BAZ BAMIGBOYE: Lily's super-cool Cinders is going to have a ball

Cinderella, as embodied by Downton Abbey star Lily James in a blockbuster new movie version, is no victim. She’s equal to any man, according to director Kenneth Branagh.

‘We wanted it not to be the film where a girl waits for a man to come along before she can be happy. She’s happy inside before he comes along,’ Branagh told me.

Disney’s epic version of the Cinders story opens on March 27, with Lily in the central role and Richard Madden as the Prince who falls in love with her when they dance at a ball.

‘Our Cinderella isn’t afraid of the love and romance between them — but she’s an equal in it,’ Branagh explained.

When I visited the set during filming, Lily told me that Cinderella had a superpower. ‘It’s something inside her,’ the actress teased.

What could it be, I wondered? ‘It’s goodness,’ she said.

‘Good can also equal smart, funny and happy,’ Branagh agreed later. ‘Goodness is not about being pretty, precious, self-righteous, holier than thou. Lily as Cinderella makes goodness cool.’

The actor-director was speaking to me from Sweden, where he’s filming the last three of 12 full-length Wallander detective dramas.

He said he, too, saw goodness as the ‘ultimate superpower’, able to outdo the more deliberate manipulations of Cate Blanchett’s character, Cinderella’s stepmother Lady Tremaine.

Branagh said that Cinderella’s step-family — which also features Holliday Grainger and Sophie McShera (Lily’s co-star from Downton) as the step-sisters — are not the pantomime villains usually associated with this fairy tale.

‘Cate Blanchett!’ he said. ‘Once you have her, you already know that you’re moving away from the one-dimensional, the two-dimensional . . . and you’re into the multi-dimensional. She’s an absolute thoroughbred as an artist. She has a skill level just off the charts.’

He added that one of the reasons Lily was cast was because they felt she’d be able to hold her own against Blanchett and Helena Bonham Carter, the fairy godmother. Three-time Oscar-winning designer Dante Ferretti created the extraordinary sets and Sandy Powell, who also has an Oscar hat trick, designed the awesome costumes.

I went out to Pinewood when Branagh was filming the ball dance sequences, with choreographer Rob Ashford overseeing what seemed like 1,001 dancers and extras. It was one of the most magnificent scenes I’ve ever witnessed on a film set, a taste of which can be seen in the trailer being released on Wednesday.

Every single crew member and visitor watched as though hypnotised as the massive ensemble moved, almost as one, to a waltz composed by Patrick Doyle — commissioned to write a score that had ‘a great emphasis on romance, sparkle and magic’.

It was magic, that’s for sure.

il Trailer è assolutamente meraviglioso.
Colori, costumi, effetti, attori. Bellezza e perfezione artistica. Uno spettacolo, indubbiamente.

Ma la cosa finisce là eh... è identico al classico e non sembra accennare ad alcun tipo di twist.Cosa aggiunge a quanto già conosciamo?

Stando a quanto visto, i detrattori di Maleficent lo adoreranno.

Quello che mi sono chiesto, mi sono rivisto Cenerentola di Walt Disney in 2 Minuti..... Forse tengono nascoste le "novità" puntando sul già visto... bho...

Esatto, è la stessa cosa che mi sono detto anche io... Questo trailer serve solo a far crescere l'hype, come quello di Maleficent in cui lo si accostava al classico.
Sono sicuro che, a causa di numero commenti "negativi" che il trailer sta ricevendo, la Disney tra un paio di mesi rilascerà un trailer con le "novità".

Questo infatti è un altro raffianotto trailer Disney volto a sbattere in faccia tutti i riferimenti al classico (come fecero con Maleficent del resto). Tuttavia con Maleficent, il twist, era evidente. Qui no. Ma c'è da dire che in qualche modo dovranno occupare i 100 minuti del film. E avendo eliminato tutta la sottotrama con Lucifero e i topini, qualcosa di "diverso" è lecito aspettarselo.

Vedremo. Per adesso concordiamo tutti sul meraviglioso lavoro di scenografie ad opera del nostro mitico duo Dante Ferretti e Francesca Lo Schiavo.

Ahaha è la prima cosa che ho detto vedendo il trailer! Ho riconosciuto prima la voce ancor prima di vederlo!

Comunque a me non frega nulla se ci sono elementi nuovi o meno..a me basta che sia ben fatto per vedere una bella versione formato film.. se devono fare caga*e come Maleficient meglio che lo facciano pari pari al classico XD
Comunque mi sembra davvero bello da un punto di vista visivo, lo attenderò con impazienza!

No, a parte gli scherzi, come hai detto tu il film non può essere un semplice rifacimento Disney.... Dal trailer, presumo che si approfondirà anche il rapporto tra Cenerentola e la madre.

Assolutamente!!!!! La cosa che mi ha fatto venire voglia di correre al cinema a vederlo ORA! Visivamente, e non vorrei esagerare, è da Oscar! XXD Non vedo letteralmente ora che esca....
Anche Lily James, innondata di critiche, la trovo azzeccata per la parte. E, da quel poco che ho visto dal trailer, anche da un punto di vista recitativo la trovo molto valida. Però non so. Non la conosco, e nn l'ho mai vista in "scena"....Ma ha un sorriso che....

Trailer stupendo!

Sinceramente non mi aspetto un modo nuovo di raccontare Cenerentola e non mi aspetto originalità. Mi aspetto un bel film che mi trasporti in un mondo fiabesco e magico. E secondo me in questo starà la forza di questa pellicola.

