Mi sorprende che ritornino a usare Baymax, la serie di Big Hero 6 non l’ho ancora vista

Son davvero curioso di sapere cosa racconteranno in sei episodi e che animazione useranno.
Sono un povero illuso se spero nello stesso stile d'animazione del film visto che sono solo 6 episodi da 15 minuti? 😭

è il primo cartone su una Principessa disegnato dai Walt Disney Animation Studios (quelli dei classici) e non dalle tv o dai Disney Toons... ergo dovrebbe avere un'animazione più fedele al Classico da cui è tratto.

Ci piace che si intitoli Tiana, così almeno è una serie su una ragazza e funziona.

La storia riguarda le avventure di Tiana sia a New Orleans sia nel Regno di Maldonia (chissà che aspetto avrà il Regno di Maldonia, inizialmente si pensava a un aspetto tipicamente italiano...)

Non credo sarà in 2D ahimè, o comunque la vedo dura che ripropongano l'animazione del Classico; come ha detto Valerio (mi pare), potrebbe essere al massimo un'animazione stilizzata tipo la serie di Rapunzel.

Ottima notizia! Credo che faranno qualcosa di stilizzato, più semplice da animare, alla serie di "Rapunzel".

Io spero invece nello stesso stile del Classico, Shuler dice inoltre che questa serie, come pure quelle di Baymax, Oceania e Zootropolis sono tutte canoniche.

Da quello che abbiamo capito non ha uno stile alla serie tv di Rapunzel ma proprio lo stile del film... gli episodi sono ridotti (6 in totale) anche per questa ragione... (tra l'altro se davvero facessero una serie su ciascuna principessa, le serie di Rapunzel, La Sirenetta e Aladdin - per la questione di Jasmine - non sarebbero più "canoniche" in quanto non realizzate dai WDAS)...

Beh la serie della Sirenetta già ora non è per niente canon, ha una serie infinita di elementi che vanno in contrasto con la trama del film (l’incontro tra Ariel ed Eric in primis) ed anche coi sequel direct-to-dvd

Ma infatti il concetto di canone è legato alla storia, non allo stile; "Rapunzel-la serie" credo proprio sia canonica perché non va a smentire quanto visto nel Classico e nel corto, per quanto non sia stata prodotta dai WDAS; se non erro le vicende si intersecano senza contraddirsi (aspetto che lo dica un altro però, ho visto solo il film "Prima del sì" e non il resto della serie).

Sono a due terzi della serie. Mio parere: al netto dei filler, che ci sono perché cmq è una serie televisiva di vecchia concezione, una delle ultime, credo, è un lavoro davvero degno di nota e in grado di rivaleggiare con i WDAS quanto a qualità e impatto visivo.

Sono certo che benché sia WDTA e non WDAS abbia costituito una sorta di "prova generale" per questo netto cambio di marcia, dato che ad essere coinvolta è comunque parte della crew del classico (Claire Keane, Alan Menken, Glenn Slater).

(Canonico ha due significati, attualmente. 1) Che si intende come "avvenuto" nella realtà narrativa di cui si parla. 2) Che fa parte di un qualche corpus principale)

speriamo facciano una buona serialità e speriamo anche che al DisneyDay di venerdì 12 novembre qualcosa annuncino anche su questo progetto che è uno di quelli che ci attira di più.

Skyler Shuler di The Disinsider nella nuova Question & Answer sul Disney+ Day, alla domanda se Tiana sarà in 2D risponde che crede di sì e che crede che vogliano che queste serie di cartoni ispirati ai film siano il più possibile fedeli ai lungometraggi.

Dalla sinossi dicono che è stata appena incoronata Principessa di Maldonia... chissà se significa che è collocato subito dopo il primo film oppure se è quando è salita al trono (e ciò farebbe di Maldonia un Principato e non un Regno)... chissà...

In 2009, Disney released their groundbreaking film The Princess and the Frog, and for the first time, the heroine was a Black young woman named Tiana. For Black girls and grown women alike, the moment was deeply significant. One of those women was writer and director Stella Meghie.

