THEATER
Lea Michele to Star in "The Little Mermaid" at the Hollywood Bowl
Thingamabobs? She's got 20!

March 30, 2019

Lea Michele is quite the songstress. Of course, this is a widely known fact as we all remember her Glee days portraying theatre aficionado-turned-star Rachel Berry. Upon hearing her sing “Defying Gravity” from Wicked in one of the early episodes, we became instant lifelong stans, though Lea’s theatrical career started much earlier than that. After Glee came to an end following season six (moment of silence please), Lea went on to do much more acting, including a hit role in the series Scream Queens. But for those who have been dying to see Lea belt her face off once again, things are about to feel so much better.

Hold onto your thingamabobs because Lea is headed to the Hollywood Bowl to star as Ariel in The Little Mermaid. According to Broadway World, Lea be diving under the sea for two performances only on May 17 and 18, where she will perform some of the iconic mermaid’s most memorable songs.

Shaking? Same! But who will play Ursula, the baddest witch of the waters who steals Ariel’s voice? None other than Broadway icon Harvey Fierstein, known for his portrayal of Edna Turnblad in the original cast of Hairspray. The production will also star Cheech Marin as Chef Louis, Peter Gallagher as King Triton (hello Sandy Cohen!), Leo Gallo as Prince Eric, and Ken Page as Sebastian.

Honestly, we have so many questions: Will Lea dye her hair red? Will she move around on rollerblades like in the Broadway production? Will Harvey's version of Ursula leave our poor unfortunate souls rendered speechless? Either way, we’re so excited for this production and the many YouTube videos of Lea’s performance that we will be binge-watching for the rest of eternity.

FILM SCORES
Disney’s The Little Mermaid 30th Anniversary at The Hollywood Bowl
By Melissa Thompson | May 22, 2019

On Friday, May 18th, WAMG went under the sea for the 30th Anniversary “Live to Film Concert Experience” of Disney’s The Little Mermaid at the Hollywood Bowl.

There was no shortage of star power as some big names took the stage during the screening to sing all of the fan-favorite numbers. Lea Michele (as Ariel), Harvey Fierstein (as Ursula), Cheech Marin (as Chef Louis), Peter Gallagher (as King Triton), Leo Gallo (as Prince Eric), Ken Page (as Sebastian) and special guest Alan Menken, who performed the songs from the Oscar and Grammy-winning score as the film played on the Bowl’s movie screen accompanied by a full, live orchestra. Not gonna lie, we almost wept, when the beating-heart-of-Disney-musicals himself, Alan Menken walked out on stage and sat at the piano for a sweet rendition of “Part of Your World.”

The coolest part of the evening was the feeling of an underwater night out at the “dive-in,” in addition to the feature film, the show included a full program of aquatically-themed previews of coming attractions, nostalgic animated snack bar commercials, and the 1938 Silly Symphony cartoon “Merbabies” featuring the world premiere of a live original score composed and performed by 17 year-old piano sensation, Emily Bear. Fans were also invited to participate in a Little Mermaid themed costume contest and unique photo opportunities to get them in the spirit before the show.

Additionally, the award-winning creative studio Mousetrappe set up state-of-the-art projection mapping technology to project newly created and breathtaking animated “living scenery” onto the façade of the Hollywood Bowl, making the event an evolving extension of the beloved film and score.

It truly was a magical night under the sea (and stars!) and no one does that better then Disney.

Five Stars *****
