Hunger Games Prequel Movie to Start Filming in First Half of 2022

During a recent quarterly earnings call, Lionsgate chairman Joe Drake has revealed some new details about their upcoming film adaptation of Suzanne Collins’ Hunger Games prequel The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes. He confirmed that they’re planning to start production on the project in the first half of 2022, which will once again be directed by Francis Lawrence, who directed the last three installments of the franchise. Drake also revealed that the President Snow-centered prequel is currently on track for a late 2023 or early 2024 release, as its development has been “moving along really, really well” in pre-production.

He also went on to express his confidence in the film’s theatrical release. “There’s an audience that wants to come back to theaters,” Drake said (via Deadline). “I believe the market’s going to come back… There’s going to be a strong, robust platform for us to monetize our movies.”

First published last year, The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes is set 64 years before the events of the trilogy, starting on the morning of the reaping of the Tenth Hunger Games where an 18-year-old Coriolanus Snow is assigned as the mentor for the tribute girl from the impoverished District 12.

The novel’s official synopsis reads: “It is the morning of the reaping that will kick off the tenth annual Hunger Games. In the Capitol, eighteen-year-old Coriolanus Snow is preparing for his one shot at glory as a mentor in the Games. The once-mighty house of Snow has fallen on hard times, its fate hanging on the slender chance that Coriolanus will be able to outcharm, outwit, and outmaneuver his fellow students to mentor the winning tribute. The odds are against him. He’s been given the humiliating assignment of mentoring the female tribute from District 12, the lowest of the low. Their fates are now completely intertwined — every choice Coriolanus makes could lead to favor or failure, triumph or ruin. Inside the arena, it will be a fight to the death. Outside the arena, Coriolanus starts to feel for his doomed tribute… and must weigh his need to follow the rules against his desire to survive no matter what it takes.”

The film adaptation will be written by Oscar-winning-scribe Michael Arndt (Little Miss Sunshine), based on the treatment by best-selling author Suzanne Collins. Arndt is no stranger to the franchise as he previously served as one of the writers on 2013’s Catching Fire film.

The Hunger Games prequel will be produced by Nina Jacobson, who produced the original series of films through Color Force alongside partner Brad Simpson, with Collins attached as an executive producer.

The film franchise consisting of four movies (The Hunger Games, Catching Fire, Mockingjay-Part 1, Mockingjay-Part 2) has earned a combined worldwide gross of nearly $3 billion. It notably launched Oscar winner Jennifer Lawrence into international superstardom after the first film arrived in 2012 for her portrayal as Katniss Everdeen.

Golden Globe winner Rachel Zegler has officially been tapped for the leading role of Lucy Gray Baird in Lionsgate’s forthcoming The Hunger Games prequel The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes. The prequel is currently scheduled for a November 17, 2023, theatrical release.

Zegler will star opposite Tom Blyth (Billy the Kid), who was recently cast as the young Coriolanus Snow, the main antagonist of the original film series.

“When you read Suzanne’s book, Lucy Gray’s emotional intelligence, physical agility, and fiercely powerful, determined singing voice shine through,” President of Lionsgate Motion Picture Group, Nathan Kahane said in a statement. “Rachel embodies all of those skills – she is the perfect choice for our Lucy Gray.”

“Like everybody, I first saw Rachel Zegler in West Side Story, and like everybody, I knew I was watching a star who would command the screen for a generation,” said director Francis Lawrence. “Lucy Gray is a perfect match for her as an actress: the character is bold, independent, and defiant, but also vulnerable, emotional, and loving. Rachel will make this character unforgettable.”

Written by Michael Lesslie based on a draft by Collins and Michael Arndt, the film will be helmed by Hunger Games films director Francis Lawrence. It will be shepherded by franchise producer Nina Jacobson and her producing partner Brad Simpson, along with Francis Lawrence. Suzanne Collins, Tim Palen, and Jim Miller will serve as executive producers. Meredith Wieck and Scott O’Brien are overseeing on behalf of the studio.

Following her breakout role and acting debut in Steven Spielberg’s The West Side Story, Zegler’s star is continuing to rise, as she has currently lined up a number of high-profile projects including Shazam! Fury of the Gods, the live-action adaptation of Snow White, and Apple’s animated fantasy film Spellbound.

