Studios was looking for two Asian actors for the film. One would play a wise, old statesman and one of his deadliest warriors. Just last week, the studio brought Sue Chan on board as the film’s production designer. While I have been unable to confirm it, I have been told that the studio is currently targeting an early-November start of production. Given Marvel Studios known slate of films, it’s possible that SHANG-CHI will take the February 12, 2021 date. That would coincide with the Chinese/Lunar New Year.

Could Donnie Yen Be in Shang-Chi?

Additionally, our source indicated to us that Marvel Studios hoped to meet with Donnie Yen for an as yet unidentified role, confirming prior reports. Yen is an icon in Hong Kong. His inclusion in the film would be be chalked up as a huge win for the project. Of course, the role Marvel Studios has in mind for him is being kept under wraps. Nevertheless, Yen certainly fits the description of the “wise, old statesman” mentioned above. (Many fans believe that role to belong to the Mandarin).

Marvel Studios hasn’t officially revealed its post-Infinity Saga MCU slate. Notwithstanding, Kevin Feige has spoken publicly about SHANG-CHI and its importance. It is expected that it we’ll get some kind of official announcement at either SDCC or D23. Stay tuned to That Hashtag Show for more on this story as it develops.