Meghie, the woman behind films like The Photograph and The Weekend and a longtime fan of Disney movies, is writing a new long-form musical series following Disney’s first Black princess.

Tiana, announced today in conjunction with other upcoming features on Disney+ Day, centers on the newly crowned Princess of Maldonia who hails from New Orleans. In celebration of the streaming platform’s second anniversary, The Walt Disney Company is offering Disney+ subscribers special benefits including additional time in Disney parks, exclusive first-looks on the platform and more. From now through Sunday, November 14, new and eligible returning subscribers can get one month of Disney+ for $1.99.

Walt Disney Animation Studios announced that Stella Meghie (“The Photograph”) will be director and writer of the new long-form musical series, “Tiana,” coming to Disney+ in 2023. In the series, Tiana sets off for a grand new adventure as the newly crowned Princess of Maldonia, but a calling to her New Orleans past isn’t far behind.

Tiana is set to debut in 2023 but we had a chance to speak to Meghie about the new project. See what she had to say about the importance of Princess Tiana and what we can expect from the series.

What did The Princess and the Frog mean to you when it was first released?

STELLA MEGHIE: It was huge. I’m such a huge Disney fan. The Little Mermaid was my first favorite movie that I can remember. Disney was just always in my mind. When Princess and the Frog came out, that was the first Black princess, the first Disney icon that I could relate to visually and experience-wise. It was huge. I love jazz. Everything about it was inspiring to me.

I tell the team at Disney all the time that I had been stalking Tiana, basically. I didn’t know that there was an opportunity to bring her to life again in animation. I thought maybe they would consider doing something live-action. Then I got a call saying that they’re doing a show with a particular princess. I said, ‘Which one?’ And when they said Tiana, I was just so excited. It was nothing I was expecting. It reminded me of what one of my mentors says, ‘When something’s for you, it’ll come to you. You won’t even have to chase it.’

How is writing for an animated character different from other projects you’ve done?

MEGHIE: There’s something about animation that is so freeing. It is very exciting to write whatever you want on the page without worrying about a note that says, ‘We can’t afford this.’ It’s pure imagination. You’re not bogged down by real life, real world themes and you can get to the bottom of certain themes and ideas and adventures. I love writing animation, it’s just blue sky.

When you learned you would be taking on the project officially, did you feel any increased pressure because of what Tiana means to the Black community?

MEGHIE: It’s a tremendous amount of weight because she means so much. She’s the only at the moment, really. You have to get it right. The Black community can be very scrutinizing. But I’m not new to this. I’m true to this. I’m used to it and it just really fuels me to work hard to make sure we’re digging really, really deep to make sure we’re getting to the soul of Tiana.

What’s so interesting about Princess Tiana is that she works. What possibilities does that open up in terms of her story?

MEGHIE: You will be surprised. It can take you very, very far. She is kind of the working girl. She is grounded in a real space that we all know in New Orleans. But in the series we are taking her on this grand adventure. When we meet her, she’s the newly crowned Princess of Maldonia. We get to see her explore that world but New Orleans is calling her back.

Those are her roots. I think that’s a theme I love to explore and Tiana will explore too. I think there’s a sense of exploring identity. While she is the Princess of Maldonia, she is still Tiana from New Orleans, so not letting go of that while also giving her a big adventure that I don’t think people will see coming.

In order to meet the content demands of Disney+, the studio is growing. They have added new employees in Southern California and are hiring hundreds more for a new facility it is opening in Vancouver in 2022. In an effort to diversify her workforce, Lee has recruited storytellers from the live-action world, including Stella Meghie, who wrote and directed the 2020 Netflix film The Photograph and episodes of HBO’s Insecure.

Lee entrusted Meghie to write and direct Tiana, a Disney+ series based on the character from The Princess and the Frog. Meghie, who had been moved by the story of Disney’s first Black princess, had reached out to Disney’s live-action studio about a potential film adaptation of the 2009 property. Nothing came of it, but last summer Meghie received a call from her agent indicating that Lee wanted to meet her.