EXCLUSIVE: For the upcoming Hunger Games prequel, the odds are in its favor to add an Emmy-winning star to the cast. Sources tell Deadline that Peter Dinklage is set to join the growing ensemble of Lionsgate’s Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes.

Dinklage will play Casca Highbottom, dean of the Academy. He will star in the film opposite Tom Blyth, who will play the young Coriolanus Snow, and Rachel Zegler, as tribute Lucy Gray Baird. Francis Lawrence, who directed the franchise’s Catching Fire, Mockingjay Part One, and Mockingjay Part Two, will direct the adaptation of the Suzanne Collins novel.

“Dean Highbottom is one of the most powerful people in Snow’s life,” Lawrence said. “As the austere and vindictive face of the games, he sets the rules that will determine every aspect of Coriolanus’ fate. I’m thrilled that Peter will be bringing him to life.”

The studio recently announced that moviegoers will return to The Hunger Games, the landmark 2010s film franchise that has earned more than $3 billion globally, as The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes debuts in theaters worldwide on November 17, 2023.

“I cannot think of an actor more perfectly suited to inhabit the role of Highbottom,” Jacobson said. “As the man credited with conceiving the Hunger Games and the Dean of the Academy, Casca Highbottom is a character with secrets. Peter’s magnetism, intensity and dark humor will infuse him with the intelligence, depth and pathos that the role demands.”

The latest draft of the screenplay is by Michael Lesslie. Lesslie builds on the work of writers Suzanne Collins and Michael Arndt, who penned a previous draft. Meredith Wieck and Scott O’Brien are overseeing on behalf of the studio.

Dinklage, who is best known for his acclaimed and Emmy-winning work as Tyrion Lannister on HBO’s global hit series Game of Thrones, has been very busy since GoT ended its run in 2018. He most recently starred as Cyrano for director Joe Wright. His upcoming work includes Brothers opposite Josh Brolin and Brendan Fraser and She Came to Me opposite Anne Hathaway and Marisa Tomei for writer-director Rebecca Miller. He is represented by CAA and Jackoway Austen Tyerman.

Si tratta di Viola Davis, che interpreterà la dottoressa Volumnia Gaul, capo stratega della 10° edizione degli Hunger Games.

Our first official look at Tom Blyth and Rachel Zegler as Coriolanus Snow and Lucy Gray Baird in the Hunger Games prequel movie has arrived.

“This is very much a story about love,” says Francis Lawrence. The sentiment may be surprising, coming from the director of The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes—but there’s far more to this prequel than the Games you’re expecting. “It’s this kind of love story set in a different kind of a world in a different time,” he adds. “A very intimate love story.” He isn’t wrong.

Set roughly 64 years before the saga told in the original Hunger Games quadrilogy, the new film—based on Hunger Games author Suzanne Collins’s 2020 novel—follows Coriolanus Snow (Tom Blyth) decades before he becomes the most powerful man in the dystopian land of Panem. Still, the future president Snow, played in the Hunger Games films by Donald Sutherland, is no less ambitious as a high school student. “He is a young man finding his way in the world, but he also makes choices that presage the man he is becoming,” producer Nina Jacobson says. Over the course of the film, he’ll find himself caught between two forces of nature: the charming Lucy Gray Baird (Rachel Zegler) and the villainous Dr. Volumnia Gaul (Viola Davis). “He is a shape-shifter who craves control, but is drawn to a woman who threatens everything he thought he wanted.”

That woman, Lucy Gray, adds a soft touch to the franchise’s brutal world. Much like Hunger Games heroine Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence in the original films), she’s a tribute from District 12. Unlike Katniss, Lucy Gray hails from a group known for their close-knit, musical culture. (“It’s thrilling to hear Rachel sing,” Jacobson says.) Her relationship with Snow starts in the arena—though it quickly grows beyond what the cameras see. As shown in this exclusive first image from the film, above, she calms Snow in a way that little else in his war-torn world can.

“This is not with judgment, but Lucy Gray is the anti-Katniss,” adds Lawrence. “She’s a musician, she’s a performer, she’s a charmer…. Snow has never met a girl like this before.”

