Peccato.

'Zootopia 2' Announced at Disney

'Zootopia 2' was one of three anticipated sequels announced.

After a long wait, a sequel to the critically acclaimed 2016 film Zootopia is finally in the works. Disney CEO, Bob Iger, revealed the news during Disney's Q1 earnings call. Upon release, Zootopia made over $1 billion at the global box office, and a sequel seemed all but certain. However, there was no official confirmation until now – 7 years later.

Zootopia is not the only acclaimed animated movie getting sequel love from Disney. Iger revealed that sequels to Frozen and Toy Story are also in the works. “Today I’m so pleased to announce that we have sequels in the works from our animation studios to some of our most popular franchises, Toy story, Frozen and Zootopia. We’ll have more to share about these productions soon. But this is a great example of how we’re leaning into our unrivaled brands and franchises,” Iger explained.

Beyond its charming story, 2016's Zootopia was particularly commended for its cast. The animated film had the vocal talents of Ginnifer Goodwin, Jason Bateman, Jenny Slate, J. K. Simmons, Octavia Spencer, Alan Tudyk, Idris Elba, and Shakira in its favor. Bonnie Hunt, Nate Torrence, Don Lake, and Tommy Chong rounded off the talented cast. It remains to be seen which of the main cast will return for the sequel.

It's exciting to learn that the world of Zootopia will be expanding further. Disney previously released Zootopia+, a series of shorts which followed three sets of characters from the original film – the Sloths, the Tiger dancers and the mobster Shrews. The six-episode series was a light-hearted and fun addition to the franchise which arrived in November 2022 to the delight of fans. Zootopia+ was not be the first of its kind on the streaming platform. Back in August 2022, Disney+ released I Am Groot, a series of similar format, which followed the MCU character through five critically acclaimed short episodes.

An unconventional entry to the buddy-cop genre, Zootopia, which was directed by Jared Bush, was lauded for its brilliance and thoughtful approach to its subject matter. Collider’s own review stated, “Through it’s clever, endearing characters, hilarious jokes, and honest sentiment, Zootopia comes away as a film that’s not only a joy to watch, but also one with a message that couldn’t feel more relevant right now.” The review also referred to the film as “rich, deep, and textured in a way you would rarely expect from a family film.” With such glowing praise, it is easy to see why the excitement is almost palpable for the upcoming series.

While there is no word yet on when the sequel will arrive, but it will be interesting to see where the movie will take the story next.

e Cartelera: The Disney legacy is very much alive, not only with live action remakes or nods like the scene of the princesses in ' Ralph Breaks the Internet ' and other Easter Eggs, but also projects like the ' Tiana and the toad '. Have you ever considered going back to one of the most classic films, from the Golden Age or the Renaissance, and making an animated sequel in high-budget feature film format?

Jennifer Lee: I love that Disney+ allows us to introduce experimentation and freshness while also exploring our legacy. Combining celebration and narrative innovation. In that sense we can play more with the Disney+ series. We're doing the ' Moana ' series and it's been a lot of fun, I love it. 'Tiana' is a new world for her, a new direction and a new voice. I think it's a very good platform to start playing with things that have meant a lot to many of us.
For me, it is also recognizing that there is no turning back, only moving forward stronger and stronger. How technology has allowed us to maintain the importance of traditional animation through the artists is what excites me the most. There is a balance between the sequels and the original content. There are more 'Frozen' and more ' Zootropolis ' on the way because they invite their stories to grow, the filmmakers want to expand them.
But we also have a wonderful list of originals from a whole new, diverse and different generation of filmmakers. New types of stories. That's why we have to keep pushing the original movies. Regarding the stories of the past: if the right story comes along and the right director fights for it, it will happen.

Grace Randolph @GraceRandolph:

#Zootopia2 is closer than we thought!

I heard they had their first test screening today, and it’s the best first test screening ever for #DisneyAnimation

Uffa , altri sequel... Fatto su Zootropolis ha più senso che per altri film, però è sempre un more of the same... sad.gif

Parla il produttore del film:

Dal sito The Direct:

Zootopia 2: Disney Exec Promises Sequel Will Be 'As Good Or Better' Than First Movie (Exclusive)

According to a Disney Animation producer, Zootopia 2 will be “as good or better” than the original film.

The first movie, starring Ginnifer Goodwin and Jason Bateman, was released on March 4, 2016. Since then, the only other stories audiences have gotten in that world came in the form of a short series on Disney+ titled Zootopia+, which debuted on November 9, 2022.

Thankfully, a proper sequel was announced in February 2023 alongside Frozen 3 and Toy Story 5. But besides knowing about the mere existence of the long-awaited sequel, nothing else is known about Zootopia 2.

Zootopia 2 Will One-Up Original Disney Film

While talking exclusively to The Direct’s Russ Milheim about his latest Disney Animated short Once Upon a Studio, Brad Simonsen offered an update on the highly anticipated Zootopia 2.

Simonsen, who produced the original 2016 animated movie, shared how he “know[s] that this next one’s going to take it to another level” compared to the original and how it’ll be just as “good or better” than the first:

“We're all super excited about it. And it's a world that I was part of the first movie, and it was one of the most amazing experiences in my life, to be honest. And I know that this next one's going to take it to another level and be, as you know, as good or better than the first. So we're super excited about that project.”

What Can Fans Expect From Zootopia 2?

While Zootopia 2 seems like an obvious movie for Disney, it is strange that it took so long for the studio to get the ball rolling. But what might a proper sequel offer audiences?

Fans should expect to see Ginnifer Goodwin’s Judy Hopps and Jason Bateman’s Nick Wilde return. Beyond that, the creatives have a wide berth for whatever the next movie will look like.

Perhaps some new types of animals could be introduced into Zootopia, like reptiles or marine life. It would also be neat to see primates explored; they were purposefully left out of the first movie to further the divide between the animals seen on screen and humans themselves.

It could also be fun to see urban legends, like Bigfoot or the Yeti, appear. Maybe Disney can go as far as including fantastical creatures, like dragons or unicorns.

For fans looking for new content from the franchise sooner, make sure to make a trip to Shanghai Disneyland later this year to visit its upcoming Zootopia-themed land and new attraction.

While Zootopia 2 doesn’t currently have a release date, fans can check out Zootopia+ on Disney+, which contains a few new stories set in the colorful world of the original film.
