Da BillBoard:

Disney's 'The Little Mermaid' Comes To The Hollywood Bowl Starring Sara Bareilles And Rebel Wilson: Exclusive

Ariel will make her Hollywood Bowl debut June 4 when Sara Bareilles and Rebel Wilson headline a cast performing the songs from Disney’s The Little Mermaid as the film plays backed by a 71-piece live orchestra. Bareilles will play Ariel, the titular mermaid, while Wilson has signed on as Ursula, the sea witch. The cast also includes John Stamos as Chef Louis, Tituss Burgess as Sebastian and Darren Criss as Prince Eric.

The idea for the Hollywood Bowl recreation came about as The Little Mermaid’s co-composer, eight-time Oscar winner Alan Menken, and his representative, Kraft-Engel Management co-owner Richard Kraft, were discussing possible touring plans. “Richard said, ‘how would you feel about a live performance of The Little Mermaid with the film, orchestra and guest performers?’ I said, ‘you’ve got to be kidding. That would be unreal!,’” recalls Menken. Menken, who co-wrote the music for the 1989 film with his late partner Howard Ashman, says this will mark the first time his score has been performed in its entirety by a live orchestra since he recorded it at Todd-AO Recording Stage more than 25 years ago. “That was my very first full score for a film,” he tells Billboard. “I was nervous and I learned an immense amount both in the writing and in the recording of the score.”

Among Menken’s beloved songs from the movie are “Under the Sea,” “Kiss The Girl,” “Poor Unfortunate Souls” and “Part of Your World,” which Bareilles recently went into an impromptu performance of on March 30 to entertain the audience when part of the set quit working in her new Broadway play Waitress. “I’ve been pretending I was Ariel in swimming pools since I was a little girl, and now I get to pretend on a bigger stage. This is just fantastic,” said Bareilles in a statement. Wilson labels herself a Menken “fan-girl,” in a statement, adding Ursula is “just such a delicious role that I’ve always wanted to play.”

The Hollywood Bowl performance will also include additional songs Menken co-wrote for the Broadway version of The Little Mermaid, including his favorite, “Her Voice,” sung by Prince Eric. “I’m so excited about that,” he says. “Seeing the material from the movie wedded to the Broadway show will be incredible.” Michael Kosarin, who has worked with Menken since 1994, will lead the orchestra and a 12-person choir.

Menken, 66, says there has been talk about touring The Little Mermaid film backed by live orchestras in front of audiences, but there are “no concrete plans yet,” he says. “For a lot of us, it’s wait and see how the Hollywood Bowl goes.” For the composer, the ongoing love for The Little Mermaid and the vaunted position it holds in the pantheon of great Disney animated films is a continuing thrill for him. “I still feel like the off-off-Broadway struggling composer who first wrote Little Shop of Horrors, but one day you wake up and you’ve turned into something bigger,” he says. “It is a bit of an out of body experience when you know that people have grown up investing so much in something you wrote.”

Menken will open the Hollywood Bowl show with a medley of his best-known songs from Beauty And The Beast, Aladdin, Pocahontas, Newsies, Enchanted, and Tangled. “Then I’m going to sit back and enjoy the show like everyone else,” he says.

Tickets go on sale April 9 at 10 a.m Pacific Time via ticketmaster.com.

Articolo in italiano da La Gazzetta Disney:

La Sirenetta Live arriva all’Hollywood Bowl!

