Da Hollywood Reporter:

Lasse Hallstrom to Direct Live-Action 'Nutcracker' for Disney

Mark Gordon is producing the live-action project, which has a script by Ashleigh Powell.

Lasse Hallstrom is on board to direct a new big-screen version of The Nutcracker.

Disney Studios is developing the project, titled The Nutcracker and the Four Realms, which adapts the classic ballet by Peter Tchaikovsky and the accompanying story by E.T.A. Hoffmann, The Nutcracker and the Mouse King.

The classic story told of a young girl named Clara who receives a nutcracker doll from her godfather on Christmas Eve. When she goes to check on it later that night, the clock strikes midnight, and she finds herself thrust into a fantastical world where she is in the middle of a war between gingerbread soldiers and an army of mice.

Mark Gordon is producing the live-action project, which has a script by Ashleigh Powell. Powell spent two years developing the script, with Disney quietly picking it up in a competitive situation last year.

Lindy Goldstein is executive producing.

Sam Dickerman and Allison Erlikhman are overseeing the project for Disney. Sara Smith is overseeing for The Mark Gordon Co.

Live-action reimaginings of The Nutcracker have tried to get off the ground before. Universal was developing one with Planet of the Apes producer Chernin Entertainment, while New Line had one with Temple Hill, the company behind Twilight. Both have been dormant for years.

Powell broke out onto the screenwriting scene in 2012 with her Black List script Somacell, now set up at Warners with David S. Goyer producing. She currently is developing the New York Times best-selling sci-fi book The Traveler at Syfy.

A three-time Oscar nominee, Hallstrom most recently was nominated for 1999’s The Cider House Rules. He directed Leonardo DiCaprio in 1993’s What’s Eating Gilbert Grape, leading to the actor's first Oscar nomination.

Hallstrom last directed 2014’s The Hundred-Foot Journey and next up has DreamWorks’ canine drama A Dog’s Purpose, with Britt Robertson and Dennis Quaid starring.

Hallstrom is repped by UTA. Powell is repped by Gersh and BenderSpink.

Dal sito Hollywood Reporter:

The dates claimed by Disney are July 28, 2017 (instead of Dec. 22, 2017); April 6, 2018; Aug. 3, 2018; Dec. 25, 2018; and Dec. 20, 2019. That's in addition to two dates the studio has already claimed for untitled live-action fairy tales — Nov. 2, 2018, and Nov. 8, 2019 — meaning there will be four such films in 2018 alone.

[...]

Director Lasse Hallstrom's The Nutcracker and the Four Realms is another priority.

The Nutcracker and the Four Realms is whatever it is, but I’m guessing it won’t follow the lead of The Nutcracker 3D by turning the story into a giant Holocaust parable. Nor will it gross $16 million worldwide on a $90m budget. Fun fact: That was my daughter’s first press screening. It seemed like a good test run since I figured I could play catch-up (and my wife would still get some rest) if she didn’t make it. She made it through the whole movie, John Turturro as Jonathan Pryce as Hitler and all, and left the theater with a big grin on her face like she knew what a big favor she had done for her mother and me by tagging along.

Dal sito The Knowledge Online:

Disney’s Nutcracker to film in UK

In the week that we brought you news of Cruella coming to these shores, we can now confirm that another live-action blockbuster in the Disney canon, The Nutcracker and the Four Realms, will be setting up to film in the UK later this year.

Based on the E T A Hoffman book that inspired Tchaikovsky’s famous ballet, the new feature version will be directed by Lasse Hallstrom (The Hundred Foot Journey, Salmon Fishing in the Yemen, Chocolat) from a screenplay by Ashleigh Powell. Mark Gordon produces with Disney.

Filming dates are not yet locked down, but PI subscribers will see the loose schedule when they log in to follow the project which will be on our site from 14 May. A studio has been confirmed which we will detail a little further down the line, along with crucial UK hires and shoot dates. Some names are already listed on our site, so take a look from 14 May for details.

The new Disney adaptation is more closely based on the original book than the ballet – the latter has become a hugely popular seasonal rites-of-passage in the US – and centres on a little girl whose favourite Christmas toy, the Nutcracker, comes alive.

Non-subscribers to Production Intelligence can request a free demo here, during which they will be shown remotely around the site.

