THEATER
Lea Michele to Star in "The Little Mermaid" at the Hollywood Bowl
Thingamabobs? She's got 20!

March 30, 2019

Lea Michele is quite the songstress. Of course, this is a widely known fact as we all remember her Glee days portraying theatre aficionado-turned-star Rachel Berry. Upon hearing her sing “Defying Gravity” from Wicked in one of the early episodes, we became instant lifelong stans, though Lea’s theatrical career started much earlier than that. After Glee came to an end following season six (moment of silence please), Lea went on to do much more acting, including a hit role in the series Scream Queens. But for those who have been dying to see Lea belt her face off once again, things are about to feel so much better.

Hold onto your thingamabobs because Lea is headed to the Hollywood Bowl to star as Ariel in The Little Mermaid. According to Broadway World, Lea be diving under the sea for two performances only on May 17 and 18, where she will perform some of the iconic mermaid’s most memorable songs.

Shaking? Same! But who will play Ursula, the baddest witch of the waters who steals Ariel’s voice? None other than Broadway icon Harvey Fierstein, known for his portrayal of Edna Turnblad in the original cast of Hairspray. The production will also star Cheech Marin as Chef Louis, Peter Gallagher as King Triton (hello Sandy Cohen!), Leo Gallo as Prince Eric, and Ken Page as Sebastian.

Honestly, we have so many questions: Will Lea dye her hair red? Will she move around on rollerblades like in the Broadway production? Will Harvey's version of Ursula leave our poor unfortunate souls rendered speechless? Either way, we’re so excited for this production and the many YouTube videos of Lea’s performance that we will be binge-watching for the rest of eternity.

“The Little Mermaid”, concerto live-to-film per festeggiare i 30 anni del classico Disney

Oltre ai celebri numeri musicali tra cui “Under the Sea”, “Kiss the Girl”, “Poor Unfortunate Souls” e “Part of Your World”, verranno eseguiti anche i brani tratti dal Musical di Broadway “The Little Mermaid”.

‘Little Mermaid’ Swims Back Into Hollywood Fishbowl for a Live-Sung Screening
Lea Michele and Harvey Fierstein join Richard Kraft's updated show.

It was November 17, 1989 when “The Little Mermaid” splashed into theaters. Its arrival loosed a Disney animation tsunami through the 1990s, resulting in a series of beloved films that are now experiencing a lucrative second life with live-action remakes like “Beauty and the Beast” and this month’s “Aladdin.”

“Mermaid” started it all, a lush underwater fantasia that harkened back to Walt Disney’s animated glory days, but — crucially — armed with a catchy, romantic Broadway score by two musicians with the Midas touch: lyricist Howard Ashman and composer Alan Menken. They gave us instant classics like “Under the Sea” and “Part of Your World,” and the music won two Oscars.

The film, and Ashman and Menken’s score, will have a special 30th birthday party this weekend at the Hollywood Bowl, in a lavish projection-production with a live orchestra and songs performed by a cast that includes Lea Michele as Ariel, Harvey Fierstein as Ursula and Cheech Marin as Chef Louis.

It’s the brainchild of director Richard Kraft, who has brought similar spectacles to the Bowl in recent years, from the biannual “The Nightmare Before Christmas” with Danny Elfman to “La La Land” to “Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory.” This is the second time he’s brought “Mermaid” to the venue, after a 2016 production that alternated the original voice of Ariel, Jodi Benson, with Sara Bareilles in the lead role, while also featuring Rebel Wilson as Ursula and John Stamos as Louis.

Besides the cast, the big difference this year is that, in the interim, Kraft started working with the Burbank studio Mousetrappe, who developed a way to map custom animated projections onto the Bowl’s shell.

“I love Disney theme parks so much,” says Kraft. “I love how they do projection shows on their castles, and they take an iconic piece of Disneyland and use it as a canvas to put images on, and storytelling via projections. The Hollywood Bowl is this incredibly iconic structure — it’s the castle of Hollywood — and [we’re] using it as a surface to enhance the movie and make it a more immersive experience.”

The conceit for this year’s “Mermaid” is a night at a drive-in theater, cashing in on the similarities. “It’s a communal experience, outdoors, under the stars, watching a movie,” Kraft says. “There’s also a historic, retro quality of being at the Bowl that’s the same as being at a drive-in. But because this is ‘The Little Mermaid,’ Ursula is going to transform all of it into the Hollywood (Fish)Bowl Dive-In Movie Theater” — meaning that, before and throughout the movie, there will be aquatic-themed versions of movie trailers, concession ads and the like.

