Da New York Times:

The Man Reimagining Disney Classics for Today’s World

[...]

“Mufasa: The Lion King,” a photorealistic prequel directed by Barry Jenkins, the Oscar-winning “Moonlight” screenwriter, is scheduled for release in 2024. Mr. Bailey said “The Lion King” could expand into “a big, epic saga” like the “Star Wars” franchise. “There’s a lot of room to run if we can find the stories,” he said.

[...]

Traduzione:

Ecco alcuni commenti:

Da Twitter:

Unfolding Cine @Cineunfold:

I been told that Mufasa: The Lion King prequel is actually good but that there are lot of problems with it from a production standpoint

The third act feels rushed but there’s enough time for them to fix it

Da Twitter:

V Scooper @thevscooper:

The 'MUFASA' project didn't convinced me much, but I've been hearing very good things, such as the narrative and story being excellent (visually too), even better than The Lion King. I've heard that there are many other projects in this universe in the works. Ok then? Cook

Dal sito The Disinsider:

Mufasa: The Lion King

The Lion King dominated at the box office in 2019 and Jon Favreau is handing the directing reigns to esteemed filmmaker Barry Jenkins. Mufasa: The Lion King is intended to be the live-action styled photorealistic computer-animated prequel to the similarly created 2019 remake of The Lion King (1994).Seth Rogen, Billy Eichner, and John Kani reprise their character roles from the remake, and are joined by Aaron Pierre and Kelvin Harrison Jr., who voice their young versions of Mufasa and Scar.

Reports indicated that the project would have a story centered on Mufasa during his formative years, with additional scenes focusing on the events after the first film; comparing the movie to a similar structure as The Godfather Part II. The film will not be a remake of The Lion King II: Simba’s Pride, the direct-to-video sequel to the original animated film.

We were lucky enough to see during the D23 Expo in 2022, which revealed that Mufasa was an orphaned cub. The preview also revealed that Rafiki and Timon will tell stories about Mufasa’s past and his way to becoming king.

'The Lion King' Prequel Will Feature a Mufasa Before He “Discovers His Rhythm”

Aaron Pierre spoke about voicing the titular Lion King and drawing inspiration from James Earl Jones in the latest episode of Collider Forces.

- Aaron Pierre will bring a different side of Mufasa to the live-action prequel of The Lion King, exploring the character's younger years and his journey to becoming king.
- Pierre acknowledges James Earl Jones as a major inspiration but sees this as an opportunity to portray Mufasa in a different capacity with his own unique interpretation.
- The film will feature familiar faces from the 2019 remake, including Seth Rogen, Billy Eichner, and John Kani, and will explore the origins of the villain Scar.

As the star of Disney's live-action prequel Mufasa: The Lion King, Aaron Pierre has some big shoes to fill. The titular lion, known for his benevolence and wisdom he bestowed on young Simba, was twice played by the great James Earl Jones in both the original animated The Lion King and its 2019 live-action remake. With his booming voice, he gave the former Lion King an air of power and confidence with a caring side for his son who would one day take his place, making the character one of his most memorable in a long career full of iconic performances. Pierre isn't necessarily trying to replicate Jones's take on the patriarch of Pride Rock, however.

In an episode of Collider Forces with Perri Nemiroff shot at the Collider studio at Sundance (brought to you by Film.io) for the upcoming television series Genius: MLK/X, Pierre explained that he'll try to capture a different side of Mufasa than Jones with the film. Mufasa: The Lion King will show the character's younger years before Simba was born, and before he was firmly established as the king. While details of the plot are scarce, director Barry Jenkins previously teased that the story will show that Mufasa wasn't a natural leader, but instead grew into his role with experience ruling over the Pride Lands and a little help from those around him. Having a new voice for the mighty lion, then, felt like a natural fit for this previous era of his life, even though Pierre still saw Jones as a massive inspiration:

"Well, first and foremost, I want to acknowledge that James Earl Jones is an enormous inspiration of mine. Massively. And I feel very honored to be walking into this role after him. I think the key difference will be that here we're exploring Mufasa in a different capacity. When Sir James Earl Jones portrayed him, this is Mufasa in his full capacity, in his rhythm, and I think here we're exploring Mufasa prior to that point. What does this young lion look like before he is who we know him as, and he is discovering his rhythm, how he conducts himself, how he engages with his community and his loved ones? So, I think that's the key thing. It's figuring it out."

