EXCLUSIVE: Ming-Na Wen, Original Voice of 'Mulan,' Might Have a Role in Disney's Live-Action Remake!

Ming-Na Wen could be making an appearance in the upcoming live-action remake of Mulan!

The Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. star, who first lent her voice to Mulan in the beloved 1998 animated Disney movie, stopped by ET's studios on Tuesday for a live Facebook interview and revealed if the upcoming remake has her blessing.

"Wow! I wish I could say that it needs it," Wen said with a smile. "But I'm very excited that they want to do a live-action because they've done so amazingly with all of the movies -- from Maleficent, to Beauty and the Beast, to Cinderella. I'm really looking forward to the live-action."

The ABC star added that there is one thing that she's definitely "hoping for" in the next Mulan. "I would love to have a part in it in some way," she said. "We'll see -- knock on wood!'

Wen, who continues to voice the role of Mulan on Disney Channel's Sofia the First and the Disney Infinity video games, dished that she is already having "conversations" about having some kind of role in the film.

"I know the fans really want it and love it. And some of them even go, 'Well, why don’t you just play Mulan?' And I'm like, 'Yeah, if it's Mulan: The Later Years,'" the 53-year-old actress said with a laugh.

When asked which star she'd love to see step into her shoes as Mulan, Wen only has one request: "That she's Chinese in her heritage."

She continued, "Even though we're Pan-Asian, it is specifically a Chinese folklore and I really think that someone with that ethnic background [would] really just add more to the story."

Based on the Chinese legend of Hua Mulan, Disney's animated version followed the daughter of an aged warrior who takes her father's place in the military by disguising herself as a man. In the film, Mulan goes on to become a national hero and one of the most skilled warriors in the army.

Ming-Na Wen Is In Talks For A Mulan Cameo

For most comic book fans, Ming-Na Wen is the Cavalry, Melinda May on Agents of SHIELD. But before that, she was the girl who saved China, the voice of the lead character in the 1998 Walt Disney animated classic Mulan.

Mulan is now on the list of animated films that Disney is planning to adapt to live-action following the success of The Jungle Book and Beauty and the Beast. Would Wen be interested and willing to make a an appearance in the live-action movie? Has she already been asked?

“All of the above,” Wen said during a panel at Heroes & Villains Fest in Nashville on Saturday. “I'm hoping. I mean, I've spoken to one of the producers on the film, and they're still in the very early stages of it. So, we're keeping an eye on it, and hopefully, yeah, It would be lovely too, I think, for the fans as well as for myself, right?

“So, I want everybody to Tweet, later on, today, to Disney and let them know how you feel,” Wen joked.

The Mulan live-action movie will be directed by Niki Caro. The casting process for the lead character is already underway. Chris Bender, J. C. Spink and Jason Reed are producing. Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver (Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, Jurassic World) rewrote the most recent version of the script, which was originally written by Elizabeth Martin and Lauren Hynek when Disney first put the project in motion in 2015.

There was some controversy around the project when Martin and Hynek's early script was leaked and revealed a story focusing on a white merchant who falls in love with Mulan. Disney has since stated that the script was at most a "jumping off point" and that the story has been heavily rewritten and will star all Chinese actors.

The live-action Mulan is currently scheduled for release on Nov. 8, 2018.

Disney made a previous attempt at a live-action Mulan movie in the early 2000s. Zhang Ziyi was attached to star and Chuck Russell to direct. Filming was to begin in October 2010, but the project was scrapped before then.

In the original Mulan, based on the Chinese legend of Hua Mulan, fearful that her ailing father will be drafted into the Chinese military, Mulan (Ming-Na Wen) takes his spot -- though, as a girl living under a patriarchal regime, she is technically unqualified to serve. She cleverly impersonates a man and goes off to train with fellow recruits. Accompanied by her dragon, Mushu (Eddie Murphy), she uses her smarts to help ward off a Hun invasion, falling in love with a dashing captain along the way.

Liu é popolarissima in Cina e ha già all'attivo diversi film e serie tv. E' attrice, modella e cantante.

Disney's 'Mulan' Finds Its Star (Exclusive)
Chinese actress Liu Yifei, also known as Crystal Liu, is set to play the lead in the live-action adaptation directed by Niki Caro.

Chinese actress Liu Yifei, also known as Crystal Liu, is set to star as the title woman warrior in Disney's live-action adaptation of the classic Chinese tale.

A team of casting directors visited five continents and saw nearly 1,000 candidates for the role, which requires credible martial arts skills, the ability to speak English and the most ineffable requirement of all: star quality. In deference to cultural accuracy, the studio focused on locating an ethnically Chinese young woman to play Hua Mulan, who disguised herself as a man to take her father's army conscription in fifth-century China.

In Liu, Disney found the complete package. Nicknamed "Fairy Sister" by the Chinese public for her pure and innocent looks and image, she has been one of the country's most popular actresses of the current generation since breaking out with a series of hit television dramas in the mid-2000s, while she was still a teenager enrolled in the Beijing Film Academy. She is fluent in English, having lived in Queens, N.Y., for part of her childhood, and acted in English in both 2008's The Forbidden Kingdom, alongside Jackie Chan and Jet Li, and 2014's Outcast, opposite Nicolas Cage and Hayden Christensen. She also starred opposite Emile Hirsch in Danish auteur Bille August's period romance The Chinese Widow, which opened the Shanghai International Film Festival in June.

Liu, who has served as a brand ambassador for Dior, Tissot, Garnier and Pantene, most recently starred in the fantasy romance Once Upon a Time, which earned $82.3 million in China this summer. Her other credits include 2012's The Assassins, which earned Liu her first major acting award (at the Macau International Movie Festival), Never Gone and The Four trilogy. She recently signed with WME and continues to be represented by Chinese manager David Chen.

Niki Caro, who most recently helmed The Zookeeper’s Wife, is directing Disney's live-action Mulan, which is produced by Chris Bender, Jason Reed and Jake Weiner and eyeing a 2019 release. The 1998 animated version, voice-starring Agents of SHIELD's Ming-Na Wen alongside Eddie Murphy and B.D. Wong, earned $304.3 million worldwide as well as Golden Globe and Academy Award nominations.