Kraft, who by day is a film music agent representing the likes of Elfman and Menken, started producing and directing these shows as a midlife lark, largely inspired by a lifelong obsession with all things Disney. Taking a page out of the company’s theme park M.O., it’s not enough anymore for him to simply screen a movie and have a live orchestra playing the score, a type of event that’s become hugely popular at the Bowl and in symphony halls around the world.

“It’s not just, you’re sitting in a chair and when it’s ready they fire up a movie,” he says. “It’s setting a stage, and immersing the audience into an evening that’s about something of which celebrates the movie ‘The Little Mermaid.’ [Which is] 30 years old, and I suspect most of the audience has already seen it. So why are we doing this at the Hollywood Bowl? And that’s what’s exciting: it isn’t just a live-to-film with an orchestra. It isn’t just a movie night. It isn’t just a concert. It isn’t just a stage production. It’s this hybrid, where the closest I can call it is an ‘experience.’”

With each project, Kraft and Mousetrappe have become more ambitious with the animation on the Bowl’s shell. Rather than repeating characters already on screen, Kraft calls it “living scenery” that can reveal unseen aspects of the story. For example, Ursula’s big number, “Poor Unfortunate Souls,” will be attended by German expressionism — “because the song that Alan Menken and Howard Ashman wrote was very Kurt Weill,” Kraft says. “It’s like, oh, well, Ursula is a singer in a German cabaret, and the visual influences pull from imagery suggested by German masters as well as Salvador Dali. I think Ursula would collect Dali.”

For Chef Louis’ song, “Les Poissons,” Marin will be surrounded by animation inspired by Kraft’s realization that, basically, the character is “an aquatic serial killer. So the visual was referencing like a Tex Avery cartoon — big, bold colors — of what would be inside the mind of a homicidal French chef who loves destroying crustaceans. So it is insane. Because if you think about it, filleting fish is not that far removed from ‘Silence of the Lambs.’”

Disney has to okay all such flights of fancy, but Kraft says that, because he’s such an uber-fan and now has several of these productions under his belt, he knows what not to do.

His only fear is that “I murder something because I’m giving it such a big, loving hug,” he says — “that I’m a clumsy galoot who kills it. And, so far, I don’t think I’ve smothered any of my favorite things with too much love. But maybe one day I shall…”

Menken, who is scoring Disney’s upcoming Rob Marshall-directed remake of “The Little Mermaid” — and is about to start writing new songs with Lin-Manuel Miranda — will appear at the piano for an encore. He’ll be flying in that day from a press junket in Japan to promote the new “Aladdin,” directed by Guy Ritchie, which he scored and also penned new songs for with “La La Land” lyricists Benj Pasek and Justin Paul.

“It was a real reminder,” Kraft says, “that everything Alan touches ends up having so many children and grandchildren. We’re talking about ‘Little Mermaid’ and ‘Aladdin,’ and it’s like I have to remember: are we talking about the original movie, or are we talking about the Broadway show, or are we talking about the touring show, are we talking about the concert, or are we talking about the live-action remake?”

As for live-to-picture events, Kraft wants to keep making them even crazier.

“I think we’re in a new era where [you think about] what does it mean to go see a movie, and what does it mean to have a concert experience of a film?” he says. “The boundaries of it just keep exploding. A few years ago it was just enough to go see a movie and hear the orchestra playing it live. But I think many people, of which I’m just one of them, are now going: No, this is its own art form, and how far can we take it?”

Da LaughinPlace:

Review: “The Little Mermaid” Live-to-Film Concert Experience at the Hollywood Bowl

Thirty years ago this November, Walt Disney Animation Studios delivered into theaters what would become one of the most beloved movie musicals of all time: The Little Mermaid. And this past weekend at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles, a group of contemporary celebrities performed onstage backed by a full orchestra to celebrate the cherished film in an incredibly entertaining way.

“The Little Mermaid: An Immersive Live-to-Film Concert Experience” brought together stars like Glee’s Lea Michele as Ariel, Mrs. Doubtfire’s Harvey Fierstein as Ursula, Tin Cup’s Cheech Marin as Chef Louis, The Nightmare Before Christmas’s Ken Page as Sebastian, The O.C.’s Peter Gallagher as King Triton, musician Leo Gallo as Prince Eric, and multiple-award-winning composer/songwriter Alan Menken to recreate the movie and Broadway musicals biggest moments live in front of the massive Hollywood Bowl audience.