'Mufasa: The Lion King' Features Some Serious Star Power

Pierre has been rising through the industry fast, previously appearing in SyFy's DC series Krypton and M. Night Shyamalan's Old. He's coming off a recent turn opposite Saoirse Ronan and Paul Mescal in Garth Davis's sci-fi thriller from last year, Foe, and will next be seen embodying controversial civil rights figure Malcolm X in the aforementioned Genius: MLK/X. This will be Pierre's first voice role, but he'll at least be in familiar company with his The Underground Railroad director Jenkins at the helm. It's no small feat to succeed a legend like Jones, but he seems more than up to the task of delivering a voice that both honors and breaks away from that iconic performance.

Alongside Pierre, the film will feature plenty of familiar faces for Lion King fans, as several of the cast members are returning from the remake. Mufasa will see Billy Eichner and Seth Rogen reprise their roles as the dynamic duo of Timon and Pumba while John Kani returns as Rafiki. Succeeding Chiwetel Ejiofor and Jeremy Irons as Scar opposite Pierre is his Genius co-star Kelvin Harrison Jr., who will play a version of the vicious antagonist named Taka before he ever donned his sinister name. Aside from the cast, Jeff Nathanson is also back to pen the screenplay.

Due to delays from the SAG-AFTRA strike, Mufasa: The Lion King will arrive in time for the holiday season on December 20. Stay tuned here at Collider for more on the live-action prequel as it nears and check out our guide here to keep up to date on everything you need to know.

Dal sito The Hollywood Reporter:

Disney Shares ‘Mufasa: The Lion King’ First Teaser Trailer With Theater Owners

Barry Jenkins is directing the follow-up to the 2019 box office blockbuster 'The Lion King.'

Mufasa: The Lion King is coming out of the shadows and beginning to practice its roar.

On Tuesday, Disney and director Barry Jenkins played the movie’s first teaser trailer for theater owners gathered together this week in Las Vegas for CinemaCon. The teaser received a resounding round of applause for its stunning visuals and tone, and will be released in the coming weeks.

“It’s an expansive adventure,” said Jenkins when taking the stage.

The curiosity factor is running high when it comes to Mufasa. The music-infused film is an origin story and follow-up to Jon Favreau’s 2019 photorealistic movie The Lion King, which in turn was based on the 1994 Disney animated classic. “The film features the same immersive, photoreal environment that wowed audiences the first time,” said Disney global distribution president Tony Chambers.

Favreau’s version grossed a massive $1.7 billion at the global box office to become the top-grossing Disney-branded film in history and is the crown jewel among Disney’s live-action reimaginings. (It did draw scrutiny for its photorealistic style, with some saying it should be labeled animation and not live-action).

Jenkins’ film explores the background and journey of Mufasa, who grew up to be a powerful and compassionate ruler — he was also Simba’s father — after overcoming being an orphan who had to navigate the world. The teaser hints at these themes and shows a young cub who will embark on a journey across Africa.

“Audiences can expect so many things in this film — an epic story and a comedy with plenty of familiar faces. There are some absolutely hilarious moments and some with extreme gravitas,” said Jenkins, adding that there will be all new songs. “They’re handcuffing me, so I can’t tell you who made those songs, but I promise you the songs are absolutely amazing.”

The filmmaker, who has often talked about growing up poor, says making the movie was an intensely personal experience. When he was a young teenager, he lived with his sister, who was a single mother with two sons. When he’d babysit, he’d pop in a movie. He says he must have watched the 1994 Lion King 200 times with his nephews, and that the movie’s message of community and hope were therapeutic.

“And so when the script for Mufasa: The Lion King came across my desk, I was reminded of watching these two very young people deal with very complex emotions in a way that I felt they were very cared for,” Jenkins said. “This film explores Mufasa’s rise to become the iconic king that we all know. And yet what I love about it is that it’s so full of heart and it helps all these kids, like these same kids that I helped raise.”

The sequel, which hits theaters Dec. 20, follows the rise of Mufasa and features a younger version of the character. It also reveals the younger versions of the characters Timon, Pumbaa and Rafiki. Billy Eichner and Seth Rogen will return as Timon and Pumbaa, respectively.

Newcomers include Aaron Pierre, who voices the titular role, and Kelvin Harrison Jr., who voices the devilish character Scar.

Jenkins conceded it was an odd situation to go from making indie movies — his film Moonlight won the Oscar for best picture — to a huge studio tentpole. “It is one of the best decisions I’ve ever made in my life,” he confessed to exhibitors.

Disney was the final studio to present at CinemaCon, and showed more footage than any of its rivals, including 30 minutes of Pixar’s Inside Out 2, around 14 minutes of Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes and nine minutes of Deadpool & Wolverine, which is the first R-rated film released by Disney, among other footage (Moana included).

