Dal sito Hollywood Reporter:

Disney Plans Musical 'Oliver Twist' With Ice Cube, 'Hamilton' Director (Exclusive)

Get ready for Ice Cube as Fagin.

Disney Studios is teaming with Ice Cube and Thomas Kail, the Tony-winning director of Hamilton, for a modern and musical take on Charles Dickens’ Oliver Twist.

Marc Platt, the veteran movie producer who also was behind Broadway’s hit musical Wicked, and Jeff Kwatinetz of The Firm are producing. Cube also will produce via his Cube Vision banner.

Oliver Twist is one of Dickens’ most famous works and tells of an orphan boy who moves from a life as an exploited child laborer to being under the wings of Fagin, a leader of a gang of London pickpockets. Hardship, murders and secrets waiting to be revealed follow the boy.

The popular story was already adapted by Disney as an animated movie, 1988’s Oliver and Company. But perhaps the biggest impact on popular culture has been through the never-ending iterations of the stage musical Oliver!

The new Oliver Twist will be a modern musical with sources describing it as crossing many genres, including hip-hop. Cube and Kwatinetz are writing the treatment, with Cube attached to play Fagin.

The project is in able hands with Cube, the former co-founder of seminal rap group N.W.A turned actor and producer, most recently producing Straight Outta Compton and Ride Along 2. Cube next stars in Fist Fight, the New Line comedy which he also executive produced that is set to open Feb. 17.

Kail is known for collaborating with Lin-Manuel Miranda on the rapper-composer’s musicals In the Heights and Hamilton. He also directed Grease Live!, Fox’s live TV take on the classic movie musical that starred Julianne Hough and Vanessa Hudgens and that was produced by Platt (whose next film outing is the upcoming Ryan Gosling-Emma Stone musical La La Land).

Cube is repped by UTA, the Firm and Ziffren Brittenham. Kail is repped by WME.

Mia prima reazione leggendo 'Oliver Twist': " 'n'artro?!"
Speriamo di no...

Danny Strong Hired To Script Walt Disney’s Remake Of ‘Oliver!’

by Anita Busch
January 18, 2018 1:24pm

EXCLUSIVE: Game Change and The Butler screenwriter Danny Strong has been tapped to script a Disney remake of the beloved musical Oliver! which has Thomas Kail, a Tony winner for Hamilton, directing. Marc Platt (La La Land) and Cube Vision’s Jeff Kwatinetz and Ice Cube (Straight Outta Compton) are producing for the Walt Disney Co. While publicists came forth saying that it was a musical version of a public domain title Oliver Twist, all those who Deadline spoke with said, ‘it’s basically a remake of Oliver!”

Oliver! is the beloved musical of both stage and screen based on Lionel Bart’s take on the Dickens novel as will the Disney movie. The soundtrack became a bestseller with favorites as “Who Will Buy?,” “Consider Yourself” and “I’d Do Anything.” The original film won four Academy Awards including for Best Picture and Best Director. Oliver! debuted in London in 1960 before moving to Broadway where it won a Tony in 1963 for Best Original Score.

The 1968 film adaptation directed by Carol Reed and starring Mark Lester, Oliver Reed and Jack Wild, won five Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director and for its soundtrack. The re-imagined Oliver! features a cross-genre soundtrack that will include hip-hop.

Disney’s EVP of Production, Tendo Nagenda is overseeing the project for the studio.

Strong, who began his career as a character actor on the hit series Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Gilmore Girls, burst onto the screenwriting scene with 2008’s award-winning HBO film Recount, then garnered an Emmy for 2012’s Game Change and followed that with 2013’s The Butler directed by Lee Daniels. He co-wrote the final two Hunger Games movies, and, with Daniels, co-created the Emmy-winning musical drama Empire for Fox.

Last year he made his directorial debut with Rebel in the Rye, the J.D. Salinger biopic which he also wrote, and that premiered at the 2017 Sundance Film Festival. A self-confessed “musical theatre nerd,” Strong has recently finished a new book for Chess, the 1988 Tim Rice/ABBA London hit, which will run February 14-18 at the Kennedy Center.

