Sarah Hyland Joins ABC’s Fairytale Drama Pilot ‘Epic’ From ‘Once Upon A Time’ Creators

EXCLUSIVE: Modern Family alumna Sarah Hyland is returning to ABC, joining the cast of fairytale drama pilot Epic, from Once Upon a Time creators Adam Horowitz and Edward Kitsis and ABC Signature.

Epic, headlined by Brittany O’Grady and also starring Eleanor Fanyinka, is described as a romantic anthology series that reinvents fairy tales for a new audience.

Hyland will play Rose. She is as princess-y as princesses come, and about to marry her Prince Charming. But her fairy tale gets upended when he has second thoughts, and trying to preserve her dreams opens her up to an unexpected world.

Epic was penned by former Once Upon a Time writer Brigitte Hales, who executive produces with Horowitz, Kitsis and Griffiths. James Griffiths is directing the pilot, which is not for fall 2021 consideration.

Hyland starred for eleven seasons on ABC’s Modern Family as Haley, the eldest of the Dunphy family children. On the film side, she starred in and also executive produced romantic comedy The Wedding Year. She currently hosts and executive produces Lady Parts with Sarah Hyland on EllenTube. Hyland is repped by WME, Richard Konigsberg and GTRB.

ABC Fairytale Drama Pilot Epic Adds Game of Thrones Vet Toby Sebastian

ABC’s Epic fairytale drama has found its first prince.

Created by Once Upon a Time writer Brigitte Hales with OUAT creators Adam Horowitz and Eddy Kists also serving as EPs, Epic is described as a romantic anthology “that reinvents fairy tales for a new audience.”

As recently reported, Modern Family‘s Sarah Hyland will play Rose, a princess who’s about to marry her proverbial Prince Charming, “but her fairy tale gets upended when he has second thoughts.”

TVLine has learned exclusively that English actor/singer/songwriter Toby Sebastian, whose previous credits include an arc on HBO’s Game of Thrones, has joined the pilot as Rose’s husband-to-be, Philippe. Described as the quintessential storybook prince, Philippe is following what he believes is his destined path to True Love when he finds himself at a surprising crossroads, leading him to question everything he held dear.

The cast for Epic, which will be under consideration for midseason, also includes Brittany O’Grady (Little Voice) as cynical princess Luna and Eleanor Fanyinka (Holby City) as a mysterious character known as The Seer.

In addition to his aforementioned run as Game of Thrones‘ Trystane Martell, Sebastian’s previous acting credits include the Andrea Bocelli biopic The Music of Silence (directed by Academy Award nominee Michael Radford and also starring Antonio Banderas) and the miniseries All You Need Is Me.

Dal sito Sunday World:

'AMAZING CAST' Modern Family's Sarah Hyland excited to be filming 'epic' new series in Ireland

Hyland, who is best known for her role as Haley Dunphy in Modern Family, will be playing Princess Rose in the upcoming ABC series, Epic

Modern Family star Sarah Hyland has started filming a new fairytale drama series in Ireland.

Hyland, who is best known for her role as Haley Dunphy in Modern Family, will be playing Princess Rose in the upcoming ABC series, Epic.

Epic has been described as a romantic anthology series that reimagines classic fairytales for the modern audience.

The show comes from Once Upon A Time writer Brigitte Hales, with the creators of the popular ABC fairytale series, Adam Horowitz and Edward Kitsis, joining the Epic team as producers.

The show has just commenced filming at Luttrellstown Castle in Dublin’s outskirts, which many will recognise as the location of David and Victoria Beckham’s wedding in 1999.

The 30-year-old actress has been staying in Ireland for the past month and has shared some photos from the Epic set.

In an Instagram post, Sarah posed beside a white horse and wrote: “A Rose and her steed: An EPIC Series... maybe.

“So excited to be working on a project for the first time in over a year! I’ve already been overseas for a month with the most amazing cast, we started shooting yesterday, and let’s just say that this is going to be... EPIC.”

The Manhattan native’s co-star, theatre veteran Nick Dunning, also shared a snap of them smiling in their costumes and Sarah looked regal with a hairstyle fit for a princess.

Nick tweeted: “And then he got a brand new surrogate daughter! #disney #ModernFamily #actorslife #stunningdunning.”