“Talking to Jenn is not like talking to a normal studio head,” Meghie says. “She’s a writer and a creative genius. I really was inspired by that conversation. She just seemed like such a good thought partner.” Lee did something unusual — she wanted not only to see a couple of Meghie’s four films, but asked to read a script for one of those films. “That was a very good sign to me, because it said she really wanted to get to know me as a writer,” Meghie says. “That gave me confidence.”

Tiana sarà una serie in 2D o tecnica mista (cioè con la Toon Boom come il film originale) ma prevalentemente 2D e con l'aspetto dell'animazione tradizionale. Lo conferma Eric Goldberg.

I am not sure to give you an honest answer. It’s still very in-development right now in terms of the content. We don’t know what the content is going to be, but I suspect yes, there will be han- drawn in it. Absolutely. And we will see how that transpires, and there’s other content coming down the pike as well that will involve hand-drawn in both the Disney+ stuff and the shorts we’re doing and the features we’re doing. All of a sudden, it’s burgeoning again, which is a perfect time for us to have these trainees here and be on the ground floor of that. That’s great.

Dato che Stella Meghie lavorerà alla serie live action di Wonder Man per Marvel, su internet in molti si ponevano domande sulla serie tv di Tiana. E nel cicaleccio su internet è pure stato pensato che Tiana diventasse una serie live action.
TheDisinsider ha chiarito che la serie Tiana è tuttora in lavorazione e sarà animata (come è sempre stata pensata).

Meghie got her big break following the 2018 Toronto Film Festival premiere of her acclaimed pic The Weekend. The film helped put her on the map of up-and-coming filmmakers and ultimately led to her landing the 2020 Universal pic The Photograph, which she wrote, directed and exec produced. Her debut film was the critical darling Jean of the Joneses, which premiered at SXSW in 2016.

She is repped by CAA, Lighthouse Management and Media and attorney Gordon Bobb.

Credo che la stiano tirando per le lunghe perché sono anni che i WDAS non usano più l’animazione tradizionale, che sappiamo richiede molto più tempo della CGI, sono disabituati

crediamo che le difficoltà siano dovute al fatto che avevano smantellato tutti gli studi 2D e non avevano più animatori che disegnassero a mano... in ogni caso non crediamo proprio che sia in CGI, dato che vogliono riprendere il Classico come stile... e una serie tv è più gestibile disegnata in 2D che non in CGI anche se qui le puntate sono poche, però tenete conto che il reparto CGI lavora sulla serie tv di Oceania mentre gli animatori 2D lavorano a Tiana (può essere che usino le evoluzioni della Toon Boom, vedremo)
speriamo mostrino presto qualcosa, questa serie ci interessa molto... ci piace pensare che sviluppino meglio il personaggio di Tiana e quello di Naveen e ce li mostrino maggiormente umani dato che sono tra gli eroi più belli che hanno disegnato...

Speriamo la realizzino! Vogliamo vedere cosa fanno con l'universo della Principessa e il Ranocchio. Poi Tiana è tra le eroine più belle e meriterebbe di avere una storia maggiormente focalizzata su di lei da umana
Era la serie di Disney+ che attendevamo maggiormente...

La sensazione è che prima o poi diranno che è stata cancellata.
Probabilmente non ci credono molto e non aiuta nemmeno il fatto che recentemente hanno dichiarato di voler tagliare i costi di film e serie.