Jodi Benson reprises Ariel in The Little Mermaid concert on June 6

Grab onto your fins, because the original Ariel is returning to the role that made her famous. A third performance of the celebrity-studded concert presentation of The Little Mermaid has been added for June 6, 2016, at the Hollywood Bowl, and Jodi Benson herself will be reprising the role of Ariel.
Jodi Benson will be joined by Rebel Wilson as Ursula, John Stamos as Chef Louis, Tituss Burgess as Sebastian, Norm Lewis as King Triton, Darren Criss as Eric, and Joshua Colley as Flounder. Benson and the rest of the cast will be singing the songs from the score of The Little Mermaid with a live orchestra, as the movie plays in the background on the huge Hollywood Bowl screen. For the June 6 performance only, the Opening Guest Stars will include Susan Egan, who was the voice of Meg in Hercules and the original Belle in Beauty and the Beast on Broadway, and Brad Kane, who was the singing voice of Aladdin in Aladdin. Mic drop.
Jodi Benson was quoted as saying:
“I’m so thrilled and incredibly blessed to be invited once again to sing at the Hollywood Bowl—and this time as my beloved Ariel during this unique commemoration of our movie, The Little Mermaid,” said Benson. “It’s such a special honor to celebrate my 30th anniversary with the Walt Disney Company by standing on the Hollywood Bowl stage and singing the beautiful music of the brilliant Howard Ashman and Alan Menken. I am truly honored and eternally grateful to Howard and Alan and our directors, Ron Clements and John Musker, for allowing me to bring Ariel to life and to be ‘part of your world’ for all of these many, amazing years.”
Tickets are still available for The Little Mermaid concerts on June 3rd and 4th, which will be headlined by Sarah Bareilles as Ariel. When the concerts were originally announced, composer Alan Menken said:
“It is such an unbelievable abundance of riches to have my score for The Little Mermaid performed by a live orchestra, with incredible guest artists at the Hollywood Bowl…From the animated film to our Broadway production to events like this one, it is just incredible to realize the emotional investment people continue to have with this musical.”
Tickets for Jodi Benson’s June 6 performance go on sale Wednesday April 27 at 10 a.m. at ticketmaster.com.

Da BillBoard:

Disney's 'Little Mermaid in Concert' Caps Hollywood Bowl Run With Original Ariel, Jodi Benson

After the first two show-stopping nights of Disney’s The Little Mermaid in Concert at the Hollywood Bowl -- featuring Sara Bareilles, Rebel Wilson and Darren Criss -- the production upped the ante for its third and final performance on June 6.

Jodi Benson, the original voice of Ariel, headlined the third show, and was welcomed to the stage with thunderous applause from an audience filled with Disney devotees. (Bareilles starred as Ariel in the first two shows, but was not on hand for the third. Benson was a surprise guest at the first two shows.) Benson and the celebrity guest cast performed the film’s familiar songs as the movie unspooled on the big screens in the Bowl, accompanied by a 71-piece orchestra. In addition to beloved numbers from the movie like “Part of Your World,” “Kiss the Girl” and the Academy Award-winning “Under the Sea,” the show was augmented with songs from its Tony Award-nominated stage musical adaptation.

Watching Benson singing “Part of Your World” was especially poignant for Criss (who played Ariel’s beau, Prince Eric, at the Bowl), as it was the very first cover song he uploaded to YouTube back in 2007. That was years before he got his big break on Fox TV’s Glee in 2010, and even before he went viral with A Very Potter Musical in 2009.

Criss tells Billboard, “That video unexpectedly set me on a wild course that I never could have dreamed would eventually bring me to the side of the stage at the Hollywood Bowl, listening to the original voice of Ariel herself, Disney Legend Jodi Benson, performing that same song live before my very damp eyes. … [It was] a real-life, Disney dreams-come-true experience.”

Before the main event started, the crowd was treated to a mini-concert featuring some very special guests: Brad Kane and Susan Egan. Kane, the original voice of Aladdin (from the film of the same name) turned up in the pre-show to warm up -- and wow -- the crowd with Aladdin’s “One Jump Ahead” (complete with a somersault at the end of the song) and “Proud of Your Boy” (a song cut from the film). Egan (who played Hercules’ Meg and originated the role of Belle in Beauty and the Beast on Broadway) stopped by to perform “I Won’t Say (I’m In Love)” from Hercules, accompanied by her Muses, and “Belle” from Beauty and the Beast.

Lastly, the two performers joined together (and wondered out loud if Aladdin and Belle would have perhaps fallen for one another in a different time and place), and then duetted on Aladdin’s Billboard Hot 100 No. 1 hit “A Whole New World.”