Nick’s role in the upcoming series has yet to be confirmed, but his social media post hints that he will be playing Hyland’s father in the drama.

Brittany O’Grady and Eleanor Fanyinka are also billed to star in Epic, which is set to premiere on ABC in America later this year.

Luttrellstown Castle in Clonsilla originally dates from the early 15th century, and has often played host to royalty, including Queen Victoria of England, Prince Rainier and Princess Grace of Monaco and Queen Magrethe II of Denmark.

Luttrellstown is also a popular venue for celebrity events, including the 1999 wedding of David and Victoria Beckham, and, more recently, the christening of Croía McGregor, the daughter of Conor McGregor and Dee Devlin.

Dal sito The Hollywood Reporter:

Pilot Update: ‘Epic,’ ‘Promised Land’ Still in Contention as ABC Passes on 3 Others

'Triage,' 'National Parks Investigation' and 'Dark Horse' are not moving forward at the network.

With options expiring June 30, ABC has trimmed down its remaining pilot crop.

Of ABC’s five remaining drama pilots, the network has extended options on Disney fairy tale entry Epic and Latinx family drama Promised Land. That means that pilots Triage, National Parks Investigation and Dark Horse are no longer moving forward. Dark Horse, based on an Australian format, will be shopped by producers Universal Television.

Epic, which marks the return to ABC for Once Upon a Time creators Eddy Kitsis and Adam Horowitz, was picked up to pilot in January and has been casting. The fairy tale anthology stars Brittany O’Grady and Modern Family‘s Sarah Hyland and is produced in-house at ABC Signature, where Kitsis and Horowitz are under an overall deal.

Promised Land was another pilot ordered in early 2021. From writer Matt Lopez (who is scripting the Father of the Bride update for Warner Bros.), the drama is a generation-spanning entry about two Latinx families vying for wealth and power in California’s Sonoma Valley. John Ortiz (Luck) and Christina Ochoa (Animal Kingdom) star in the ABC Signature drama.

Both Epic and Promised Land were ordered to pilot under ABC’s new executive regime, which in December saw Hulu’s Craig Erwich add oversight of the broadcast network to his purview after his predecessor, Karey Burke, was promoted to oversee Disney-owned studio 20th Television. Burke and Erwich developed both shows.

As for the pilot passes, Dark Horse was also picked up to pilot in March under Erwich’s oversight. William Jehu Garroutte, a citizen of the Cherokee nation, penned the script for a drama about an Indigenous woman who gets into politics. The pilot was never cast. Th project was a co-production between Universal TV, ABC Signature and Keshet, which oversaw the Aussie original.

National Parks Investigation was also a co-production between A+E Studios (which has Big Sky returning for a second season on ABC) and 20th TV. Kevin Costner penned the script for the drama about a group of national park security agents solving crimes while protecting the national treasures. Billy Campbell starred in the drama. National Parks Investigation was picked up to pilot twice — once in early 2020 and again at the start of this year — as the novel coronavirus pandemic upended last year’s pilot season.

Rounding out the passes is Triage, another holdover from last year that had to be filmed post-pandemic. The medical drama with a story that spans over three decades starred Michael Ealy and hailed from Criminal Minds showrunner Erica Messer. The project was produced by 20th Television. Messer, meanwhile, now has a revival of Criminal Minds to work on for Paramount+, which likely ranks as her top priority.

The pandemic wiped out pilot season 2020, forcing comedies and dramas that were picked up more than a year ago to compete with other newly ordered projects. Some pilots from last year’s crop were picked up straight to series and produced entirely during the pandemic, with most of this year’s freshman crop failing to make it to a second season. ABC’s rookie class is returning Big Sky and comedy Home Economics, while Call Your Mother and Rebel were both canceled.

ABC has already added four new series for the 2021-22 broadcast season — comedies Abbott Elementary, Maggie and The Wonder Years update as well as hip-hop drama Queens — with Epic and now Promised Land also in contention for series pickups for a possible midseason or beyond premiere.

As for the other four broadcast networks, only NBC has other pilots that are still awaiting word on their futures. The network’s roster consists of a mix of 2020 holdovers and 2021 additions with comedies Crazy For You, Hungry, Jefferies, Night Court and Someone Out There; as well as dramas At That Age, Dangerous Moms, Echo, Getaway and the untitled Nick Wootton. Of those, sources say the yet-to-cast Echo — from The Blacklist producers John Davis and John Fox and writer JJ Bailey — could move to a streamer.