Tutto questo comferma che la piattaforma sta soffrendo e non vogliono più investirci troppo.
Ha avuto il boom in pandemia/quarantena e adesso la gente la sta lasciando.
Onestamente io ho l’abbonamento condiviso e non mi pesa ma la guardo pochisismo e soprattutto per i classici di cui ho poi andhe i dvd… probabilmente devono rivedere tutto il piano di distribuzione dei prodotti.
Che peccato però per Tiana e willow.

crediamo che la Disney non sia in grado di far fruttare le loro proprietà... la piattaforma Disney+ che era nata con un'idea ben precisa alla fine sta diventando (come avevamo previsto) l'equivalente di Disney Channel che non andava affatto ... è possibile che non capiscano il potenziale delle loro proprietà? fossimo in loro avremmo sviluppato le serie tv sui personaggi classici (appunto come Tiana), avremmo lanciato programmi alla C'era una volta (Once Upon a Time), presentato adattamenti di libri come le Twisted Tales o i romanzi di Serena Valentino in versione a cartoni/serie live action... insomma ne avrebbero da poter lavorare... eppure niente...
sta diventando fallimentare Disney+

al momento non ha una data di uscita... era prevista inizialmente per il 2023 poi si era parlato del 2024 ora si dice "coming soon" ma non vi è indicazione di date...
i maligni dicono che è cancellata (soprattutto considerando che la Meghie, la regista, è stata trasferita in Marvel)...
però pare che sia in realtà ancora in lavorazione... forse richiede più tempo... noi sinceramente speriamo che sia ancora in lavorazione e soprattutto di vederla a breve e che sia una serie ben fatta... Disney+ ha bisogno di questo tipo di contenuti

Che poi basterebbe vedere se le serie di Rapunzel e di Kion vanno ancora bene in termini di visualizzazioni per capire se la gente gradirebbe serie come questa su Tiana o su Moana.
Certamente non sarebbe totale come indizio, ma darebbe comunque un segnale che la gente gradisce e può gradire certi tipi di prodotti... soprattutto se sono indirizzati anche per adolescenti/adulti e non solo per bambini.

Mr. Hook, la serie di Rapunzel ha ancora all'attivo molti fans e molte pagine ad essa dedicate, tenendo conto che la terza stagione è stata fatta passare in sordina in quanto la Disney reputava che dalla stagione 2 in avanti fosse diventata troppo oscura e meno per bambini... come serie è ancora molto apprezzata e la gente la segue con interesse. non sappiamo i numeri ma la popolarità che ha avuto e sta ancora avendo significa che è rimasta...

Last week, Disney invited a few media members to historic Preservation Hall in New Orleans to have a Question and Answer session with the creative team working on Tiana’s Bayou Adventure. Ted: Well, I don't want to speak for our partners at the Walt Disney Animation Studios, but I know it's been announced that Tiana’s story is going to be furthered as part of a series or miniseries. I know earlier conversations about her relationship with her husband, who was from another country, likely of mixed race, depending on that time and period, it's a time of indigenous people and colonization and all those complexities of the world.

In that sense we can play more with the Disney+ series. We're doing the ' Moana ' series and it's been a lot of fun, I love it. 'Tiana' is a new world for her, a new direction and a new voice. I think it's a very good platform to start playing with things that have meant a lot to many of us.
For me, it is also recognizing that there is no turning back, only moving forward stronger and stronger. How technology has allowed us to maintain the importance of traditional animation through the artists is what excites me the most. There is a balance between the sequels and the original content. There are more 'Frozen' and more ' Zootropolis ' on the way because they invite their stories to grow, the filmmakers want to expand them.
But we also have a wonderful list of originals from a whole new, diverse and different generation of filmmakers. New types of stories. That's why we have to keep pushing the original movies. La trovo davvero bella,anche in generale come idea.
All'inizio pensavo fosse una specie di teaser della serie e sinceramente ero un po' inorridito dall'animazione che non è a livello,per fortuna invece è solo uno spot.
Della serie sono super curioso di vedere il regno di Maldonia e dei nuovi look per tiana

The “Tiana” animated series in the works at Disney+ has enlisted Joyce Sherri as the show’s lead writer and director, Variety has learned exclusively.

The musical project was originally announced in 2020 during a Disney investor day. The series has previously been described as a followup to the 2009 animated film “The Princess and the Frog,” which introduced the character of Tiana. Anika Noni Rose will once again provide the voice of Tiana. The series was originally expected to debut in 2023 but is now said to be launching in 2024.

