Dopo Tron, altro remake...

Da AintItCoolNews

TRON LEGACY director Joseph Kosinski and Sean Bailey (a producer on that film) are teaming with screenwriter Travis Beacham to "reinvent" THE BLACK HOLE.

Enormous in scale and filled with challenging thematics, Gary Nelson's 1979 original was a brooding, heavily-atmospheric piece that was released shortly after the far sleeker STAR TREK: THE MOTION PICTURE (which more or less swallowed it). Signifying the beginning of Disney's migration towards more "mature" fare, THE BLACK HOLE was the studio's first PG rated film. It was remarkably dark in tone for its time - and even for today. Too oppressive for kids but sometimes too goofy fort adults, The Powers That Be must've had a big ol' set of steel balls to let this one out - hopefully Disney will be as courageous with the new project.

EXCLUSIVE: Joseph Kosinski's 'Black Hole' To Begin Script Work Soon, Will Preserve Maximilian, Cygnus And More

As "Tron Legacy" director Joseph Kosinski plows forward with post-production work on his 3-D sequel to the 1982 sci-fi classic, he's also keeping his eye on bringing to the big screen a new version of another decades' old sci-fi touchstone: "Black Hole."

In an exclusive interview with MTV News, Kosinski gave us insight into the film's central concepts and revealed that Travis Beacham ("Clash of the Titans") will begin work on a script in early 2010.

"We've got a really strong idea and concept for the film," Kosinski said early in January. "The title alone has tremendous amount of potential. We've got a really talented writer on it named Travis Beecham. We're just getting started on the script in the next few months."

The 1979 original focused on a ship on a deep space mission and its encounter with a lost vessel called the Cygnus, home to a lone scientist in charge of an army of robots (including the hulking red killer Maximilian) who turn out to be the ship's missing crew. Kosinski's updated version won't pick up after the events of the first film, but rather will rework them with a vastly bigger budget and a deeper understanding of the science behind black holes.

"It won't be a sequel like 'Tron,'" he explained. "This one will be a reimagining. For me, it would be taking ideas and iconic elements that struck me as timeless and cool and preserving them while weaving a new story around them that's a little more '2001.'"

Among the elements Kosinski intends to keep are the red robot, the gnarly death of Cygnus' top dog Dr. Alex Durant (played originally by Anthony Perkins) and the design of the ship.

"I saw 'Black Hole' as a little kid," said Kosinski. "What sticks out most is the robot Maximilian. The blades and the vicious killing of Anthony Perkins. That freaked me out and that's definitely going to be an element that will be preserved. The design of the Cygnus ship is one of the most iconic spaceships ever put to film. From a conceptual point of view, we know so much more about black holes now, the crazy things that go on as you approach them due to the intense gravitational pull and the effects on time and space. All that could provide us with some really cool film if we embrace it in a hard science way

Da Badtaste:

Joseph Kosinski parla di The Black Hole e Oblivion

The Black Hole, uscito, sempre Made in Disney, nell'ormai lontano 1979.

Si, The Black Hole è vivo.

Similarly, Jon Spaihts – best known for penning the original Prometheus script draft – is actively putting together a new script for Kosinski’s Black Hole project. However, it remains unclear just how much material Spaihts will be carrying over from either the previous draft written by Travis Beacham (Pacific Rim) or the original 1979 film.

Kosinski did shed some light on the similarities to the 1970s version, when ET asked him if he considers Black Hole to be a remake or reboot:

“I guess I would call it a reboot because the fundamental concept is there, but we are taking it in our own direction.”

A few years back, Kosinski revealed that he had plans to approach Black Hole from a contemporary “hard science way,” by incorporating the many advances in astrophysics and gains in understanding of how gravitational forces work made by the scientific community over the past three decades of research. Many of the sci-fi ideas featured in Spaihts’ Alien: Engineers draft are modern, yet also quite allegorical in nature (similar to the concepts in Legacy), so there’s a good chance that he and Kosinski will use a similar hard science (fiction) angle to update The Black Hole‘s themes.

Let us know how you feel about how TRON 3 is shaping up and whether you are more, less, or equally intrigued to see a modern-day hard science approach to The Black Hole premise (in the comments section, that is).

Dal sito The Disinsider:

Joseph Kosinski’s ‘Black Hole’ Remake Was Canned Due to ‘Interstellar’ Similarities

Director Joseph Kosinski is getting a lot of buzz thanks to his newest biggest screen hit Top Gun: Maverick, which recently hit a billion dollars at the box office. The feat will certainly make Kosinski a big name amongst studios for their biggest projects.

In 2009, it was reported that Kosinski and his Tron: Legacy team were set to tackle a remake of Disney’s 1979 Sci-fi/Adventure, The Black Hole. Since then, the project has been in limbo at the studio, which included a rewrite from Jon Spaihts (Prometheus), before being ultimately canned. However, Kosinski is still mulling over his interest in reviving it if that opportunity presents itself, as he’d like to reunite with Disney.

While speaking with TheWrap, Joseph Kosinski shared his love for the project, the trade revealed that his version shared “too many similarities” to Christopher Nolan’s space drama Interstellar which ultimately killed it. That said, Kosinski says he is still very much interested in reviving the project:

“I still feel like that movie is one of the most unique that Disney’s ever made, the original, I mean. It’s wild. The idea of a journey to a black hole is still one of those things that is very intriguing because it’s not science fiction. They really exist, and all the effects that happen around them are real physics. So there is a great story to be told about that journey. I just, at this point, I haven’t figured out what that would be for me yet.”

Disney’s The Black Hole plot is as follows, in the future, a spaceship dubbed the USS Palomino is on its way back to Earth when it discovers another ship that had been assumed missing, the USS Cygnus. Kate McCrae (Yvette Mimieux), a scientist aboard the Palomino, learns that it’s the same ship upon which her father had served as a crew member. When the Palomino’s crew boards the Cygnus, they are met by Dr. Reindhardt (Maximilian Schell) and a bizarre, faceless army who plan to be the first people ever to explore a black hole.

The film also starred Anthony Perkins, Robert Forster, Joseph Bottoms, and Ernest Borgnine. With a production budget of $20 million, plus another $6 million for advertising, it was at the time the most expensive picture ever produced by Disney. The film had a record opening weekend for Disney with a gross of $4.7 million from 889 theatres. During its theatrical release, the movie grossed $35.8 million in the United States and Canada, from which it returned $25 million in box office rentals. Despite low reviews, the film has since become a cult classic.