Platt is the the king of the modern-day musical. He was the producer behind the Oscar nominated musical La La Land and the Oscar nominated drama Bridge of Spies. He also produced Mary Poppins Returns and is producing Aladdin for Disney. He is also producing the feature film version of Wicked. In TV, he produced Grease Live! and A Christmas Story Live.

Cube originally targeted a musical remake of Oliver Twist. He has proven himself as an actor, writer, director and producer with both commercial and critical fare such as the successful Ride Along franchise as well as the critical favorite Straight Outta Compton.

Strong is repped by The Gotham Group, CAA and Jackoway Tyerman.

Oliver! Guess which Harry Potter star is set to play Fagin in the musical remake?
OLIVER! is getting a musical movie remake, with Harry Potter’s Fantastic Beasts star Eddie Redmayne set to play Fagin.

The 1968 classic, is one of the best loved musical on film and now it looks like its getting a Les Miserables-style remake.

One of the most iconic characters in the movie was Ron Moody’s Fagin, Charles Dickens’ famous crook who gives Oliver Twist shelter in exchange for being a pickpocket.

According to The Sun, it looks like Fantastic Beasts’ Eddie Redmayne could be playing the criminal in Oliver!

A film source said: ““Eddie has always wanted to play the part of Fagin.”

They continued: “It’s a role that has been close to him since he was a child so this is a great opportunity and he’s keen.

“He was in the stage production of Oliver! directed by Sam Mendes when he was ten but didn’t get to be part of the gang and he has never given up on that dream.

“Eddie thoroughly enjoyed the challenge of singing live during filming for Les Mis and is excited at the prospect of doing it all over again in this.”

Meanwhile Adele has been approached to play Nancy, meaning the two could be singing a rendition of I’d Do Anything together.

The Oliver! remake is being produced by Sir Cameron Mackintosh and Working Title Films, who worked on the Les Miserables adaption that Eddie starred in.

For now the 35-year-old star is working on the second of five outings in the Fantastic Beasts movies.

Oliver! REMAKE: Will Eddie Redmayne and Adele star in Disney’s Dickens musical?
OLIVER! the musical, based on Charles Dickens’ Oliver Twist is getting a remake, but will Eddie Redmayne and Adele star?

The 1968 movie classic is on TV this afternoon and it turns out Disney are remaking it.

In January this year Deadline reported that the House of Mouse have hired Game Change and The Butler screenwriter Danny Strong to pen the Oliver! remake.

Based on Dickens’ Oliver Twist, the Victorian tale follows an orphan boy who ends up joining a gang of boy thieves led by Fagin.

Some of the best songs from Lionel Bart’s musical included Who Will Buy?, Consider Yourself, I’d Do Anything and You’ve Got To Pick A Pocket Or Two.

Last September a film source told The Sun that Eddie Redmayne was eyeing the role of Fagin.

The insider said: “Eddie has always wanted to play the part of Fagin. It’s a role that has been close to him since he was a child so this is a great opportunity and he’s keen.

However Deadline reports that Ice Cube is attached to play Fagin, although perhaps Eddie could still win the role.

Meanwhile Adele is alleged to have been in talks to Nancy.

A source close to the singer to The Sun: ““It would be a major part for her and she’s seriously considering it.

“She’s talked about Angelo being her number one priority and she sees this as a role that he could appreciate too. It would be a new challenge for her but one she would definitely be up for.”

The Oliver! remake is being produced by Sir Cameron Mackintosh and Working Title Films, who worked on the Les Miserables adaption that Eddie starred in.

Meanwhile Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell director Toby Haynes is set to direct.

Eccomi, la polemicona di turno è tornata. Daje! eheheh.gif

Adele Has To Audition If She Wants Part In Disney Movie

Adele is being made to audition for the movie remake of 'Oliver!'.

She is wanted by Disney to portray Nancy in a new film adaptation of the hit Charles Dickens 1837 novel.