Sherri’s most recent TV writing credit was on the Netflix horror miniseries “Midnight Mass” from Mike Flanagan. She has also written and directed short films like “Beauty,” “Forever,” “Down, Down, Baby” and “The Family Romance.” She also won the 2020 Slamdance screenplay competition for her feature, “Sweet Sixteen,” and was selected for the 2021 Sundance Institute Screenwriters Intensive.

She is repped by Gersh, Untitled, and Del Shaw Moonves.

The official description for “Tiana” states that the show will follow the title character as she “sets off for a grand new adventure as the newly crowned Princess of Maldonia, but a calling to her New Orleans past isn’t far behind.”

Walt Disney Animation Studios will produce “Tiana,” as the studio previously made “The Princess and the Frog.” Nathan Curtis will produce, with Jennifer Lee and Stella Meghie executive producing. Meghie was previously attached as the writer and director of the series, but remains onboard as an EP.

Disney also previously announced Disney+ series followups to films like “Zootopia,” “Big Hero 6,” “Moana,” and “Cars.” At the time of this publishing, all of those have been released with the exception of “Moana,” though a live-action version of that film is currently in the works.

News - Rumor:

Nella sezione Domande e Risposte del suo programma online, Grace Randolph riporta di aver sentito che Variety ha annunciato che la serie Tiana uscirà su Disney+ nel 2024, mentre lei continua a sostenere di aver sentito che uscirà nel 2025.

Meet Joyce Sherrí (TSOA ’16) [she/her]—the lead writer and director for the new animated Disney+ series Tiana, based off of the much beloved 2009 movie The Princess and the Frog.

“While at NYU I had the opportunity to be a writer, director, producer, assistant director, craft service, location sound mixer, editor, cinematographer, the list goes on. Being in these various roles taught me invaluable lessons about filmmaking, collaborating with others, and what you should and should not do as a leader,” says Joyce Sherrí (TSOA ’16) [she/her] when we asked about her time at Tisch’s graduate film program at NYU.

Joyce has taken this series of lessons with her throughout her post-NYU career, as she’s worn various hats within film production, from the writer’s room to the director’s chair. A couple of her latest projects include two Netflix Originals, Midnight Mass, her first writer’s room gig, and The Magic Order, for which Sherrí was a story editor.

We caught up with Joyce to talk about what she’s been up to since graduating from NYU’s graduate film program in 2016 and how she ended up in the much coveted role of lead writer and director for the upcoming animated Disney+ series Tiana.

Congratulations on being named lead writer and director of the Disney+ animated series Tiana! What was it like learning you got this role?

Thank you so much! Like many, I grew up on Disney, so to have the opportunity to add my own creative voice to that legacy is truly a blessing. Leading my own series as writer and director at Disney Animation for Tiana is an exciting new chapter of my journey that I can’t wait to share with the world. It is an absolute dream come true.

What has your journey been like as a writer for TV so far and what led you to this point?

My career has been both challenging and rewarding. I’ve discovered so much about myself as a writer and director over the years. Each lesson has contributed to nurturing my voice as an artist.

Your latest TV writing credit was for the Netflix Original Midnight Mass. What was that experience like and do you have a preference for writing within specific genres, like horror?

I always say I’m somewhere between Clueless and The Godfather with the things that I like and because of that I think I can have fun in just about any room. I wrote on Midnight Mass in 2019. It was my first writers room and I value the insights I gained from collaborating with so many unique and talented writers.

How did your time at NYU help prepare you for a career in the TV and film industry?

Independent filmmaking has its own unique set of challenges but it can also be very rewarding. The grad film program taught me how to make creative decisions on the fly, which fine tuned my creative muscles as a filmmaker. I learned how important it is to know exactly what you want as the visionary of a project and how to invite the talent of your collaborators into that process to achieve that vision.

Do you have any other upcoming projects and/or what are some dream projects you’d love to work on one day?