Bellissimo il trailer! Assolutamente meraviglioso!
Lily James è bellissima come Cenerentola.
Cate Blanchett si prospetta una grande matrigna cattiva.

Il film ricorda molto il Classico Disney, ma in certi aspetti ricorda anche La Scarpetta di Vetro, La Leggenda di un Amore e perfino il film cecoslovacco-tedesco Cenerentola della Omnia Film con l'inizio in un ambiente bucolico, con Cenerentola nei campi con la mamma! Bello! Molto molto bello!

Ma avete visto Lucifero e i topolini???
La carrozza tutta d'oro è spettacolare.
Bello anche il Castello, completamente differente da quello del Classico.

Oscar-winning costume designer Sandy Powell reinvents the glass-slipper splendor of Cinderella.

There’s a mysterious alchemy at work in the best costume design for film, a secret marriage uniting clothing, character, and a director’s vision. Who would Judy Garland’s Dorothy be without her blue gingham pinafore (Innocence!) and red sequined slippers (Temptation!), or Jean Harlow without her liquid satin gowns? (Both women’s looks were created by Adrian, the wardrobe king of Hollywood’s Golden Age.) Audrey Hepburn’s ethereal lightness was magnified a hundredfold by Hubert de Givenchy’s chiffon confections, while ice princess Catherine Deneuve discovered a deep vein of perversity within her thanks to Yves Saint Laurent’s costumes for Belle de Jour.

“The bad guy is always the most fun to dress,” admits three-time Oscar-winning costume designer Sandy Powell. “And the good, kind person is always the most challenging.” Disney’s live-action Cinderella, directed by Kenneth Branagh and due out in March, gave her plenty of room to stretch in both directions. Lily James (Lady Rose of Downton Abbey) stars as the ultimate little girl’s fantasy figure, while an elaborately skirted Cate Blanchett channels Joan Crawford as Cinderella’s evil stepmother.

For Blanchett, whom Powell has dressed in three films (including Todd Haynes’s Carol, also to be released next year), the designer’s costumes play a key role in preparations. “To be in dialogue with Sandy instantly makes an actor’s internal work become more active and purposeful,” she says. “She invites grace, chutzpah, and irreverence, and one’s performance must rise to the occasion.”

Though the fairy tale is timeless, Powell was aiming for the look of “a nineteenth-century period film made in the 1940s or ’50s,” she says. Cinderella’s stepsisters sport the yellow and pink of 1950s sorority sisters. “They are meant to be totally ridiculous on the outside—a bit too much and overdone—and ugly on the inside,” Powell says. Dressing Cinderella herself, meanwhile, required a subtle rethinking of the tale’s traditional iconography. “I didn’t want her in rags, as she is often portrayed in the storybooks,” Powell explained. “What I gave her instead is a dress that starts out pretty and ends up looking faded, tired, and worn out.”

The film marks something of a departure for Powell, who earned her chops designing for the likes of fellow Brits Derek Jarman (Caravaggio) and Sally Potter (Orlando) and whose costumes combine her deep knowledge of historical dress with the wild inventiveness of an outsider artist. She grew up surrounded by the vibrant colors of the large West Indian communities in Brixton, the South London neighborhood where she still lives. Textiles she finds in fabric shops there make their way into her work, alongside expensive Italian silks.
As for the Dress—the magical raiment that arrives courtesy of Cinderella’s scatterbrained fairy godmother (Helena Bonham Carter) on the eve of the royal ball—it’s a cerulean gown with a voluminous skirt composed of more than a dozen layers of gossamer-fine silk in different shades of pale blue, turquoise, and lavender. “When I first put it on, I felt both empowered and scared,” James recalls. “How could I live up to this? Then I realized I could use that fear to show me how Cinderella would feel at that moment.”

Cinderella’s signature slipper, meanwhile, is made of crystal, designed in collaboration with Swarovski, and based upon a shoe from the 1890s that Powell found in a museum in Northampton. That shoe had a five-inch heel and no platform. “So besides the fact that Cinderella’s slipper is crystal, the shape of the last makes it impossible to walk in,” Powell says. “I was amazed that I was allowed to do it—that nobody wondered how they were going to reproduce it for children. But then,” she muses, “I guess the glass slipper is the ultimate fetish shoe, isn’t it?”

Povero lucifero al gunzaglio... oltretutto è un bellissimo gatto dal vivo, spero che non gli facciano fare una brutta fine.

Cenerentola è bellissima... e noto che c'è anche l'abito rosa, anche se mi pare di aver capito che non sarà rovinato molto, e sembra che ci sarà una splendida trasformazione dell'abito...oltretutto l'abito rosa sembra quello della versione teatrale "cercasi cenerentola"...

Dopo il trailer di quella porcheria di "Maleficent", che lo faceva sembrare tutt'altro rispetto alla spazzatura che si è rivelato, tengo a freno, e di molto, il mio entusiasmo per non incappare nella solita delusione firmata Disney Però di sicuro come trailer è molto bello, per lo meno visivamente E l'essersi mantenuto fedele alla storia, quella revisionata a suo tempo per il Classico, per me è un punto in più: sinceramente di "svolte" e di novità non ne sento il bisogno, un remake live passo passo per me è la cosa più fantastica ... il risultato artistico con quell'altra robaccia con la Jolie, che ha voluto "ampliare" un qualcosa che era già perfetto di suo, l'abbiamo visto com'è andato a finire Speriamo solo non saltino fuori sorprese, tipo l'ennesima pacchianata della matrigna cattiva per finta o per un qualche trauma infantile