However, she's not getting any special treatment as she'll have to fight for the part - like everyone else - because they want to make sure she can act and sing. The singing probably won’t be a problem, but will she audition? It would appear she was under the impression she had been offered the part sans audition.

La notizia è tratta dal sito DailyMail:

Disney want Adele to play Nancy in upcoming Oliver Twist musical movie... but she'll have to AUDITION like everyone else
She's already got an Oscar under her belt, for providing James Bond movie Skyfall with it's eponymous theme song.

But music superstar Adele is yet to lend her singing, as well as her acting skills to the silver screen.

That could be about to change, as Disney are allegedly eyeing her up for the role of Nancy in their movie version of the stage musical Oliver! based on Charles Dickens' classic Oliver Twist.

Yet, because Adele isn't known as an actress, she will have to audition for the role, like everyone else.

As reported by The Sun, Adele, 30, 'will not be seen to be given preferential treatment'.

A source said: 'Bosses are still really keen to get Adele on board. They know she has a world class voice but want to see if she can sustain that while also acting and dancing.

'It’s going to be a huge production and they need to cast the right people with enough stamina.

'There’s been a few bumps in the road on the project but everybody is quietly hopeful that once they get Adele in front of the panel they can move forward.'

Rumour has it that Eddie Redmayne - another Oscar winner - is in the running for the iconic role of Fagin, Oliver's crooked mentor.

The production has been in the works since 2015, and has director Toby Haynes at the helm.

It's thought to take on a similar style to 2012's Les Misérables, which was noted for having its actors - Russell Crowe and Anne Hathaway among them - singing their lyrics live, rather than dubbing them in later in the editing process.

This might prove an extra challenge for the likes of Adele, who is at home in a recording studio or singing on stage, but not used to acting, singing and being filmed.

Redmayne was in fact in Universal's version of Les Misérables as Marius Pontmercy, and is an actor by trade, first and foremost.

This would be Adele's first bash at acting, however.

Oliver Twist was Dickens' second ever novel. Also known by the alternative title The Parish Boy's Progress it was serialised between 1837–1939 before being released as a book in 1939.

The story centres on the titular orphan Oliver who is mistreated at a the workhouse and undertakers he works at as a child. He then escapes, where he meets Fagin, Nancy and The Artful Dodger in London.

Nancy is strongly implied in the story to be a prostitute and a thief. Yet she is an unsung hero, whose concern for Oliver overcomes her loyalty to Bill Sikes and Fagin.

The novel has been adapted into a stage musical and several filmic versions. The 1968 film version starred Ron Moody as Fagin and Shani Wallis as Nancy. It was nominated for 11 Oscars and won six.

Two of the non-musical movie versions include the classic 1948 David Lean film starring Sir Alec Guinness as Fagin, and the much more recent Oliver Twist from gritty director Roman Polanski (2005).

Rumor:

Rita Ora and Adele ‘hoping to pick up a movie role or two’ in Oliver Twist remake

Rita Ora is apparently the top pick for Disney’s upcoming remake of Charles Dickens’ Oliver Twist. The RIP singer is thought to be eyeing the role of pickpocket extraordinaire Artful Dodger, the leader of the gang of child criminals trained by Fagin. Sources close to the film have alleged that Rita has been speaking to producers about the film and she hopes it ‘could really help cement her as a credible actress’. She previously starred in the Fifty Shades Of Grey franchise and Southpaw opposite Jack Gyllenhaal.

‘The film is going to be considerably different from the original, but her character will be loosely based on the Artful Dodger,’ the insider told The Sun. ‘The talks are ongoing but she is eager to make it happen and the casting team have been really impressed with Rita so far. ‘The film is going to be massive and there is already a lot of buzz around it in the industry so it’s very exciting for her.’

The film is being overseen by Sir Cameron Mackintosh and Working Title Films, as well as Thomas Kail, director of West End show Hamilton and acclaimed Broadway producer Marc Platt. It is claimed it will be a ‘fresh retelling’ with new songs.