Right now, I’m fully immersed in my dream project and pouring all my energy into making it the best it can be. Future me would love to explore more opportunities in fantasy, romance, and horror, and maybe even all three at the same time.

What is some advice you have for NYU alumni who are trying to find their place within the TV and film writing world?

I won’t pretend that working in this industry is easy. Sometimes being a creative can feel like a slow burn because you’re essentially freelancing for life. But, if your passion is to be a storyteller in this particular medium you’re going to have to be persistent. I would also say don’t compare your journey to anyone else’s. There are so many paths to take in this industry. The true challenge, besides fighting the internal battle on whether or not to give up, is finding the path that works for you. Years ago, I was working on a documentary and a classmate of mine described the documentary process as like putting together a jigsaw puzzle without the full picture as a frame of reference. I think the same could be said about what it’s like trying to find your place as a filmmaker or even as an artist in general.

Just remember, Writers write. Directors direct. Unfortunately working really hard on something doesn’t mean it will immediately find its audience. Perhaps it is not the right time. Or perhaps it needs a few more drafts or you need to make another short film or a feature. The point is nothing that you create is a waste of time. So keep creating. There’s always something new to learn about yourself and your creative voice in the process. Now, whether it takes off in one year or ten, is what remains to be seen.

You have to build your creative portfolio. Then you take it out to festivals, fellowships, industry connections etc. If it doesn’t take you as far as you wanted, then you set that volume of your portfolio aside and start working on volume 2 or 3 or 20. Keep building until you find whatever your definition of success is. You should network, find your community of writers and filmmakers, and remain open to creating something new and evolving your craft.

What is a word or short phrase you would use to describe your experience at NYU?

Rigorous yet enriching.

Bad news, folks. From what I was told, Tiana won’t be hand-drawn animated. The animation will be similar to Wish, with CGI trying to emulate hand-drawn. At least, all the artwork seems to be gorgeous. And sadly, the series most likely won’t be released this year. The studio is eyeing a 2025 release.

On a happier note, the plot of the series will revolve around Tiana becoming queen of Maldonia


Traduzione:

Allora farebbero meglio a non produrla affatto
O in 2D o niente
Non posso credere che siano diventati così pigri e fissati con la CGI da non voler usare il 2D nemmeno per una dannata serie TV!
Mentre invece la Pixar sta sperimentando ( ho appena letto che in Inside Out 2 ci sarà un personaggio 2D )

ma piccole cose in 2D ci sono dai tempi di Oceania (tipo mini-Maui) o Raya (il prologo)... ma pure Frozen e Rapunzel avevano piccoli elementi 2D (pensiamo ai disegni sugli abiti per capirci)...
la tecnica Wish per ora è meglio che la usino anche perché sinceramente nei prossimi anni non è in progetto un film con quella tecnica (e crediamo che il flop di Wish abbia contribuito ad accantonarla)... poi ovvio che per Tiana, SE useranno quella tecnica, dovranno renderla anche più simile al cartone animato originario del 2009 come impostazione/palette di colori/setting/design dei personaggi
per ora sono rumors comunque...

Assuming this is true, which I actually feel is the actual truth, I will keep fighting, begging, and advocating damn hard for Disney to keep Tiana hand-drawn animated against all odds. And I don’t stop fighting until I’ve won.

Ma la cosa non è che mi faccia impazzire, il tratto del disegno dei primi artwork si sposavano con lo stile del Classico. Che è sta roba di fare un'animazione semplificata come quella della stilizzaziione della sequenza Almost There? Ma davvero c'è qualcuno che apprezza tutto ciò? Artisticamente lo posso capire, però anche Rapunzel non è che fosse sta gran bellezza. Per me molto più alla portata di un pubblico giovane e prescolare, abituato a queste animazioni come nelle serie tv del pomeriggio, a partire dai 2000, come Dexter e le SuperChicche per intenderci, non certo come me, cresciuto con Disney e al più gli anime come Candy e Sailor Moon.