The strategy paid off. Disney’s session collectively drew the most applause and laughter of the week. And, thanks to Deadpool, it was also the only presentation of the week to include a number of F-bombs from executives and filmmakers who were happy to break from tradition and use the F-bomb to emphasize how strongly they believe in their movies after the word was first used by Marvel chief Kevin Feige when introducing the Deadpool footage. Then again, what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas, and don’t expect a torrent of F-bombs like that again.

Dal sito The Walt Disney Company:

From ‘Deadpool’ to ‘Mufasa’: The Walt Disney Studios Rolls Out Its Robust Slate of New Releases

A new kingdom. Some new feelings. The return of an Oscar®-winning duo. A swearing Super Hero and his clawed companion. Silent screams in space. The return to Motunui. And the origins of a lionized king.

That’s just some of what moviegoers can expect as The Walt Disney Studios rolled out its 2024 theatrical film slate at CinemaCon in Las Vegas on Thursday.

The 2024 releases represent an eclectic group of films from across Disney’s blockbuster brands with franchise films from Marvel Studios, Walt Disney Animation, 20th Century Studios, Pixar, and more. It’s also an example of the company’s ongoing effort to deliver creativity and excellence from its film studios.

“The upcoming lineup from our studio is incredibly exciting,” Alan Bergman, Disney Entertainment Co-Chairman, said. “With a mix of established franchises and fresh stories, there’s something for everyone and we look forward to serving up a variety of films that deliver a steady flow of exceptional cinematic events to theaters.”

This year’s slate follows a 2023 that saw Disney bring in nearly $5 billion at the global box office. That includes $1.9 billion domestically across 17 titles. Acclaim also followed financial success last year as Disney led the industry with 20 Oscar® nominations, including five wins.

Now, 2024 is shaping up to be a great year. Here’s some of what Disney is bringing to a theater near you this year:

Mufasa: The Lion King

December 20

The popularity of The Lion King has spanned generations and now audiences will be able to see the origin story of the king himself, Mufasa, this holiday season.

Directed by Oscar-winning filmmaker, Barry Jenkins, Mufasa: The Lion King will explore the story of how Mufasa became one of the greatest kings of the Pride Lands.

The prequel continues the tradition of the original 1994 movie and follows the cinematic style of 2019’s The Lion King, which made $1.6 billion at the global box office. The innovative approach blends live-action filmmaking techniques with photoreal computer-generated imagery.

Dal sito DeadLine:

‘Mufasa: The Lion King’ Trailer Shows Origin Tale Of Big Cat “Born Without A Drop Of Nobility In His Blood” – CinemaCon

Director Barry Jenkins appeared at his first CinemaCon on Thursday to show off a trailer from Mufasa: The Lion King.

How did an arthouse director and Moonlight Oscar winner take on a four-quadrant movie? He wondered about that himself for a minute, he said, but he told the crowd that he’s seen the original 1994 movie 200 times with his nieces and nephews.

“When the script came to me, I was fascinated by watching these complex people dealing with complex emotions,” Jenkins told attendees at Caesars Palace Colosseum. “This film explores Mufasa’s rise to become the heroic king that we know.”

The fruit doesn’t fall far from the tree, and we see that Papa isn’t that different from Simba, running free in the pride, jumping on hippos and escaping crocodiles. As is par for life in the plains, there’s another pack of lions who are squaring off with Mufasa. Also returning is Zazu and Rifiki.

Says Rifiki in the voice-over, “This is the story of a lion who as born without a drop of nobility in his blood.”

This is the follow-up to Jon Favreau’s 2019 blockbuster The Lion King, which grossed nearly $1.7 billion worldwide . And like that film, it looks like it stars real animals — the CGI is that good. Jenkins helms off a script by Jeff Nathanson.

The film continues with the photo-realistic technology that Favreau used in the 2019 film and 2016’s The Jungle Book.

The logline: Simba, having become king of the Pride Lands, is determined for his cub to follow in his paw prints while the origins of his late father Mufasa are explored.

Cast include Aaron Pierre, Kelvin Harrison Jr, Seth Rogen and Billy Eichner. Jenkins’ Pastel partners Adele Romanski and Mark Ceryak are producing with Disney.

The film’s global release begins December 20.

Dal sito Variety:

‘Lion King’ Prequel ‘Mufasa’ Debuts Majestic CinemaCon Trailer Filled With Stampeding Animals and Dazzling Sahara Setting

Disney is welcoming the king of the Pride Lands back to Las Vegas. The studio unveiled a stirring, all-new trailer of “Mufasa: The Lion King” on Thursday at CinemaCon, the annual convention for movie theater owners.