Because this film is set decades before Katniss was born, it delves deeper into the mythology of Panem that the original films, and novels, were built upon. Snow and his contemporaries are still reckoning with the consequences of “the dark days,” the wars that led to the Hunger Games.

“It’s completely different stylistically, in terms of design, character, and point of view,” says Jacobson. “To be able to show a different side of Panem at a different time in its history has been really exciting.” Lawrence teases that production designer Uli Hanisch (The Queen’s Gambit) has been working to create a “new version” of the dystopian nation, and that many aspects of it—from the architecture to interior design—reflect the broken nature of this story’s world and characters. “We also get to remake District 12, remake all of the Capitol,” he adds, “and a brand-new arena.”

Of course, The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes will still have callbacks aplenty. “Suzanne has done such a great job of going back into the mythology and telling a story about the creation of the world,” says Lawrence. “You get a little background of Katniss. You will obviously get a lot of the background of Snow, the history of the Games, the history of some of the music, where songs like ‘The Hanging Tree’ actually come from.”

“Returning to the world of The Hunger Games has been a coming home,” Jacobson adds—as well as a journey toward a greater understanding of the series’ chief villain. “As much as we may hate [Snow] in the later movies,” says Lawrence, “to see that he is a real human being…there is something really satisfying about that.”

Ecco il * TRAILER * sicuramente epico e inquietante. La Zegler se la gioca un'altra volta. Chissà se sarà finalmente quella del sospirato ed inseguito successo.

Non ho mai seguito la saga quindi non ao come giudicare questo prequel.
Rachel è sempre bella, questo è il suo terzo film importante, però è reduce da due insuccessi al botteghino, quindi speriamo questo vada meglio… o rischia di farsi una brutta nomea se tutti i suoi film sono flop, e non credo che con Biancaneve faranno grandissimi numeri

Speriamo che almeno Hunger Games abbia successo... già abbiamo visto la fine di Naomi Scott (una delle nostre preferite) che seppure abbia avuto mega successo con Aladdin alla fine è sparita perchè non è stata per niente pubblicizzata...
purtroppo Biancaneve non potrà fare grandi numeri perchè sin da subito si è evitato qualsiasi pubblicità sul film e sul cast... avrà anche la Gadot tra le protagoniste ma non è certo un film di cui se ne è parlato durante la realizzazione (mentre pensiamo che se avessero messo la Gadot in un'altra pellicola se ne sarebbe parlato praticamente ogni giorno)... hanno avuto decisamente maggior pubblicità e risalto Lilo e Stitch o Pinocchio o Peter Pan & Wendy che sono destinati a Disney+ rispetto a Biancaneve... ma generalmente tutti i film hanno avuto maggior pubblicità rispetto a quella che hanno fatto finora a Biancaneve (e parliamo durante la realizzazione non nella promozione)... ricordiamoci che di tutti i film almeno gli annunci sono stati dai dieci ai dodici (di qualcuno pure uno ogni settimana) mentre di Biancaneve ve ne sono stati solo tre (Zegler, Gadot, Burnap) quindi già lì vedete che non vi è la benchè minima intenzione di pubblicizzare il film... se avessero voluto pubblicizzare il film, state tranquilli che ben avrebbero potuto lanciare notizie almeno una volta al mese (non diciamo ogni settimana, ma almeno una volta al mese)... poi il teaser del D23 neppure è trapelato online (ricordiamoci che i leak sono comunque volutamente fatti uscire dalla company altrimenti sai i danni che chiederebbe)... inoltre abbiamo letto che c'è gente che manco sa che il live action di Biancaneve è di prossima uscita (mentre il popolino generalmente un'idea generale se la fa o comunque qualcosa conosce)... tutto questo riserbo sul film non si è mai compreso a dire il vero, è proprio esagerato

con questo vogliamo dire che speriamo davvero che non rovinino la carriera della Zegler come hanno fatto con quella di Naomi Scott...