Da Variety:

Misty Copeland Joins Disney’s ‘Nutcracker’ Movie

Misty Copeland is joining Disney’s “Nutcracker” movie project and will play the lead ballerina role in the sole dance sequence in the film.

She made the announcement via her Instagram account.

“I’m thrilled to be a part of this amazing project with Disney and the wonderful Lasse Hallstrom,” she wrote.

The live action project is titled “The Nutcracker and the Four Realms.” The project is based on the 1816 story “The Nutcracker and the Mouse King” by E.T.A. Hoffmann in which a young girl is charged by her parents with taking care of a Christmas toy Nutcracker doll which comes to life and defeats an evil Mouse King with seven heads.

Russian composer Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky and choreographers Marius Petipa and Lev Ivanov turned Alexandre Dumas adaptation of the story into the ballet “The Nutcracker” in 1892.

Lasse Hallström came on board the movie project in March to direct from Ashleigh Powell’s script.

Mark Gordon is producing. Lindy Goldstein is executive producing. Gordon’s credits include “Saving Private Ryan,” “2012,” “Steve Jobs” and the upcoming “War Dogs.”

Sam Dickerman and Allison Erlikhman are overseeing the project for Disney. Sara Smith is overseeing for The Mark Gordon Company.

Copeland became the first African American woman to be the principal dancer for the American Ballet Theatre last year. New Line is developing a Copeland biopic “Life In Motion: An Unlikely Ballerina” with “Remember the Titans” writer Gregory Howard attached to adapt her memoir.

Copeland was the subject of the 2015 documentary “A Ballerina’s Tale.” She is repped by Paradigm, Square Media and Del Shaw.

Casting call for lead role in new Disney feature film

Lucy Bevan Casting are looking for the young lead role in Disney's 'The Nutcracker', which is due to shoot in the Autumn 2016. Lasse Hallström ('Chocolat', 'The Hundred-Foot Journey', 'What's Eating Gilbert Grape’)is directing, and Mark Gordon and Lindy Goldstein are producing.

Summary:

Set in the 1850s in Victorian England, the film is a live action retelling of the classic tale based on the story 'The Nutcracker and the Mouse King' by E.T.A. Hoffman

Clara (Female) - aged 13-17 years

Lead role. Clever, creative and independent, Clara goes against female societal conventions of the period. At the beginning of the story she is lacking in confidence, struggling to cope with the death of her mother and trying to find her footing in the adult world. Uninterested in beauty and fashion, Clara is most herself when inventing contraptions and going on adventures; she is most comfortable in her own imagination. As she grows through the film we find her to be self sufficient, strong willed, curious, witty, inventive and ultimately confident in herself. She can be any height or ethnicity.

L'attrice a novembre compie 16 anni, proprio come ricercavano i casting.

‘Interstellar’ Star Mackenzie Foy to Lead Disney’s ‘The Nutcracker’ (EXCLUSIVE)

The live action project is titled “The Nutcracker and the Four Realms.” It is based on the 1816 story “The Nutcracker and the Mouse King” by E.T.A. Hoffmann in which a Clara (Foy) is charged by her parents with taking care of a Christmas toy Nutcracker doll which comes to life and defeats an evil Mouse King with seven heads.

Concordiamo, Iry.

Morgan Freeman Joining Disney's 'The Nutcracker' (Exclusive)

Mackenzie Foy is starring as Clara while Misty Copeland will play the lead ballerina in the live-action film.

News:

Keira Knightley to Star as Sugar Plum Fairy in ‘The Nutcracker’ Live-Action Film (EXCLUSIVE)

Keira Knightley will star as the Sugar Plum Fairy in Disney’s retelling of “The Nutcracker.”

Mackenzie Foy is on board to play Clara, with Misty Copeland and Morgan Freeman also attached to the movie.

The live-action film — based on E.T.A. Hoffmann’s 1816 story “The Nutcracker and the Mouse King” — is titled “The Nutcracker and the Four Realms.” In the pic, one of Clara’s Christmas toys — a Nutcracker doll — comes to life and battles the evil Mouse King with seven heads.

Russian composer Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, and choreographers Marius Petipa and Lev Ivanov turned Alexandre Dumas’ adaptation of the classic story into the “The Nutcracker” ballet in 1892.