“Mufasa: The Lion King” is expected to focus on the early years of the eventual ruler of the animals, as well as his menacing younger brother Scar. The film will feature the voices of Aaron Pierre and Kelvin Harrison Jr. as the younger version of Mufasa (voiced by James Earl Jones in the 1994 film and 2019 remake) and Scar (voiced by Jeremy Irons in the 1994 version and Chiwetel Ejiofor in the 2019 remake).

The brief but majestic footage, which isn’t yet available to the public, explores the same stunningly realistic African savannah as its predecessor and begins with the iconic “Lion King” overture. A young Mufasa is seen leaping over rhinos and all kinds of jungle creatures as a voiceover from Rafiki sets the scene for a story about “a lion who was born without a drop of nobility in its blood… a lion who would change our lives forever… a lion who will shape our destiny.”

The movie takes place before the events of the studio’s 2019 photorealistic reimagining, rather than the 1994 cartoon. According to the official logline, “Mufasa” returns to the African savanna as Rafiki tells the Kiara, who is the daughter of Simba and Nala, the story of her grandfather. Billy Eichner and Seth Rogen’s Timon and Pumbaa (whose scene-stealing antics were a highlight of the remake) help to narrate the prequel — although they weren’t featured in Thursday’s clip.

“Mufasa” is slated to release in theaters on Dec. 20 and could be the “mane” event of the holidays. But Disney’s recent box office misfortunes signal that brand familiarity isn’t enough to get families to theaters. It will help if the prequel can deliver on tunes as catchy as “Hakuna Matata” and “I Just Can’t Wait to Be King.” Director Barry Jenkins traveled to Las Vegas to introduce the first-look footage and teased that “Mufasa” will feature new music. However, he stopped short of revealing any details about what it’ll sound like.

“They are handcuffing me,” Jenkins joked on stage at Caesars Palace. “I can’t tell you who made those new songs, but they are absolutely amazing.”

“The Lion King” prequel has big pawprints to fill. The 2019 remake, directed by Jon Favreau, powered to a staggering $1.66 billion globally despite mixed reviews. “The Lion King” was one of seven Disney films to cross the billion-dollar mark that year. Since the pandemic, though, only six films in total have notched that coveted benchmark.

Jenkins is taking over filmmaking duties on “Mufasa,” following the Oscar-winning “Moonlight” and “If Beale Street Could Talk.” Those movies carried much smaller budgets, leading Jenkins to joke about straying from his indie roots to make the “Lion King” prequel.

“You are probably wondering… what is the director of ‘Moonlight’ doing talking to me about an eight-quadrant tentpole legacy IP massive film?” he cracked to the room of movie theater owners. “And I gotta say, the thought was very strange to me at first, as well. But oh my god. It was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made in my life, and I’m so glad I made this picture.”

Disney also offered extensive looks at Pixar’s “Inside Out 2,” Marvel’s “Deadpool & Wolverine” and “Moana 2” as part of its hours-long presentation to theater owners at CinemaCon.

“This story begins far beyond the mountain and the shadows on the other side of the light,” a narrator says in the trailer. “A lion was born without a drop of nobility in his blood, a lion who would change our lives forever.”

Dal sito / Film:

And then there was the exclusive footage. It opens on a stunning vista of mountains shrouded in ice and snow, before cutting to Rafiki's familiar-looking tree as the wise mandrill provides the voiceover narration to set up the teaser. "A lion was born without a drop of nobility in his blood," we hear over images of animals on the vast African plains and, finally, the man lion cub of the hour: young Mufasa himself. This segues into a shot of the eventual king gazing up at the clouds, which forms a lion's face much like Simba sees in the original movie years later.

Dal sito Laughing Place:

The footage looked exactly like the 2019 film. Shots of lions on snowcapped mountains were the most visually different from the first film, while young Mufasa and Scar look a lot like young Simba, and a sequence of the cubs jumping on the backs of hippos in a river looked like it was plucked directly out of the “I Just Can’t Wait to Be King” sequence. Footage also showed an elephant stampede, a moment that likely gives Scar his future idea for the wildebeest stampede that kills Mufasa. Music-wise, the footage was set to a song that included elements of “Circle of Life,” but definitely wasn’t a remake (like “Cold Heart” compared to “Rocket Man”). Barry Jenkins teased that other characters from The Lion King are in the film, and the footage also depicted younger versions of Rafiki and Zazu, plus Timon and Pumbaa.