Recensioni intorno al 60 per cento su RT e solo 40-45 milioni di dollari nel weekend d'apertura. Un altro flop per l'antipaticissima Zegler che con l'imminente disastro di Biancaneve rischia davvero una pietra tombale sulla sua carriera da miracolata.

siamo onesti, se la Zegler fosse stata sostenuta almeno la decima parte di quanto sono state sostenute e pompate la Bailey, la Watson, la James, la Stewart e la Jolie o la Johannsson probabilmente anche lei avrebbe numeroni da capogiro al box office, invece tutto quello che la riguarda è solo stroncarla come se niente fosse...
e non importa che sia una delle attrici più belle (e soprattutto più brave) di oggi, niente, la devono massacrare a prescindere...
pazienza, si rifarà altrove magari a Broadway dove c'è meno chiusura verso gli attori bravi...
peccato che tutte le giovani attrici che ci piacciono vengono etichettate box office poison (la Zegler, la Scott)... speriamo che almeno l'attrice che sceglieranno per Megara sia una superstar già nota oggi, così almeno evitano di etichettarla, magari la pompano tantissimo e possiamo rivederla in altre pellicole

Veu però ci vuole un po’ di onestà intellettuale. Chi di spada ferisce, di spada perisce. Le attrici che l’hanno preceduta non hanno aperto la bocca a vanvera come ha fatto la Zegler e questo al netto della sceneggiatura Disney che tutte devono imparare. L’ha fatta fuori dal vaso ed è molto improbabile che certe dichiarazioni le siano state imbeccate.
Farebbe bene a riscoprire un po’ di umiltà e a farsi conoscere come una valida e credibile Biancaneve una volta tanto.

Alessio, tra tutte ricordiamo che solo la Fanning non ha criticato il personaggio animato, tutte le altre lo hanno fatto parlando spesso e sovente a vanvera
poi che sia iniziata la campagna anti-Zegler è un dato di fatto, e la circostanza che non sia sostenuta è altrettanto vero... fosse stata un'altra attrice vedreste come sarebbero intervenuti tutti a sostenerla fino in fondo... questo perchè comunque la disney spende meno per Biancaneve rispetto agli altri film

comunque nelle ultime interviste in occasione proprio di Hunger Games, la Zegler ha fatto chiaramente capire che tiene a Biancaneve sia come personaggio animato sia come il suo film, ovviamente il web non le ha neppure riportate perché è più facile sparare sulla croce rossa che non dire le cose come stanno... domani comunque ne mettiamo qualcuna nel topic di Biancaneve

Veu il problema della Zegler è che non risulta simpatica nelle sue interviste, a prescindere dal ruolo di Biancaneve e che la sua ascesa è stata TROPPO improvvisa e forzata.
Se guardiamo Keira Knightley, già prima di Pirati dei Caraibi aveva riscosso successo con pellicole low budget quali "Sognando Beckham" e " Love Actually", vantando una carriera cinematografica sin da bambina; Scarlett Johansson prima di essere la Vedova Nera degli avengers era in "l'uomo che sussurrava ai cavalli" e "Ghost World", poi ha avuto ruoli di spicco in film indipendenti come "lost in translation" e "la ragazza con l'orecchino di perla" e film d'autore come "Match Point" e "the Prestige".
La Zegler DAL NULLA è stata inserita in un film ad altissimo budget dietro l'altro: primo film nella sua carriera in "West Side Story" poi subito "Shazam" e "Hunger Games", oltre a "Biancaneve"... un'ascesa troppo rapida. Nessuno nega che sia una ragazza carina (ma nulla a che vedere con la bellezza raffinata e sofisticata di una Knightley o della Portman, né con la sensualità della Johansson) e di talento, ma come ce ne sono a centinaia. Il pubblico la respinge perché oltre a essere poco simpatica, da troppo l'idea della miracolata raccomandata.
Che poi è un po' anche il problema della Bailey, che ha anche l'aggravante di essere decisamente bruttina, ma almeno lei è stata imposta in un solo film ad alto budget (due se consideriamo "il colore viola" di prossima uscita)... con la Zegler hanno davvero esagerato e ora è bruciata.

Per dire, Anya Taylor Joy ha iniziato dal basso (film indipendenti come the VVitch) e è arrivata solo dopo tanti anni ad essere inserita nei film iper commerciali, e comunque non ai livelli della Zegler...