Lasse Hallström will direct the upcoming film from Ashleigh Powell’s script. Mark Gordon is producing, while Lindy Goldstein is executive producing. Sam Dickerman and Allison Erlikhman are overseeing the project for Disney. Sara Smith is working on behalf of the Mark Gordon Company.

Knightley has a long history with the studio that began with the “Pirates of the Caribbean” franchise. She was most recently seen in the Working Title ensemble disaster film “Everest.” Her New Line dramedy “Collateral Beauty,” also starring Will Smith and Kate Winslet, opens this December.

She is repped by CAA, United Agents, and MGMT Entertainment.

Dal sito ScreenCrush:

Keira Knightley to Play Live-Action Sugar Plum Fairy in Disney’s ‘The Nutcracker’

Of the many properties ripe for a live-action remake or retelling, The Nutcracker seems like one of the less obvious choices for Disney’s ever-growing roster, but, like Pete’s Dragon, maybe that’s what makes it sort of perfect. As evidenced by the casting of Misty Copeland, Disney is definitely sticking to the ballet concept for their new adaptation of the classic story, but she won’t be the only one dancing her way across the big screen; today brings word that Keira Knightley has joined the cast of The Nutcracker and the Four Realms, in which she’ll play the Sugar Plum Fairy.

Variety reports on Knightley’s casting in Disney’s new live-action take on The Nutcracker, which also stars Interstellar’s Mackenzie Foy as young Clara and Morgan Freeman as Drosselmeyer, the girl’s mysterious godfather who brings her toys to life. In a perfect bit of casting, Knightley will play the ethereal Sugar Plum Fairy, who rules the Land of Sweets while the Nutcracker Prince is away.

Based on the classic story by E.T.A. Hoffmann, The Nutcracker was revised by Alexandre Dumas and later adapted into the popular, enduring ballet. Lasse Hallstrom (The Hundred-Foot Journey) is directing Disney’s live-action version, which is fully titled The Nutcracker the Four Realms, and will retell the story of a young girl whose nutcracker toy comes to life, revealing himself to be a prince from a magical far away land.

Dal sito The Knowledge:

Next Disney film sets dates and locations

Disney’s major new film The Nutcracker and the Four Realms is set to use Minley Manor in Hampshire as one of its locations.

We broke the news back in May that the Mouse House had once again chosen the UK as the main filming base for its latest blockbuster.

According to local news outlet Get Hampshire, which reported the film as unnamed, the feature is set to use the Grade II-listed manor house following a planning application at Hart District Council from an outfit called Mistletoe Pictures Ltd, which The Knowledge has confirmed is the company name used for the Disney project.

Also lodged with the council is a planning application for filming from Crooked House Productions Ltd, the company behind the Agatha Christie feature film adaptation Crooked House. Shooting is imminent.

The application for The Nutcracker project was submitted with a supporting statement by Planit Consulting, an acting agent for the production company. It is quoted as saying: “Works at the site will be limited to the temporary change of use of land and building for a maximum one-month period, with no requirement for set build or substantial set pieces.”

The statement continued to confirm that filming will also include the use of fake snow with 100-150 crew and cast expected on site during the filming days.

The manor house was built in the mid-1850s in the style of a French chateau, and has been used as a backdrop for films including Stardust and Die Another Day.

PI subscribers can log in for details of the exact shoot dates on The Nutcracker and the Four Realms along with a round-up of crucial hires. It stars Mackenzie Foy, Morgan Freeman, Keira Knightley and Misty Copeland.

Also on PI is a round-up of filming dates and key production personnel on Crooked House.

The English actress will be joining Keira Knightley and Helen Mirren in the live-action adaptation of the classic ballet.

Miranda Hart has joined the cast of the Disney's The Nutcracker and the Four Realms.

The scene-stealer from Paul Feig's Spy will be seen along with Interstellar actress Mackenzie Foy, who is starring as Clara, and Keira Knightley, who will be playing the Sugar Plum Fairy.

Helen Mirren, Morgan Freeman and ballerina Misty Copeland will also star in the live-action feature, which will be directed by Lasse Hallstrom from a script by Ashleigh Powell based on The Nutcracker and the Mouse King by E.T.A. Hoffmann.
