- Click |

Box Office: ‘Mulan’ Eyes Huge $85 Million-Plus Opening Weekend Despite fears that coronavirus could impact moviegoing across the globe, Disney’s “Mulan” is expected to pull off solid opening weekend ticket sales at the domestic box office. According to early estimates, the live-action remake should collect $85 million when it debuts in U.S. theaters on March 27, though some tracking services predict that number could reach above $90 million. The higher end of that range would put it in the company of the studio’s recent “Aladdin” reboot, which debuted to $91.5 million last May. “Mulan” cost $200 million to make, meaning it’ll need to bank on global appeal to turn a profit. That could prove problematic since theaters in China, where “Mulan” was expected to strongly resonate, have been closed due to threats of coronavirus. So far, the U.S. box office doesn’t appear to be threatened by the novel virus that’s infected and killed thousands. Though coronavirus has already hurt the movie business in China, South Korea and Italy, Disney has no plans to alter the release date for “Mulan.” However, a studio spokesperson said the film will open in certain foreign markets at a later date. It was announced on Wednesday that the launch of the James Bond movie “No Time to Die” would be postponed, from April to November, because so many multiplexes are closed in areas like China, where the disease has been the most prevalent. So far, no other major movies have plans to postpone or alter release plans. Niki Caro directed “Mulan,” which stars Chinese actress Liu Yifei as the eponymous heroine. Like the original animated version, “Mulan” centers on a warrior who disguises herself as a man to spare her elderly father from having to serve in the army. It’s the first of Disney’s live-action remakes to be rated PG-13, due to sequences of violence. The non-PG rating could limit younger audiences from buying tickets. Disney’s live-action remakes have debuted to mostly huge commercial success. “The Lion King,” “Aladdin” and “Beauty and the Beast” all cracked $1 billion at the global box office, while “The Jungle Book” grossed over $950 million. However, “Dumbo” ended its theatrical run with $353 million worldwide, disappointing receipts — if only by Disney’s standards. Dal sito The Hollywood Reporter: 'Mulan' Tracking for Heroic $85M-Plus U.S. Opening Disney's latest live-action remake of the classic animated movie opens in late March. Disney's Mulan is targeting a heroic U.S. debut of $85 million or more, according to early tracking. If those projections hold, the movie would score the biggest opening of 2020 to date (the current crown holder is Bad Boys for Life with $62.5 million). Bullish box office observers believe Mulan ultimately has a shot of matching, or exceeding, Aladdin's $91.5 million domestic launch in summer 2019, based on the strength of tracking. Directed by Niki Caro and featuring an all-Asian cast, Mulan stars Chinese actress Liu Yifei as the titular heroine Hua Mulan, who disguises herself as a man in order to spare her elderly father from having to join the military. The $200 million tentpole, which rides into theaters on March 27, boasts strong awareness among general audiences and families and has three weeks left in which to make its final marketing push. It is the first of Disney's live-action remakes to carry a PG-13 rating, versus a PG. To date, surveys from the various Hollywood tracking services don't indicate any slowdown in moviegoing in the U.S. because of the coronavirus, which has crippled the box office in China — where Mulan is counting on sizable returns — South Korea and Italy. Disney has decided to stick to its overall global release plan for Mulan instead of shifting to a later date. On Wednesday, upcoming James Bond movie No Time to Die became the first Hollywood tentpole to move — in this case, from April to November — because of the economic impact of the virus. So far, Bond is a lone wolf. In addition to Mulan, March event pic A Quiet Place Part II isn't relocating. The Quiet Place sequel is tracking for a strong $60 million-plus start over the March 20-22 weekend. |

Dal sito DeadLine:
‘Mulan’ Eyes $80M-$90M+ Opening On Tracking In The Wake Of Coronavirus Stateside Fears Ramping Up Disney’s Mulan boarded tracking this morning and is seeing a 3-day domestic start around $85M when it hits theaters on March 27. Some believe the live action remake of the 1998 musical animated pic has a shot to get to $100M+ based on tracking diagnostics and comparative titles, but the looming outbreak of the coronavirus stateside brings uncertainty in regards to how much it will damper grosses. Exhibition sources told Deadline yesterday they were already lowering their projections for upcoming pics in the wake of MGM/Eon/Universal’s No Time to Die moving off its April 10 date for Thanksgiving. Even though no theaters have closed, there’s a worry that business may be slow, and we’ll see by the end of an event-filled March of Disney/Pixar’s Onward, Paramount’s A Quiet Place Part II, and Disney’s Mulan if that’s the case, and if other event titles move. NATO issued a statement to quell exhibition fears yesterday after No Time to Die moved, saying ““The movie business is simultaneously global and local. All theaters in the U.S. and Canada and the vast majority of movie theaters around the world remain open with strong ticket sales. The decision to delay the release of the James Bond movie “No Time to Die” is very unique to that company and that movie. Conversations with other movie distributors confirm that a strong slate of global and local titles will continue to be released theatrically in all territories except those few countries most affected by the virus. Cinemas will remain open around the world with strong attendance, in line with local conditions, and in communication with local health officials.” The Niki Caro directed movie has a first choice among all audiences that’s significantly higher than such Disney live action reboots Aladdin ($91.5M) and The Jungle Book, ($103.2M) but lower than The Lion King ($191.8M) and Beauty and the Beast ($174.7M). Mulan is strong, natch, with women and Asian audiences. Females over 25 are a bit stringer than females over. While Mulan was built to dominate in China, particularly with its star Liu Yifei being a staunch nationalist (she supported the Hong Kong Police’s force executed against protesters on the Chinese mirco-blogging site Weibo during last August’s protests in the city), it will of course won’t be able to go day and date with the domestic release due the exhibition structure being closed in the PRC due to the coronavirus. Japan and South Korea are also not a part of the opening suite for Mulan given the COVID-19 virus. Meanwhile, domestic estimates for Onward are down to $47M for this upcoming weekend from $50M earlier this week as headlines amp the unknown scare around coronavirus. Previews start at 6PM tonight. California issued a statewide emergency yesterday, while Los Angeles, the biggest moviegoing capital in the nation next to New York City, saw its county declare a local and public state of emergency yesterday. Key markets launching with Onward‘s domestic include France (which has some cinemas closed), the UK, Russia, Brazil, Mexico and Germany where the Tom Holland-Chris Pratt feature premiered at the Berlin Film Festival. Australia joins in April in addition to Japan, Korea and Italy. |

Le recensioni sono positive, come tutte quelle dei live actions Disney, benché la maggior parte degli stessi abbia una qualità davvero discutibile.
Resterò scettico finché non lo vedrò, di certo, però, sembra interessante. |

Commenti ottimi, fanno ben sperare!
