Stephanie Hsu Joins Disney’s ‘American Born Chinese’

According to Variety, Everything Everywhere All At Once breakout star Stephanie Hsu is joining the upcoming Disney+ series American Born Chinese.

Interestingly enough, the role will reunite Hsu with fellow Everything Everywhere All At Once co-stars Michelle Yeoh (Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings) and Ke Huy Quan (The Goonies).

The Disney+ series will also be directed by Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings director Destin Daniel Cretton.

Based on the graphic novel of the same name by Gene Luen Yang, the American Born Chinese tells the story of three apparently unrelated characters: Jin Wang, who moves to a new neighborhood with his family only to discover that he’s the only Chinese-American student at his new school; the powerful Monkey King, subject of one of the oldest and greatest Chinese fables; and Chin-Kee, a personification of the ultimate negative Chinese stereotype, who is ruining his cousin Danny’s life with his yearly visits. Their lives and stories come together with an unexpected twist in this action-packed modern fable. American Born Chinese is an amazing ride, all the way up to the astonishing climax.

Hsu will guest star as Shiji Niangniang, the Goddess of Stones, who works in a modern day jewelry shop along with her magical dog.

Nel cast Michelle Yeoh e la trama è a dir poco intrigante:

Jin, nella storia, sfugge ai sentimenti di alienazione e isolamento rifugiandosi in un regno fantastico popolato da personaggi legati alla mitologia cinese, tra cui Sun Wukong (Monkey King), parte affidata a Daniel Wu, e la dea Guanyn, parte affidata a Michelle Yeoh, che non è presente nell’opera originale, ma nella graphic novel Boxers & Saints.

La serie sarà pubblicata il 24 maggio e visto l'Oscar della Yeoh sarà abbastanza pompata.

Questa serie si ritrova abbastanza inaspettatamente ben 2 premi Oscar!
Mi sa che faranno fatica a rinnovarla per una seconda stagione, con i cachet che lieviteranno.

Bello il poster ma la paura è che diventi un’ennesima serie cancellata.

Siamo sempre lì, finche ne daranno un'accettabile conclusione, almeno della storia principale, per me non sarebbe la fine del mondo. Una serie potrebbe anche essere riconfigurata come miniserie se poi il livello scendesse (come praticamente sempre) con ipotetiche stagioni successive, invece di mozzarla con un cliffhanger irrisolto.

Il titolo italiano sarà "Alla ricerca di me" e uscirà su Disney+ il 24 maggio.

Titolo italiano incomprensibile. Sottolineo che l'edizione italiana del fumetto su cui è basata la serie ha mantenuto il titolo originale.

Ovviamente la nazionalità cinese funge da deterrente rispetto all’onnipresente traino americano.
Questo lo pensano i boomer della Disney Italia.
