'Jungle Book 2' in the Works With Jon Favreau, Justin Marks (Exclusive)

Disney is in talks to bring the creative gang back together for a sequel to its film that opens this Friday.

Disney believes that one of the bare necessities for its movie slate is more "Bare Necessities."

Days before the studio opens its live-action take on The Jungle Book, Disney is already putting together the pieces for a sequel.

Jon Favreau and Justin Marks, who respectively directed and wrote the movie, are in negotiations to return in their roles for a follow-up. Favreau also will produce. Brigham Taylor, who produced the upcoming movie with Favreau, will also return.

The movie, which unbelievably was shot entirely on stages in Los Angeles, adapts the Rudyard Kipling-authored stories that tell of Mowgli, the human boy raised by wolves and who befriends various jungle animals. Disney released a animated take of the material in 1967 that also featured such classic songs as "Trust in Me," "I Wanna Be Like You" and "The Bare Necessities."

The latest pic, a live-action/CG hybrid, assembled an impressive voicecast that includes Bill Murray as Baloo the bear, Ben Kingsley as Begheera the panther, Scarlet Johansson as Kaa the serpent and Lupita Nyong’o as Raksha the mother wolf, among others. Newcomer Neel Sethi makes his feature debut as Mowgli.

Kipling wrote many a Mowgli tale and Disney plans to dig deep into the source material.

The studio has every reason to be high on the new movie. Jungle Book is already generating very strong reviews and currently stands at 100 percent on review aggregating website Rotten Tomatoes.

While it opens Friday in North America (as well as France, Germany, Italy, Spain, the U.K., China, Brazil and Mexico), Jungle Book had an strong rollout this past weekend in a handful of markets in Asia and Latin America. It brought in $31.7 million and opened at No. 1 in all territories. India was the standout with a $8.4 million gross, registering the second-highest industry opening for a Western release there.

Disney’s live-action division, led by president Sean Bailey, has been striking box-office gold with its strategy of reimagining its animated classics into live-action films for contemporary audiences. The studio first took on its fairy tales such as Alice in Wonderland, Maleficent and Cinderella and is now expanding that repertoire. On top of Jungle Book, Disney has Pete’s Dragon, starring Bryce Dallas Howard and Robert Redford, due in August. (It also has Alice in Wonderland sequel Alice Through the Looking Glass set to open in May and Beauty and the Beast starring Emma Watson slated for a March 2017 release.)

Favreau and Marks are repped by CAA. Favreau is additionally repped by law firm Jackoway Tyerman, while Marks is also repped by Madhouse Entertainment and Lichter Grossman.

Disney Officially Announces Maleficent 2, Jungle Book 2 and More!

With director Jon Favreau‘s The Jungle Book number one at the domestic box office for the second week in a row, Walt Disney Pictures has officially updated its release schedule for its upcoming live-action fairy tale films. Along with the new schedule comes a number of project confirmations, including the official announcement of both another Favreau-helmed Jungle Book film and the return of Angelina Jolie in Maleficent 2! The Jungle Book sequel will also see the return of screenwriter Justin Marks, while Linda Woolverton will be back to write Maleficent 2.

Studio insiders say one of the release dates announced Monday will go to The Jungle Book 2, which is already in the works, even as Warner Bros. preps its own Jungle Book for Oct. 19, 2018. Disney won't comment, but it's possible Favreau's sequel could be ready in time for the August or November 2018 slot, putting it in the direct path of the rival Jungle Book, directed by Andy Serkis.

‘The Jungle Book 2’ Will Resurrect Unused Disney Ideas, Explore More Rudyard Kipling Stories [TCA 2018]

During /Film’s interview with screenwriter Justin Marks, creator of Starz’s new series Counterpart, we asked about his screenplay for the developing live-action Jungle Book sequel.

The Jungle Book 2 was announced back in April of 2016, but we haven’t heard much on development since then. Jon Favreau is busy directing a new version of The Lion King in a way similar to how he made The Jungle Book, so it’s tough to say when we might see the sequel. Thankfully, Marks offered some details as to what we might see from the sequel.

Not only is there more Rudyard Kipling material to mine for a sequel, but also unused material from the Disney animated film too. Writer Bill Peet originally developed the 1967 animated version of Jungle Book, but Walt Disney rejected his screenplay, causing Peet to leave the studio. Marks says some of that may make it onto the big screen after all.

“In the second film, the idea is to go further through the Kipling but also go into some of the Disney resources from the ’67 film that maybe didn’t get to see the light of day in the first film,” Marks said. “If you look back to Bill Peet’s work on the original film, some of which was thrown out by Walt Disney, Jon [Favreau] and I really dove deep into the Disney archives to see some of the ideas. We were like, ‘Wait, that’s a great idea. We really need that in the film.’ So we’ve built it out like that.”

The first Favreau-directed film did not complete the Rudyard Kipling story of The Jungle Book. The author wrote a sequel to his own book, and there are plenty of untapped stories to use for the movie.

“There is so much more Kipling to adapt,” Marks said. “I just finished a draft of it quite recently. Even in the first film, we really looked to the other Kipling stories for inspiration, The Elephant and the history and the mythology and the creation of the jungle.”

Kipling’s The Jungle Book also deals with Mowgli’s return to the world of men. That was not how Favreau’s film ended. Will the sequel go there?

“I won’t get into spoilers,” Marks said. “The Kipling [story] ends with Mowgli returning to the man village, returning to man in some way. Obviously we wanted to suspend that at the end of the film, mostly because I felt like in a story of identity and appropriated identity, a boy from one world raised in another, it was important to Jon and it was important to me to tell a story about family being what you make of it, and identity being the people around you and that’s who you are. So it didn’t feel right to send him to another place, at least in the first film. A later film, maybe we reevaluate that.”

The Jungle Book 2 doesn’t have a release date yet, but Counterpart premieres January 21, 2018 on Starz, and we’ll have our full interview with Marks before that.

Mi piacerebbe sapere perché qualcosa che un tempo Walt ha rigettato, d'un tratto diventa grandioso per il sequel... Mah, magari si trattava di un tema o personaggio semplicemente controversi per quegli anni e non considerato adatto per il pubblico di riferimento. Quanto al ripescaggio di idee dai seguiti del romanzo di Kipling, mi auguro non facciano come con "Alice Attraverso lo Specchio". Dove del seguito è stato mantenuto il furbo titolo acchiappa audience, ma che poi si è tradotto nel ripescaggio cameo e inutile di alcuni personaggi (vedi Humpty Dumpty) ma con personaggi poi del tutto inventati (il Tempo) all'interno di un racconto parimenti inventato di sana pianta, che niente ha a che fare con l'opera di Carroll.

Cruella is finally in theaters and on Disney+ with Premier Access. The live-action remakes have been a financial goldmine for Disney, so it’s not shocking that studio has many more projects in various stages of production. So let’s look ahead and see what’s to come.

Remakes for Bambi, Robin Hood, Sword in the Stone, James and the Giant Peach, and a sequel to 2016’s The Jungle Book are also in various stages of development. Though, I am told these projects are much farther away from beginning than the aforementioned films we’ve listed. The studio is also in development on a Prince Anders film for Disney+, as well as the Gaston and Lefou series, and Mulan spin-offs.
