Kyle Patrick Alvarez to Direct ‘Crater’ For Disney+

13 Reasons Why director Kyle Patrick Alvarez has signed on to direct Crater for Disney+, Deadline has learned. The project will be overseen by Disney’s live-action team, with hopes of starting production this Spring.

Shawn Levy (Night at the Museum) will produce through his 21 Laps Entertainment banner along with Dan Levine. Levy is also producing a new animated Night at the Museum movie for Disney+. He is also directing 20th Century Studios’ Free Guy, starring Ryan Reynolds and Jodi Comer.

Crater is described as a coming-of-age story in the vein of “Stand By Me,” set on a moon colony. After the death of his father, a boy growing up on a lunar mining colony takes a trip to explore a mysterious crater, along with his four best friends, prior to being permanently relocated to another planet. John Griffin (The Twilight Zone) penned the script.

The film was originally going to be directed by Levy when the project was originally in development at 20th Century Fox. Once the merger with Disney finalized, Levy decided to focus on producing the project, Disney has fast-tracked the project with hopes of 2022 on Disney+.

‘Gifted’ Breakout Mckenna Grace To Star in ‘Crater’ For Disney Plus And 21 Laps Entertainment

EXCLUSIVE: Mckenna Grace is set to star in the film Crater for Disney Plus with Kyle Patrick Alvarez on board to direct. The film will be overseen by Disney’s live-action team with hopes to shoot in the spring. Shawn Levy and Dan Levine will produce through their 21 Laps Entertainment banner.

Crater is described as a coming-of-age story in the vein of Stand By Me, set on a moon colony. After the death of his father, a boy growing up on a lunar mining colony takes a trip to explore a mysterious crater, along with his four best friends, prior to being permanently relocated to another planet. John Griffin penned the script.

Grace will play one of the best friends.

The film was originally set up at 20th Century with Levy circling the directing chair but after it moved to Disney Levy chose to focus on producing duties as the film gained momentum.

Grace has been busy since her star-making role opposite Chris Evans in the Searchlight pic Gifted. She can be seen next is as a new addition to the upcoming season of Hulu’s Handmaid’s Tale, which premieres April 26th. She follows that with Universal’s animated pic Spirit Untamed, which bows this May.

In November she will be seen as one of the stars of Sony’s highly anticipated Ghostbusters: Afterlife, playing one of the new members of the rebooted team. She is repped by CAA and attorney Stewart Brookman.

Other credits include guest-starring roles on Raven’s Home, S.W.A.T. and Criminal Minds. He is repped by APA, and Hines and Hunt Entertainment.

Barratt was most recently seen in Responsible Child and also has the upcoming Apple series Invasion. Hong can be seen next in Hulu’s Only Murders In The Building. Both are repped by Paradigm with Barratt also being repped by Sylvia Young Agency in the UK, and Hansen, Jacobson, Teller, et al.