Elsewhere, The CW is redeveloping Greg Berlanti and Diablo Cody’s Powerpuff, though it’s unclear if that has a shot at the 2021-22 schedule.

As a result of the pandemic, broadcast networks have shifted more to a year-round development schedule, with pilots in contention beyond the traditional start of the year. Pilot season has always been an insane time of year as all five broadcast networks compete for top talent, directors and filming locations in the same three-month window. The shift to year-round follows a cable and streaming model while also allowing broadcast networks to take extra time with scripts.

Staremo a vedere...

Dal sito DeadLine:

‘Epic’: Fairytale Drama Pilot From ‘Once Upon a Time’ Creators Not Going Forward At ABC

ABC brass have made the final round of decisions on the network’s outstanding drama pilots. Following the pickup to series for sprawling multi-generational Latinx family drama Promised Land earlier today, the network has opted not to proceed with the fairytale-themed Epic, executive produced by Once Upon a Time creators Adam Horowitz and Edward Kitsis.

ABC previously picked up to series drama pilot Queens while passing on Triage, Dark Horse and the Kevin Costner-executive produced National Parks Investigation.

Epic, written by former Once Upon a Time writer Brigitte Hales and directed by James Griffiths, was among three 2021 ABC drama pilots that were put on a different track; it was filmed in Ireland for post-upfront consideration. The large-scope drama, headlined by Brittany O’Grady and also starring Sarah Hyland and Eleanor Fanyinka, was described as a romantic anthology that reinvents fairy tales for a new audience.

Like Once Upon a Time, the high-concept Epic was a big swing and an admirable effort; I hear it just did not quite come together.

Epic was executive produced by Hales, Horowitz, Kitsis and Griffiths.

Dal sito The Hollywood Reporter:

ABC Passes on ‘Epic’ Disney Drama From ‘Once Upon a Time’ Creators

The anthology from Adam Horowitz and Edward Kitsis was to star Brittany O'Grady.

Epic, the Disney-themed fairy tale anthology, is not moving forward at ABC.

The Disney-owned broadcast network has opted to not pick up the drama pilot to series. Ordered to pilot in January under new network topper Craig Erwich, Epic would have marked a homecoming to ABC for Once Upon a Time creators Adam Horowitz and Edward Kitsis. The duo exec produced Epic alongside writer Brigitte Hales, who previously worked with Horowitz and Kitsis on Once Upon a Time and their short-lived Apple anthology Amazing Stories.

Sources say the pilot didn’t come in strong despite execs being excited about the script. The pilot was filmed in Ireland, and, because of the pandemic, Kitsis and Horowitz were unable to go on location for the shoot.

Brittany O’Grady (Apple’s recently canceled Little Voice), Modern Family’s Sarah Hyland and Eleanor Fanyinka starred in Epic. The pilot was produced by ABC Signature, where Kitsis and Horowitz remain based with a rich overall deal. The duo inked a four-year renewal back in 2018 that at the time was believed to have made Kitsis and Horowitz the highest-paid drama producers at the studio following Shonda Rhimes’ move to Netflix.

Kitsis and Horowitz remain at work on their Beauty and the Beast prequel series for Disney+. The limited series, starring Josh Gad and Luke Evans reprising their roles from the 2017 reboot, scored an eight-episode series order in June. Kitsis, Horowitz and Gad — who previously teamed to develop a Muppets update for Disney+ — will write scripts and serve as showrunners.

The decision to pass on Epic, which had been a front-runner at ABC, comes as the network earlier Wednesday handed out a series pickup for Promised Land. The Latinx family drama was picked up to pilot earlier this year alongside Epic as both remained in contention for a midseason bow.

ABC has now made decisions on all of its pilot orders. The network has a total of five new scripted series for the 2021-22 broadcast season: Promised Land and hip-hop drama Queens; and single-camera comedies Abbott Elementary, Maggie and The Wonder Years.

Keep track of all the renewals, cancellations and new series orders with THR’s handy scorecard and click here for the latest on all the broadcast pilots.

All I'll say is the pilot was not good. I couldn't even finish it. It sucks because I was looking forward to the show when first announced, but I promise that you guys are not missing anything at all.
