Uploaded with ImageShack.us Glow in the Park 06.03.10 - World of Color lights up Disney California Adventure with sparkling fountains of fantasy, fear, laughter and imagination. We watched them illuminate the dark night sky with majestic wish-upon-a-star fireworks. And on the Rivers of America, they've invited us to become part of their world with the pageantry of princesses and pirates in Mickey's imagination. They've even pulled us off the curbs of Main Street, U.S.A. and on to our feet — even though we felt a little embarrassed at first — to jump, jive and wail with some of our favorite characters. But nothing compares to the whole new colorful world that the Parades and Spectaculars team from Walt Disney Imagineering (WDI) is about to take us to next. High and low over Paradise Bay, a thrilling panorama and spectrum of nighttime effects will mesmerize audiences when the dazzling World of Color debuts on June 11 at Disney California Adventure. World of Color fills Paradise Bay to the brim with music and stories from Disney's and Pixar's canon of films. Remember the way WALL·E and Eve peacefully danced against the beautiful star-filled backdrop of space? Or how Ariel discovered everything under — and above — the sea in The Little Mermaid? Now, you'll see these moments beautifully unfold on a 380-feet-wide glittering water screen. "I think it really speaks to the child in us," says Steve Davison, vice president, Creative Entertainment, WDI. "And that's kind of what I always try to do when I work on a show. Touch the kid at heart." Through some of Parks and Resorts' most acclaimed shows, everywhere from Tokyo to Paris, Steve and his team have told Disney's best-loved stories. Footage from the original Walt Disney's Wonderful World of Color television series gives the new show a nostalgic start. "It lets you find a happy place again," Steve says. It's not all fantasy and frolic, though. The 25-minute, twice-nightly spectacle also dives into some of the darker moments that define Disney films. "It gets pretty scary," Steve admits. Depicted on enormous fountains — taller than Mickey's Fun Wheel! — The Lion King's stampede scene and The Princess and the Frog's "Friends on the Other Side" send chilling waves of fear through the audience. At one point the entire bay is engulfed in flames, another one of the water pageant's impressive effects. "You let people's minds control how the show is viewed — from shooting water to dramatic things that come after you," he points out. "At times it's pure dance and at others it's pure drama." Behind the scenes, it's more of a science experiment than a theme park attraction. The show gushes with nearly 1,200 fountains creating more than 18,000 points of control. "It's been about discovery," says Sayre Wiseman, director of show production, Creative Entertainment, WDI. "There's so much that we are learning and that we continue to learn." The team behind World of Color has been focused on developing these kaleidoscopic scenes for five years, but didn't know exactly how it would all come together until they began testing in February. "It wasn't until we were out here and started programming the show that we were able to find out what all this technology could do," she adds. Once they were finally able to see their concepts come to life in the bay, a new challenge arrived — the weather. "On a humid night, our foggers reacted differently," Sayre explains. The weather doubled the amount of fog produced by the foggers, creating a cloudy dreamlike wonderland throughout Paradise Pier. "We could get this place to look like San Francisco if we wanted to," she adds. "You wouldn't be able to see your hand in front of you!". Like the legendary firework spectaculars at Disneyland, it's the story — not the technology — that people return again and again to see. "When we create massive technology to support a show, what we always try to do is make it look simple," Steve says. "I call it ice-skating. You create something and it should look as flawless as an Olympic skater. You shouldn't see how it all happens. You should just see how it is all portrayed and brought to life. Yes, we've created the world's first full-color fountain, but, for audiences, I hope that it's just sort of this beautiful thing that unfolds." And what would a Disney park spectacular be without a few pixie-dusted surprises thrown in? Just look to the flowerbeds surrounding the new landscaped viewing area. There, hidden fountains immerse the audience even deeper into the story as they spring to life during some of the splashiest scenes. There's also a gigantic 80-foot fiery Chernabog — the yellow-eyed winged villain from Fantasia — that rises from the fogged-over lagoon and heats up the entire bay. And since the whole show is changeable, whatever they haven't thought of yet they can add to future versions of World of Color with just a little programming. With a world-renowned creative entertainment team, a whole vault of Disney films as fodder and the latest in special-effects technology, the possibilities for World of Color are endless. "It's just a very sumptuous, fun, candy-like world," Steve says with a smile. "And when it ends, I hope everyone goes, 'Wow!'".