Beyond the sheer amount of starpower present there that evening, one of the biggest highlights of the Hollywood Bowl’s The Little Mermaid experience had to be hearing Menken’s score performed live by the full orchestra, as conducted by Michael Kosarin (Beauty and the Beast / Enchanted / Tangled) while watching the movie projected on three large screens above and to the sides of that famous stage where The Beatles once performed.

Prior to the start of the performance, The Little Mermaid fans in attendance were given literal fans decked with the illustrated logo for the event, though the weather was not quite hot enough to necessitate them. There was also colorful costume contest, and a quirky old-time-Hollywood introduction before the Hollywood Bowl was transformed into the “Hollywood Fish Bowl” for a “Dive-In” evening under the stars. We were also treated to seventeen-year-old piano sensation Emily Bear’s original score to the 1938 Silly Symphony cartoon “Merbabies.”

Intermission was also especially fun, as the organizers of “The Little Mermaid: An Immersive Live-to-Film Concert Experience” had put together a series of hilarious Under-the-Sea-themed pun trailers for other Disney movies such as The Hunchback of Notre Dame (as The Humpback of Notre Dame), Dumbo (as Gumbo), Deadpool (as Tidepool), and TRON (as PRAWN).

All of the celebrity performances were excellent and well-matched with their respective parts, though they only came out to perform during the musical numbers (the rest of the dialogue was presented from the audio of the original film). And though I enjoyed Michele’s interpretation of Ariel’s singing voice and Page’s energetic take on Sebastian, the one true showstopping performance among the evening’s cast came from its unlikeliest member: the gravelly-voiced Fierstein bringing the house down with his “Poor Unfortunate Souls.” Here’s hoping he gets a call for Disney’s upcoming live-action The Little Mermaid reimagining.

Though this excellent and unique “The Little Mermaid: An Immersive Live-to-Film Concert Experience” show was limited to two nights this past Saturday and Sunday, the 2019 Hollywood Bowl season is just beginning and runs through the end of October. For more information and advance ticketing resources, be sure to visit the venue’s official website.

Da Los Angeles Daily News:

Fans celebrate the 30th anniversary of ‘The Little Mermaid’ with spectacular visuals and performances at the Hollywood Bowl
The live-to-film concert event featured performances by Lea Michele, Harvey Fierstein, Peter Gallagher and more on Friday night in Los Angeles.

Back in 2016, fans were elated to check out Disney’s “The Little Mermaid” presented on the big screen, filling up the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles over three evenings as a full orchestra, back-up singers and a few celebrity guests simultaneously sang and played along to the film as it was screened.

Three years later, the Hollywood Bowl presented an entirely new type of experience as with the help of technology they were able to take their “The Little Mermaid” live-to-film concert event and transform the venue into “an evening at the Hollywood Fish Bowl at the Dive-In Theater Under the Sea,” as concert director Richard Kraft described in a previous interview.

He wasn’t overselling it. Just before the film, which also screens on Saturday, May 18, began fans were greeted by the animated feature’s villain, Ursula, who took the audience from being at a drive-in to taking it to the depths of the ocean by using one of her sea witch spells. The vibe of the venue changed with the stunning, newly added visuals that were made possible courtesy of state-of-the-art projection, which was crisply cast upon the proscenium of the iconic Hollywood Bowl clamshell.

On top of the added visuals, the show did much more with its celebrity guest stars than before and incorporated not only the songs from Alan Menken’s Oscar- and Grammy Award-winning score for the film, but pieces from the Broadway version of the movie as well. “Glee” actress and Broadway regular Lea Michele was a perfect Ariel and she stunned the audience with her vocals and huge stage presence.

Bending gender roles with actor and playwright Harvey Fierstein as Ursula was a brilliant move; he was animated, he was dark and oh so creepy. Ken Page, who actually auditioned for the role of Sebastian the crab for the film, was able to take on the role 30 years later at the Hollywood Bowl and he nailed it.

Comedian and actor Cheech Marin had a lot of fun with his role as French Chef Louis. Rather than playing it straight, Marin kept his signature style and incorporated a bit of “I prefer East L.A.” into the seafood murdering chef’s memorable tune. Probably the biggest surprise for fans was how impressive Peter Gallagher was as King Triton.

