Disney Mulling Pivot Of ‘Pinocchio’, ‘Peter Pan’, ‘Cruella’ From Theatrical To Disney+ Premieres

EXCLUSIVE: No final decision has been made, but Deadline hears that the uncertainty of the future theatrical marketplace has Disney looking at launching a number of its upcoming tentpole family films on Disney+ instead of the theatrical release bows that were envisioned when the films were developed and green lit. At this point, the films being discussed to make that pivot are Cruella, the Craig Gillespie-directed live-action re-imaging of the animated classic that stars Emma Stone and Emma Thompson; the Robert Zemeckis-directed Pinocchio that has Tom Hanks starring; and Peter Pan and Wendy, the David Lowery-directed film that has Grown-ish star Yara Shahidi set to play Tinker Bell.

It isn’t clear at the moment whether the films will be offered free to Disney+ subscribers, as with the Pete Docter-directed Pixar film Soul, or for a premium charge as was done with Mulan. Still, it’s a bombshell development in the fast-changing theatrical/streaming landscape.

The studio is looking at every option, and everything is under consideration and contingency planning, as Disney makes plans to lean in heavily on its direct-to-consumer initiative and towards continuing to build the juggernaut Disney+, whose subscriber numbers brightened up a last quarter that would otherwise have been bleak because of the wallop that theme parks and live entertainment took from the COVID pandemic.

The direct-to-consumer segment has soared this year by 41%, per the most recently reported quarter. Disney+ subscriptions grew to a remarkable 73.7 million as of early October, helped by the Star Wars spinoff series The Mandalorian and the Disney+ PVOD release of Mulan.

While this is well behind the 195 million or so paying customers of Netflix, that rival had a mighty head start around the world. But the lightning quick growth of Disney+ is enough to make the corporation see the benefits of a direct-to-consumer content business. The payoff will come not only in the subscription fees, but also in the stock price, sources said.

Deadline’s reveal of Disney’s plans comes just after Warner Bros made the announcement that its sequel Wonder Woman 1984 will not wait out the pandemic, but rather will premiere simultaneously on the HBO Max streaming site along with theaters on Christmas Day. Putting a sequel to a smash hit DC title is reflective of a disruptive moment. Sources said that Disney will likely lean heavily into series generated from the Marvel, Lucasfilm and other silos, but at this point, it is keeping some of its plum titles for release when the theatrical market recovers. The Marvel film Black Widow with Scarlett Johansson is not being contemplated for a streaming bow, Deadline hears.

Per un film che uscirà a maggio credo risulti precocemente fuori tempo massimo per dei premi che verranno assegnati circa un anno dopo.

L'uscita di Maggio è stata scelta per ottenere la premiere a Cannes, ma se dovesse saltare la diffusione cinematografica probabilmente rimanderanno il film alla fine del 2021.

Da quanto trapelato sin da ora, questo progetto nasce anche per ottenere consensi della critica, e sicuramente aspira ai premi, quantomeno quelli tecnici (costumi, scenografie, montaggio ecc.).

While the studio will solidify what Deadline revealed recently — that the Tom Hanks-starrer Pinocchio, Peter Pan and the Emma Stone-starrer Cruella will bypass movie theaters to become Disney+ releases — the studio will also announce new projects from Marvel, Lucasfilm and Pixar that will encompass TV as well as theatrical. It will be a gesture toward not abandoning the exhibitors.

Parleranno principalmente di questioni economiche... poi qualche annuncio Marvel e Lucasfilm e per l'animazione Pixar verrà fatto.
Crediamo che dicano che Pinocchio, Peter Pan e Cruella saranno su Disney + e annunceranno l'inizio delle riprese della Sirenetta che sono imminenti.
Altro non crediamo dicano perchè non è nel listino e solitamente dicono poco . Annunciassero qualche novità in ambito animato e anche qualche remake in lavorazione (Biancaneve, ecc), sarebbe bello... però non contateci troppo.
Qualche novità Disney+ dovranno dirla.
Non crediamo ci siano tante novità in ambito animazione Disney cinematografica (un accenno a Raya lo faranno ma pensiamo sia finito lì). Di solito è così... già annunciano poco e niente ai D23 figuriamoci qua dove le questioni principali sono gli aspetti economici...
facessero annunci in grande stile come nel 2008 quando annunciarono il listino film in uscita sarebbe bello ma non lo vediamo fattibile...

Notizia ufficiale: Cruella arriverà nel 2021.

Si specula che possa essere disponibile al rilascio su disney+; tuttavia, sembrerebbe l'unico live action remake confermato anche per un'uscita cinematografica (limitata?) durante l'investor day.

Mi aspetto una premiere con i fiocchi al festival di Cannes (fuori concorso), COVID permettendo.
Qui potete trovare il depliant ufficiale dei prodotti disney in uscita ove per Cruella, a differenza degli altri live action, non viene menzionato esplicitamente disney+.

Live-Action “Cruella” to Debut in Theaters May 28, 2021
Disney’s next live-action adaptation film, Cruella, is officially coming to theaters May 28, 2021. It was originally scheduled to release this month, but was delayed during production in 2019.

While the May 28, 2021 date has been expected, the format of release was still in question. A tweet by Rotten Tomatoes today claims the movie will be released in theaters, dispelling speculation that the movie would bypass theaters entirely and premier on Disney+. The latest Disney and Pixar feature film, Soul, skipped cineplexes and debuted on Disney+ on Christmas day. A dual debut is not out of the question, however, as Warner Bros. released Wonder Woman 1984 both in theaters and on HBOMax on the same day, also December 25.

The film follows a young Cruella de Vil (played by Emma Stone) from One Hundred and One Dalmatians in the 1970s (although the original novel and film took place in the 50s).

One plot summary describes the film as follows:

Before she becomes Cruella de Vil?

Teenaged Estella has a dream. She wishes to become a fashion designer, having been gifted with talent, innovation, and ambition all in equal measures. But life seems intent on making sure her dreams never come true. Having wound up penniless and orphaned in London at twelve, four years later Estella runs wild through the city streets with her best friends and partners-in-(petty)-crime, Horace and Jasper, two amateur thieves. When a chance encounter vaults Estella into the world of the young rich and famous, however, she begins to question the existence she’s built for herself in London and wonders whether she might, indeed, be destined for more after all. When an up-and-coming rockstar commissions Estella to design him a signature piece, she begins to feel as though she has truly arrived. But what is the cost of keeping up with the fast crowd– and is it a price Estella is willing to pay?

Emma Stone will be playing Cruella De Vil, with Paul Walter Hauser and Joel Fry as Horace and Jasper. Emma Thompson plays the Baroness and Mark Strong plays the Baron. Emily Beechman is likely playing Anita, and Dev Patel has been approached to play Raj, a.k.a. Roger. Glenn Close, who played Cruella in the 1996 live-action adaptation and 2000 sequel, is a producer of the project. Craig Gillespie directed.

Sembra un film molto anarchico a giudicare dal logo, che mi ricorda un pò V per Vendetta e la sinistra A del serial Pretty Little Liars; già adoro la scelta di farla correre come una pazza su quella moto d'epoca come da memoria dal Classico.