Though he’s mostly known for his film and television roles, Gallagher spent a lot of his career doing Broadway plays and his chops are still razor sharp. In another smart casting move, L.A.-based pop singer Leo Gallo was brought in to be Prince Eric and it was evident by the audience reaction and applause that he won them over.

Overall the experience was much more elaborate than before, with added dancing and singing on stage, but they did cut the fireworks show. Instead, they brought out Menken at the close to play “Part of Your World” on piano with the original singing voice of Ariel, himself. It was a proper celebration of a film that has captured the hearts of audiences for three decades now. Guests were showing up in costumes from the movie and stood in line to take photos in a variety of elaborately themed booths located throughout the venue for before heading in to enjoy the movie.

FILM SCORES
Disney’s The Little Mermaid 30th Anniversary at The Hollywood Bowl
By Melissa Thompson | May 22, 2019

On Friday, May 18th, WAMG went under the sea for the 30th Anniversary “Live to Film Concert Experience” of Disney’s The Little Mermaid at the Hollywood Bowl.

There was no shortage of star power as some big names took the stage during the screening to sing all of the fan-favorite numbers. Lea Michele (as Ariel), Harvey Fierstein (as Ursula), Cheech Marin (as Chef Louis), Peter Gallagher (as King Triton), Leo Gallo (as Prince Eric), Ken Page (as Sebastian) and special guest Alan Menken, who performed the songs from the Oscar and Grammy-winning score as the film played on the Bowl’s movie screen accompanied by a full, live orchestra. Not gonna lie, we almost wept, when the beating-heart-of-Disney-musicals himself, Alan Menken walked out on stage and sat at the piano for a sweet rendition of “Part of Your World.”

The coolest part of the evening was the feeling of an underwater night out at the “dive-in,” in addition to the feature film, the show included a full program of aquatically-themed previews of coming attractions, nostalgic animated snack bar commercials, and the 1938 Silly Symphony cartoon “Merbabies” featuring the world premiere of a live original score composed and performed by 17 year-old piano sensation, Emily Bear. Fans were also invited to participate in a Little Mermaid themed costume contest and unique photo opportunities to get them in the spirit before the show.

Additionally, the award-winning creative studio Mousetrappe set up state-of-the-art projection mapping technology to project newly created and breathtaking animated “living scenery” onto the façade of the Hollywood Bowl, making the event an evolving extension of the beloved film and score.

It truly was a magical night under the sea (and stars!) and no one does that better then Disney.

Five Stars *****

Da BroadwayWorld:

The Houston Symphony Celebrates Pearl Anniversary Of THE LITTLE MERMAID
by BWW News Desk Aug. 21, 2019

The Houston Symphony closes out its 2019-2020 Bank of America Summer Sounds Series by celebrating the pearl (30 year) anniversary of The Little Mermaid, the animated masterpiece that launched the Disney Renaissance in 1989. The film comes to life on the big screen at Jones Hall this Labor Day weekend at 7:30 p.m. Aug. 31 and 2:30 p.m. Sept. 1.

This was the Disney Renaissance, a highpoint in Disney films that spanned a decade (1989-1999) and brought a Broadway style to classic fairy tales. The Little Mermaid, which premiered 30 years ago marking its pearl anniversary, features a score of much-loved songs, including "Kiss the Girl," "Part of Your World," and the Academy Award-winning "Under the Sea."

HOUSTON MATTERS
Houston Symphony Celebrates The Music Of The Little Mermaid
The orchestra will screen the Disney classic while performing the score live.

MICHAEL HAGERTY | POSTED ON AUGUST 30, 2019, 12:35 PM

Disney’s classic animated film The Little Mermaid was released in 1989.

When Disney released The Little Mermaid in 1989, it revived the studio’s legendary animated film wing.

Among the many things that made the film a new classic — whose popularity still endures today — is its score and many memorable songs, such as Under the Sea, and Part of Your World.

The Houston Symphony will pay homage to that music this weekend when it screens the film with an orchestra performing the score live.

In the audio above, Houston Matters producer Joshua Zinn and his mother, Jennifer Zinn De Waelsche, share a personal story about power of the film’s score. Then, he talks about the score with guest conductor Jason Seber.

The Little Mermaid Film with Live Orchestra:

Saturday, Aug. 31, at 7:30 p.m.
Sunday, Sept. 1, at 2:30 p.m.
